There is a wayland greeter which uses greetd and gtkgreet which may
be worth looking at and there is a gentoo wiki which goes a long with
it. It works with wayfire which is a nice wayland window manager and is
very reliable.

Also look at https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Wayland_Desktop_Landscape

I was using media-libs/mesa-20.3.5 and upgraded to 21.1.2 (which
stopped issue)

I did not upgrade any drivers previously but have now upgraded libdrm
2.4.105 to 2.4.106 but this did not help.

Was using stable kernel 5.10.27 but upgraded to 5.11.22 but this did
not resolve issue.

Currently using a Radeon 5600 XT graphics card with latest
linux-firmware-20210518 but was using this before problem.

in make.conf I have following use flags

Noticed a minor oddity with sddm where text not rendering correctly so
decided not a gtk problem but strange that qt apps where hardly
affected.

Updated mesa to latest version (currently masked) and issue
has gone away.

[gentoo-user] GTK Graphical Problems

2021-06-02 Thread jdm
Hi,

At the weekend I updated my system and after reboot some of my apps
have lots of black black squares/rectangles all over the place, covering
all of the app window and making email difficult to write.

Initially I thought this was a Wayland problem as using Wayfire but
switched to X11 desktop and still had same issue.

Trying all my apps this looks to be a GTK related issues as happening
with claws-mail (worst), gkrellm, gcolor2, Bluefish etc. QT/EFL apps
seem to be fine (qtfm, keepass). Firefox-bin works just fine, oddly.

Anyone else seen this. I see a thread talking about GTK slots but not
sure if this is related.

I've rebuilt all gtk related packages which has not helped.

John

[gentoo-user] Kernel Time

2020-09-21 Thread jdm
Hi,

I have read on distrowatch that Gentoo has released some Kernel related
packages.

So having a look round I can see

gentoo-kernel
gentoo-kernel-bin

What are the differences between them?

I assume that using these you no longer need to compile your kernel (if
you don't want to)?

I have tried gentoo-kernel-bin but trying to do a make install throws

sh ./arch/x86/boot/install.sh 5.4.64 arch/x86/boot/bzImage \
System.map "/boot"
sh: ./arch/x86/boot/install.sh: No such file or directory
make[1]: *** [arch/x86/boot/Makefile:155: install] Error 127
make: *** [arch/x86/Makefile:294: install] Error 2

Anyone else tried this?

Thought it could be useful for a few virtual machines.

Thanks.

John

PS the handbook is down and there is not much related documentation.

Hi,

Not sure if this may help but there is a library which you can install
called dev-libs/libcgroup which has an init program /etc/init.d/cgconfig

In the config file /etc/cgroup/cgconfig I have

mount {
"name=systemd" = /sys/fs/cgroup/systemd;
}

which allows lxd containers to run using systemd

Not sure if this what you are after but maybe of use. It allows me to
run Arch linux containers in Gentoo.

Hi,

Config from X470 ASUS Pro motherboard with AMDGPU set up + Ryzen 2700X
processor. Only 16Gb of RAM (feeling slightly inadequate).

Not seeing any problems with VLC freezing or any other apps and running
stuff through Wayfire.

Wasn't sure what process was running with ps -ef or if it was a kernel
thing.

Hello,

I have had to use the Gentoo Minimal Installation Cd to rescue my
system due something going wrong with UEFI boot crazyness. Which is
resolved now.

What I have noticed is that you can use a mouse and copy/paste at the
command prompt in what looks like framebuffer/tty session or whatever
that is called before you get GUI desktop.

Anyone know how this magic is done? It's well cool.

Thanks for advice.

I like playing games and noticed with current card that FPS is low on a
lot of games.
I have tried to get a balance between not paying too much and specs of
monitor (2560x1440 @60 fps). According to GPU check I should get max of
80 fps @ 1440. So thought I would have some left in the bank with 5600
XT.

I'll check CPU to GPU rate.

There's too much choice and now a little worried that next card might
not work again.

[gentoo-user] Graphics Card Advice

2020-04-29 Thread jdm
Hi,

I have just bought a RX 5600 XT and after a few issues with screen
freezing after kernel starts loading, resolved by compiling EFIFB (no
previous FB compiled in) the card has been working fine for 2 days
booting normally. The machine then started not to boot, not even to get
to BIOS (so you couldn't even press DEL to get to BIOS screen). I took
the card out and replaced with old card and PC started fine. I tried
this 4 times and still with new card PC would not even POST. I don't
have a little speaker to here if there are any beeps.

I am returning the card as it feels like that is the problem but have a
nagging suspicion this could be some other problem like power supply. I
have 700W coolermaster PSU which should be ample (according to websites)
but is 9 years (amazingly they had the foresight to provide 8 and 6 pin
cables which were both plugged in).

My next issue is do I get another 5600 XT (different brand) or are
nvidia equivalent better? I have always been an AMD fan. Could I end up
in the same boat.

PC spec - ASUS 470 Pro MB with 2700 Ryzen.

Any advice would be much appreciated?

[gentoo-user] KDE Panel Mouse Problem

2020-02-22 Thread jdm
Hi,

For the last three versions of plasma including latest 5.18 I am having
a problem with panels. If I put autohide on and place the mouse on edge
of the screen to get the panel to show my mouse (pointer) jumps to
another part of the screen. It jumps out of the panel which hides again.

This has been happening for the last 3 versions, I have created a new
user and still have the problem and cleaned up configs.

I have tried 3 different type of panels (app, default and empty) and in
4 places. It's even worse when placed on left or bottom as mouse
jumps to centre.

When the panel is not on autohide there is no mouse jump

Any ideas.

After some testing this looks like a kernel problem. I updated kernel
to 4.19.86 and keep getting slow start up of wireless card during boot
process. Revert back to 4.19.82 and have no issues and PC keeps booting
in very fast time.

Think I'll try something newer as they must have done some wirless
network ath9k updates to 86. Deep joy. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
But maybe is for someone else.

[gentoo-user] XDM Start Faster

2019-12-09 Thread jdm
Hi,

Over the last couple of weeks my wifi connection net.wlp5s0 doesn't see
to want to connect at boot up (It used to be very fast but now taking
1min +). Therefore XDM (login screen slim) takes a long time to start
up. And LXD daemon doesn't start at all.

I have my rc.conf set to rc_parallel="YES" but if I set this to "NO"
then clamd seems to take an age to start up as well as the wireless.

Is there a way I can get XDM to start quicker and leave the other
services to start up whilst logging in. I can then set rc_parrallel to
"NO" which I hope should ensure LXD starts correctly.

It's only a minor gripe but feels like it's taking a long time to
login. At least if I can get into desktop I can change wallpaper,
themes and icons whilst my wireless decides to get a grip.

Thanks

I have updated firmware line in kernel as this now includes a few extra

Hi,
Will try disabling X as always boot straight into WM.

Video card in Radeon RX480 and I have firmware loaded into kernel
as followed wiki. I will check this I have not looked into this for a
long time.

/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log Current and Build are consistent.

I'll see if I can see c-state in BIOS which another email suggests as
well.

[gentoo-user] Black Screen of Death

2019-07-18 Thread jdm
Hi,

For the last 2 months I have been getting a problem where my machine
locks and after 2 seconds goes to a black screen. The machine is then
unusable, ctrl-alt-delete F1 or sys rescue keys do not work and you
cannot remote login.

I initially thought this was a problem with lxd but then experienced
issue when just using Enlightenment desktop. I have switched to xfce4
but still getting issue.

It happens 2 to 3 times a week.

There is nothing in logs (/var/log/messages).

I upgraded BIOS a beginning of year so don't think it's that but have
just upgraded again to see if that helps.

Running ASUS Prime x470 Prime with ryzen 2700 and have upgraded kernel
to latest stable when running emerge --update...

Any idea on how to debug an issue like this?

I do dual boot with Windows and have not had this issue there so feels
like a Linux issue. Playing some quite intensive games on Windows but
last lock up on Linux was opening a terminal.

Any advice or guidance would be much appreciated.

I decided to update virglrenderer upto version (not sure if I
should do this but heyho) as there is only one version available. This
has allowed me to run vm from CLI so that has helped there but not with
virt-manager, which now just shows a blank screen.

I have a RX480 radeon card which is yearish old so perhaps support for
newer cards is not as good.

[gentoo-user] virt-manager qemu problem

2018-11-17 Thread jdm
Hi,

I am trying to run virt-manager and or qemu with 3d acceleration using
virtio-gpu options.

When I start the virtual machine in virt-manager all I get is a screen
of static (complete screen corruption of lines and blocks)

I also get the same problem when trying to start from CLI with the
following

/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 \
-enable-kvm \
-cpu host \
-smp 8 \
-m 4G \
-net nic,macaddr=52:54:00:12:34:56 -net user \
-soundhw es1370 \
-usb -device usb-tablet \
-show-cursor \
-vga virtio \
-display gtk,gl=on \
-drive file=arch.img,if=virtio &

This used to work fine but has recently gone wrong. I have tried
several guests all with the same results of corrupted screens.

I can start machines with normal qxl options and all is fine so
think this is just an issue with virtio 3d acceleration.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Slight annoying. It would nice to know if I can capture issue somehow.

Well, well, well.

Bizarre. took out my old radeon r9 280 card and put the RX480 amdgpu
back in and rebooted to a kernel which I had configured for amdgpu
and booted with no issues, not needing modeset and xorg working fine

Never seen anything like this before. Bring back the days when you had
a primary and secondary hard drives on a serial bus. Far easier when
you have to configure your own IRQs.

[gentoo-user] AMDGPU KMS Problems

2017-07-12 Thread jdm
Hi All,

A few months ago I bought a AMD RX 480 GPU and followed the Gentoo
amdgpu guide and everything ran just fine with excellent graphics
performance.

At the weekend I upgraded my PC from a AMD 970 chipset to a x370
chipset (fx8300 to ryzen 1700x).

I re-installed Gentoo but the first time I started the boot iso the
screen froze, so I tried the nomodeset option and booted ok and
installed as per usual.

After rebooting to new install the screen froze again and the only way
to get it to boot was using kernel option nomodeset. This then gave me
another problem as it could not startx (no screens found).

I checked the config of the kernel (inc firmware) and could not find
an issue. I then tried arch/fedora/ubuntu and all froze at boot and then
worked with nomodeset.

I have now gone back to using an old graphics card which uses radeon
and have no problems starting xorg-server.

1) Is this likeley to be a kernel issue (amdgpu drm)?
2) Could this be a firmware issue (amd)?
3) Could this be a motherboard/processor issue?
4) Can you think of any ways round this so I can use the RX 480 gpu

Any thouhgts much appreciated.

John

Hi,

Just followed the amdgpu wiki guide to get my new graphics card up and
running. Excellent wiki guide and had no issues. Now running with
shiny graphics and throwing all that Steam has to offer at it.

Many Thanks to the wiki authors.

Will we always have to include binary blobs into the kernel for AMD
cards? This feels kind of odd for me so wondering if this will be
included as a package or a kernel driver at some point or what the
future direction is for AMD graphics with Linux.

It may not be alien but not done this before so curious.

Yes, you can set up youtube cookies to recognise that you want to use
HTML5 as Neil suggests, or if you still want to fix Konqueror to
play flash videos you need to go in Konqueror settings/Plugins and
click on Scan for Plugins. It should pick up what it needs as

In addition to that, you can also deactivate the Flash plug-in, in
which case YouTube switches to HTML5 once it notices that the Flash
plug-in is missing (it only fails if your browser does not support any
of the formats the video is available in). Recently I've gone over to
using the FlashDisable extension for Firefox to only activate Flash
*temporarily* when I really need it.

Also, consider youtube-dl, which came recommended by a friend and has
worked wonderfully for me for a variety of sites (youtube, vimeo,
soundcloud, etc.).

Are they flash or HTML 5 videos? Are your plugins configured as they
should be in Konqueror?

PS. I don't think that there is a difference between webkit and khtml

I have tried both 32 and 64 flash (and all versions), with and without

Its just an annoyance as I can play all with firefox. It's just that I

this is just trying the following

lxc-execute --name jack /bin/bash

I am not using a config file (I didn't before). Do you now have to have

[gentoo-user] Hard drive change

2012-11-08 Thread jdm
I am about to change my hard drive on my machine from a 500GB to 2tb.

To transfer I intend to dd the partitions across and then resize using lvm as

Is this the right approach or would you recommend another method?

[gentoo-user] uefi gpt grub2

2012-11-08 Thread jdm
Over the last few days I have tried to set up using uefi gpt and grub2. After
many hours of frustration I have gone back to grub legacy and mbr.

I followed the Gentoo wiki and Arch wiki and several other sources of which I
failed miserably. Is this technology fairly unreliable? I booted from a uefi
enabled usb stick but still fell over. Is this ready for mainstream or
 still alpha like?

Also does ufibootmgr change motherboard firmware? Somehow this feels
wrong if the case.

Can you connect both drives ate the same time? If so you can create a PV
on the new drive, add it to your VG and then use lvmove to move the date
before removing the old drive from the VG. That way you can continue to
use the computer while the transfer takes place.

[gentoo-user] qemu-kvm and xscreensaver

Whenever I run a qemu-kvm when xscreensaver starts it stops guest os from
working. Eg if I am emerging on guest or downloading a file when xscreensaver
starts on the host the guest freezes. Stopping xscreensaver and guest continues

I can cure this by disabling xscreensaver but should this happening and is
there a way round this other than to turn off xscreensaver on host.

I have disabled hibernate or sleep but this makes no difference. It seems to
happen when the screen goes in pretty picture mode.

I am running gentoo host with gentoo guest and desktop is xfce on host.

[gentoo-user] Keyboard

2011-09-20 Thread jdm
Fellow Gentoers,

I have just bought a nice and shiny new gaming keyboard

Solid Year Keysonic KSK-6001 UELX

The keyboard works at BIOS, grub and in Windows.

But is totally unresponsive using Linux apart from Backspace(lol)

After searching the net I found the issue was due to anti-ghosting
built into keyboard. This can be turned off with Ctr-Alt-Shift-N and
keyboard works fine.

Are there any drivers which can be used to disable this?

It's not too bad but a minor irritance but nice to have a cure.

Thanks

my question is what is the easiest way to get rid of kde/gnome stuff? is
this enough to change my useflags to -kde and -gnome? Is there any list
what I can safely unmerge in this case?

You change your profile. You can see your current profile with:

   eselect profile list

For KDE you would use default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/kde and for
 Gnome default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop/gnome.

For anything else, use default/linux/amd64/10.0/desktop. Then do a:

   emerge -auDN --with-bdeps=y world
   emerge -a --depclean

If KDE/Gnome stuff still remains after that, use:

   emerge -pv --depclean package

 to see what's pulling-in package.

Are you sure that's all? No need to change my global useflags at all?
When I change profile and check what would be re-emerged, only a few
minor changes exists. What I would like to achieve to get rid of all
the fat kde/gnome stuff but of course without re install my whole
system. Is there anyone here who already did something similar?

I was wondering the same thing. OP, did you upgrade python and forget

Also, yours should look like this too:

root@fireball / # eselect python list

root@fireball / #

Make sure you don't have it set to 3.1.

Firstly would you reccommend cloning and if so what is best
 technology?

When I move to a different machine, I just

  * boot into a live cd
  * back up all the partitions with rsync (or use tar or similar if
you need compression) to an external (USB) drive.
  * boot new machine into livcd
  * repartion, copy backed up files
  * install bootloader (and reconfigure/build kernel if necessary)

If both source and target are on the same network you can probably also
get away with rsync'ing over the LAN instead of using an external drive.

As for what technology is best, they are not going to make a whole lot
of difference, IMO. I find rsync/cp easier to work with (you can
manipulate files before copying them to the new box). tar is more
efficient if you need compression. dd, would be the least efficient in
my opinion, because it's going to clone the entire partition, including
unused blocks, when you're really only concerned about the files. Tools
like partimage, etc. can clone a partition smartly but I tend to use
those tools less often as I'm really only concerned about the files, not
the partitions. Unless your source and target partitions are going to
have the exact same geometry, I don't see the benefit if cloning
partitions.

Just my 2¢

You might have to run python-updater in order to install all

Subject: [gentoo-user] Questions about the magic Sys Req keys

Howdy,

I just had a hard lock up. I had a random reboot the other day while I
was sleeping as well. This was with gentoo-sources 2.6.39. I'm not
sure what caused the one the other day but I had several days of
uptime. The one I just had was also after a few days of uptime. I was
logged into KDE when EVERYTHING froze. The mouse pointer wouldn't
move. The clock stopped. The numlock light wouldn't even change when I
hit the key for it. So, X was locked up pretty good. I also couldn't
switch to a console either. This is the odd part. I tried to use the
magic Alt SysReq keys to at least try to get a reasonable shutdown.
They didn't work either.

So, my question is this. What kind of lock up could keep the magic keys
from working? This is on my new amd64 machine. It was totally stable
until the kernel upgrade. I think this could be a kernel issue. I
booted a older kernel and will test it for a few days but wanted to know
what kind of lockups could keep the magic keys from working. After the
hal/xorg deal, we all know how I hate hard resets. ;-)

Thanks much.

This has been happening for a long time and definitely before openrc.
I usually reboot to avoid the hang ups.
 JDM

You should be using the rc command tho init should work in theory.
Example, rc single or rc default or whatever runlevel you want to
switch to. That is without the quotes tho.

I did notice earlier that when I switch to single, it is not
unmounting some file systems for some reason. When I try to switch
back to default, rc sort of pukes. If I unmount everything first, it
switches cleanly. I think openrc has some . . . weirdness still.

You can check out the rc man page for more info. That help any?

Let me add this, if you type rc then hit tab twice, you should see some
more rc type commands. You may want to check into some of them too.
They provide info and do other things, including adding/removing things
from a runlevel. I'm assuming you are a bit new to Gentoo. I may be
wrong and it wouldn't be the first time either.

Hey Alan,

to get the current USE flags use

emerge --info

and look at USE=...

This does not include local use flags, for those you should check your files in
/etc/portage/package.use or /etc/portage/package.use/

Felix - you need to start reading the post-install messages when
emerging things.

With Gentoo, a lot of times, you have to actually do things manually
after installing something - as you found with GRUB.

Most people set things up so they get emails of the post install
messages when emerging things, but it is up to you to actually read them
and, when necessary, follow the instructions.

For me and a lot of others, it was worthless at first. It was good eye

Yea, it is what I want but it is also what MANY others wanted. Some of
