[Gimp-user] Help needed with icon creation

2007-03-25 Thread Nigel Henry
I'm trying to create an icon for a music app, but am having a few problems as
a newbie to the Gimp. The icon greatly enlarged is attached below.

My problem is with the elliptical speaker. I need to create a flange which
represents the fixing points of the loudspeaker, and also need to to create
some reducing ellipses on the cone to give some feeling of depth.

Can anyone give me some hints?

I've got the 2.2 manual running on one machine, and am working on FC2 on the
other machine using Gimp 2.0.

Thanks for any help.

Nigel.

[Gimp-user] Batch save as with *baseline* encoding

2004-05-22 Thread Nigel Ridley
I want to be able to view my photos on my new LG dvd player; however it
only recognises the *Baseline* encoding.
I can of course manually open each jpg, do a 'save as' with the 'Force
baseline JPEG' option and overwrite the original using the same
filename. But obviously it would be nice to use the command line to do a
batch of jpg's al at the same time.

Is this possible? (also recursively thru child directories).

TIA

Blessings,

Nigel Ridley

It is not really a config problem as I have *View > Preview > Images*
selected. The problem is that only some of the jpgs show up as
thumbnails and no matter what I do, I can't get the ones that don't now
show up [as thumbnails] to show up -- not even creating a new image from
them, as I detailed in my first post.

This is what leads me to believe that there must be some sort of
embedded info in them.

It was because of the stuttering of my mouse whilst trying to move one
pixel at a time (without magnifying too much) that got me thinking about
a trackball - is it difficult trying to hold the *left* button and move
the trackball at the same time? That's why I asked about the *locking*
button.

Does anyone know if the Logitech Cordless Optical Trackman works ok
under Linux - especially with The Gimp (I can't afford a tablet :-()?
I'm not sure how many buttons it has - looks like about 6 or 7.

How does one drag and drop (ie. moving a graphic around inside a
graphic) using
a trackball - does the *lock* button work, or does one have to struggle
holding the *left* button down whilst moving the trackball?

Yes, I got it working ok!
I installed the latest .debs for sane and Xsane from sid; copied the
relevant 'firmware' file from the cd that came with the scanner to
/usr/share/sane, then edited the 'firmware' line: firmware
/usr/share/sane/u176v046.bin in /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf and now it
works.
Just one thing though - there is a need to let the scanner *warm up* first
after it is re-connected to the computer (power or USB cable) before
trying to start Xsane.

Thanks for the encouragement :-)

Nigel

[Gimp-user] USB scanner, Xsane and Gimp

2003-02-17 Thread Nigel Ridley
Hi all,

I know this isn't exactly Gimp stuff - but I am trying to access my new
USB scanner through the Gimp:
File -> Acquire -> Xsane: Device dialog
and I figured that lots of you guys must have already set up a USB scanner
:-)
Anyway, I've done a lot of google-ing but so far have been unable to find
out how
to set it up.
When I re-booted the system (I installed a new sound card - SBLive [which
I'm still trying to get working]) the usb modules loaded ok and I have an
entry /dev/usb/scanner0 (-rw-rw-rw-). However, when I try to access it
from within the Gimp (or thru Xsane), I get an error message that no
devices are available.

I did do a 'sane-find-scanner -v' and got the following:
sane-find-scanner: checking /dev/usb/scanner0... open ok, vendor and
product ids were identified
sane-find-scanner: found USB scanner (vendor = 0x04a5, product = 0x20b0)
at device /dev/usb/scanner0

Do I have to mount the scanner first- if so what do I put in /etc/fstab?
Or is it that I have to make the system think that it is a scsi device?

Any pointers welcome :-)

Blessings,

Nigel

Hi,

I have used png's in place of gif's on my Messianic E-Cards.com website as
I had to manipulate many of the images that came with the greeting card
script that I purchased.
The Gimp could save gif's but on requesting a license from unisys * (The
Gimp doesn't have a 'built in license') there demands were so extreme that
I switched everything to png.

I have just checked on our old computer with IE 4.0 and they all show up
wonderful! Granted they are basic png's with no fancy transparencies but
they work just fine.

The email reply that I got from Unisys informed me that I needn't pay the
license fee so long as the gif was created with an app that HAD paid the
license fee - such as PaintShop. Unfortunately The Gimp doesn't have a
license and so the problem. They were adamant that if I manipulated or
created gif's using The Gimp that I would need to purchase a license. That
was only 2 months ago!!

If your really desperated and don't mind using something other than The

Hi,

Are you sure you want to use gifs? I also thought about it for my
'non-profit' website and wrote to Unisys to ask about a license - their
answer? $10,000 per year and 1% of all products sold on my website (I did
inform them that I wasn't selling anything!). So I switched everything to
png's.

Have a look at:
http://www.jamesshuggins.com/h/tek1/burn_all_gifs.htm
and, if you want animated graphics:
http://www.libmng.com/

RedHat crippled Xmms (media player) in 8.0, also because of patent
problems - so that is why they probably don't include the 'gif' plugin in
their Gimp RPM's.

Hi,

following results (only a few here):
http://www.geocities.com/dodiemiro/construction.html
http://www.barrysclipart.com/animations/?gid=17109

Google is your friend! (Most of the clipart is free to use - though
sometimes a link back to the authors website is expected).

It's quite strange as the problem doesn't exist in other *graphic* apps
such as KPaint.
I'm not sure if Xfree in 9.0 is a different version from Mandrake's 8.2

[Gimp-user] Problems with Mandrake 9.0

2002-10-30 Thread Nigel Ridley
Hi all,

Has anybody else experienced problems when trying to change the color of
individual pixels when creating or editing a graphic?
When I try to change the color of individual pixels using the pencil (
with the smallest *point*) the pixel may or may not actually change;
sometimes, actually quite often, the pixels are changed in a seemingly
random order, substituting the surrounding pixels instead of the one that
I clicked on (if I drag the pencil, then blocks of pixels are randomly
changed).
This also happens when using the eraser tool.
It is not an actual problem with The Gimp because if I minimise, then
restore the graphic's window then the actual changes made are seen rather
than the *apparent* changes as seen when working on the graphic.
It would seem then that the problem is a rendering one rather than a bug
in The Gimp itself.
I have the exact same problem on my laptop (also with Mandrake 9.0) - so
it's not a problem with the video card - but never experienced it before
using Mandrake 8.2 on either computer.

Maybe I could install The Gimp from source in a directory of it's own away
from Mandrake's installation and therefore avoiding the rendering issues -
would this solve the problem? If so how do I do it and satisfy all the
dependency requirements?

cheers,

Nigel Ridley.

It's called kcolorchooser.
I did a quick search on google but it apears to be a part of KDE graphics
rather than a stand alone app.

Re: [Gimp-user] Eraser tool for a specific colour?

2002-07-06 Thread nigel

Gimp does not have a colour eraser "tool". It does have a colour to
alpha plugin though. By default the plugin will remove the selected
colour from the whole image. To constrain this you will need to make a
selection befor running the plugin.

Re: [Gimp-user] Filling on a transparent background

2002-07-06 Thread nigel

Hope this makes sense;

Place a white layer underneath - return to the transparent layer -
double click fill tool; turn on sample merged and set MODE to BEHIND,
will probably need to push threshold up as well, then fill.

Step3: Right clicking on the white widget (or whatever its called) will
allow windows users to select forground or background colours bypassing the
need to set values manually.

Using the measure tool to determine the angle followed by the transform tool
is another way to do this.

Re: [Gimp-user] Combining (two) photos with overlapping areas

2001-04-08 Thread Nigel

Check out Grokking The Gimp, section 7.5 it has an exercise in panoramas
that covers the blending, alignment and colour adjustment of overlapping
images.

Using resynthesiser is a novel idea, would be keen to see how this might
work myself.

Subject: [Gimp-user] Combining (two) photos with overlapping areas

Hello all

is there a method to build an image from two (ore more?) photos with
overlapping areas? Several problems seem to be solved:
- overlapping areas are not totally identical in structure
- overlapping areas are different in colors due to influence of light (sun)

Anywhere I have seen a hint to use the resynthesizer to do this job. But I
can
not see the way to do so.

Thanks in advance

Re: [Gimp-user] Looking for a certain tutorial

2001-04-06 Thread Nigel

Was bored so did a quick search (but then google is always quick when the
right key words are choosen, only took me two goes, but I digress). Go to
google, key words; gimp, mask, shadows. Should be the 5 link down, the
graphics-muse site. This site was in a mess when I went to it, so ended up
loading it from googles cache .

The levels or curves tool can be good for bringing out detail in shadows as
well so you may want to look into that sometime as well.

There is a balloon script out there, I downloaded it not so long ago just to
see what it does, it looks like it might be what you are asking for. I got
it from http://technoid.xodox.com/ or at least I think I did, can't be sure
