There is a balloon script out there, I downloaded it not so long ago just to
see what it does, it looks like it might be what you are asking for. I got
it from http://technoid.xodox.com/ or at least I think I did, can't be sure
as the site seems to be down right now.

loading it from googles cache .
The levels or curves tool can be good for bringing out detail in shadows as
well so you may want to look into that sometime as well.

The method I use is to;
filter>colours>colour2alpha to remove background
check the 'keep transparent' button on the layers dialog,
then select > all
set the forground colour
then use the fill tool

Step3: Right clicking on the white widget (or whatever its called) will
allow windows users to select forground or background colours bypassing the
need to set values manually.

Gimp does not have a colour eraser "tool". It does have a colour to
