g_b How would this case be handled in India
Ashok, Aditya, Vikram, Asfan - As a graduate of The Gunnery School in Washington, CT, USA...forty years ago...I have been watching the development of this case over the last week...and have been trying to understand how a case of homosexual pedophilia against a teacher would be pursued in India.. In the USA...this case was kept under cover for two months to allow the police to properly investigate the allegations...at the time that the police had developed sufficient corroborating evidence from other students...the charges were laid against the teacher and he was arraigned before the court...he paid $750,000.00 ( 3.75 crores) as bail and had to turn in his passport...some reports indicate that if convicted he could spend anywhere from 3 to 60 years in prison.. In the USA the teacher is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty...so many of the case details have been sealed from public viewing...both to protect the teacher and the students...and to permit the police to further investigate the teacher, about 4500 students he had contact with over the past 15 years, and the teacher's friends and acquaintances.. Needless to say...even if this man is proven innocent...it will very hard for him to ever find work dealing with children again.. What do you imagine would happen with this case here in India?? See story and/or link below.. The investigation is ongoing, Assistant State's Attorney Terri Sonnemann said Wednesday. Mr. Reinhardt, 45, was reshy;leased from state custody after posting a total of $750,000 bonds in three cases. He traveled from his home in Telford, Pa., where he has been living with a sister for the last two months, to surrender at the state police barracks in Litchfield at 6:09 a.m. that day. He intends to plead not guilty, Mr. Reinhardt's attorney, William Dow, said. We've had some preliminary investigation, and it appears there is a valid defense of the charges and we intend to pursue that. Mr. Reinhardt, who is also represented by attorney Mark Rembish, is scheduled to appear in Litchfield Superior Court Sept. 1. Judge Charles D. Gill sealed the arrest warrants in the three cases. All of the five criminal charges depict incidents that occurred in Washington, where the prestigious private boarding school is located. According to the charging documents, the state alleges that Mr. Reinhardt had sex with a student under 16 years of age on divers dates from April 2007 until June 2008, committing the crime of second-degree sexual assault. In a second case, the state alleges Mr. Reinhardt had sex with another student under the age of 16 between October 2007 and May 2009, charging him with second-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor. The third case alleges Mr. Reinhardt committed fourth-degree sexual assault and risk of injury to a minor, by having sexual contact with a minor June 2, 2009. The State Police, which is continuing its investigation, stated that it initiated a criminal investigation in June after the parents of the student in the third case filed a complaint. The Washington resident state trooper began the investigation, which led to two more students coming forward and the issuance of three arrest warrants. The allegations demonstrate a complete abuse of power, Ms. Sonnemann said. Judge Gill ordered Mr. Reinhardt to surrender his passport and to stay away from students at The Gunnery. No general conditions were ordered about having contact with minors. Mr. Reinhardt, who was employed by the school for 13 years, as a chemistry teacher and crew coach, lived on the 220-acre Gunnery campus in a dormitory where he served as a dorm parent. His place was a hangout for kids, Attorney Susan K. Smith said. She represents one of the three complainants that reportedly came forward. Attorney Richard Kenny represents two others, she said. Private schools are fertile ground for pedophiles because children live on campus and have less contact with their parents, Ms. Smith said. We see predator

But this does not take away from the fact that this 'Action Framework' is supposed to be a document created as a result of Resolution 7.2(2) of UNAIDS PCB taken in their meeting in April 2008, which had mandated to create a 'GENDER GUIDELINE' for MSM/TG (And not action framework on Universal access). While welcoming this resolution and the framework, I Again call on UNAIDS and UNDP to respect its mandate and: 1] Create an appropriate gender guidelines that is relevant to MSM/TG needs and wants. 2] Invest due resources commensurate with the needs of community consultations in a manner similar to the investments that they made while creating the gender guidelines for Women and Girls that also came about via that very same PCB resolution 7.2(2). 3] Involve the community meaningfully in consultations while creating the document on Gender Guidelines and not just a handful of supposed experts whose views may not always be reflective of the true needs and wants of the MSM/TG community. This represents an exciting step forward for the ECOSOC, which in the past has refused to acknowledge the specific needs of MSM and other marginalised communities (an approach described by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan as like putting your head in the sand.) The very preliminary results of the first step of this project have revealed a total of 204 cases of reported murders of trans people world wide in the last 1 1/2 years. 121 cases of murdered trans people have been reported in 2008. From January to June 2009 already 83 cases of murdered trans people have been reported. Furthermore, the preliminary results show an increase in the number of reports of murdered trans people over the last years. Since the beginning of 2008 the murder of a trans person is reported every third day, on average. The cases have been reported from all six World regions: North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The majority of cases have been reported from Latin America and North America. On these continents the majority of cases have been reported from Brazil (59) and the U.S.A. (16) for 2008 and from Brazil (23), Venezuela (20), and Guatemala (10) for the first six months of 2009. Moreover, the preliminary results show a total of 11 murdered trans people reported for Colombia followed by 5 for Honduras and 4 for Mexico and Venezuela for 2008, and 6 for Mexico and 3 for Argentina, and the Dominican Republic for the first six months of 2009. In total 91 murders of trans people were reported in 11 Latin American countries in 2008, and 73 murders of trans people in 11 Latin American countries in the first six months of 2009. The reported murders of trans people in Latin America account for 75% and 88% of the world wide reported murders of trans people in 2008 and the first six months of 2009 respectively. In The preliminary results also reveal that murders of trans people have been reported in 5 European countries in 2008 (Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey) and in 4 European countries (Russia, Serbia, Spain, Turkey) in the first six months of 2009. In Asia murders of trans people were reported for Iraq, Malaysia, and Singapore in 2008, and for India in the first six months of 2009. In Oceania murders of trans people were reported for Australia in 2008, and for New Zealand in the first six months of 2009. In total the preliminary results show reports of murdered trans people in 22 countries in 2008, and in 17 countries in the first six months of 2009. The preliminary results furthermore reveal some terrifying details on the nature of these crimes. The data shows that in 2008 six of the victims were minors and in the first six months of 2009 three minors were among the victims. One of these minors, 15 year-old Leticia King from Oxnard (USA), was shot twice in the head by a classmate in front of the whole class. Apart from these brutal murders, 5 of the reported murdered trans persons in 2008 were found tortured or dismembered, 2 were shot by retired policemen, and 3 were executed in police stations. 5 of the reported murdered trans persons were found tortured or dismembered

India Standard Time, modera...@gaybombay.in writes: (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/) (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/articleshow/msid-4723834,prtpage-1.cms) Why HIV patients are vulnerable to TB 1 Jul 2009, 1236 hrs IST, ANI Ending one of the biggest mysteries, Harvard scientists have found out why HIV patients are more susceptible to tuberculosis (TB) infection. In their study paper, a team of researchers led by Dr. Naimish Patel have described how HIV switches off the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The researchers have detailed how HIV interferes with the cellular and molecular mechanisms used by the lungs to fight TB infection. With this discovery, the researchers have taken an important first step toward the development of new treatments to help people with HIV to prevent or recover from TB infection. HIV/TB co-infection is a critical global health problem, especially in developing countries. We hope that these findings will lead to further studies and possible new therapies for treating or preventing tuberculosis in HIV disease, said Patel. For their study, the researchers extracted immune cells called alveolar macrophages from the lungs of otherwise healthy, asymptomatic HIV-positive patients as well as from people who did not have HIV. In people who are HIV-positive, the macrophages have a decreased response to the TB bacterium when compared to people who did not have HIV. To know why this happens, the scientists examined lung specimens from the HIV-positive patients, and found increased levels of a molecule called IL-10. IL-10 elevated the amount of a protein called BCL-3 in alveolar macrophages, which in turn reduced their ability to ward off TB infection. HIV and TB represent two of the most significant health challenges in human history and the combination of the two infections is particularly devastating because HIV dramatically increases the severity of TB infection, said Dr. John Wherry, Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, He added: There are still many unknowns about how HIV reduces the ability of the body to combat other infections. This study sheds light on co-infection with HIV and TB, which up to this point, has perplexed scientists and physicians alike. The study has been published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. Re: g_b Forbes: How Bill Gates Blew $258 million in India's HIV Corridor
After almost 5 years in India...I can vouch for much in this report.. The vast majority of externally funded HIV and sexual minority NGOs...whose books I have reviewed are frauds...a fact that any small time accountant could easily identify...and a fact well known by Indians...rich and poor, alike.. Additionally...many of these NGOs tend to be run by individuals...from the educated middle and upper classes and pseudo-communists...i.e. people who tend to be naturally attracted to the income streams...generated by the suffering of the poor and uneducated Indian.. I feel bad that the Gates Foundation...has found itself in such as situation.. But it might have been better to try to break the paradigm of suffering in India...than to expect riches to be used wisely or to end up in the right hands...without such a change.. Far more powerful systems than the Gates Foundation's Avahan have met their matches in India...the Moghuls, the Maharajas, the British.. What can I say.. But the software mogul’s charity for HIV prevention in India has failed to make a lasting impact by Elizabeth Flock | Jun 5, 2009 O n a humid afternoon, former sex worker Fathima (name changed) welcomes a group of illiterate women — still in the trade and needing protection from HIV — into the Mukta clinic in Pune. As a “peer educator,” it’s her job to convey to them the message of safety. But the visitors shuffle tentatively as expensive-looking posters in English paper the walls around them. Why would a clinic serving illiterate visitors use more English than Indian languages? The answer lies in where that money comes from. The Pune clinic is part of a network one hundred-plus non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working under the umbrella of Avahan, India’s largest HIV prevention initiative. Avahan, or “call to action,” is a brain child of the world’s largest philanthropist: Bill Gates. Gates had announced the 10-year, $100-million initiative to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in India during his much heralded visit to the country in November 2002. This was to be the largest of its kind for the Bill Melinda Gates Foundation. The timing couldn’t have been more appropriate. After nearly two decades of piecemeal efforts to counter HIV, India was hurtling towards an AIDS epidemic. Millions of poor people exposed themselves to the dreaded virus due to a lack of awareness. Government agencies and NGOs didn’t have the money to preach safety or treat the infected. Gates showed his seriousness by later raising the budget to $258 million. Seven years later, back at the Pune clinic, Fathima has counselled the women, given them the sheaths of safety and sent them back. It is time to worry about the future. The bad news is Avahan is ready to pack and go; and Fathima is set to lose her income. She doesn’t want to slip back into prostitution. At the age of 45, she doesn’t have much of a career there anyway. When it started on the ground in 2003, Avahan set for itself three goals: Arrest the spread of HIV/AIDS in India, expand the programme from the initial six states to across the nation, and develop a model that the government can adopt and sustain so that the project could be passed on to it. More than five years later, Avahan hasn’t achieved any of these goals. Doubtless, the initiative has made a dent into the HIV/AIDS problem, but the impact is marginal for a bill of $258 million. And now Avahan is leaving, handing over the reins to the government-run National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), which doesn’t want to inherit it. It is too expensive for the budget-starved establishment that is as nimble as a sloth. If NACO takes over, it will try to prune the costs of the programme. Salaries for peer educators will go. A Five-Star Initiative When Gates Foundation got down to work in India, the priority was clear. It decided to hire the best minds in business to run its initiatives using sound principles of management. Avahan was ready to spend what it takes to get the best bosses and started its search at McKinsey, the consulting powerhouse. The recruiters zeroed in on Ashok Alexander, who had spent 17 years turning Indian businesses into global challengers. “They made me an offer I couldn’t refuse,” Alexander recalls, sitting at his plush office in New Delhi. “I liked the ambitious arch of the HIV/AIDS programme and it was a chance for me to do something new.” Soon, the 15-member team was in place. Ten of them had come from a

The convictions were the culmination of an 18-month international police operation codenamed Algebra, which has identified a further 70 suspects in 16 regions of Britain and led to action against another 35 suspected child abusers. Police and the prosecution hailed the verdicts as an important advance in the fight against child sexual abuse. For the first time in Scottish legal history the Crown brought a case of conspiracy to participate in the commission of sexual offences. Advocate Depute Dorothy Bain, QC, asked for a full risk assessment for two members of the gang; Neil Strachan, who has previous convictions for child abuse, and James Rennie, a respected youth leader and gay rights campaigner who met Mr Blair and the Queen in the course of his work. The move would allow the court to impose an order for lifelong restriction, which would enable a judge to set a minimum sentence, and the men would be freed only when the parole board considered they were no longer a risk to the public. Lord Bannatyne, the judge, described the gang’s crimes as “utterly horrific”. The seven men and seven women of the jury sat through nine weeks of evidence, which presented a selection from a total of 125,000 still and video images shared among the eight men on trial, and a log of internet chatroom conversations revealing the extent to which child-sex abuse had engulfed their lives, These digital records detailed how Strachan and Rennie were able to breach relationships of trust formed with friends, procure and abuse their children, then invite their paedophile circle to assault the children too. Detective Inspector Stuart Hood, who led Operation Algebra, said that this breach of trust had been horrific and hugely significant, illustrating the plausibility which these serial sex offenders brought to their apparently normal lives. Rennie was able to abuse the three-month-Rennie was able to abuse the three-month-WBRold baby of close friends without them suspecting him. He gave the child presents, was allowed to change its nappies and babysat for the couple. It was only when police arrived with images of abuse that the couple In a statement issued last night the couple said: “For 15 years James Rennie seemed the closest of family friends, and . . . it would be fair to state that he was with us, appearing to give friendship and support, during the most difficult and vulnerable times in our lives. To subsequently learn that he abused our son, and invited others to do the same, has been devastating. As a family we have had to learn to live, and cope with, the effect these horrific events have had.” The parents of two children attacked by Strachan faced further heartache. Strachan is HIV positive and the children had to be tested for the virus. “The anguish I feel towards Mr Strachan is indescribable,” said the boys’ mother. “I feel that no matter what punishment given to Mr Strachan it will never be able to compensate for the hurt, devastation and great deal of stress brought to me and my family.” Detective Superintendent Allan Jones, of Lothian Borders Police, said that the case was one of the most challenging to be investigated by the force and “represented the largest paedophile network dismantled in Scotland”. “As the investigation unfolded it revealed a web of people who had a common interest in child sexual abuse. They made initial contact via the internet and used it to share vile imagery and discuss the abuse of children,” he said. He said of the abusers: “All led classic double lives.

Diane Schroer of Alexandria, Va., applied for the terrorism analyst job while she was still a man named David Schroer. He was offered the job, but the offer was pulled after he told a library official that he was having surgery to change his gender. U.S. District Judge James Robinson ruled Tuesday that Schroer was entitled to $491,190 in back pay and damages because of sex discrimination. The Library of Congress and the Justice Department argued unsuccessfully that discrimination because of transsexuality was not illegal sex discrimination under the Civil Rights Act. The American Civil Liberties Union had argued the case on Schroer's behalf. Paul Cates with the ACLU's Lesbian and Gay Rights Project said the ruling was significant because a federal judge said that discriminating against someone for changing genders is sex discrimination under federal law. Schroer is a former U.S. Army colonel who directed a classified group that tracked and targeted terrorists. Schroer retired in 2004 and worked briefly in the private sector before applying for the Congressional Research Service job at the Library of Congress. After being offered the job, Schroer had lunch with a Library of Congress official and explained the upcoming surgery. Schroer testified the official called the next day and said the position would not be a good fit. little prince-Sanjay N Lulla **Access 350+ FREE radio stations anytime from anywhere on the web. India - Eunuchs avoid polls over 'third sex' dilemma NineMSN Sun, 19 Apr 2009 13:24 UTC ? India's one million eunuchs face a unique dilemma every election season - do they stand in the men's or women's queue at polling stations or stay away altogether? In the past, eunuchs - the term used for cross-dressers, pre- and post-operative transsexuals known here as hijras - have largely abstained from casting their ballots because they are unwilling to identify themselves as male or female on voter registration forms. While some eunuchs do vote by listing themselves as female, many are pushing for an alternative or third sex option on identity cards, after being granted the franchise in 1994. Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a prominent eunuch activist and founder of NGO Astitva, which works with sexual minorities, has never voted and refuses to do so until there is a transgender option on identity cards. It's the question of the identity of our whole community, she said. In spite of so many years of independence we haven't got our own identity, our own place in the constitution of India. Most eunuchs live on the outer fringes of society, ostracized and excluded from decent job opportunities and reduced to begging at traffic junctions in major cities or working in the sex trade. Despite the stigma surrounding them, a campaign to recognise eunuchs as a third sex has yielded some results. They can now write E for eunuch on passports and on certain government forms, but the quest for acceptance at the ballot box - where they have to identify themselves as male or female - still eludes them in culturally conservative India. There has been quite a bit of progress so structurally the only thing that comes in is gender politics, said Ashok Row Kavi, chairman of the Humsafar Trust, a male sexual health NGO. Eunuchs who want to contest in elections for greater rights have come up against similar problems, even though several have been elected to public office as women. Last month India's election commission denied three eunuchs in the eastern state of Orissa permission to run as candidates unless they identified themselves as male or female. Pratap Sahu, president of the All-Orissa Eunuchs Association, which fielded the candidates, said the unsuccessful bid had been a form of protest against election authorities. We wanted to fight the election on the third sex issue. In India nobody has fought for this, he said. The relatively small number of eunuchs, compared to other minority groups, means it is unlikely that any party deems them a priority vote bank, said Anil Bairwal, national coordinator for the Association of Democratic Reforms. Whether it will be taken up or not - as far as our political parties are concerned, the only language they understand is the language of numbers, he said. Month-long general elections in the world's largest democracy began on Thursday, with the last of five phases taking place on May 13. Results are expected May 16. Agency France-Presse ? ? ? ? g_b TUESDAE -Gay Calif and 377
In light of Obama's resounding mandate for faith and hope through out not just the United States but the world at large.. It is worth reflecting on the failure of the gay marriage referendum...in a state that gave an incredible victory to the ultimate outsider presidential candidate...and is a married man who unabashedly supports gay rights, as well.. How did gay marriage slip off the plate??...and is it possible that the current drivers of the 377 challenge might be steering gay rights off an abyss in India, as well?? Elizabeth .. Lawsuits to challenge California gay marriage ban 6 hours ago LOS ANGELES (AFP) — California's vote to ban same-sex marriages in a referendum will be contested by activists and city officials who have lodged multiple legal challenges to the ballot, officials said Thursday. In a stunning result, voters approved a proposal added to ballot papers in Tuesday's presidential election which amended the state constitution to say that only marriages between men and women are recognized in California. Voters approved the constitutional amendment by a margin of 52.5 to 47.5 percent, according to near-complete results. The decision came only six months after California's Supreme Court overturned a previous ban on same-sex marriage, paving the way for thousands of gay and lesbian couples to tie the knot in the state. However opponents of same-sex marriage successfully gathered enough support for an amendment to be added to the November 4 election which sought to override the California Supreme Court decision. Now activists and city officials in Los Angeles and San Francisco are vowing to return to the California Supreme Court, arguing that the vote -- known as Proposition 8 -- represented a sweeping revision of the constitution and was more far-reaching than a simple amendment. A major purpose of the constitution is to protect minorities from majorities, said Elizabeth Gill, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), one of the rights groups fighting the ban. Because changing that principle is a fundamental change to the organizing principles of the constitution itself, only the legislature can initiate such revisions to the constitution. Challenges have been filed by the ACLU, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and Lambda Legal while San Francisco, Los Angeles and Santa Clara have sued in a joint bid. Equal protection of the laws is not merely the cornerstone of the California Constitution, it is what separates constitutional democracy from mob rule tyranny, San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera said in a statement. Another lawsuit has been filed by Los Angeles lawyer Gloria Allred on behalf of the lesbian couple whose legal fight initially led to May's Supreme Court decision to overturn a previous ban. The legal status of thousands of same-sex couples who have wed since June remains unclear although state officials have insisted that the marriages will remain valid. The marriage ban sparked angry protests in California on Wednesday, with thousands taking to the streets in Los Angeles to condemn the ban. Angry crowds thronged the streets in central West Hollywood, the heart of Los Angeles' gay community, chanting slogans and waving signs. On Thursday hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Los Angeles Mormon Temple in the Westwood neighborhood, accusing the church of bankrolling opposition to same-sex marriage. No one's religious beliefs should be used to deny fundamental rights to others, said Lorri Jean chief of the Los Angeles Gay Lesbian Center. ``Our civil rights are inalienable. Jean accused Mormons of contributing more than 15 million dollars to fund the campaign aimed at securing passage of Tuesday's referendum. It is a travesty that the Mormon Church bought this election and used a campaign of lies and deception to manipulate voters Jean said. They're entitled to their beliefs, but not to impose them upon the constitution or laws of California. **AOL Search: Your one stop for directions, recipes and all other Holiday needs. Search Now. Dinesh...which of these types of people are you?? Elizabeth In a message dated 9/19/2008 11:30:22 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Denial of identity card for Aravanis in male attire and lives in biological family Tamilnadu Aravanis welfare board - is formed recently by the state ministry of social welfare to take care of the welfare activities of Aravanis in Tamilnadu. The first initiative of the board is to take census of Aravanis and provide identity card with sex column as Thiru-nanagi [New identity proposed by Trans-gender activists]. Also this, baseline data would help to take evidence based decisions in future activities of the board. As per the plan, the board has started to enroll the names of Aravanis in some district collector offices. Reportedly, this registration process might goes up to the end this month (September). In this process, the board seeks the help of Nayaks [Leaders of Aravanis community] to recommend/ acknowledge the persons coming for registration as Aravani. Also, the government officials who are in this process have given complete freedom to Nayaks to select or reject as they like. With this background, Susi kumar [name changed], a self-identified Aravani from the upper middle class family visited the collector office to enroll her name. During the enrollment, she was verbally abused by the Nayak for not affiliated to jamath [Association of Aravanis], not done emasculation, and not in female attire. Even though she gave many valid excuses and tried badly to prove her choice of gender identity as Thiru-nangai, all her efforts went in vain. Finally, she was rejected by the Nayak and labeled as non-Aravani. She also had to beg the government officials by showing all her female attire photographs that she had taken in private. But, the government officials were also seems to be helpless as they wanted green signal from the Nayak. Susi kumar, unlike other Aravanis, lives in family and in male attire. When she explaining the importance of the identity card for her: I live in my family. As I love my mother and family, I don't wish to leave them and join with Aravanis community. Recently, my mother, my only hope in life also passed away. My brothers often abuse me verbally and sometimes physically. My neighbors also often mimic me for my feminine mannerism. As I don't have any emotional support, they [family members] might send me out of family at any time. My brothers are very curious about my family property. This identity card would help me to seek the support of police and lawyers incase of any such issues. When the Nayak of the district was asked the reason for rejecting Susi Kumar, she raised her concern that - only those Aravanis like her who comes out of family, and live in female attire faces many issues in life but Aravanis living in family do not face such problems. She added that, if they enroll persons based on the self -identity, all males would come and get the benefits given to Aravanis. Gayathri [name changed], a Trans-gender activist also extended her voice in support of Susi kumar. According to her, the self identity of an individual should be respected without giving importance to physical attire and emasculation status etc. She said that, often this kind of lack of acceptance within the community for invisible Aravanis who lives in family forces them to choose sex reassignment surgery and come out of family. And, finally the lack of any support systems forces them in to full time sex work. Thus, sex work poses them and their clients in to HIV risk. She also added that, often kothis [this identity refers both who lives in female and male attire] face verbal abuse, violence and sexual harassment at many places out of their feminine mannerism. This kind of initiative would help them at large to take legal actions against such human rights violations. Amoka [name changed], a queer activist who work for HIV based NGOs shared her concern in this regard. In her words: Each one's individual identity should be respected. We always blame the society for stigmatizing us based on some social constructions and judgments. But, this is also the self stigma with the community. Also, no non-Aravani will misuse the opportunity as the excuse given
Re: g_b Nigah holds fest to celebrate third sex in Delh .we are all free- Aditya
Now Aditya Dear - I do not think there is probably anything wrong with what this fine person was thinking...we are all free to have our thoughts.. Either our eminent moderator has posted something out of context.. Or possibly the writer is not adept in expressing him/her/tri self in a written format.. I have all sorts of scenarios that I could layout to explain what I think someone was trying to say to others.. I will give you one of my interpretations...but of course I am sure that I am either totally wrong or partially 'in error'.. And this does not in anyway negate the fact that I am not totally in support of the ideas found in my interpretation of the jumbled prose.. My Interpretation of Nigah holds fest to celebrate third sex in Delh First off I think Nigah is in Delhi...and that it is probably an organization of middle class youth fulminating about their inabilities of gaining access to a program that provides PhDs in Marxist Philosophy.. Secondly, I do not think they are espousing hetero or homo or even traditional Indian eunuch family styles and substance...but are trying to promote a transient 'do as one pleases' TG-homo-countercultural lifestyle that has been developed in Europe and the Americas over the last 40 years.. A lifestyle that appears to be very much appreciated by many of the boys in GayBombay...but without the tag of TG attached to it...you know GB is MSM not TG...no matter what position a person may find themself in in life.. My Reservation It appears to me that for any idea to flourish it must be an integral part of a successful and strong community.. Heteros, discrete homos and almost invisible hijra/eunuchs have been stable and often very successful members of Indian society for thousands of years.. Outlandish TG-counterculturalists (third sex??? in the Nigah posting???) have always existed in small number...but very seldom except for those in transient individual styles...which unless that individual is a ruler or social leader have very little good or bad effect upon the overall social culture of Hindusthan.. We all see weirdos on the street everyday...some well educated and living at home with mom and dad...and some sleeping in their own vomit on the roadside...but generally would you say are these people mentors or meteors??.. Aditya...where are you tomorrow night??? Rupa is with me in Denver for my annual visit and we are providing a full fledged Bengali dinner to many 'Nigah'-Type TG friends at my home...ending of course with Rupa's inimitable Malpoa.. Best.. All of us trans, straight and gay do the same in our search for stability and an identity.. Sadly...your article falls into the current western misconception that we are women born into mens' bodies...an idea that was created against all scientific facts to permit psychiatrists the right to prescribe hormones and sexual reassignment surgery...the idea worked well and western TGs got access to those therapies that would help them fill their personal needs for identity in the primarily Adam and Eve structured western world...therapies that were previously illegal.. Can you imagine a 57 year old successful western professional giving up a cushy life in the US...and becoming a successful and well respected hijra.. There is a level of honesty and sanity in the thousands of years old hijra culture that the 30 year old western TS culture cannot hope to approach...at least not in my lifetime.. Thus I recommend all Indians who wish to be TGs to study in detail hijra culture...and to model themselves after the great gurus, nyaks and individuals...and then if that is not their cup of tea to emigrate to a country that more closely reflects their chosen perception of themselves... When watching this You Tube it is important to look first at the film makers and then the audience that the film maker is addressing.. These are generally middle class, well educated people suffering from all the problems associated with being at least moderately secure in their material existences and reasonably self-assured through their acquired knowledge.. It is very seldom that such people stand out from the crowd...and by their mere existence to cause their fellow humans to question the actual value of their material possessions...or to question the thought processes that have made them so irrationally secure in their misguided wisdom.. People such as Sri Aurobindo, Mohamed, Buddha,Mahavir, Marx and Jesus...have stood out and contributed to human existence not because they were mere reflections of the dominant society that surrounded them but because they were different...and by observing their difference many in the dominant society came to question the very roots of long treasured erroneous personal beliefs about life.. A gay man wakes up in the morning and goes to high school, only to realise that homosexuality is the societal norm whilst heterosexuality is frowned upon. Since he's attracted to a pretty classmate -- a girl -- he has to 'come out' all over again. Now, this movie wasn't especially good, and certainly failed to explore the issues of what is normal and abnormal in a society. But at a film festival on gender and sexuality held in the capital recently, deviant sexuality predictably took centre stage. There were many worthy films that explored issues surrounding homosexuality and queer sexuality. But the regular, average man or woman, confronting his or her sexual issues in a rather puritanical society, were given short shrift. It seems that for now, the avant-garde is 'cool'. The great Indian middle class is therefore co-opting the atypical into the mainstream, by making it hip to be 'different'. Younger people are adopting the abnormal, making it normal, and ending up alienating the majority. It's a strange world where a person has to be apologetic for being attracted to the opposite sex. Yet, that is what has happened in our excessively politically correct times. All it takes is one bleeding-heart liberal to raise an objection about perceived anti-gay remarks, and one is derided as a homophobic individual. The problem here isn't the motive behind a discussion on queer sexuality. No doubt it has more to do with removing the social stigma attached to being gay, or lesbian or transgender, than an attempt to marginalise the mainstream. But in our eagerness to atone for our supposed sins, we go too far, which creates more resentment and leads to the kind of bigotry we were ashamed of in the first place ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. inline: image001.pnginline: image001.pnginline: image002.png
g_b What I love about being Indian?
Shweta - Those are wonderful words and ideas for those in India who are computer literate and have access to western middle class culture.. But we should not forget that the majority of Indians cannot find Karnataka on a map...no less understand what a state or country means...do you need a passport to go to Kolkata...and if cricket had the money why didn't they just put Greg on a train or bus back to Australia...instead of a plane.. additionally most of these truly decent and wonderful Indian people have no faith that their government will give them equal security in their lives to the protection accorded to other castes, classes, religions and genders.. It is always good for you to count your blessings...but also good for me not to be blind to those who lack a similar fortune.. Love.. Elizabeth What I love about being Indian? Some point of views about why i love India - self findings Culture and sacrifice The thing that I love most about being Indian is living in a cultured society. I can speak my language very well without faltering. I love Indian foods, our dresses and beautiful places. I always respect and love people who sacrifice their lives and who are still struggling for the sake of India. In future, I would like to have a job in India rather than go abroad. India all the way The best thing about being an Indian is that you belong to the most colorful and beautiful country in the whole world. Every state, every city in India has a different history to tell. I also like the variety of seasons, the food, clothes and the rich culture. Indians are the most intelligent of all. An Indian will serve India in every possible way. To be an Indian is a honour. I'm proud because I am in a country where people from different castes co-exist. We manage to live together, celebrate each other's festival and respect each other. We speak many languages. There is no place like India India is a country with a rich culture and heritage. There's such a variety of food, dances and heritage sites, it is a great country. I am proud to be an Indian because I belong to a land full of warm people, great food, cool places and the Himalayas. There is no place like India. Brothers one and all In which country will you find a Muslim president, a Sikh prime minister, a Christian ruling party leader and a Hindu vice-president ruling our nation? Isn't that proof enough to show brotherhood exists in our country? What more reason can I state to be a proud Indian? Variety is the spice I love being Indian because we have such a rich culture, different customs, costumes, languages and spicy food! Aditya - While I totally share your frustration with the lack of clear descriptions for objects and personalities...I do not think the main cause of this problem lies with those outside our communities so much as it does with us ourselves.. We tend to have a multitude...if not a majority of us without...both...clear identities and clear perceptions of our identities...we ourselves can appropriately split the hairs when we see or meet one another...but for an outsider without our personal relation to the community and with a need to explain us to others...these journalists and writers are left with the same words and pictures...that even we frequently use for the purpose of deception of others both inside and outside our communities.. g_b “scrotum” does not often appea r in polite conversation
Are we as Transgendered and Gay people any more comfortable with this word... and the vast universe of ideas that this iconic word contains?? Elizabeth Children's Book Stirs Battle With Single Word By JULIE BOSMAN The New York Times (Feb. 18) -- The word “scrotum” does not often appear in polite conversation. Or children’s literature, for that matter. Librarians Shocked Yet there it is on the first page of “The Higher Power of Lucky,” by Susan Patron, this year’s winner of the Newbery Medal, the most prestigious award in children’s literature. The book’s heroine, a scrappy 10-year-old orphan named Lucky Trimble, hears the word through a hole in a wall when another character says he saw a rattlesnake bite his dog, Roy, on the scrotum. “Scrotum sounded to Lucky like something green that comes up when you have the flu and cough too much,” the book continues. “It sounded medical and secret, but also important.” The inclusion of the word has shocked some school librarians, who have pledged to ban the book from elementary schools, and reopened the debate over what constitutes acceptable content in children’s books. The controversy was first reported by Publishers Weekly, a trade magazine. On electronic mailing lists like Librarian.net, dozens of literary blogs and pages on the social-networking site LiveJournal, teachers, authors and school librarians took sides over the book. Librarians from all over the country, including Missoula, Mont.; upstate New York; Central Pennsylvania; and Portland, Ore., weighed in, questioning the role of the librarian when selecting — or censoring, some argued — literature for children. “This book included what I call a Howard Stern-type shock treatment just to see how far they could push the envelope, but they didn’t have the children in mind,” Dana Nilsson, a teacher and librarian in Durango, Colo., wrote on LM_Net, a mailing list that reaches more than 16,000 school librarians. “How very sad.” The book has already been banned from school libraries in a handful of states in the South, the West and the Northeast, and librarians in other schools have indicated in the online debate that they may well follow suit. Indeed, the topic has dominated the discussion among librarians since the book was shipped to schools. Pat Scales, a former chairwoman of the Newbery Award committee, said that declining to stock the book in libraries was nothing short of censorship. “The people who are reacting to that word are not reading the book as a whole,” she said. “That’s what censors do — they pick out words and don’t look at the total merit of the book.” If it were any other novel, it probably would have gone unnoticed, unordered and unread. But in the world of children’s books, winning a Newbery is the rough equivalent of being selected as an Oprah’s Book Club title. Libraries and bookstores routinely order two or more copies of each year’s winners, with the books read aloud to children and taught in classrooms. “The Higher Power of Lucky” was first published in November by Atheneum/Richard Jackson Books, an imprint of Simon Schuster, accompanied by a modest print run of 10,000. After the announcement of the Newbery on Jan. 22, the publisher quickly ordered another 100,000 copies, which arrived in bookstores, schools and libraries around Feb. 5. Reached at her home in Los Angeles, Ms. Patron said she was stunned by the objections. The story of the rattlesnake bite, she said, was based on a true incident involving a friend’s dog. And one of the themes of the book is that Lucky is preparing herself to be a grown-up, Ms. Patron said. Learning about language and body parts, then, is very important to her. “The word is just so delicious,” Ms. Patron said. “The sound of the word to Lucky is so evocative. It’s one of those words that’s so interesting because of the sound of the word.” Ms. Patron, who is a public librarian in Los Angeles, said the book was written for children 9 to 12 years old. But some librarians countered that since the heroine of “The Higher Power of Lucky” is 10, children older than that would not be interested in reading it. “I think it’s a good case of an author not realizing her audience,” said Frederick Muller, a librarian at Halsted Middle School in Newton, N.J. “If I were a third- or fourth-grade teacher, I wouldn’t want to have to explain that.” Authors of children’s books sometimes sneak in a single touchy word or paragraph, leaving librarians to choose whether to ban an entire book over one offending phrase. In the case of “Lucky,” some of them take no chances. Wendy Stoll, a librarian at Smyrna Elementary in Louisville, Ky., wrote on the LM_Net mailing list that she would not stock the book. Andrea Koch, the librarian at French Road Elementary School in Brighton, N.Y., said she
g_b Michael Jackson Talks About His New Life in Vegas and His Comeback
In a World Exclusive Interview, Michael Jackson Talks About His New Life in Vegas and His Comeback Posted Feb 5th 2007 7:06PM by _Robin Leach_ (http://www.vegaspopular.com/bloggers/robin-leach) Michael Jackson's long-awaited return to 'King of Pop' status has begun and it's being masterminded by the mysterious, secretive British entertainment tycoon who is behind the phenomenal success of Simon Cowell's ratings juggernaut 'American Idol' and David Beckham's $250-mega-million deal that is bringing the soccer king to the United States. I can exclusively reveal that megastar producer-manager, Simon Fuller, has held top-secret strategy planning meetings in Vegas with Michael and Emmy award-winning director-choreographer, Kenny Ortega, who has created two of Michael's previous smash, sell-out world tours. By the way, Kenny won his first Director's Guild of America award on Sunday for outstanding achievement with his 'High School Musical' production for Disney. They invited me to join their dinner in a private room behind the watchful eyes of 2 security guards at Steve Wynn's _Wing Lei_ (http://search.cityguide.aol.com/lasvegas/restaurants/wing-lei/v-281905) Chinese restaurant at the mogul's _Wynn resort hotel and casino._ (http://search.cityguide.aol.com/lasvegas/entertainment/wynn-las-vegas/v-190918) It's Michael's fourth visit to the Epicurean Award-winning restaurant since moving to Vegas, ending his 18-month self-imposed exile from the US, living in Dubai and at Michael Flatley's castle in Ireland. Ironically, Michael who normally shuns cameras, was undetected just 100 feet away from the 200-strong media mob reporting on Paula Abdul's _'Woman of the Year'_ (http://www.vegaspopular.com/2007/01/28/hey-paula-paula-abdul-talks-slurs-idol-simon-as-borat-and/) award and star-studded attendees. A bit later when I told Simon Cowell, who was also in Vegas for Paula's award, that his partner was just around the corner, he laughed and said, Doing another one of his world-shaking mega-deals, I suppose. As manager to international soccer-star David Beckham, Fuller, the extraordinary deal-maker, won him a five year $250-million contract -- the largest sports pay-package in history – to move with his 'Posh Spice' wife, Victoria Beckham, to Beverly Hills and play for the L.A. Galaxy Major League Soccer team. Incidentally that was Beckham, with Martha Stewart and LL Cool J, in one of the high-priced $2.5 million _Superbowl ads_ (http://www.ifilm.com/video/2819646/collection/18373/minisite/superbowl) on Sunday -- another coup for Simon Fuller launching Beckham's bid for American stardom. Michael, who was looking well, relaxed and very happy told me, I'm doing fine and am well and really enjoying myself in Vegas. It's a great place to call home. His handshake and voice were strong and firm. On Michael's pending Vegas show and return to pop royalty, Kenny added, We're talking business and looking at lots of different possibilities. This is a blue-sky time with a lot of different scenarios up in the air. We're working through all of them to find the best – the one that makes the most sense that's good for everybody. I was reliably told that if anybody could transform Michael into a box-office megastar all over again, it would be entertainment mogul Simon Fuller, This is the perfect match: the world's biggest pop-star being looked after by the most successful mogul-manager in the world. Fuller is often confused with Simon Cowell -- particularly as they are close friends and so intertwined with 'American Idol's' non-stop soaring success including #1 ratings in 21 different countries. Fuller though, is the brains behind its $1-billion haul from advertising, merchandise and music. He is said to have earned $60-million personally in 2003 alone and that's a figure that grows annually. In addition, he promotes and manages such 'American Idol' stars as Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken in addition to being the longtime manager of Annie Lennox and the now solo careers of Emma 'Baby Spice' Bunton and Mrs. Beckham. There's an incredibly unique tie-in with another Vegas connection for Michael. Fuller (seen here with Kenny and Michael) divides his time between London, Los Angeles, and the French Riviera, and is also said to have numerous growing investments in Lake Las Vegas real estate ventures with Cowell. But it's the megadeal he struck with American billionaire, Robert F X Sillerman, that's worth noting in all of this. Fuller's 19 Entertainment was purchased a year ago by Sillerman for a whopping $190 million and Fuller wound up a director of Sillerman's CKx and still running the 19 group. CKx is partnered with _Cirque du Soleil_ (http://vegas.aol.com/galleries/cirque-du-soleil) in an upcoming Elvis Presley-themed show, planned for MGM's City Center. Sillerman, who owns

Hardaway Displays Honesty and Stupidity Homophobia Not Shocking, But Hate Hits Low Point By JASON WHITLOCK AOL Sports Commentary At first, Tim Hardaway's stupidity provoked a chuckle. He couldn't be serious. Not in these politically correct times. His remarks on Dan LeBatard's radio show in Miami had to be some sort of elaborate skit to promote John Amaechi's book. Controversial Company Asked to comment on the former NBA role player's decision to announce that he's gay, Hardaway decided to be John Rocker honest. If he was on my team, Hardaway said, speaking of Amaechi, I would, you know, really distance myself from him because, uh, I don't think that's right. And you know I don't think he should be in the locker room while we're in the locker room. I wouldn't even be a part of that. That was just Hardaway's warm-up shot. With LeBatard trying to press the brakes on Hardaway's intolerance, Hardaway executed a backdoor cut and slammed home his ignorance. You know, I hate gay people, so I let it be known, added Hardaway, a retired NBA all-star. I don't like gay people and I don't like to be around gay people. I am homophobic. I don't like it. It shouldn't be in the world or in the United States. Thirty minutes after the interview, Hardaway began his backpedal, offering an apology on a Miami TV station. Too late. The controversy was already in the process of blowing up nationally. NBA commissioner David Stern promptly removed Hardaway from all NBA All-Star Weekend activity in Las Vegas. And LeBatard was on the horn with Amaechi getting his reaction to Hardaway's comments for a column in Thursday's Miami Herald. Finally, someone who is honest, Amaechi told LeBatard. It is ridiculous, absurb, petty, bigoted and shows a lack of empathy that is gargantuan and unfathomable. But it is honest. And it illustrates the problem better than any of the fuzzy language other people have used so far. Yep, Hardaway scored points for honesty and stupidity. While perfectly illustrating the kind of hostility an active, out-of-the-closet athlete would face inside a locker room, Hardaway dealt the league that made him rich a black eye and a controversy that could take some of the shine off the NBA's Vegas holiday. Rather than spend the weekend talking about gambling, stripclubs, escorts and tattoos, Stern's all-stars will be forced to answer another round of questions about sexuality. Trust me, athletes are far more qualified to pontificate about the former than the latter. More than anything, that's what Amaechi's book release has made clear. We shouldn't ask pro athletes important questions. They've been raised in locker rooms, laboratories for intolerance and ignorance, and had their beliefs fortified by large sums of money and groupies/posse members. Athletes are not paid to be thoughtful or articulate. They're paid to follow instructions implicitly. They're paid to adhere to a macho code that certainly views gay men as weak. Should we be surprised that LeBron James and all the other 20-something millionaires flunked Amaechi's Brokeback test and offered less-than-enlightened opinions about homosexuality? No. And maybe we should be even less surprised that the 40-year-old Hardaway thought it was appropriate to put his homophobia on record. Money and privilege seem to erode a man's ability to empathize. Once you make it financially in this society, the natural inclination is to forget how and why you made it. Hardaway's implied reluctance to share a locker room and shower with a gay teammate is somewhat understandable. Most heterosexual men feel the same way. Homophobia is a not a crime. Letting it control your behavior is wrong. It is Hardaway's expression of hate and the implication he would allow his homophobia to prevent a gay man from working in peace that troubles me. Hardaway is too stupid to realize that racism and hate denied black people inalienable, American rights for hundreds of years. People with Tim Hardaway's mindset tried to keep people who look like Tim Hardaway out of professional sports and every other highly sought profession. 2007 America Online, Inc. g_b The King is Dead Long Live the Komodo Queen
Okay guys looks like time is about up...Komodo females are at the top by themselves...and have no natural predators...male, female, hetero or homo.. Evolution probably is saying 'male is passe... okay, let them play with themselves if they wish'.. We only need one good male for every one hundred thousand humans...one good bull for every thousand cows...and no guys at all for every Komodo girl unless of course she is in the right time and place and finds it suitable.. Instead of worrying about past and present male history it might be appropriate to analyze male and gay existence in view of a scenario that includes either planned obsolescence or at best limited genetic importance.. Hmm...'TG or not to be??' Elizabeth Updated:2006-12-20 16:38:59 Virgin Birth on Way for Komodo Dragon One of Two Such Cases Known for Animal By MARIA CHENG AP CHESTER, England (Jan. 19) - In an evolutionary twist, Flora the Komodo dragon has managed to become pregnant all on her own without any male help. She is carrying seven baby Komodo dragons. Some reptile species reproduce asexually in a process known as parthenogenesis. Talk About It: _Post Thoughts_ (http://messageboards.aol.com/aol/en_us/articles.php?boardId=567444func=3channel=News) We were blown away when we realized what she'd done, said Kevin Buley, a reptile expert at Flora's home at the Chester Zoo in this town in northern England. But we certainly won't be naming any of the hatchlings Jesus. Other reptile species reproduce asexually in a process known as parthenogenesis. But Flora's virginal conception is the second documented in a Komodo dragon. The first was earlier this year at the London Zoo. The reptiles, renowned for their intelligence, are native to Indonesia. They are the world's largest lizards and have no natural predators - making them on par with sharks and lions at the pinnacle of the animal kingdom. The cases of Flora and the London lizard, Sungai, are described in a paper published Thursday in Nature. Parthenogenesis is a process in which eggs become embryos without male fertilization. It has been seen in about 70 species, including snakes and lizards. Scientists are unsure whether female Komodo dragons have always had this latent ability to reproduce or if this is a new evolutionary development. At 8 years old, Flora - whom Buley describes as demure - is sexually mature. Having been raised in captivity, she has never been exposed to a male Komodo dragon. She lives with her younger sister, Nessie. Flora's keepers first became suspicious in May, when she laid 25 eggs. Though it's not uncommon for female dragons to lay eggs without mating, such eggs are not usually fertilized. As a precaution, they were placed in an incubator. About half of Flora's eggs looked like real eggs - they were very white and had solid shells. When three of them collapsed, scientists took a closer look. We saw blood vessels and a small embryo, said Buley, one of the Nature study's authors. And we knew immediately that Flora had fertilized the eggs herself. They then sent the collapsed eggs, along with tissue samples from Flora, Nessie, and a male Komodo dragon, to a laboratory in nearby Liverpool that conducted genetic testing to determine the eggs' parentage. Results showed that although the baby Komodo dragons are not exact Flora clones, their DNA could not have come from any other dragon. At the London Zoo, Sungai gave birth to four dragon hatchlings in April through self-fertilization. After their births, Sungai went on to mate normally with a male dragon, producing another baby dragon. Komodo dragons seem to be able to switch ways of reproducing to deal with a shortage of suitable boyfriends, said Dr. Rick Shine, a professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Sydney, Australia. Shine was not involved with the Nature paper. In contrast, other lizard species that reproduce asexually cannot mate normally. That might give Komodos a distinct survival edge. Only about 4,000 dragons remain in the wild, of which 1,000 are female. Concerns about dwindling Komodo dragon populations might be allayed by Flora and Sungai's recent self-induced motherhood. If female dragons can on occasion help out by virgin births, more power to them, said Trooper Walsh, a U.S.-based Komodo dragon expert, who was not connected to the study. Komodo dragons are the ultimate survivors, said Walsh. This is just another way this species can adapt to its surroundings. The discovery that Komodo dragons can reproduce asexually also has major implications for how they will be bred in captivity in the future. Experts are also keen to find out how prevalent virgin births are in the wild. It's baffling why a species starts doing this, said Kevin de Queiroz, a research zoologist at the Smithsonian Museum of

In the state of Wyoming for many years when we were in a similar state as the great country of India now finds itself... we instituted 'Open' admissions to solve the problem...this meant that all residents who had the equivalent of a high school education would be allowed to enter the University of Wyoming...and the continued presence in the university was based upon their grades at the university...which also had tutoring programs that assisted its eager but less forward students.. This entrance into the student body of the University of Wyoming was not based upon the 'merit' of the students...because all children in a democracy should be of equal 'merit'...but based upon the child's residency in the state of Wyoming.. In those days...which were up until only a very few years ago...many children had to workmuch of the time helping their families on farms and ranches or in the mines and forests.. Living in such conditions the vast majority of Wyoming's children lacked the benefits of education that the children of urban doctors, bankers and businessmen enjoyed.. Wyoming is known as the 'Equality' state as we were the first elected government any place in the world to give full suffrage(voting rights)to women...it was thus natural that such a state would give full access to its University to its children.. In time poor children's educational opportunities increased sufficiently to permit the 'merit' based admission system that the University of Wyoming now enjoys...though there still exists massive extra support to assist members of certain less 'forward' groups to enter the University of Wyoming.. It is foolish for Indians to think that there are not sufficient lower and backwardcaste and class and tribal students to properly fill 50% of the paltry number of seats it currently hasin its universities and professional schools.. Sadly, the problem in India...a country desperately in need of Doctors and professionals in all areas of the country...is that Indians in government and 'forward' castes, tribes and classes did not have faith that it was worthwhile to build medical and professional colleges everywhere and of sufficient capacity to educate its uneducated masses.. Iwould recommend the institution of 'open' admissions in India...with a '50%' reservation system only until sufficient institutional space has been constructed to educate India's masses...at which time the individual universities can begin to institute a meritocracy based more upon the merit of the individual university instead of the assumed deficiencies of 'merit' of most of the Indian populous.. Should I send you all pictures of TGs and potential gays in my street photos...or would it be better to leave it to your imaginations.. I have known the city since I was a student at UCB in 1969...and today I currently only know 6 men that I am certain who are definitely heterosexual.. Re: g_b Eunuchs Protest For Equal Rights In India -
Interesting article but it is more reflective of the typical GLBT misuse of the Hijara/eunuch population than about the needs and skills of the hijara/eunuch population.. The word 'eunuch' is a great kicker when people are trying to attract attention to themselves...if Tata or Kids Kemp advertised in the papers that you could ogle a hijara/eunuch by visiting their show rooms people would come just to see the oddity in real life.. Just a correction, but I would hope those of us far from Philadelphia know that 'hijara/eunuchs' are not unique to India...they flourish in Pakistan, Bangladesh and the other Hindu and Moslem states of South Asia...and 'eunuchs' exist throughout the world from the USA to Thialand...though in most cases by different names and without the wonderful inter-relations that the hijara/eunuchs have with one another here in South Asia...I was with several gatherings of Bengali and Bangladeshihijara/eunuchs over the last few weeks and you would have never known that Bengal had been tortuously torn into two isolated pieces by Britain, West Pakistan and India over the last 50 years from the closeness and common identity these people still share among one another.. Yesterday, however,I spent the morning discussing matters with hijara/eunuchs and TGs around India and the US...in the afternoon I went to TGVoices and Navodaya's joint office in Bangalore where TGVoices manager was teaching a basic class on computers...after which I took two staff members to visit my hijara/eunuch guru and her temple to the Mataji (Durga) to discuss concrete matters relating to the education and employment of hijara/eunuchs in Bangalore.. Not once yesterday did any hijara/eunuch or TG mention 377 or the "'Eunuch' Protest for Equal Rights"in Bangalore to me.. I suspect that possibly there are many Bangalores...and many uses for hijara/eunuchs as well...some good for them and some not so beneficial...from the 10 pictures in the sideshow that accompanied this postingit appears to me that possiblythe Bangalore demonstration might have been a homosexual demonstration protesting 377...with hijara/eunuchs used to attract international viewing of the demonstration...for the benefit of NGO donors and media advertisers...I cannot say for sure as I was in a different Bangalore at the time.. Only through such freedom can we live our lives as works in progress, which is to say, as the complex, changeful and contradictory creatures that we are. Re: g_b India 'loses 10m female births'
Manan - Both female foeticide and female infanticide push India to the very far reaches of barbarity in the modern world...the generally published numbers that I have seen over the last year indicate that 40 million Indian women are not alive today...women who by simple statistics should be current citizens of India.. Most countries do not have 40 million citizens total...this barbaric treatment of women is the equivalent of killing all the people in Canada or Australia or Belgium or the Ivory Coast...if this inhumane activity is not stopped I expect that India will become a pariah worse than Cambodia or Hilter's Germany to most of the rest of the modern world over the next few years...especially with the current speed of communications throughout the world...your enclosed story is less than a week old and I can guarantee you that people are already ridiculing India in all corners of the world because of it.. In the USA for decades there has been a very strong debate of the appropriateness of abortion (foeticide)...the debate is focused on whether a women has a right to terminate an unwanted birth...and is based primarily on the woman's right to protect herself and her life.. If it was found that foeticide was being used specifically to kill female embryos as happens consistently in India then I can easily imagine the National Organization of Women reformulating much of their stance on abortion.. For me as a Transgendered westerner in India female foeticide and female infanticide as well as the general disenfranchisement of women in societyare the most unsettling aspects of life in the sub-continent.. These aspects are even more unsettling to me than the abuse of the hijara/eunuch population...for without women's rights to live equitably in India it is foolish to think that anyone so unusual as a Transgendered person would be accorded equality .. Elizabeth In a message dated 1/9/2006 9:46:47 P.M. Mountain Standard Time, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4592890.stm More than 10m female births in India may have been lost to abortion and sex selection in the past 20 years, according to medical research. Researchers in India and Canada for the Lancet journal said prenatal selection and selective abortion was causing the loss of 500,000 girls a year. Their research was based on a national survey of 1.1m households in 1998. The researchers said the "girl deficit" was more common among educated women but did not vary according to religion. The unusual gender balance in India has been known about for some time. In most countries, women slightly outnumber men, but separate research for the year 2001 showed that for every 1,000 male babies born in India, there were just 933 girls. Ultrasound The latest research is by Prabhat Jha of St Michael's Hospital at the University of Toronto, Canada, and Rajesh Kumar of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Research in Chandigarh, India. They found that there was an increasing tendency to select boys when previous children had been girls. The sex ratio is so skewed in some states, men cannot find brides In cases where the preceding child was a girl, the ratio of girls to boys in the next birth was 759 to 1,000. This fell even further when the two preceding children were both girls. Then the ratio for the third child born was just 719 girls to 1,000 boys. However, for a child following the birth of a male child, the gender ratio was roughly equal. Prabhat Jha said conservative estimates in the research suggested half a million girls were being lost each year. "If this practice has been common for most of the past two decades since access to ultrasound became widespread, then a figure of 10m missing female births would not be unreasonable." 'Shameful' Sex selective abortions have been banned in India for more than a decade. Experts in India say female foeticide is mostly linked to socio-economic factors. It is an idea that many say carries over from the time India was a predominantly agrarian society where boys were considered an extra pair of hands on the farm. The girl child has traditionally been considered inferior and a liability - a bride's dowry can cripple a poor family financially. The BBC's Jill McGivering says the problem is complicated by advances in technology. Ultrasound machines must be officially registered but many are now so light and portable, they are hard to monitor. Although doctors in India must not tell couples the sex of a foetus, in practice, some just use coded signals instead, our correspondent says. Last year the well-known religious leader and social activist, Swami Agnivesh, began a campaign across five northern and

g_b Sorry Guys...I guess you missed out on this exotic fellow too??
Charles Socarides, Gay 'Cure' Doctor, Dies AP NEW YORK (AP) - Charles Socarides, the psychiatrist famous for insisting that homosexuality was a treatable illness and who claimed to have "cured" hundreds, has died. He was 83. Socarides, died Dec. 25 of heart failure at a hospital near his Manhattan home, his family announced. A funeral Mass was held Friday. He waged an unsuccessful battle to reverse the American Psychiatric Association's 1973 decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, and brushed off frequent condemnations by colleagues who considered his views hurtful. "Gays ascribe their condition to God, but he should not have to take that rap, any more than he should be blamed for the existence of other manmade maladies - like war," he wrote in the Catholic weekly magazine America in 1995. Socarides persisted in his views despite having a gay son, Richard, who became an adviser to President Clinton on gay and lesbian affairs. In the 1990s, he was among the founders of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, a nonprofit group based in Encino, Calif., "dedicated to affirming a complementary, male-female model of gender and sexuality." A native of Brockton, Mass., Socarides decided he wanted to become a psychoanalyst at age 13 after reading a book on the life of Sigmund Freud. He graduated from Harvard College, earned his medical degree at New York Medical College, and got a certificate in psychoanalytic medicine at Columbia University. He taught at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Besides his son, he is survived by his wife, Claire; another son, two daughters and one grandchild. Copyright 2005 The Associated Press. Re: g_b Annie Proulx Brokeback Mountain - Transgendered Voices - Wyoming
Ajay and SikkimKrishna - After your responses to my email...I have included my thoughts on the matter based upon my life as a Wyoming rural TG cowgirl myself...in art there are no right answers...just creations left for interpretation.. I would love to know more about your thoughts on this movie which I find to be an extremely good movie...in both its production and the multi-leveled and complex work of its screen writers...Annie Proulx is the writer of the original story and not one of the screenwriters...literature is generally not followed line for line in its recreation as popular movies.. Lawrence Durrell in one of theintroductions of the Alexandria Quartet explained how the Alexandria Quartet (Justine, Balthazar, etc.)had been written for 'both' types of readers...those who like a swimmer would skim the surface of the water...and those who like a drowning man would sink into the full depths of its vast ocean of thoughts and possibilities...i believe every creation not just Durrell's work are open for multiple interpretations...irrespective of their creators intentions.. 1. On the whole i guess the film is pretty good and i was rather surprised that 90% of the viewers in my show were straight couples... cheers aj AJ - I am from the American West...Jack's wife who is from Texas not Wyoming, was an extremely self-motivated barrel racer, who actually forced herself ona good looking but a somewhat hapless Jack at a bar after a day of rodeoing...she came from a family of very self-motivated people as well...it was evident that hapless Jack had not figured a great way to keep their marriage relationship going on an acceptable basis...strong women do not sit in the back they drive the vehicle...she was being denied that possibility in her personal life... He thought...as my father did...that by not getting physically caught by his wife and children and in-laws that he could get away with his secret gay life... In my father's situation his absence and unanswerable behavior caused much isolation for my young mother and all four of us children...very similar to Jack and Ennis' family situations...I am the only one of the four children who has a fulfilling and pleasant life...and I am an 'odd' personin any society in the world...an asexual, secular 'sannyasi'/'jogin' type...whereas my three siblings are living in the world that my father's antisocial behaviour made acceptable for them... My sister is married to a man who I have caught several times entertaining prositutes and the lower ranking female staff of his company...but she does not have the strength of either Jack or Ennis's wives...she like my mother has chosen to live married to a man who instills self-doubt and personal agony in her by his very presence in her life...she weighs 300 pounds and once earlier in her life was a very successful trial attorney fighting cases for the city of New York...now she is an isolated and confused spouse.. One brother has been carrying on a very active 20 year affair with my second cousin...believing all this time that his imbalanced three children and post-breast cancer wife are ignorant of his behaviours...i.e. ski-trips with my 2nd cousin to Colorado...while his wife and kids are sent onMartin Luther King vacation to the beach in Mexico... My other brother has an obvious secret life that makes him very shy to deal with...and has two daughters who like me...35 years earlier...ran away to San Francisco to reclaim their self-respect...in the world outside their confusing family life.. Everything that each of us sees passes through our own minds for understanding and I originally thought the same way asAjay about Jack's death but the character development in the movie just did not adequately reflect the actions by Jack's wife...she like the cowboys who killed the gay cowboy in Jack's youth did not understand what Jack was hiding when he was hiding it and was obviously more horrified by what she imagined she had found than what she would have been if Jack had honestly 'outed' himself to her... additionally many cow girls are lesbian and or bisexual because of their 'oddness' in an otherwise patriarchal rural society...if you read between the lines it is safe to say that Ennis probably felt there was a possibility that his daughter would not be a happy wife to a
g_b Annie Proulx Brokeback Mountain - Transgendered Voices - Wyoming
Annie Proulx - I had the great pleasure of seeing Brokeback Mountain at the 10 AM showing at the Mayan in Denver on Christmas.. I feel that your story has been very respectfully filmed in light of the current needs to produce a box office worthy movie.. It is with the possible exception of Philadelphia Story the most accessible serious film with gay characters for the day-to-day non-gay public that I have seen...here or in India.. As you can imagine of great importance to me are the story's setting in Wyoming...which has been unfairly bashed in the world media...since the senseless killing of Matthew Shepard by simple thieving criminals from families as familiar to you on your side of Laramie as they were on mine...in Iron Mountain... The culture and people of Wyoming are interpreted by the actors in an honest manner from the two cowboys to Ennis's daughter and to Jack's parents.. I felt a little embarrassed by the awkward representations of murder of gay men in Wyoming in Texas and sadly felt that they had been undeftly edited and placed in the movie to get the greatest buzz from certain members of the publicwho require gore to validate their own personal preconceptions...but these two murders were not major in the time elapsed and were good foils to help focusattention on the brutal response that can erupt from people unable tounderstand the objects of their own personal fears... i.e. the rural cowboy population of Jack Twists youth...in whichboth you and I know from our friends and acquaintances in Wyoming... homosexual behaviour has always been a private, butcommonentity that was generally not flashed around as a public ideal in the conservative and family oriented society...just as extramarital sex and prostitution though very commonare not given any kudos either.. and the frustration of Jack's wife at being excluded from an unknown endeavor that obviously gave her husband Jack a greatdeal of pleasure.. almost certainly she found out about the details of Jacks extracurriclar activities the same accidental way that Ennis's wife and the line boss of the sheep ranch did before her...and hadJack killed and then moved on with her new life with a ranch manager whotreated her better.. Jack and Ennis are very much like many of the gay working cowboys that I know today...both in their incredible strengths and fatal flaws...I am happy that the story was told in pre-HIV. 1960s Wyoming...so that the veiwers could focus on the incredible web of interpersonal relationships that even simple people weave around themselves...and to then allow us to objectively analyze both the good and poor choices anyone can make in life...and the frequently disastrous outcomes that can come froma self-centered individual's frequently confused thought process... instead of being diverted by the present war on AIDS that has engulfed much of the gay media and thought.. I currently have an order into Amazon.com for three copies of Brokeback Mountain to use in our Bangalore and Calcutta, India programs to show married sex addicts who feel that their compulsive daliences with female prostitutes, gay men and hijara/eunuchs can do to destroy not just the lives of their innocent wives and children...but ultimately themselves as well.. India is a patriarchal culture where the women rarely dare to act as Jack's wife did and generally are not given the outlet of honourable and equitable divorce that Ennis' wife chose...the movie thus could be used in assisting thedisenfranchised married womenof India too.. Have a great Winter...I feel much like Tom Horn exiled to burial in the cemetery in Boulder, Colorado these days...as I am sure you might have heard that I have sold my beloved Iron Mountain Ranch to facilitate my work assisting the hijara/eunuch population in India...at least unlike Tom I can walk away into a new and intriguing life instead of being dropped into the black hole of eternity at the end of a rope.. I willforward copies of this email to Sampoorna an Indian TG group, Sappho a Calcutta lesbian group, Gaybombay a Mumbai gay group and Ashok Row Kavi my icon of Indian social work through his Humsafar Trust.. Re: g_b police accused of shameful gay abuse in the U.S
Dax - Could you look at this report and ask Donna Red Wing to review it as wellI am afraid that it is another case of Gays cruelly using the TG community as cannon fodder... This could be an interesting article for you toresearch to help bring the TG Community at-large into the US mainstream...through your excellent LBGT magazine ...Alliance.. Most of us are proud of ourselves and the great successes members of our community regularly achieve in the US...it always saddens me when people claiming to support us actually undermine us by separating us from the other members of general societywith whom we live because ofour supposed supportersagendas need to flog their own devils.. One person mentioned in the report was identified as a 100,000 dollar a year business person who went on welfare after transitioning from Male to Female.. Most of the rest of the TGs were identified with all the 'National Enquirer' buzz of Bikers from Hell or Two-headed Goats...not the simple humans living simple lives that most TGsthat I know are.. Lord knows i would be scared to live next door to anybody TG or not with a proclivity to be involved with evil civil servants on a regular basis.. I question whether the authors of this report really know much about the US TG community, its size, its variety and most of all its success.. Elizabeth In a message dated 9/26/2005 11:52:14 A.M. Two-thirds of police departments reported providing training on hate crimes against LGBT individuals. There are thousands of private charities in the USA and the West that assist the disadvantaged and AIDS suffers...many, many of them are Leftist or populist in their goals...I would recommend that this AIDS orphanage learn these NGOs individual requirements for funding...and to try to exceed their requirements...especially for accountability and quantitative results...for many of the organizations a 200,000 dollar budget is less than 5 percent of their annual assistance to charitable programs...so a proper presentation could easily raise the funds they have currently lost for their programs.. There are many wonderful people on this list with the computer and writing skills to help this organization in this matter...please step up to the plate you may be able to help save a life...GayBombay could even promote...the art of grant writing...the same way they are currently promoting the cuisine arts.. Rajiv - Sadly this TGs death is not an isolated situation...'pumpimg parties' are very popular where ever there are a large number of Crossdressers...who are under-employed or unemployed in the USA...sadly not just deaths but permanently disfiguring results are very common.. I do not know what can be done except more warnings to potential users...and for the crossdressing community and TSs to wean themselves from the masculine ideals of superficial femiinne beaty.. GBoys - Sowhat is wrong with a person who has plastic surgery to make themselves with feel good...I would much rather have a significant other who had had liposuction or a rhinoplasty...than one that reverts to overeating, drugs, drinking, smoking or risky socialand sexual intercourse to find happiness.. Elizabeth [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Gay men lead rush for makeovers, surgeons sayBy Clay LucasJuly 3, 2005Australian men are going under the knife in greater numbers, withdoctors saying the gay community is driving a surge in plasticsurgery. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons says gay Australian men arefollowing their US counterparts and leading the charge for cosmeticsurgery, although gay groups dispute this."Twenty years ago, it was very uncommon for men outside theentertainment industry having cosmetic surgery. Now we see 10 to 15per cent men," Dr Howard Webster, a Melbourne plastic surgeon andVictorian spokesman for the society, said.Much of that growth had come from the gay community, the society said."The gay community has a much higher uptake of cosmetic surgery aspart of their lives than middle-class, white-collar suburbia," DrWebster said. "They are the biggest male group getting cosmeticsurgery. But they're still far less than women."Most common procedures for men were liposuction and upper and lowereyelid surgery, Dr Webster said.Liposuction could cost $2000 to $3000, he said, although this excludedhospital and anaesthetic costs.Eyelid work could cost from $1500 to $5000.The society says more people are having cosmetic surgery in Australia, although it could not supply the figures."There is an increasing demand for plastic surgery here, especiallywith the awareness in the community up after the makeover shows," DrWebster said. There is no national system for collecting data on cosmetic surgery inAustralia. The most recent reliable numbers come from a 1999 NSWGovernment inquiry that said 50,000 Australians had cosmetic surgeryeach year. There was a 16 per cent jump in the number of men having plasticsurgery in the US between 2000 and last year, according to theAmerican Society of Plastic Surgeons, with 1.2 million operations onon US men last year.Gay groups disputed the claim it was the gay community fuelling theincrease in cosmetic surgery."It is straight men who are doing it - not gay men," Troy Gurr, editorof the newspaper Melbourne Community Voice, said."There is so much more pressure now on straight men to look good," he said."I know an awful lot of gay men who use botox, but they will draw theline at actual surgery."But I'm not sure straight men draw that line."OPERATION VANITY· Liposuction - removal of fat· Eyelid surgery· Abdominoplasty - removal of excess skin from the middle and lowerabdomen, to reduce protrusion· Rhinoplasty and septoplasty - altering appearance of the nose· Facial rejuvenation - surgery to lift sagging or deepening foldsaround mouth, brow or neckLESS COMMON PROCEDURES· Chest implants - solid silicone placed beneath pectoral muscles· Calf implants - solid silicone implants inserted from behind theknee and moved into position underneath the calf muscleSOURCE: The Linley Clinic, Canterbury; American Society for AestheticPlastic Surgery-- www.gaybombay.info Group Site: http://www.gaybombay.info == This message was posted to the gay_bombay Yahoo! g_b Good People !!! and Bad Behavior..
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (June 19) - Janet Jackson was in no mood for jokes when she got a cheeky introduction from actor Alan Cumming as she received a humanitarian award from a gay rights group. After Cumming joked that she was never one for controversy, Jackson apologized for her own lack of humor in her first public appearance since brother Michael Jackson's acquittal on child molestation charges. "My family and I have just gone through the least humorous chapter of our lives," she explained in accepting the award Saturday night from the Human Rights Campaign. "I'm going to leave the jokes to the late-night (comics), if that's OK." Michael Jackson was acquitted June 13 following a four-month trial on charges he molested a 13-year-old cancer survivor at his Neverland ranch in 2003. "What I've learned in these recent months is that there is a light at the end of the tunnel," Janet Jackson said. "And it's real, it's a beautiful light that both comforts our minds and strengthens our souls. Tonight my heart is filled with gratitude for that light. I'm so grateful that prayers are answered, that faith is rewarded and tolerance is celebrated as a virtue. I'm grateful that God is of unconditional love." Jackson was honored for the millions of dollars she has both raised and donated for humanitarian causes, notably the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the Elton John AIDS Foundation and the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation. She received a standing ovation from the hundreds of $250-$375-a-plate contributors who crammed the Beverly Hilton Hotel ballroom. Jackson told the crowd, "Acceptance is right. Kindness is right. Love is right. I pray, right now, that we're moving into a kinder time when prejudice is overcome by understanding; when narrow-mindedness, and narrow-minded bigotry is overwhelmed by open-hearted empathy; when the pain of judgmentalism is replaced by the purity of love." 06-19-05 16:09 EDT Group Site: http://www.gaybombay.info == This message was posted to the gay_bombay Yahoo! Subject: PRIZESJohn the farmer was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called pullets and eight or ten roosters, whose job was to fertilize the eggs. The farmer kept records and any rooster that didn't perform went into the soup pot and was replaced. That took an awful lot of his time so he bought a set of tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone so John could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report simply by listening to the bells. The farmer's favorite rooster was old Butch, a very fine specimen he was, too. But on this particular morning John noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! John went to investigate. The other roosters were chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing. The pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover. BUT, to Farmer John's amazement, Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one.John was so proud of Butch, he entered him in the county fair. Butch became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result: the judges not only awarded Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize" but they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well.Clearly Butch was a Politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention? Re: g_b THE RAINBOWFESTIVAL 2005 : Kolkata Gay Pride
Okay girls...get your butts and/or bucks down to Kolkata/Calcutta.. See you there.. Elizabeth [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: From: integration society [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Sat Jun 11, 2005 7:01 pm Subject: THE RAINBOWFESTIVAL 2005 : Kolkata Gay Pride looks for your support integrations... T H E R A I N B O W F E S T I V A L 24th to 26th JUNE 2005 KOLKATA, INDIA Commemorating Stonewall Riots Day, June 1969 The beginning of the Gay Liberation Movement II II\ IIIA venture by INTEGRATION Society, Kolkata, India Dear Friends, Here's wishing all of you success and joy, encompassed in the vibrant colors of the Rainbow! Colors connote the Rainbow, which affords all of us happiness and joy; where we are different and yet together. About INTEGRATION Society . . . INTEGRATION Society, Kolkata has been working as a Communication Initiative on Health and Human Rights for the Youth and Sexual Minorities since 1999, it has taken up quite a few events that have given the issues of alternative sexuality quite a public visibility. Especially, The Rainbow Festival, the only Gay Pride of India happening in Kolkata since 1999, has made a remarkable space in the media and among the public. Visibility being the prime objective INTEGRATION Society picks up events that are not only media sensational but also with strong voices and recommendations. From audio play to short film, from poster presentation to art and craft exhibition all had been executed by INTEGRATION Society, Kolkata since the beginning of its journey. About THE RAINBOW FESTIVAL . . . Among all the activities what Integration Society has earned a space for in India, is organizing THE RAINBOW FESTIVAL, the most impact-making event concerning people with alternative sexual orientation and gender Identity. This is to commemorate the Stonewall Riots Day, June 26, 1969, the red lettered day in the history of the social movement of gay liberation. Today, in India, with a different set of developmental and rights issues to grapple with, more than 100 groups, over last few decades have been showing admirable and encouraging efforts in running the socio-political movement of people with alternative sexuality and gender identity towards achieving a healthy and safe lifestyle and space. But it is still not enough to do away with all kinds of discrimination, stigma, taboo and harassment that GLBT people face in this country. Not enough to ensure equal space and dignity for every individual irrespective of their class, cast, language, religion, sexual preferences and so on. How we Celebrate THE RAINBOW FESTIVAL . . . INTEGRATION Society as an initiator organizing this Pride walk since 1999 in Kolkata. A great concept coming from Mr. Owais Khan in 1999 naming it as 'FRIENDSHIP WALK' has gradually evolved in to a festival and became popular as 'THE RAINBOW FESTIVAL', has achieved an increasing popularity over these years. By 2004, the city had seen the greater gathering around the Rainbow Festival and felt the presence of GLBT communities throughout India raising a chorus for their rights To Love And To Be Loved. Organisiations Like Companions On A Journey from Shrilanka, Naz Foundation from Delhi, Fellowship From Orissa, Amtie, Bandhan, DMSC, PLUS, Prataya, SAATHII, Swikriti from Kolkata and so many individuals from various parts of the world coming together we were about 300 friends that matched steps with each other and sang chorus for equality and dignity. For the cultural events mainstream performing art groups like Sapphire Creations, OnStage, X-Pose and quite a few talented individuals with their solo performances have expressed support and solidarity to this greater cause in different years. The last time was remarkable not only in terms of the number of participants, also looking at the variety, including some lesbian friends showing up for the first time, it gained a real feeling of togetherness. The mainstream, the women groups, other developmental initiatives, Kolkata Police and the media increasingly have come around supporting this mega event. Needless to mention that it is always YOUR contribution that brought all the success to THE RAINBOW FESTIVAL. In a country like India, in a society like ours, sexuality still being dumped under the carpet, YOU, from that very society standing up beside us is undoubtedly deserve a great salute. This year, the effort is to increase the periphery of partners in this venture by encouraging more organisations and individuals, be them community, be them mainstream to match steps with us and share the joy and happiness of being together. The idea is to create a stage to embrace and celebrate diverse, disjointed and different sexualities where you can meet, interact, speak, explore, discover your true self and

I began to reflect on the ramifications are for those of us who do not have the "Freedom" to be who we are. People in the GLBT community are not afforded the same rights as other Americans. We cannot take for granted the freedoms that some Americans have. Because we do not fit the mold that a few "Radical Right" people have defined as being American. We are considered less than human by them therefore do not deserve any rights. Because of this attitude that exists in society, we not just want but require protecttion from those who would prevent us from the pursuit of happiness. If one cannot sustain or even find employment, how can one even begin to acquire the "slice of the American dream" that we Americans talk so proudly about everyone that comes here has the right and opportunity to acquire, or even the basic needs required for exiistence. I am a Transgender I know personally people who cannot even find entry level jobs because they are Transgender. I know engineers, business execs, professors, insurance execs, IT execs, all who have lost their jobs because they dare come out. In many cases they cannot find work in their field of expertise. To hear Governor Owens say we are protected under other laws is laugable. I just spent a year of my life fighting to be able to who I am(MtF Ts). Had it not been that I worked if Denver I would have had no recourse but to be fired or quit my job as a pharmacist. (the City of Denver has an antidiscrimination law that protects GLBT people) Omce a GLBT person has been fired because they dare to comeout be whio they are, it is very difficult if not impossible to find work especially in their chosen field of expertise. Governor Owens' depiction of the long lines that will form on thecourthouse steps is toally withoyur merit. First, if there are that many lawsuits waiting to be filed then there must be a serious urgent need for specila protection of the GLBT community. Secondly, most importantly, when it comes to discriminmation cases it is not very easy to get to the point where you are alled to file a lawsuit. After filing a charge of discrimination you must go through tireless seemingly endless negotiations through a specific mediation process. This is put in place by antidiscrimination puposely to avoid any unnecessary lawsuits. It is only after having the Antidiscrimination office find in your favor and the failure of mandatory mediation after that willyou be allowed to file a lawsuit. These lawsuits go on for years are very costly for both sides. Governor owens is already aware of this. He is just trying to soothe his already aching political career. Governor Owens did do one good thing by allowing sexual orientation to added to "Hate Crimes" bill. Governor I hope you sleep well knowing the GLBT person who is fired or denied a job to today might not be murdered they'll only starve to death! As for Focus on the Family I can only shake my head.I was unaware the Melissa Fryrear had a doctorate in Genetics. I woukd be quite interested in reading the results of her research on where she proved that being GLBT is not genetic. The field of genetics has barely been scratched yet Ms. Fryrear Knows it is not genetic to be GLBT it is a choice. If it is a

g_b Re: Must-see
I got this not from a girl I have known since second grade...who writes for a major magazine in London now.. Has anybody seen the show and/or have a copy they would to send me.. Elizabeth?? Youd love this program that was on Channel 4 here last night. I disagree with the review somewhat I thought it was very sensitively and sympathetically done and featured many useful contributions from biologists and geneticists. It also featured a hija household. The filmaker, Antony Thomas, is highly regarded (he made this famous doc called Death of A Princess several years ago). Anyway, if you can get the C4 press dept. to send you a tape you should definitely take a look.xx EllinMiddle Sex (Channel 4). Directed by Antony Thomas, the award-winning film-maker who made Death of a Princess, it explored the plight of the global transgender community. From ladyboys in Bangkok to a theatrical 8-year-old from the American Midwest, Thomas took us on a whistle-stop tour of alternative sexuality, highlighting the difficulties and prejudice that these people face. The picture was made up of individual stories, some horrid, others more encouraging. Sylvia Guerreros daughter Gwen was killed by a gang of crazed boys when they discovered that she was in fact a he. Their rage was a response to the realisation that they were attracted to in some cases sleeping with a boy. It made them doubt their own sexuality: one was heard to say: I cant be gay, I cant. Meanwhile, a little boy called Noah practised his disco dancing and showed us how to tie a leopard-print scarf as a skirt while his parents explained how much they loved him. His mothers greatest fear was the future. Fifty per cent of transgender people will either kill themselves or be killed, she said sadly. This was a remarkable documentary, but more because of the people featured than the experts or the programme itself. There is always an element of voyeurism to these sort of things, and the makers failed to neutralise that, dwelling too long on unnecessary details. It also lacked a certain moral fibre. I would never judge anyone according to their sexuality, but I dont like pornography of any sort, and too much credibility was given to a man who had married a lady boy and set up a pornographic transgender website. Its a sad fact that an exploitative sex industry is precisely where transgender people tend to end up. It was wrong to be endorsing that, however passively. I have indicated that the vast agricultural potential to our south would have to demonstrate political and financial stability over a decade period before I would give them equal status. There was optimism that the market economics would lift these regions out of the doldrums. For a decade this occurred; however, storm clouds are emerging in these economies as some corrupt politicians have channeled the benefits away from the poor and middle classes.
