I agree with you and perfectly understand what you say. I understand layers
very well, because I used photoshop before. The thing is, the old tutorials
confuse me by the menu options which are not available to me for my version
of Gimp 2.6.2, and their screen shot look different from this version
I just followed your instruction and created text outline with a breeze. I
did hit some very old tutorials, which I wasn't able to tell because they
don't say when it was written and what version it was targeting.

actually appreciate their effort very much. Only that it helps if they say
to what version it was targeting and when it was written.
