Re: [Audyssey] Retro Remakes was game speech

2012-01-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, I know. I've played around with a number of the retro remakes
myself and I am aware not all of them strictly use original sounds.
Although, that really wasn't my point.

What I wanted to point out is that many of these retro remakes are
designed from a purely sighted point of view with a lot of the
emphasis on the graphics, but the developers pay very little attention
to the audio environment. As you said yourself a lot of the retro
remakes would have to be completely redesigned from scratch to make
them accessible. The game might have to be slowed down a little bit,
certain traps would need to be altered to be understood purely through
an audio medium, and the sounds themselves would have to be selected
for their realism. However, my point is I don't think we can just take
the game as is and bolt accessibility onto it. Accessibility would
have to be designed into the game from the beginning and have the
graphics and animations added to the game once the accessibility was
in place.

Take good old Montezuma's Revenge for example. The precious jewels
were hanging in the air, and the only way to get them is to jump up
and catch them out of the air. James North and I used a sound for the
jewels, and a little chime sound when you caught one. The retro remake
by Digital Art in 2006 was very good, the sounds and graphics were
excellent, but there was no way to find the precious jewels, keys,
gold coins, and other treasures in the pyramid. What I would have
liked to have done is join up with Digital Art and get their 3d
graphics and add it to my own version since the audio environment was
designed for a blind gamer in mind.

On 1/29/12, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:
 Hi Tom.

firstly, not all retroremakes have the original sounds and music. one of my
favourites for instance, a game called millenipeed which is obviously a
remake of the game centipeed, has modern soundes and music, and it's own
 graphics.

the graphics are simple as compared to modern console games, but certainly
far more than what've been possible when centipeed was originally released.
It all depends upon how much the individual developer redesignged the game.

speaking of redesign, I personally don't think it'd be a case of modifying
an existing remake to make it audio accessible, both for strictly
programming reasons, and because also the game might need a little rejigging
in speed, enemy position etc in order to make a good audio game.

For example, in the game ice climbers, you are vertically assending a
mountain. You can knock holes in ledges above you by jumping up to hit them,
but also have to cope with things like moving ledges.

Frequently, you'll have to jump onto one horizontal platform, jump onto
another, and then! have to hit blocks above you. This is further complicated
by the flying topies (birds), that fly horizontally across. So, in order to
calculate your jump you need to considder not just your position, but that
of two ledges above you, where the blocks are you can bash out of the way,
and whether any toppies are flying around.

this is a case where perhaps taking in that much information in audio just
would not work as is, so a developer might have to substitute some other
challenge, for example having only one moving ledge to jump onto above
you, but having some spikes at either side that could kill you if you jumped
onto the moving ledge when it was too close to them. Thus, you'd stil need
to use your judgement of moving ledge position and your knolidge of game
mechanics, but not in a way that would require an overload of audio
 information.

This is why I think if one or other of the retroremakes devs were to work on
an audio game, it would have to be a case of doing something from scratch,
picking the right game and designing the audio elements to work along with
the rest of the game and graphics.

Afterall, something like prince of persia would require not too much in the
way of alterations to gameplay, just audio kews for pit length, guard
attacks etc, ditto with some of the arena based shooters, or games like
packman (indeed I personally find packman more fun as an audio game than
 visually).

 Beware the Grue!

 Dark.

Hi Tom.

that is true, indeed there are many even of the retroremakes which are just
as unplayable for me as modern 3D console games due to overly complex 3D
graphics or inaccessible menues, so it's certainly true that just because
it's retro doesn't mean emphasis has changed.

That being said, i do think there would be far more chance of having
something audio accessible designed by an indi dev from somewhere like
retroremakes. As I said, there have already been some steps forward in this
direction with games like smugglers, where as of course the mainstream
companies, motivated as they are by prophit above all else stil will not
give a hoot.

For what programming language are we talking about? If we are talking
about C++ Visual C++ 2008 will do that. If we are talking C# Visual C#
2008 will do that. If Visual Basic visual Basic 2008 will also do
that. If you are talking about BGT I don't know of any editors that
will do autocomplete etc.
Hello Thomas. I was talking about a general editor that can complete automatically every words has been already writen within the
current document, as Notepad++ is supposed to do. In this case I was referring specifically to BGT.

If Notepad++ would be more accessible, it could be perfect to write code, do you know if there is some scripts for it working with

Thanks.

You will need to talk to the antique shop owner twice.
To do the task again and then get something from her.

After a while, to and out of the shop maybe, you will see something

Then with that, you can open up something of what you will need to kill

Re: [Audyssey] SmartEditor. Was: Re: Writing code.

2012-01-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Actually, you can simulate this behavior with BGT. BGT scripts do not
actually have to be compiled to run. You can keep the source open in
Notepad, and run the script in BGT looking for errors at the same
time. If you get an error message you can use the goto command to jump
to the line where the error is, fix it, and rerun the script. Its
similar to what you already do in Visual Basic 6 and Visual Basic .NET
as far as running the program in the debugger.

On 1/30/12, Jim Kitchen j...@kitchensinc.net wrote:
 Hi Gabriel,

Not to start an argument, and I know that BGT is far better for creating
games, especially for a new programmer, but one reason that I still very
much like to create my games in VB6 is because I write and test run the code
right in the VB6 IDE. And if there are any errors, it tells me what the
error is and puts me on the line of code where the error is. I don't think
that I could ever get used to programming code in a text editor and then
trying to compile it. I just have always coded in a Basic IDE.

Re: [Audyssey] Chillingham, I know I'm a pain

2012-01-30 Thread dark

Hi Kieth.

Spoilage ahoy!

You need to firstly go to lilly's house and check everything including the
chest and the desk the gun should be there. Then go to the antique shop,
there will be a knew item, and the antique dealer may give you another task,
look at the new item then go back to lilly's, then if the antique dealer
didn't give you another job to do, go and talk to her again. That should get
you the gun and the bullits.

Then, go look at the tree, and get the branche, you should then be able to
get beyond the swamp.

For the bottle, you don't need to actually take the cork out, just use it
with the right thing.

Hint. Don't give the perfume to the lady at the antique shop. It has a

With a little of lua script, it would be possible to do that with my own
text editor as well. There is no autocompletion in the base version, but
it is perfectly possible to make a script for that.

My editor is called 6pad, and is fully accessible.
Direct download at http://quentinc.net/6pad/?dl=en121
zip file ~300KB

I primarily made it because editors like notepad++, notepad2, etc. are
not 100% accessibles with jaws at the time I started it, and because
notepad is too limited in functions.

Quick list of features:
* Encoding and line ending support
* Search/replace with regular expressions
* Open multiple files in different tabs
* double cursor, smart home, indentation type, double open and
concurrent modification protection

* powerful lua scripting with a quite complete API
* small and portable (less than 500KB)

[Audyssey] 6Pad and autocomplete. Was: Re: SmartEditor. Was: Re: Writing code.

2012-01-30 Thread Il primo cittadino
Hi QuentinC, that's really nice to read... You said it's possible and my question comes consequentially: do you have time and effort
to realize it?

I guess you perfectly know what I intend as an autocomplete feature. Just to be clear I would like to have an editor that scan all
the opened documents and peek up every word on them in order to use these words as suggestions on what I'm typing. Moreover, among
these words, 6Pad should suggest also all the keywords from the specific language choosen within an appropriate menu, in this case
I'm interested in BGT.
To accept the first suggestion, we may press the TabKey, to scroll throw different suggestions beginning with what we have alread
typed in, we should press the vertical harrow keys, then Tab.

What do you think about?

I think If you realize this piece of software, your 6Pad could be considered a
bit jewel in its sky!
Gabriel.

I don't know. I should probably try for ersion 1.3. It would be a lua
extension, not included in the base version.
Note, the lua API for events is going to be redone completely in version
1.3, because current event API is not very consist. Don't start coding
something now, wait for v1.3 first. Coming in a couple of days.

really mouse friendly, so not really friendly for people with ni sight at all.
I know you can change the keys in the config file, but still feel that there
should be a totally blind-friendly version made availible. I'm not sure how to
go about trying to make the game work for me as far as changing keys goes.

hi,
swamp was intended to be mouse controled to make it feel more mainstream.
however even though it takes a while to get used to, its easy enough
to get used to mouse control as the mouse cannot move outside the
window of the game.
also in an fps like this, learning to use a mouse completely defeats
keyboard control, as its much easier to have prosice movements among
other things.
if you need to config keys diferently such as the reload button etc,
the config file makes it easy to understand anyway.
my advice is just keep at it, you'll get it eventually.

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp question

2012-01-30 Thread Che

  Hi Lori,
It is the same concept as using a keyboard totally blind, you just
get used to where the items you need are located.
It takes some practice, but my wife just started playing swamp, she
is totally blind, and never used a mouse before either, but she is doing
quite well and really enjoying the game.
Keep in mind, hundreds of totally blind folks are playing swamp now
with a mouse, and hundreds others have played other audio games with
mouse support, with more on the way.
The mouse is a great method of input for the blind, folks just need
to be open minded and give it a fair shot.
I sent some tips to the list a while back on using the mouse for the
first time, perhaps someone could dig that post up and re post?

  Later

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp question

2012-01-30 Thread Christopher Bartlett
Here's the thing Lori. You only need sight to use a mouse if you're
tracking the mouse pointer. When you move the mouse in Swamp, the audio
environment changes in a predictable way; move the mouse left, turn left,
move the mouse right, turn right. You don't really even to know left from
right, just be able to navigate using audio cues just as you would with a
cane or dog, with moving the mouse being equivalent to turning your body.

Once you've practiced, and put together a keyboard layout that uses the hand
you're not moving the mouse with, you will be able to react quickly and
smoothly in a way you simply could not with a keyboard.

As others have posted here, please try it before judging whether or not it's
accessible.

get used to where the items you need are located.

Hi Lori,

Swamp is fully accessible regardless if you are totally blind or not.
Yes, it requires that you use a mouse, but that doesn't mean the game
isn't accessible. The mouse is a programmable device just like a
keyboard, joystick, etc. I respectfully suggest that you try the game
a little bit, and if you need help with the game there are plenty of
guys and gals here that can give you pointers of working with a mouse.
There are a number of accessible games that use a mouse, and you might
want to learn how to use a mouse because it is faster and smoother
than a keyboard in a lot of cases. I know there is a lot of
misconceptions out here that mice aren't blind user friendly, but
that's simply not true.

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp question

2012-01-30 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,

Well, let me explain this so you can understand where we are coming
from. The way the mouse works in standard Windows applications and the
way it works in games is completely different.

In standard Windows applications you need some sight to use the mouse
because the mouse is used to move a cursor around the screen to click
on buttons, menus, icons, etc. This is generally what most people
think of when you mention using a mouse. However, this doesn't apply
to games, because they use a totally different interface.

In games a mouse is no different from any other input device like a
keyboard or joystick. there is no cursor to move around and point and
click on things. Instead the game developer maps commands like walk
forward to mouse forward, walk back to mouse backward, turn left to
mouse left, turn right to mouse right, etc. This does not require any
sight at all, because when you move the mouse the audio environment is
updated to match the movement of the mouse. Make sense?

For instance, let's use Troopenum as an example. Let's say you could
use a mouse in that game. If you pulled the mouse left you would move
left in the game world, and when you pull the mouse right you would
move right in the game world. Pressing left click would fire your
laser. Essentially, the mouse would react like a joystick and not a
mouse. Therefore you don't really need sight to play the game because
the same commands that the developer could map to a keyboard or
joystick can be mapped to the mouse too.

Cheers!

jump out at you in that match? it's this sort of thing you need to be aware

actually during the match, in those split seconds of reaction time. and it's
this deep level of gameplay that no audio game has offered. accept maybe

2012-01-30 Thread QuentinC
Is the LUA extension something not available for free? Or do I have
to programming only in LUA to use it?

Could you explain to me a bit further, thanks in advance.

Not at all. You can really edit what you want in my editor, it's a
general purpose editor.

In fact, you can extend the features of my editor by writing scripts.
Those scripts can add items in the menus, intercept certain key
shortcuts to perform custom actions, modify files as they are opened or
saved to do auto-formatting or auto-compiling on the fly, etc. I provide
a rich set of functions to make the thing highly customizable. If you
wish, you could probably turn 6pad quasi into a full featured IDE.

I have chosen lua as language for these scripts because lua is powerful,
easy to learn, easy to embed, small, free, open source, and there are
already many 3rd libraries for it. For your information, 6pad itself is
also open source, the wonderful crappy source code can be downloaded
from the 6pad page http://quentinc.net/6pad/ only in french at the
moment, sorry.

Re: [Audyssey] Swamp question

2012-01-30 Thread Paul Lemm
Hi,

I don't know if it helps but i am unable to see my monitor so play all games
including swamp with the monitor off and I have found this method of
navigating using the mouse one of the most accessible. I haven't played
loads of audio games but swamp definitely allows for faster and more
accurate game play than others I have tried and does feel just like the old
mainstream first person shooters I used to play because of using the mouse .
I think if you used keys instead the game would be more difficult and
slower too. it takes a little getting used to but its definitely worth using
the mouse.

Hope this helps

Here's the thing Lori. You only need sight to use a mouse if you're
tracking the mouse pointer. When you move the mouse in Swamp, the audio
environment changes in a predictable way; move the mouse left, turn left,
move the mouse right, turn right. You don't really even to know left from
right, just be able to navigate using audio cues just as you would with a
cane or dog, with moving the mouse being equivalent to turning your body.

Once you've practiced, and put together a keyboard layout that uses the
hand

you're not moving the mouse with, you will be able to react quickly and
smoothly in a way you simply could not with a keyboard.

As others have posted here, please try it before judging whether or not
it's

accessible.

the config file makes it easy to understand anyway.
my advice is just keep at it, you'll get it eventually.

Hi Thomas, I have tried it out, but I can't seem to move at all, I hit d for
example but hear no step sounds, and all there is for a mouse is the actual
mouse pad built into my laptop computer, and the 2 buttons left and right,
but you can't actually turn the mouse, only press each button, I don't know
if moving my finger over the pad would move me or not, the other keys work
fine, for example the chat keys, and sellecting the weapons I have, but the
rest I'm still struggling with.

Its not in the official installer but its supposed to be a good ide.
vb is dropping away soon so all devs need to switch.
Bgt should have an ide that does all this stuff, its not exactly a

Its not impossible for bgt to have a basic ide its just no official
one exists, and the engine has been the main focus, maybe one should
be developed.

The blind can play this.
However if it doesn't work, spend the cash on a gaming mouse.
I was dissapointed when I started palying, I fiddled with my old

I have a logitech gaming mouse, sx518 gaming grade its called and

It cost me 60 nz bucks over here and was an upgrade from my 30 buck

So I got a gaming mouse, it doesn't have any extra programming

I also have a plantronics headset mic that splits the stereo field in

However you will need a relitively expensive headset to really enjoy,
your cheap 20 buck sets just won't cut it well.

You need to pay well around 200 bucks to get a good set or less.
Its worth it because they last ages and ages.

Once you've practiced, and put together a keyboard layout that uses the hand

Lori, your track pad will work by sliding your finger over it. One thing of
which to be aware is that some track pads have spots that act to click the
mouse buttons, which would not be helpful. Really, the best way is to pick
up a USB mouse and plug it in to your machine. They can be as much as $20,
but others have found them for less.

you're not moving the mouse with, you will be able to react quickly and
smoothly in a way you simply could not with a keyboard.

As others have posted here, please try it before judging whether or not it's
accessible.

  Hi Lori,
It is the same concept as using a keyboard totally blind, you just
get used to where the items you need are located.
I sent some tips to the list a while back on using the mouse for the
first time, perhaps someone could dig that post up and re post?

hi,
swamp was intended to be mouse controled to make it feel more mainstream.
however even though it takes a while to get used to, its easy enough
to get used to mouse control as the mouse cannot move outside the
window of the game.
also in an fps like this, learning to use a mouse completely defeats
keyboard control, as its much easier to have prosice movements among
other things.
if you need to config keys diferently such as the reload button etc,
the config file makes it easy to understand anyway.
my advice is just keep at it, you'll get it eventually.

changing
keys goes. Thanks from Lori.

usually a single tap on the pad will act as a single left click, so just
be careful not to just tap the pad. make your motions like a swiping
action, left or right, and you will be fine. i don't use an external
mouse, and have no need for one. i rather prefer a touch pad, because
its not based on you having space to move a mouse on a desktop.

[Audyssey] accessible online monopoly for blind and sighted?

2012-01-30 Thread David Mehler
Hello,

I don't know if this is out there, but I'm looking for two
lan-playable or online games, monopoly and chess. I'm looking to play
with sighted relatives and was wondering if there was either of these
two games, that I could use with a screen reader and they either
online or across a lan could use with a mouse and have a graphical
interface?

Thanks.
Dave.

Re: [Audyssey] accessible online monopoly for blind and sighted?

2012-01-30 Thread QuentinC

For monopoly, basicly you have :

1 - Monopoly in my playroom, it's fully online, but there is no graphics.
However, it doesn't mean that a sighted person can't play: texts are
readable on screen and option menus are selectable with the mouse. It's
just probably much less interesting for him compared to mainstream
solutions.

2 - Monopoly on RSGames, online as well, but there is no graphics either.
I don't know if texts are readable and menus usables with the mouse, but
I don't think so.

3 - There is the monopoly game from Jim Kitchen. The game isn't online
but you can play with multiple players on the same computer. I don't
know if there are graphics. Perhaps you could try.

2012-01-30 Thread Yohandy

Clement,
I try getting my facts mostly accurate before I post. You appear to imply
otherwise in your email. every single game I know about makes you pay $10
for the online pass. reason I threw that usually word out there is because
for all I know, not all games do this. however it's a fact that all games
I've encountered do. anyway here's proof from an internet search I just
conducted:
According to WB's email, customers without a code can play a two-day trial
online. After that, they're expected to shell out 800 Microsoft Points, or
$10,

to access it.
there you have it. btw free trial period appears to extend from 2 through 7
days. price is always the same though. and this is only for used copies. if
you have a brand new disc the code will be included on a card inside the
case. even if you have a used copy, perhaps the person didn't redeem the
code. check that card just in case.

Hi,

I do happen to have a copy of a wrecking ball game. It is made by Ken Downey
and DreamTechInteractive. It says it is a 1 level demo. If that is the 1 you
are looking for, and no one objects to me sending it to you, I would be more
than happen to do so.

Just let me know if this is the 1 you are looking for.

Sorry, no go on the air hockey game.

[Audyssey] learning how to write games

2012-01-30 Thread Laurel
Hey,
I have a question for those of you who write games and all. How did
you learn how to write the games that you have created? For example,
how did you learn the computer coding languages you needed, and how to
build your game from an idea to an actual game. Was there a course you
took, or something online or an accessible book you read that helped
you? I have several ideas I'd love to work on, but I really don't even
know where to begin. /smiles/

Here's the thing Lori. You only need sight to use a mouse if you're
tracking the mouse pointer. When you move the mouse in Swamp, the audio
environment changes in a predictable way; move the mouse left, turn
 left,
move the mouse right, turn right. You don't really even to know left
 from
right, just be able to navigate using audio cues just as you would
 with a
cane or dog, with moving the mouse being equivalent to turning your
 body.

Once you've practiced, and put together a keyboard layout that uses
 the hand
you're not moving the mouse with, you will be able to react quickly and
smoothly in a way you simply could not with a keyboard.

As others have posted here, please try it before judging whether or
 not it's
 accessible.

   Hi Lori,
It is the same concept as using a keyboard totally blind, you just
get used to where the items you need are located.
I sent some tips to the list a while back on using the mouse for the
first time, perhaps someone could dig that post up and re post?

 hi,
swamp was intended to be mouse controled to make it feel more
 mainstream.
however even though it takes a while to get used to, its easy enough
to get used to mouse control as the mouse cannot move outside the
 window of the game.
also in an fps like this, learning to use a mouse completely defeats
keyboard control, as its much easier to have prosice movements among
 other things.
if you need to config keys diferently such as the reload button etc,
the config file makes it easy to understand anyway.
my advice is just keep at it, you'll get it eventually.

there should be a totally blind-friendly version made availible.
 I'm not
sure how to go about trying to make the game work for me as far as
 changing
 keys goes. Thanks from Lori.
