Hello to Everyone.

I freely admit that my own reaction here may have been just as over
sensative as any in this rather ridiculous situation.

thanks to some time, and all the very appreciative messages I recieved, I
realized that perhaps my going off in a sulk would be a childish reaction
and rather over blown given the situation.

so, i will not be leaving the list, and thanks again to the many mails I
recieved from people.

I would however like to use the time to remind people of the fact that sinse
mails are text, it is only the words someone reads that convey meaning.

Thus sentences or points of tone that would be perfectly acceptable offline
given the right intonation, appear quite different online.

for instance, my brother always pickes up the phone and greets me with
"greetings fool!"

On the phone in my brothers tone of voice this is fine, however would I
say it to someone on list or E-mail? - heck no!

analysing the recent crysis, it seems that this is what happened, comments
were taken out of context, people got irritated and the hole thing rather
escalated.

Might I recommend that everyone, distinctly and deffinately including
myself, show some forthought in reading our comments and mails, and some
considderation of what another person would see reading them.

then perhaps such a ridiculous farse can be avoided in future, and also
perhaps things can be repared.

All the best,

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] going off list

2011-07-20 Thread Bob Montowski

Hello there everyone,

In the last 5 years I have tried to teach myself Visual Basic 6 and am now
starting on Dark Basic.
I have truly enjoyed playing Jim's VB6 games. It was part of the reason I
started toe teach myself VB6.
I sort of took attitude towards Jim as his VB6 games were not written to be
multi-player over the net.
I "knew" in my heart I had no right at all to push Jim to change his games
and I startrted to write some simple VB6 games to do multi-player over the
net.
I quickly found out that this task to do multiplayer is not easy at all. It
was very hard!
I am glad I did not let my attitude run amuck and say anything at all to
Jim.
Learning any language on your own can be quite taxing and very time
consuming.

The games I wished to write were never really brought up on this list.
I did not wish to be attacked for picking a game that was too simple or too
cmplex.
While I did understand Thomas's side of his not wishing to use VB6 as it
might not be usable in future operating system, I did understand the other
side too.
Blind folks are not so quick with their bit of money to go get new operating
systmes and would likely stick with somehting that would indeed run VB6
games just fine for years to come.
I think this list went off track when different folks tarted to give their
opinions on which language to go with.

They should have just said I use this or that and left it at that.
But opinions are like butts, everyone has one and some were just more
willing to show theirs off than others.

To everyone who has written a good game and sold it...Congrats!
To everyone who has written a good game and gave it away cause they are very
kind souls...God Bless You.
To everyone who wants to write a good game, don't be disheartened. Start
small and add to it a little at a time until you have somehting you would be
proud to add your name to and show others.
When I get my game done I'll share with this fine community. I have enjoyed
what you shared and I wish to return the favor.
If you never programmed before but think you know exaclty how a game should
be changed or improved you don't have a clue how hard this can be.
Make your suggestion or post your idea and then let it go. If the game
developer can do it, has the time and patience to do it, Has the free time
in his life and is not burdened by a job, church, taxes, children, school,
health issues...then maybe just maybe they'll take your idea to heart and
add it to their game.
Don't hold your breath waiting tho. As you don't program and have no clue
how hard this task can be.
I know I don't post more than once a year, but this list has been running
wild for over a year now and I thought it was time to bring a bit of wisdom
back from an older man.
Play nice and be fair. Share what you can and don't be so quick to take
offense to what others think.
This is a game playing list. Talk about playing games and the fun of such a
wonderful thing.
Tomorrow is not promised to anyone. Enjoy each day the the great things we
can do as blind gamers.

I'll put my soap box away now.
Now run along and enjoy yourselves.
If there is one thing I learned getting to my age is that feelings will be
hurt.

I also learned that time will heal hurt feelings.
Give it time and I am sure we will once again see Thomas here.
This is a great place with great minds, he will be attracted to come back.
Let him heal and he will return one day.

Robert

Re: [Audyssey] going off list

2011-07-20 Thread Dallas O'Brien
hi all, and most especially, dark.
dark, i have to say, it tends to be your posts, that i look for,
whether it be a review, a question, a point made, or any other of a
number of things you post about. as a quiet member who posts very
little, i have not spoken to you much if ever. but take it from
somebody who has stood back, and seen all these posts after letting
them collect up and read the hold set, you are not at fault.
now, to all.
i come here, as its a place for gaming, fun, and pleasure. to see it
destroyed, by arguments like this, ... who wanted this to be a soap
opera?
all joking aside, i am very disappointed, to see this kind of thing
breake out, as i thought this list to be mostly free from such things.
unfortunately, we have now lost a game devolper, from this list. the
list of people willing and more important, able, to create games for
this community, is very small.
at the same time, i have to say this.
what you do, and how you deel with your family, and other outside
social groups, is your deelings. if you feel that something is rong
with that side, the side who are having to deel with your life as a
programmer, perhaps you should be sorting that out, rather then
putting it on the list?
as was said in another thread. if something is failing in a
rleationship, that is because somebody in that relationship is not
doing something right.
anyways, moving on swiftlyu ...
add in sound of galaping horse
i have to say, after reading posts from the last few days, i am
looking at weather its werth my time staying on this list, even for
game anouncements.
i know this kind of thing happens very little on here, touch wood, but
at the same time, i am beginning to wander.
to those pragrammers who read this list.
thankyou for creating the games you do. even if i have problems with
some games in how they operate, and no, its not because of a
particular code, i am not a programmer, much though i wish i could, i
have tried, and it herts my head. lol. but my point beeing, i am not a
programmer, so i won't begin to say how you should make your game. if
you ask for sijestions, i will put in sijestions. but otherwise,
unless i see a glaring problem in something, i'll leave things up to
you. after all, you are the mum or dad of that code, not i.
ok, my rant is over. lol. i'll go hide in my little corner again now.
please excuse any spelling mistakes, as i was kinda letting this be a
flow of thinking.
best regards.

Hello Everyone.

my intention in trying to find out about programming languages was just
that, to gain information.

I never intended my questions to lead to this amount of strong emotions
from so many people, or this sort of highly personal, unpleasant
arguement..

I am only sorry i wasn't able to undo the damage I did on clearly
something which was obviously a far more sensative subject than I thought.

I would like to say i'm sorry to everyone concerned that I managed to
cause this sort of trouble on list.

while for reasons of recieving game announcements and producing news on
audiogames.net, I cannot legitimately unsubscribe from the list, i will
however not be reading any mail that is not directly concerned with a new
game release, ie, does not have a subject like Jim kitchin's recent homer
announcement.

I do not know how long I will need maintain this, but certainly for as
long as it takes me to better work out how to show considderation and tact
towards others, put my own opinions in a polite and none provocative way
and avoid causing offense through enquiries.

I will also be seriously! reconsidering whether I am qualified to continue

Hi Dark.
Hopefully you are still reading long enough to see these replies from people.
I am to be totally honest with you, slightly alarmed by your message.
You are, in my opinion, a key member of this list and a great
moderator of the Entombed discussion list. I can't say anything about
audiogames forum as I never use it.
I for one would be disappointed if you took your suggested action.
You had nothing to do with the arguement, it just happened to kick off
on a thread that you had started, but you asked a perfectly alright
question and never antaganised or upset anyone. From what I can see
you never sent a message during the whole thing that offended or at
least should have offended anyone. And you can not be blaimed in any
way at all for what happened. I think its a crying shame mate that you
can even considder holding yourself in any way responsible.
Cheers
Richard

Hello Dark,

Today we're talking casualties. We've lost one developer, Thomas. I've
seen messages where members have expressed concerns as to whether this
situation will also cause Che and Jeremy and maybe others to give up.
Let me say that I hope they do not, I enjoy playing their games,
either demos or full versions, and think it would be an even greater
blow to the blind gaming community if they also went away.

That last line can also be applied to you, I would say personally
please do not take the actions you have indicated. I saw nothing wrong
with the question you asked, I've asked similar, and I do read your
messages as I find them both informative, insightful, and in some
cases humerous. I'll agree with others that this was not your fault,
and if we've lost one for sure, with the possibility of loosing two
more maybes, I'd think it would be a much more prefound tragedy if
your contributions dimished as a result of this.

Dave.
