Hi Ken,

I did not do as well as you did at Donkey Kong. Not sure that I ever even beat
level one.

Pole Position might have been my favorite as well. Pretty sure that I used to
get pole position. I even liked the time trial or practice mode. I would
practice taking the best lines through the turns etc. You know trying to get
better and better lap times.

I forget though which Atari games were for my 2600 and which were for my 800 XL
home computer.

That's odd Darren. Once I completed storm tribe successfully an encounter
showed up fairly quickly asking me to make a tribe, but I'm not absolutely

once you've done making of the storm tride, options to make a tribe will

I managed to get a tribe formed in the twelth year, and then was lucky

[Audyssey] Finished a drk room

2014-01-07 Thread dark
okay I've finished the game now. Lots of fun and I'll certainly do it again. my
completion time was 267 minutes. once I knew you could turn an explored
location into an outpost, things worked far better.

In general a really awsome game, though i wish it'd been longer with more items
and different locations and more stuff to find on the map.

Beware! spoilage ahoy!

I don't know what Aaron means regarding south or finding helpful stuff. I
found enemies got harder the further I went from the village, but things didn't
particularly change regarding loot , the battlefield is the highest quality
loot area and the place to get the carbine and batteries, but other than that I
didn't find anything different apart from the two story locations, the wrecked
ship and the swamp. funnily enough as I said regarding exploring, I think I
probably just did everything the wrong way around since I didn't know you could
get water from explored locations making it harder to go to further away
places. When I realized I needed alien alloy for the ship I just sold off all
my firs, teeth and scales to the merchant, and wound up with a ship with 29
hp, (you can tell how much resources I had, particularly since I traded some
firs for teeth).

I wasn't sure if 29 would be enough but it turned out it was, - just!

the only weerd occurrence I had was o I only gave the chap in the swamp one
jewel, so only got one comment from him, but then I seemed to have more for
some reason, but couldn't find the swamp again. I also notice the amulet has
indicators on the map so I wonder if there is an encounter I missed there,
particularly since the ending with the starship was a little grim, it
would have been nice to take my slaves off with me, and I do wonder what
happened to the builder in the end.

A great game though and one which will certainly get a db page, I also
particularly hope it gets expanded or even a sequal.

Beware the grue!

Hi Ken.
You need to get the gift giving amount exactly right, since you don't want
to look like either a fool or a miser. If I remember rightly 10 cows is a
fair gift and 20 is a generous one, (ie one for a clan who are really!
pissed off at you), but check the manual section on relations for the exact
numbers.

I do agree though, some exact recommendations of amounts for gifting,

I just grabbed this game and have found it to be very interesting.
As for exploring east or some other direction, I think it's as vague
for us as it is for our sighted counterparts.
I rather enjoy the fact that everything is just a bit uncertain.

I have a rather embarrassing question though. How do you get to the
manual once you're in the game? Can you?

 Hi Darren.

There's no other wayof saying it, hero quests are hard and take lots of
 preparation.

Firstly you need to make sure you've got a worshipper of the right God
 on
the ring, and one with good stats. Then you need to have a couple of
 magic
points in quests just to make sure. Asking aide from anothe another
 tribe
 can help too.

Finally you really! need to make sure you have read the tail of the
 hero
quest quest you want to do and are certain of what actions to take,
 since
it's possible to completely mess up hero quests if you choose the wrong
 choice.

While I completed the short game and have thus done a few quests,
(particularly the making of the storm tribe), they're certainlly not
 easy
to do and even with all the best preparations your chances of success
 aren't ever %100.

 Beware the grue!

Hi Decota.

the manual is in a weerd place, it's in the law section with all the myths,

I recommend reading and referring to it a lot.

Annoyingly, though it's available on Asharp's own site the pdf seemed a

Hi Audyssey,

This is Kwasi Mensah, the developer behind Stem Stumper, a game I know a

It's this awesome combination of Connect 4 and Scrabble that lets you play

should hopefully also be out for iPhone/iPads by the end of the month.

It's not quite an audio game. It's a word/strategy game that we've spent a
lot of time with Talkback to make accessible. I'm going to be reaching out
to podcasters to make sure there's a good audio tutorial to help guide
people through the learning curve. But don't be afraid to email me any

 Hi Darren.

once you've done making of the storm tride, options to make a tribe
 will

turn up, it's actually a really interesting bit of the game.

I managed to get a tribe formed in the twelth year, and then was
 lucky

enough that my chief got to be King. I actually really liked him, he
started off worshipping heumact, but failed a hero quest and ended up
worshipping orlanth, but had really high leadership and battle skills,
sort of the perfect king :D.

I've not tried the long game yet since after finishing the short game
 I
wanted a bit of a break, though I might try another short game just
 to
get back into the wing of things.

I've done the making of the stormtribe quest. I haven't seen any

 Hi Darren.

There's no other wayof saying it, hero quests are hard and take lots
 of
 preparation.

Firstly you need to make sure you've got a worshipper of the right
 God
 on
the ring, and one with good stats. Then you need to have a couple of
 magic
points in quests just to make sure. Asking aide from anothe another
 tribe
 can help too.

Finally you really! need to make sure you have read the tail of the
 hero
quest quest you want to do and are certain of what actions to take,
 since
it's possible to completely mess up hero quests if you choose the
 wrong
 choice.

While I completed the short game and have thus done a few quests,
(particularly the making of the storm tribe), they're certainlly not
 easy
to do and even with all the best preparations your chances of
 success
 aren't

Hi Audyssey,

This is Kwasi Mensah, the developer behind Stem Stumper, a game I know a
lot of people on this list enjoy. I wanted to let everyone know that we
just released our newest game
SpellStackhttp://www.ananseproductions.com/spellstack/.
It's this awesome combination of Connect 4 and Scrabble that lets you play
your friends online that you can see in action
herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWEz1OIARUI.
You can pick it up on the Google Play App
Storehttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ananse.Helena
right
now. We're still working getting through Apple's submission process but we
should hopefully also be out for iPhone/iPads by the end of the month.

It's not quite an audio game. It's a word/strategy game that we've spent a
lot of time with Talkback to make accessible. I'm going to be reaching out
to podcasters to make sure there's a good audio tutorial to help guide
people through the learning curve. But don't be afraid to email me any
questions at kwasi.men...@ananseproductions.com

Hi guys.
I'm not sure how open this topic is anymore, but there's another game
that I think you guys should be aware of. It's a bit like Minecraft,
but it's in a 2d setting, a side scroller.
That would be both a lot more doable and a lot easier to actually pull
off as an accessible game.

I'm not suggesting that we could play Terraria either, but it's a
concept worth looking at, and frankly I think it's a much better game
than Minecraft.

Re: [Audyssey] android games

2014-01-07 Thread Dakotah Rickard
Consider this.

Right now, most of the info on Android that you find on the net is
outdated and not really workable in terms of research. For current
data, check out the eyes-free google group. It's active, open, and
friendly.

Furthermore, Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.0, is really making strides
in terms of market numbers, and 4.2 Jellybean isn't terribly far
behind.

Sure, you see a bunch of people running older stuff, but that's not
really the fault of the people or the device. Most Android devices
have been phones and similar, devices whose upgrades aren't at
consumer discression. In fact, there is good info that if carriers and
device-makers would allow it, Android 4.4 would actually run pretty
well even on older tech.

Finally, there's the issue of suspending and reactivating Talkback.
When I was a total Android newb, I didn't know how it could be done
easily, but then I figured it out, and now I'm as contented with the
Android market as with the iOS one. In fact, I'm starting to see some
of the glaring holes in iOS that I missed before.

I suppose my basic point is this. Why not try it? Why not develop a
simple game, charge a buck for it, and see if people take the bait.
Better yet, get people interested with a completely awful free game,
then just increase your price point from there.
The time and energy involved wouldn't be too large a commitment, as
Android development can easily be done in Java, a program language
both familiar and relatively easy to use and implement.

Don't give up on Android just yet, and don't assume that anything you
find out, unless it's both current and first-hand is an accurate
portrayal of the capabilities of Android.

I don't know if this will change your mind, but I hope it will open
the door and plant a seed.

why I hesitate to venture into the Android market at this time,
because I'd end up getting little payment for the time and energy
involved and would probably only make barely enough to cover the costs
for the minimum sounds, music, and probably some voice acting. Of
course, that assumes I use commercial sound libraries, musicians, and
voice actors rather than volunteer work which varies in quality from
 person to person.

What you choose to do with your time is another matter. If this is
something you really want I suggest you get a book on Java programming
and study it. The only way the Android audio games market will grow is
by people who are dedicated to the platform and who have no interest
in making a large financial profit off of it. Like Linux Android is

apps and games for it as well as be an end user of the software.

[Audyssey] A dark room, alternative ending and developer thoughts

2014-01-07 Thread dark
I sent a mail to the developer of A dark room, to firstly say I liked the game
and particularly the access, and to ask about possible expantions or future
plans.

He (I believe the name Amir is a man's name), said that he didn't plan to
expand the game since he felt the current length was as he wanted. however he
is thinking of more games, possibly even aprequal, though he'd appreciate
people to give the game good reviews and publicity.

One thing he did tell me though which I am trying now, is that the game has an
alternative ending, which is tantamount to a different play mode. to get it,
you need to complete the game without building a singlehut! that's right, no
slaves at all! this obviously means you need to explore and battle for all your
 materials, which changes gameplay around.

The only annoying part is that to unlock the first exploration stage you
actually need to build traps, which is a rather long process just by gathering
20 wood a pop, (nobody said this was an easy mode).

I'm trying it now, just because I did rather enjoy this game, and I can see
the alternate ending being quite a challenge to get since it needs far more
exploring.

The developer did state he's looking for 5 star reviews, so if people like the
game perhaps they can contribute, to encourage the developer to do more in the
same style, or perhaps even something more ambicious next time, (last I checked
you needed facebook to write a review so annoyingly I couldn't, but when I am
back at my flat with my bluetooth keyboard I'll try again).

Beware the grue!

Dark.

lot of time with Talkback to make accessible. I'm going to be reaching out
to podcasters to make sure there's a good audio tutorial to help guide
people through the learning curve. But don't be afraid to email me any
 questions at kwasi.men...@ananseproductions.com

Re: [Audyssey] MindCraft for the blind.

2014-01-07 Thread shaun everiss

Well I played minecraft with my cousin on his xbox 360.
Firstly the music is utter crap.
It may have improved in the pc version but it
made my ears want to drop off after just a minute of listening.

The sound fx sounded like they were coming out of a crappy sound box kids use.
Now I am not saying sound boxes are crap I have 2
of them but I wouldn't concidder them worthy of playing games with.

There is supposed to be more sounds that are better.
But unless minecraft was made tesxt based or
something I think I'd get bored after 5 minutes of play, I quit using it.

Hi listers
Minecraft itself was quite cheap, considering
the price of 15 euros when I purchased it. But
as those guys are actually pushing the limits of
Java, the humble talking about accessibility of
mine fell on deaf ears, but so long it's ok, my
relatives are playing under my account and
enjoying it immensely. Minecraft as a matter of
fact doesn't even have a ton of sounds attached
to it, if not talking about mods. The only thing
that needs to be realised here is that I think
we are coming to the point where people are not
afraid any more having a 100x100 map layed out
before them and navigating it if sufficient data
is provided. David Greenwood with his T.O.T.
managed to make a small incursion into the land
of such big maps and I hope that when T.O.T.
gets updated it gets much more into it. But this
is generally more to speaking about the strategy games.
Was there anything so difficult about mortal
kombat? No. The answer is simple, the playroom
is small, so moving is limited, but what really
gave the game it's replayability was the
intelligent AI and the fact that you needed to
act fast as hell, thereby producing huge amounts
of adrenaline. Mortal kombat was easily beatable
by anyone without sight. Now coming to the new
mortal kombats on consoles or the last one on
pc, than the story modes and such puzzles would
need some tweaks for those who can't see, but
it's all a question of making it. At this point
I would think it could be easier to program a
game similar to minecraft or civilisation,
because before civ4, even they didn't make heavy
use of sounds and background music.

Thousand thanks for reading
with kind regards
Dengo Jürgen

Re: [Audyssey] android games

2014-01-07 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dakotah:

Up until a couple of days ago I was on the Eyes Free mailing list, and
I believe my information is as up to date as it needs to be. I
seriously looked into Android game development, and decided for the
moment it is not for me. I think that is what you, Josh, and some
others perhaps are overlooking. I did the necessary research, checked
out a few phones, and decided in the end it was not very economic from
a business perspective.

That is not to say my mind is absolutely set in stone. On the contrary
I like where Google is heading with accessibility, I am of course well
versed in Java, and I may revisit the issue once KitKat etc becomes
more common on phones and tablets. Plus as I am interested in
commercially targeting the platform I'd really like to see more blind
users for Android than there appears to be currently. Also as I do not
personally own any Android phones or tablets to test my games and
other software I'd have to invest in one, and any software I may or
may not write in the future for the platform would be predicated on
the fact that I would buy one for use and would have a personal desire
to see more games for the platform. Until these things happen I'm
holding off for a while.
