these more conventional methods, using different ways of blurring, I
had tried already. The best I could achieve was:

then becomes like image 4.
Not very satisfying :-)

There is a tutorial on the Gimp User Group website http://gug.sunsite.dk/ on
touching up black and white scans that may be helpful.

installed gimp-print 4.3.10. I am trying to use gimpto print to my HP
