 Hi Geremy,
Agreed. I am not as interested in so much the full custom driver, car,
and track thing is making the game more authentic to true Nascar driving
and racing. In this respect having a human doing announcements is much
better. Especially, when there needs to be some excitement in the
 announcement.
For example, you are on the final lap you are the leader. You want the
announcement to say something in an excited sportsmans voice, One more
 lap until victory lain!
Other senarios require equal emotion to make the game feel real. Like
Thomas Ward has just put on a huge burst of spead and now is in the

Of course, if we wanted to be totally authentic it would be sort of
funny to include some loud, upset, ticked, off cussing at some choice
moments. Where in h*** did he come from? Oh s***, his front tire just
blew itself to h*** and back. Though, since this is a G rated game I

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Corry,
Oh, I see. Well, one thing I am still deciding upon is weather or not to
leave sound effects and voice files external from the Java package
containing the game. From a developer standpoint it is better that all
images, sound effects, etc are packed in the jar file for maximum
performance and speed on the host so. It also is a good platform
independent way of redistributing files on different operating systems
with completely different file systems. Naturally, the Windows NTFS file
system operates different from a typical Linux Ext3 file system, and
there is different issues with file permissions, directory trees, etc.
For example, on a typical Windows install of a Java app if the sounds
were externally placed in the games directory they would be on a path like
c:\Program Files\USA Games\MOTA\Sounds
On a typical Linux install the same sounds would be on a path like
/usr/usagames/mota/sounds/
which isn't very compatible with each other. So packing the sounds
directly into the jar only requires the sound class to look locally in
the package for whatever it needs instead of externally somewhere else.
Another sticky and tricky issue is file permissions. The way that
Windows handles file permissions and the way Linux handles them is like
daylight and dark.
For example, typically before you can handle or work with files under
Linux you need to set some default user permissions on a file. In Linux
there are actually three sets of file permissions one for user, group,
and other. Depending on how the flags are set on the file for its
default file access flags you may or may not be able to open the sound
files externally. Which can be a hassle when you don't exactly know how
someone has there users and groups configured.
However, this is not to say this is an impossible situation. Any
installation package such as dpkg or rpm when compiled should have some
lines in the makefile setting the default flags for the game sound
effects insuring compatibility with game x.
However, all I am saying by this example is that if the files are
included in the jar file the issues over file permissions is not one a
developer has to worry about.
If an end user is going to mod a game he or she will have to be careful
to set the default flags on the sound effects correctly before dropping
the files into the sounds directory.
If someone has a jar explorer tool like izarc he or she can just remove
and add files to the jar, save the new jar file, without altering the
manifest file and worrying about end user permissions.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tyler,
Yes, it would be possible, but I never include any fowl language in my
games beeped out or not. I try to make most of my games E rated.
However, that isn't to say I haven't thought about some Teen rated or
Mature rated games.
A couple of months ago there was a discussion about possibly some day,
obviously not now, taking on a more true doom clone. Doom would
definitely fall in the Teen rated games with all the killing, violence,
and horror type theme. Though, I am still uncertain if a true Doom
knock-off would sell since there is already Shades Of Doom which has the
basic sort of concept.
Another game in the Teen or Mature category I have pondered for the
future is an accessible knock-off of Resident Evil. In all the game
seams fairly easy to create since the first game takes place in a
shopping mall and those kinds of effects can easily be gotten from
recording blaring rock music for the music store, toys for the toy
store, cooking food for the food court, trailers playing for the
theater, and escalator sound effects are no big deal to get hold of aether.
One of the boss monsters in Resident Evil, a killer clown with a
chainsaw, shouldn't exactly be to hard to create. Get something with a
dark clown laugh, a chainsaw, and there you go.
However, rating games in our acessible games market is a bit difficult.
While Resident Evil has a mature label for sighted gamers the rating is
there do to the extreme graphics and mature content like partly nude
zombies and the fight seens can be gory I am told. Which gory sightes
and mature half nude creatures don't apply to us. Just the application
of violence.

 Hi Tyler,
Well, you can't actually create your own stock car, but Raceway will
allow you to select the type of stock car from a list of options. For
example, you will be prompted when starting a new season if you want to
have a Chevy, Dodge, Ford, or Toyoda stock car. Beyond that I haven't
actually come up with more customization between those, but perhaps some
Nascar fans out there can help shake out some more specifics on the
 available stock cars.
There is still going to be a list of sponsors, but if i use pre-recorded
speech you will only have the stock list to choose from. You won't be
able to add new sponsors to the list which may or may not be a big deal
 with some folks.

 Hi,
Right. And you can bet your best horse that Raceway isn't going open
source. I think it is going to be a great title for USA Games, and with
the work and money involved in bringing it to market open source is not
 even an option.
At worst I will dig someone up to record the game announcements, menus,
etc and let everyone play it on their Mac, Windows PC, or Linux system
or use a recorded TTS engine.

 Alex K wrote:

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Geremy and all,
Wow! quite a few questions. Here goes.

Quote
Are you going to be able to change tires in the pits?
End quote

Yes, you will. In fact, you will have to change tires at some point in
every race else the ware on the tires will cause them to blow, and that
isn't a good idea when you are going 215 MPH down the strait away. Grin

Quote
and have your pit crew talk to you while your racing to tell you who is
coming up on your
right/left /what ever?
End quote

I am certainly hoping to have something like that. For the Alpha
versions I will probably just have a Sapi type voice announce
information such as this, but eventually I want to migrate it to a more
realistic Nascar type setup with a pit crew telling you that car 36 is
coming up on your left and looks as though it is setting up for a pass.
Then, you would of course move slightly left on the track to block his
attempt to pass you.

Quote
What about speeding out of the
pits? in nascar you can get penalized for speeding into and out of the pits.
End quote

Yes, the same applies to USA Raceway. There will be a warning to slow
down when approaching or leaving pit row.

Quote
and what about the start of the race, are you going to have those magic
words,
*gentlemen, start your ingins*
End quote

Of course, it wouldn't be Nascar without them. Smile

Quote
and the different flags, the cossion flag for recks, or the red flag for
track cleanup from a huge accident or due to bad weather, and the checkard
flag for the winner?
End quote

Yes, the flags are all there. The game will announce when the flag
changes color, and you have to take some action such as stop, slow down,
etc.

Quote
and will there be a crowd cheering you on, and different weather
condissions?
End quote

Yes, every time you pass the grand stands you will hear the croud
cheering you on. As for weather conditions I have gotten a bunch of high
quality weather effects for USA Raceway but I haven't actually
incorperated weather into the game yet. I am more interested for the
first few releases in just getting the game operational.

Quote
one last thing, will we be able to race one another over the net, like
during a season, and still get points during the season like they do during
the real nascar?
End quote

At the moment I am not planning on a online multiplayer version of
Raceway. Though, Java certainly has the ability to do so. I just feel
that is something that can be considered in a later release such as 2.0
or something.
As for points Raceway uses the exact same scoring system as Nascar. You
will earn 180 points for winning the race, 5 points for leading at least
one lap, and earn 5 points for the most laps. The other drivers will
earn points on a descending scale based on race position.

Quote
and will there be poles for having the fastist lap time
during tryouts before the race?
End quote

Again this is something I am planning on doing at some point. Not all of
the features are going to appear in the first Beta release just because
there is loads and loads and loads of work to do on this game. However,
I have every intention on making this game as Nascar-like as possible
and it may take a couple of years before it really becomes as good as a
Nascar Thunder type game.

Of course, it wouldn't be Nascar without them. Smile

and the different flags, the cossion flag for recks, or the red flag for
track cleanup from a huge accident or due to bad weather, and the checkard
 flag for the winner?

Yes, the flags are all there. The game will announce when the flag
changes color, and you have to take some action such as stop, slow down,
 etc.

 Quote
and will there be a crowd cheering you on, and different weather
 condissions?
 End quote

Yes, every time you pass the grand stands you will hear the croud
cheering you on. As for weather conditions I have gotten a bunch of high
quality weather effects for USA Raceway but I haven't actually
incorperated weather into the game yet. I am more interested for the
first few releases in just getting the game operational.

 Quote
one last thing, will we be able to race one another over the net, like
during a season, and still get points during the season like they do
 during
 the real nascar?

 Hi Cara,
As far as Raceway goes there are definitly work arounds about what
speech system to use, but each has an advantage/disadvantage. If I
want to completely port Raceway as is from C# .NET to Java there is a
commercial Sapi package, JSapi, put out by Cloud Garden that supports
all the usual Sapi engines like the Scansoft voices, Neospeech voices,
etc. The problem is that it isn't licensed very cheaply, and by using
the JSapi package from Cloud Garden I have to tie Raceway specificly
to the Windows os which defeats the purpose of a multiplatform game.
There is the option of FreeTTS. FreeTTS is a TTS engine written in
pure Java, for Java applications, but isn't exactly very high quality.
The final option is to prerecord the speech. Prerecording all the
voice files using a high quality synth or a human is the best way to
make the game pplatform independant. However, with prerecorded speech
there is less possibility of making the game customisable.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Josh,
Well, not exactly. Using Java to wrap software not in the native
language is still a bit of a pain for me, and ESpeak does have a
different type of license. ESpeak is licensed as open source which
probably prevents it as being shipped with a commercial product, but I'd
have to check on its specific open source license agreement. Each open
source license is a tad bit different.

Hi,

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tyler,
Well, you can't actually create your own stock car, but Raceway will
allow you to select the type of stock car from a list of options. For
example, you will be prompted when starting a new season if you want to
have a Chevy, Dodge, Ford, or Toyoda stock car.

Re: [Audyssey] Raceway was USA game web site?

2008-03-03 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Geremy,
Like
Thomas Ward has just put on a huge burst of spead and now is in the
lead. Geremy Gilley is now in second place. Ron is still trailing the
pack, and needs 5 more laps to complete this race.
Of course, if we wanted to be totally authentic it would be sort of
funny to include some loud, upset, ticked, off cussing at some choice
moments. Where in h*** did he come from? Oh s***, his front tire just
blew itself to h*** and back. Though, since this is a G rated game I
won't have any of that, but it would be funny.
