Hi Greg,

Ummm..That's a spear not a sphere. Smile.

As for the sound that starts and stops that is one of the new
vanishing platforms I'm adding to beta 17. You'll be seeing more of
them through the new game. As per demand people wanted to see those
traps carried over from Montezuma's Revenge to MOTA.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Rock Remix

2010-11-22 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,

That's alright. A lot of VI gamers don't know the difference in game
types, styles, etc do to their total lack of experience with
mainstream games. Lots of people think Shades of Doom is 3d when in
fact it isn't. It has 3d audio, but it technically would be classified
as a 2d FPS because you are still limited to a 2d plain with only
north, south, east, west movement with no ability to travel along a
third axis up/down. That third axis of movement makes all the
difference in the world as it adds, well, another dimmention to the
game play.

For example, in MOTA 3D harpies actually hover around in the air above
you, and you have to aim your gun up as well as turn left/right to
shoot them. They aren't just straight ahead of you like a centaur or
skeleton might be. That, of course, is completely different from the
side-scroller game most people know now, because you really have to
aim your gun fairly precisely to hit anything. Not only that but the
traps are different two. Some traps you might be able to skirt by
walking around the edges, while others, you will have to jump over to
get passed them. It is a totally different experience altogether.

Cheers!

Hi Lori,

Yeah. Well, that is the difference between a 2d environment like
Shades of Doom and a 3d environment like MOTA 3D. Besides the ability
to go north, south, east, and west there is a specific element to move
up and down through the game world too. Either by climbing up or down
on something like a rope or ladder, or to be able to jump up onto
something, or jump down from something. It is a totally different
concept from that used in any accessible game to date, but is quite
common in mainstream games. That's one reason why I felt a bit put out
to actually create a side-scroller as that style of game is pretty
much ancient history as far as the general mainstream boys are
concerned.

Clear back as early as the mid 1990's we saw the first-person and
third-person style game play take over the way people played video
games. Quake, Jedi Knight, Tomb Raider, etc were very revolutionary
for their time. The mainstream game industry pretty much just
continued from their, and we are technologically falling behind by
clinging to arcade games and side-scrollers in my opinion.

As per request I have added some vanishing platforms to the game.
People who played Montezuma's Revenge no doubt noticed the same sound
of the platform was used here in the demo of beta 17.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Rock Remix

2010-11-21 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Lori,

Keep in mind why I used the alt key in the first place though. In MOTA
3D Angela Carter has a number of extra movements including but not
excluding: jumping, running, walking, climbing, turning, etc. For
example, in the 3d version of the game turn right 90 is control+right
arrow. If I change jump to control what key combo is turn rright 90?

Anyway, as far as most side-scrollers using the control key for
jumping I think you are basing your assumption on only blind audio
games. In the mainstream the alt key is most often the jump key. Games
like Tomb Raider, at least the older versions, used alt for jump,
control for the action key, and shift for walk.

Hi Lori,
Hmmm...which ones? Also recall that in MOTA 3D you'll have to use some key
to flip directions...the alt key? And if you want to know my thoughts here,
I'd suspect you'd be doing that a lot more than jumping.

Hi Lori,

The reason it says "burning torch" is because the torch is burning
when you get it. If you notice when you grab one off the wall you hear
it go out. Angela relights it when it is needed.

As for adding a visited here before key that shouldn't be a problem.
That is a fairly simple addition to the game. In fact, the
functionality is already in the engine, but I just never asigned it to
any thing because I didn't think it was needed in a 2d side-scroller.

Cheers!

The torch is burning when you pick it up, so what it says is correct. It
does go out when you take it from the wall for later use. Do you really
need a key to tell you if you've been in a room before in a two dimensional

Hi Hayden,

Yes, in a manner of speaking. All the old bosses are still in the
game, but have been reasigned to different levels. I've been playing
with the layout some with beta 17 and have decided to make Arachne and
the Lamia the first two bosses. The Cyclops, Nessus, Kerberos,
Minotaur, etc come later in the game with newer and better stats.

Re: [Audyssey] MOTA Rock Remix

2010-11-21 Thread Thomas Ward

Cheers!

Already done. Several people have made that request to return the jump
key back to control which I have done in beta 17. So that is
definitely no problem. Consider it done.

Oh and I meant to also ask if you'd think about maybe re-asigning the

when you've got your hands on the keyboard to go for the control key not
alt. Maybe it's just a me thing.

Hi Tom would you also consider adding in a key which would say yes or no
depending on your location, so you could remember if you've been there
before or not, it'd save a lot of wandering around. Also when you pick up
a torch since it isn't lit yet shouldn't the game just say torch instead

No. There is a lot of stuff still being worked on that wasn't featured
in the game play. For example, the game registration system, level 3,
and a few other things I've got going. I wouldn't expect any updates
until December or so. Of course, I'm not going to give any specific
dates at this point, because I don't know myself.

Hi Charles,

Yeah, it is cool. Right now I just played a game with Michael
Jackson's Thriller album in the background. Imagine fighting monsters
to Beat It and Thriller. Now, that is fun.

Although, like I said in a previous e-mail I often play with harder
stuff in the background. Metallica, AC-DC, Guns N' Roses, etc.
Something to really get the adrenaline going, and ready to punch,
kick, shoot, and shread anything that gets in my way. I picked lighter
stuff for the rock demonstration as I know some people are offended by
really hard rock and perfanity.

Cheers!
