Hi Trenton,
Well, Part of the problem is the old levels are completely uncompatible
with the new engine. In order to add the original levels I would have to
completely write them from scratch. I'm actually a bit surprised that
people are this interested in the classic levels.
I mean I can add them, but I personally find them a bit dull compared to
the kinds of levels I had planned on creating for the game.

hi Tom.

wow! it's taken me a while to get to this E-mail. The new game sounds
great, I've been wanting something decent in 2D for ages, and this is
certainly sounding good.

Presumably, sinse the genesis engine will now do 2d, when you eventually
release the engine as a game creation tool, it'll be possible to make 2D
games with it? that would be great!

You could also considder a level editer for Mota, though I could
understand if either A this wouldn't be possible technically, or B, you'd
prefer to keep the game and it's elements stand alone and not have people
mucking about with it too much.

finally, I gather from your explanation that the actual structure of the
levels is redesigned, which is great! I do however stil admire the initial
level design and gameplay of the first Monti game, (I have the old 10 beta
installed on my laptop), and I was wondering if either A you could release
the levels as some kind of level pack for mota (a side quest with no plot,
just for nostalgia), or B, rename the old game to something else and
release it as is.

i really think that hard work you put in shouldn't go to waste, and while
undoubtedly the new game will be an improvement, it's also worth
remembering that the old one was good in it's way as well, good
enough for myself, and many other people to pay for.

WouldIt would be good though I think, - assuming of course that it's

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games News 11/10/2008

2008-11-11 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
No, I think you misunderstood what I said, and perhaps I didn't explain
clearly what I meant. In my news letter I mentioned that MOTA is based
on a modified Genesis 3D engine. I took the Genesis 3D engine and
modified it specifically for MOTA making it an engine in its own right.
Though, the majority of the MOTA engine is based on the same classes,
functions, etc as Genesis 3D. However, they aren't 100% identical.
For example, in the main Genesis 3D engine it uses a virtual 3D audio
environment to process sounds and create the audio environment. However,
since MOTA is a 2D side-scroller 3D processing is not only over kill
sounds would not be positioned correctly in your speakers. As a result I
have had to modify the SoundPosition function and completely rewrite it
to perform 2D audio processing rather than 3D audio processing. That is
just one of many examples of why it has taken me so long to put out MOTA.
Anyway, the point is when Genesis 3D eventually gets released you will
be getting the actual Genesis 3D engine and not this 2D modified
version. This modified version is a quick and dirty way to get MOTA
released to the public as quickly and as efficiently as possible.
As far as releasing a level editor to the public no I won't be doing
so. I have a couple of good reasons why i have elected not to.
First,I plan to release some levels with the game perhaps 10 to 12 with
version 1.0, but come out with more levels in the future. If I release a
level editor for the game with 1.0 there really would be no point or
insentive to upgrade the game since end users could do it themselves for
the most part.
Second, the level editor I have created for MOTA isn't exactly what
anyone could call newby user friendly. While I can draw the levels with
the editor I still need to edit some variables by hand in the code. I
haven't yet gotten around to making a editor for Genesis that allows you
to do everything from the level editor or by editing various
configuration files. Basically, like I said most of this is still crude,
and it is that way because I am rushing the game out the door.
After MOTA 1.0 is released and USA Raceway is finished I plan to spend
six months to a year just working on making Genesis 3D into an easy to
use user friendly game engine. I have several games I want to create,
but Genesis needs months of work yet before anyone else besides myself
could create levels with it.

Hi orin,
Yes, the Genesis 3D engine, full engine, is indeed 3D. The Genesis
engine MOTA is based on is a modified version of the Genesis 3D engine

hi Tom.

wow! it's taken me a while to get to this E-mail. The new game sounds great,
I've been wanting something decent in 2D for ages, and this is certainly
sounding good.

I do however stil admire the initial
level design and gameplay of the first Monti game, (I have the old 10 beta
installed on my laptop), and I was wondering if either A you could release
the levels as some kind of level pack for mota (a side quest with no plot,
just for nostalgia), or B, rename the old game to something else and release
it as is.

Re: [Audyssey] USA Games News 11/10/2008

2008-11-11 Thread dark
Fair enough thom, i clearly got the wrong end of the stick when you
mentioned in the news using Genesis 3D to create a 2D game, and I can see
why doing cunning but complex things with the editer to create 2D instead of
3d effects wouldn't exactly be user friendly.

i'm afraid though i don't agree with you that releasing a level editer would
stop people from upgrading the game.

Unless you were thinking of releasing the upgrades to the levels as actually
new commercially available level packs for the game, the way Pinball
party pack vol 1 is a commercial expantion of esp Pinball extreme, i really
don't see why people would not bother upgrading the game. Afterall, however
many levels people created, the chances of them being exactly the same as
your own official levels for the game would be very slim.

pluss, unless you released some fairly extensive editing tools such as an
object creator, or complete game code editer, you'd be the only person able
to make substantive changes to the game such as adding new enemies.

so even if a level editer (as many mainstream editers did), allowed players
the chance to place the game elements anywhere they wished in levels,
or even use their own audio cutscenes, background ambience etc, only you
yourself as the creator of the game would actually be able to make
completely new elements with new behaviour and effects on gameplay,
such as other enemies and power-ups, and for those things, even if
not for your own level designs, it'd be worth people upgrading.

A similar mainstream example can be found with prince of Persia, which
had a level editer, yet also a sequal, prince of Persia 2 which worked on
the same basic game engine, but had substantially different enemies and some
gameplay alterations, none of which would've been possible with the editer.

obviously though, even a basic object placement editer would require some
fairly extensive work to create, particularly if you need to monkey about
with variables in the game code, so this is probably going speculationwards.

whether your planning on commercial or free level pack expantions, i must
say that as an eexploration fan, i think it's a great idea!

Hi Trenton,
Actually, the level editor for the first Tomb Raider games was written
by a third-party developer. It was never officially supported by Edos
Interactive and Core Design.
However, the new Legend engine used to develope Tomb Raider Legend,
Anniversary, and Underworld does have a level editor. You can do all
kinds of things including give Lara Croft new outfits etc.

Hi Trenton,
Well, Part of the problem is the old levels are completely uncompatible
with the new engine. In order to add the original levels I would have to
completely write them from scratch. I'm actually a bit surprised that

I mean I can add them, but I personally find them a bit dull compared to

2008-11-11 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Trenton,
Actually, Tomb Hunter doesn't use any Tomb Raider sounds and music that
you gave me for copyright reasons. However, that said, I do plan to
create special Tomb Raider theme packs you can install which will
convert Tomb Hunter into what amounts to Tomb Raider complete with Lara
Croft, official Tomb Raider music, and some sound effects.
For example, about a month ago I just ripped my copy of Tomb Raider of
Angel of Darkness and have created a huge Angel of Darkness theme pack.
It includes official sound effects for Lara Croft, several voice
messages, official Angel of Darkness theme music, etc. If I add the
sounds as extras then if Edos gets on my case about the sounds it
doesn't actually effect the game and engine. All I legally would have to
do is remove the theme pack from my sight while leaving the game up. You
see how that works.
Anyway, the Tomb Hunter web site idea is kind of cool. I will certainly
look into it when Part 1, Mysteries of the Ancients, gets nearer to
completion.

Hi Trenton,
Well, Part of the problem is the old levels are completely uncompatible with
the new engine. In order to add the original levels I would have to completely
write them from scratch. I'm actually a bit surprised that people are this
interested in the classic levels.
I mean I can add them, but I personally find them a bit dull compared to the
kinds of levels I had planned on creating for the game.

I agree as well, to release the original Monty levels as part of a level
pack. Why don't we call it:
Tomb Hunter MOTA, The Lost Levels.

[Audyssey] USA Games News 11/10/2008

2008-11-10 Thread Thomas Ward

USA Games News

Nov. 10, 2008

Introduction

Greetings gamers,
Welcome to the November issue of the USA Games News. Admittedly there is

not a lot of news to report this month, but what I do have to say is

good news. Especially, for those waiting for USA Games to release

Mysteries of the Ancients.
Since mid September USA Games has been exclusively been working on

Mysteries of the Ancients in every ounce of free time we can spare on

the project. As a result there is nothing to report on USA Raceway,

Final Conflict II, and other projects we are working on. So I plan to

devote this entire news letter to Mysteries of the Ancients. With that

said let's get to the news.

Tomb Hunter
Mysteries of the Ancients

In the last issue of the USA Games News we told you that we had decided

to go back to the .NET based engine with Microsoft DirectX 9.0C for the

initial release of MOTA instead of the newer Java engine we were

working on. We are happy to announce that work on the .NET based

version of the game is going very very well. Fortunately for us we

already had put several months into the .NET based engine so it was

merely a matter of picking up where we had left off. As a result we are

beginning to actually get back on schedule, and we are closing in on a

stable test release for the private testers with in the month. Assuming

that test release is stable enough to go public it is possible that a

new demo may appear before Christmas. It all depends on if the new game

is stable enough to post at that time.
One of the questions that often comes up off list is what is different

about MOTA vs Montezuma's Revenge? That is a good question. Lots

really. There are both technical changes as well as many changes in

game play. The game's story also has been completely rewritten from

scratch to give the game a new and interesting plot. Below is a

description of the game and its new story.
The story. After Dr. Angela Carter receives a long lost Greek epic

about a mysterious Orb of Wisdom, created by the Goddess Athena, Angela

travels to Greece in search of the lost Orb of Wisdom. After quite a

lot of research Angela eventually locates an under ground labyrinth

where Athena had hidden the orb. Little does Angela know that this is

the beginning of her troubles.
Inside the underground labyrinth she must over come various traps

including: poison darts, metal spikes, pits of boiling lava, and

towering walls of fire. She must fight or flee several creatures like:

fire throwing centaurs, sword wielding skeleton warriors, and flying

harpies. Inside the temple Angela will locate various dropped items

such as daggers, swords, a bow and arrow, guns and ammo packs left

behind by previous explorers, ancient reed torches, various gold coins,

and more. If Angela Carter makes it to the Hall of Wisdom alive she

must defeat a giant dragon before she can possess the Orb of Wisdom.
Besides the story the engine itself has undergone months of redesign

and work. When I had initially created Montezuma's Revenge it was

created to be a stand alone game. That is all of the game's code was

designed specifically for that single game. When I began work on MOTA I

decided to start over with the game engine. What sets this new engine

apart from the old engine is that MOTA itself is a modified version of

the Genesis 3D engine designed to support 2D side-scrollers instead of

3D FPS games. What is nice about this is it has a common game core with

our Genesis engine so what changes we make to the engine can be easily

plugged into MOTA in future updates. Here is a real life example of how

sharing a common game core works to our advantage.
About a week ago while testing the latest test build of MOTA I

discovered Angela would not pick up certain items, open doors, or kill

monsters if they were to her left. It worked fine if they were to her

right. I eventually traced the error back to the GetDirection()

function which is contained in Genesis3D.dll for calculating the

direction to monsters, items, doors, whatever. I had messed up the

formula on accident when writing that function and I was getting some

pretty off the wall results. I corrected the formula, recompiled the

dll, and suddenly everything worked fine. Since games like Raceway and

STFC also depend on the Genesis3D.dll for many in game calculations,

Sapi support, etc as soon as I fixed the error in the dll all of my

current projects were simultaneously fixed at once. I modified one

file, one formula, and since the Genesis3D.dll is in a common build

directory the next time I compile STFC, Raceway, or something else the

new changes will take effect. Pretty cool eh?

Bottom line, I've put a lot of time and energy into making Mysteries of

the Ancients very stable, error free, and making it more modular based.

With the new engine being designed as it has it will be easier to

maintain, and upgrade as needed.
aside from the many technical changes in the
