[Goanet-News] Book Release: Time traveller one George Menezes
Time traveller one George Menezes Mumbai Mirror | Aug 28, 2013, 12.35 PM IST Columnist, humorist, satirist, former diplomat and an 'outspoken Lay conscience' of the Catholic church, George Menezes's sixth book is about to hit the stands. An anthology of his various works, The Naked Liberal, pieces together George's eventful life from the 30s to the present decade. So if you have the former IAF pilot talking about his experiments with politics and pot, there are also vignettes of an elegant society in Bombay, Goa and Paris, with rare photographs, letters and anecdotes as a bonus. Eighty-four-year-old George, now a resident of Bandra, has interesting plans for the launch. We hear two Mumbai bravehearts - traffic warden Anita Lobo and Major General Ian Cardozo - will do the honours. Lobo needs no introduction to readers of this newspaper - she was one of the Mirror Heroes thanks to her integrity and commitment toward implementing traffic rules in the suburbs. Cardozo, a 1971 Indo-Pak war hero who lost a leg in a landmine explosion, went on to become the first disabled officer in the Indian Army to command an infantry battalion and then a brigade. [Goanet] BOOK RELEASE: More Matata (Braz Menezes)
MORE MATATA: Love After the Mau (Matata Books, 2012) This is the Sequel to Just Matata: Sin, Saints and Settlers (Matata Books, 2011) and (Goa1556, 2012). Synopsis ‘Matata’ means trouble in Swahili, and falling in love across racial barriers is big matata, especially in Kenya, a segregated country seething with tensions after the Second World War. Lando, whisked out of Goa and back to Kenya, finds himself enrolled in a non-Catholic Asian school on the edge of an African residential area, just as the Mau Mau, a secret organisation determined to overthrow the colonial government, is slowly spreading its grip of terror from the far-off White-Settler occupied Highlands, into the urban areas, around Lando’s school and allegedly into his home when British forces round up Mwangi (the houseboy), his wife Wangari, their 7-year old Stephen and the baby. They disappear without trace. Getting through exams at the time of the Mau Mau prove a challenge. Meanwhile the Winds of Change are already gusting across Africa and the rest of the world. In a few years the Portuguese and British are forced to give up their colonies in India and East Africa respectively, and just as the racial barriers fall, the Goans who have lived under colonial rulers for over 450 years, are left rudderless and stateless, and have to make hard choices. In spite of all this matata, Lando and the beautiful Saboti meet again under extraordinary circumstances, and that is the biggest matata of them all. Family, friendship, race, terrorism, romance and love, all play their part in this engaging story. Available on Amazon.com: http://amzn.to/YH4D0n Kindle edition: http://amzn.to/SMsk6s Both Matata Books are also available on Amazon Books in the UK, US, Canada, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. [Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: Belinda Viegas' ‘The Cry of the Kingfisher’ reviewed by Jeanne Hromnik
A novel from Goa that offers the universality of experience By Jeanne Hromnik Writers are advised to write about what they know best. It took me a while to realise that this refers more to mental than material territory, which is why a middle-class writer can write about a slum child and an urban writer’s subject can be rural characters. In South Africa we carry this debate all the way to whether a black person can or cannot write about a white person and vice versa. ‘The Cry of the Kingfisher’ covers a large geographic area -- Kenya, England and Goa – where three lives unwind and eventually come together in a story in which the tension between these three strands is skilfully maintained. Donna, daughter of affluent Goan parents, grows up in England. Succorina is born in a Goan village, and Mayola spends her childhood in Nairobi before the family returns to Goa. The author, Belinda Viegas, is a Goan, who spent her childhood in Kenya. There are many very literate people who have never heard of Goa. For me, also of Goan parentage, it was a delight to have Goa and things Goan treated naturally and without the need for explanation. Reading the novel, I was unprepared for the thrill of recognition, the verification of Goan identity that it offered. However, it was apparent from the beginning that the real ground of the novel was somewhere else. As Maria Aurora Couto (author of ‘Goa: A Daughter’s Story’) points out on the back cover, it is in essence ‘an honest and courageous exploration of complexities of the human mind’. ‘The Cry of the Kingfisher’ – the bird’s cry is both harsh and lovely – takes one into areas of sadness and alienation, the cruelty of parental ambition and traditional beliefs, madness, rebellion and the substitution of material comfort for love. It juxtaposes the lives of three very different women, building up and providing release from emotional suspense in a beautiful act of story telling. The dream sequences that preface the later ‘chapters’ are poignant and revealing. Unfortunately – for me – ‘The Cry of the Kingfisher’ has a thesis: that parents impose enormous and unnecessary pressure on their children because of their ambitions and lack of understanding, and that escape from such pressure comes from realising one’s own potential and creativity, the only true source of happiness. This is best illustrated by Donna, whose socialite mother and ineffective, though less insensitive, doctor father create in her a constant sense of failure and alienation until she eventually rebels and finds refuge in a world of drug addicts and counter culture abhorrent to her parents. Before this, a family visit to Goa affords the kind of comfort that the child is desperately in need of. It also introduces one of the two grandmothers who feature significantly in the novel and whose presence falls credibly within the story as it unfolds. ‘The Cry of the Kingfisher’, that is to say the story, begins to fail for me when Donna, with help from Mayola (by now a practising psychiatrist), starts to analyse her own situation and the novel’s energies begin to flow increasingly into explanation and remedy. There is a remedy through psychotherapy even for Succorina, the unwanted village daughter, who escapes but then returns to her confining and ignorant village world. Mayola, the psychiatrist, inevitably becomes the voice of the author instead of a credible character. There are other interesting points that are raised by ‘The Cry of the Kingfisher’. Language, for instance. How do you represent in English the voices of people who, presumably, are speaking in Konkani? Is it important, difficult as this is, to differentiate between the English of an English Goan, a Nairobi Goan, a Goan Goan? The Goan diaspora lurks within the novel, with the consequent demands on the story-teller, and writers from outside the inner circle of the English-speaking world have a particularly difficult task. Such concerns do not really interfere, however, with the success of ‘The Cry of the Kingfisher’. What the novel offers instead is the universality of experience, wherever in the world. The nerve endings that it touches so bravely and honestly are the same everywhere. (Jeanne Hromnik is an editor based in South Africa. She traces her roots to the village of Moira in Bardez.) Wendell Rodricks' memoir titled The Green Room will be released by Amitav Ghosh in Goa. ABOUT THE BOOK ‘[A] fine writer with a very distinctive, natural voice... The Green Room [is] a riveting read.’ — Amitav Ghosh, on www.amitavghosh.com/blog ‘A gripping and entertaining book... As someone who loves the fashion industry and always aspired to be an insider, this is a delicious “inside” look!’ — Sonam Kapoor Epicurean, travel addict, voracious reader, art appreciator, astonishingly talented designer—Wendell Rodricks is a man who wears many hats. From growing up in a ‘glorified Bombay chawl’ crowded with eccentrics, to building homes in Muscat, Istanbul and the French Riviera; from being a novice in the hospitality industry, to exhibiting at Pret-a-Porter Salon de Paris and IGEDO, Dusseldorf; from designing clothes for his family, to dressing style icons such as Catherine Deneuve, Meg Ryan, Lisa Ray and Freida Pinto—Wendell’s life has been an extraordinarily rich and exciting one. Peppered with wry observations and startling insights, The Green Room is not just the story of one man but also of the evolution of the Indian fashion industry over twenty-five years. It is both a deeply personal journey and a window into the enchanting yet fickle world of the rich and the famous, the beautiful and the neurotic, the gossips and the bores. Candid, irreverent and unfailingly entertaining, this is a memoir of the man who gave India minimalism, resort wear and eco-friendly clothing long before these words became fashionable. It is a sparkling piece of writing that tells the story of a fascinating life lived with unusual courage and flair. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Wendell Rodricks spent his childhood in Bombay and started his working life in Muscat. He then moved to Los Angeles and Paris to study fashion design and couture. He returned to India in 1988 and quickly gained repute as a designer, working with renowned brands such as Garden Vareli, Lakme and De Beers. [Goanet] Verodiano Award 2012 for 'Goa 1556'
Verodiano Award 2012 for ‘Goa 1556’ The 2012 Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award has been conferred on Goa 1556 in recognition of its pioneering commitment to record Goa’s variegated past, project its kaleidoscopic present, and accentuate its pendulous future. Goa 1556 is an alternative publishing venture, founded by veteran journalist Frederick Noronha. The company name was inspired by the arrival of the Gutenberg printing press to Goa in the year 1556 – the first of it’s kind in all of Asia. As Mr. Noronha succinctly put it, the primary goal of his publishing company is to “democratise the production of knowledge”. The company, states Mr. Noronha, “doesn’t seek profits but exists because today, more than ever, Goa needs a voice to articulate its own priorities.” The editorial modulation of Goa 1556 is non-fiction writing related to Goa, with emphasis on books which “shed interesting new light on various aspects that help better understand the complex region called Goa.” As of August 2012, Goa 1556 has amassed an assortment of 45 titles to its credentials. Instituted in 1989 by Dom Martin, the objective of the Vincent Xavier Verodiano Award is to promote the well being of mankind through individual advancement in the field of art, music, literature, science, medicine or humanities. It strives to recognize individuals who may not have been relatively well known but whose works needs recognition. The award was founded by Dom Martin, in memory of his late father, Vincent Xavier Verodiano. The winner is announced on the 20th day of September, and the award is conferred on the 5th day of November. Goanet A-C-E! goanet at goanet.org

[Goanet] Soul of Art
SOUL OF ART Patricia Ann Alvares As architecture and heritage play out in perfect unison at the Portuguese imprinted Latin quarter of Fontainhas, the inclusion of art is but natural in such a setting. Envisioning this way back in 1988, connoisseur and avid art collector, Ajit Sukhija first opened Gallery Gitanjali at his ancestral home, Panjim Inn. But the gallery remained low profile until the advent of daughter- in- law Miriam Koshy- Sukhija in 2004. Allowed a free rein by Ajit and husband Jack, Miriam gave it dimension, focus and form, turning it into one of the most prolific and trendy art spaces in Goa. “ The idea is to provide a platform for art education, as well as help people discover the artist within,” avows Miriam, who has continually sought to engage artists and art lovers in a series of interactive workshops and activities. The Panjim Pousada ( 1997) and the Panjim People’s { Gallery Gitanjali} ( 2004), which were roped in later, are today the main hub of these activities. WelcomHeritage Panjim Inn retains its repute as a heritage hotel. Interestingly, all three are housed separately within a triangular hop from each other. Apart from its activities, the triune galleries are unique in their set up, juxtaposed between the antique and the contemporary. The Panjim Inn has retained most of its Portuguese influence with a few modern touches. The Panjim Pousada has a striking open chowk with a double terracotta- tiled roof in a square verandah encircling a raj aangan. Panjim People’s art space occupies the ground floor of a colonial Portuguese house. A striking 6-feet wooden carving of Ganesh stands in welcome posture at the entrance. A café in the forepart of the gallery, where one can read art books or listen to music of their choice while soaking the art and antiques around, is irresistible to most visitors. Precisely chosen for this special quality, it was designated as centre for discussions and lectures during the erstwhile Fontainhas Festival of Art. It continues to be patronized for private conferences till date. A self- taught curator, Miriam’s MBA degree has held her in good stead as she learnt the finer nuances of curating, organizing shows while locating viable art markets. Tying up with Saffron Art Gallery Mumbai and with inclusions in social media sites like Facebook and India Art Works, she has nudged the gallery into an international arena. Working on the premise of getting people to react and engage in art while combing various forms of creativity with art, Miriam’s latest endeavour Chitrangan-skills and techniques is an off-shoot of a successful alternative art studio Chitrangan held last year. Similarly, Between the Lines, A Happening: Kodel, Kutre ani Kinetic, What you see is what you get ( WYSIWYG), The art history club Zeitgeist and Picture This- art appreciation course which are continual activities, have all received tremendous response from the artists as well as art lovers. Imago: Exploring the language of film and Temenos: The Film Study Circle, which had taken a hiatus after two years are likely to be revived soon. “ Basically you get an idea of art in all its forms and possibilities. Art gives multiple permutations and combinations of what it can be. For that matter, there is art everywhere. Art is a touchstone to open peoples’ minds and make them see things differently. This was one of the aims of WYSIWYG,” explains Miriam. With a flair for conducting art shows, Miriam has displayed various genres of art at these galleries ranging from the realistic to figurative, abstract, expressionist and more. Renowned names like Mohan Naik, Rajshree Thakkar, Suhas Shilkar, Francis De Souza, among others have been hosted here. Again, not all art shows have conformed to the standard. In a departure from the normal, Iranian artist, Sohela’s teamed her art exhibition with a dance performance titled “ Tribal Wisdom”, followed by an art animation film based on her artworks. Caving in to the call of the creative, Miriam recently debuted as an artist with her installation Split Wide Open. Toying with the idea of art residencies in the future, she also hopes to have a continuous lecture series where people bring in perspectives not only from India, but abroad as well. As she broadens the horizon of art in Goa, Miriam continues to delve into the soul of art. (ENDS) http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=6610boxid=2245524uid=dat=8%2f30%2f2012 Goanet A-C-E! [Goanet] Cut to Finish: Wendell Rodricks' The Green Room reviewed by Namrata Zakaria
. Rodricks mentions the ills and quirks of being gay in India and when travelling. They choose to live with dignity instead of in-your-face campiness. They choose to give each other a loving glance instead of holding hands in public spaces. What Rodricks’s book especially does is to present the Indian fashion industry as a vibrant, professional, and fast-growing mass of people that is soon going to be a mainstream voice — if it isn’t already. There is little or no cynicism, which is rare and refreshing among the deluge of designer ego that turns them into colossal cribs. Rodricks is positive, optimistic and grateful for his instinctive talent and many opportunities. As he is for the future of India and its creative steam. [Goanet] 1865 Furtados (VM)
and Mumbai-born soprano Patricia Rozario. Leaning over the desk in his modestly appointed office at the Panjim, Goa, branch of his family’s company, Christopher says, “All of today’s benefits have come to Furtados because we kept the faith, kept working hard to satisfy the needs of our customers all through the lean years of the import ban.” That service ideal of strict loyalty to the customer’s needs is at the heart of Furtados’ value system, which Christopher describes as “our trademark, our USP, the source of all the goodwill that we now enjoy”. Christopher also tells me with visible pride that 90% of Furtados sales (many of which are big-ticket) are strictly on the basis of MRP, or maximum retail price. “It is true we don’t offer discounts on price,” he tells me with a smile, “but there are also no discounts on service, and no discounts on quality.” Furtados has built an intensely loyal customer base by reciprocating the near-fanatical allegiance. It is a most unusual value to nurture in the 21st century, and I saw evidence of it on a counter outside Christopher’s office while walking out after our meeting. There stood an array of plaster statues and religious supplies, all at extraordinarily low prices that couldn’t possibly yield profit margins of more than a few rupees—certainly not enough to justify the space they occupied. But this trade has been part of their family business from the beginning, and that is enough for Furtados and the Gomes family. They have learnt what it takes to keep a good thing going for decades. [Goanet] Patricia Rozario rules the (sound) waves
and other cities on the Giving Voice to India map? In terms of enthusiasm, potential, commitment, diligence? In Goa, participants have taken longer to commit. Initially we had just a handful that stayed the course and kept coming back. Mumbai on the other hand being a cosmopolitan city has been so much better in this respect. And not surprisingly, those who made the commitment have made really great strides in their development. Things have gotten so much better after my student Faye Monteiro was appointed as Faculty in the Voice Department of the Kala Academy. There’s a batch of fresh young voices who really understand what Giving Voice to India is all about, and they will develop in the right way. One will not need to spend time having to undo bad habits picked up along the way. Even in Mumbai, I have designated two teachers to keep the singers going and ensuring that there is consistency in the method and the level of teaching, and that they go forward with me. The ideas of the some of their former teachers are very old-fashioned and needed to be discarded. 7. It is certainly the experience in Goa that our very gifted young musicians have had to go to the UK or Europe to get trained to the highest standard. How can we create an environment and opportunities in India for our youth, so that a talented singer can pursue his/her voice training to such high standards, and then make a decent living from it? We just do not have such a milieu right now. We have recently created the “Giving Voice to India” society, comprising seven people. We are compiling a list of music festivals around the country. We need to give young singing talent the hope and optimism that they can have a platform to show off their voice to the highest level, and that they can earn a decent living from it too. We need to build infrastructure for this too. The schools and centres for music have to work on incorporating movement and dance as well. All this will happen in good time. There needs to be consistency and continuity. One needs to lay a rock-solid foundation, and then build upon it. For this, continuity is key. I worry about the trend in India where resource persons come in, give a few sporadic masterclasses, and then leave. There could be far more harm than good, from this. 8. You’ll be pleased to hear that the Kala Academy has recently announced their keenness to widen the horizons of western classical music in Goa. I’m delighted to hear this! I’m very excited at the possibilities this will open up. 9. Do you plan to have any concerts in Goa in the near future? We’re planning to bring in a youth choir from London, the Westminster Chamber Choir, in October 2013. This will be a collaborative venture with singing talent from India as well. Their music director will come earlier to work with the choir in Mumbai, to instruct them on matters of technique and interpretation. We want to take the choir on tour to Mumbai, Goa, Pune and Delhi. There are other projects being planned too, so the future does look bright! [Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: Fashion of the Gods - A review of Moda Goa by Wendell Rodricks
Fashion of the Gods Devdutt Pattanaik I was browsing through famous fashion designer, Wendell Rodrigues wonderful book on Goan fashion — Moda Goa. In tracing earliest fashion that may have existed in the Goan region, we enter the realm of mythology and discover images of gods still worshipped who display what would have been the clothes of our ancestors. I say our ancestors, and not just ancient Goan clothing, because I realised the same clothing would have been seen across India. Goa, like much of the Western coast of India, is associated with Parashuram, the Ram who held an axe, and belonged to the clan of Bhrigu sages. It is postulated that he is perhaps a mythic embodiment of sages who brought the Vedic way of thinking to a land that was otherwise inhabited by hill tribes (there are cave drawings and markings in Goa that can be traced to the Stone Ages). What did Parashuram and the sages wear? It was probably ‘valkal’ — fabric made by beating the leaves and bark of the banyan or pipal fig trees. They may have also used animal hide. And bedecked themselves with flowers (Lakshmi’s lotus), and leaves (Hanuman’s Arka) and seeds (Shiva’s Rudraksha). What stands out in the later period is the use of unstitched cloth draped in various way around the body, and extensive use of jewellery. Both these fashions indicate rise of settled communities because spinning, weaving, dyeing, mining, smelting and smithy demands expertise. Some of the images — the most spectacular being that of Bhairava, known locally as Betaal — reveal guardian gods and fertility goddesses who wear nothing but huge chunky jewellery. Was this reality or artistic fantasy, we will never know. But many tribes around the world wear jewellery and expose parts of the body that modern society considers private. A common dress worn by the tribes even today, and could have worn in ancient times, is a simple woollen blanket thrown over the shoulders and a loin cloth around the genitals, or a sarong wrapped around the waist. Were these the clothes that the vanars or ‘monkeys’ of Kishkinda wore when they encountered Ram and Lakshman? With the rise of what is called the classical, or pre-Islamic period, comes the use of men and women draping cloth mostly cotton, sometimes Indian silk and occasionally shimmering expensive Chinese silk with gold threads interwoven — one cloth for the poor to cover the lower parts, two cloths for the slightly rich to cover upper and lower bodies, and three clothes for the very rich to cover even the head with a veil or turban. Gradually, women in Goa, as in many parts of the Deccan, wore the eight or nine-yard sari, the upper and lower garment fused into one, wrapped creatively, the lower part like a dhoti and the upper part like a shawl draped across the breasts. It is interesting to see how the dress of the gods changes with time. The fashion of the gods influenced the community and the community influenced the gods. Typical of Goa and Karnataka, the Shiva-linga is covered with huge brass and silver masks. And the face looks like a Maratha warrior complete with moustache and turban. And the goddesses have a classical half-moon-shaped nose-ring, which is common in Maharashtra too. Interesting too is the importance of cosmetics, especially pastes and unguents to wash the body and keep away body odour. Hence the practice of giving daily baths with oil and water and unguents to deities, a reminder of what the devotees are also supposed to do. One does not realise how much knowledge is locked in the temples of India. We just have to look and I am glad Wendell did. [Goanet] Patricia Rozario's 'Giving Voice to India' workshop : 26-30 July 2012
Giving Voice to India is an ongoing long term project to improve the singing of western classical music in India and to increase the enjoyment and appreciation of that music. It appeals to all who wish to sing, from choir members to potential soloists, and to all those who wish to enjoy singing well. Giving Voice to India seeks to run four times per year at three month intervals. It is given by world renowned soprano Patricia Rozario, OBE and her husband, pianist, writer, composer and broadcaster, Mark Troop. The course consists of a carefully constructed programme of vocal exercises, recording student progress, language development and style and interpretation. The next course will take place from 26th to 30th July at Kala Academy. Although the emphasis will be on classical music, the course welcomes singers from diverse backgrounds – classical, jazz and pop – who are interested in improving and developing their natural voices. Singers and voice teachers are encouraged to avail of the excellent training that is on offer here. Patricia Rozario and Mark Troop are world-renowned artists with vast experience in teaching and communicating their unique skills. [Goanet] Goan Modernism
completely changed the trajectory of Indian art forever. Those impoverished misfits are now the most feted modern Indian artists. As Souza later said, they made themselves into great artists by sheer dint of ambition, their startling originality 'evolved over the years of its own volition; out of our own balls and brains.' By the 1960s, the Goan was a sensation in London and Paris, the first Indian artist to make it big in the galleries of the West. Once again, this part of Indian history is familiar - there are several decent books on the Progressive Artist's Movement and its significance. But what has never attempted - cue Rupert Arrowsmith - is a connecting of the dots between Souza and Vasudeo Gaitonde and Laxman Pai (Goan friends who became associated with the Progressives), then back into time via da Cruz (the Goan migrant to Bombay who became Gandhi's favourite painter) and Chimulkar (another prodigiously talented JJ School artist from Goa) to Angelo da Fonseca to Trindade. There are also readily apparent connections to be made to Joseph Furtado, the Goan migrant to Bombay who is credited with the first 'chutnified' Indian English prose and poems, to Lucasinho Ribeiro, the Goan migrant to Bombay who invented Tiatr, the first European-style revues performed in an Indian language, and then eventually to the Goan musicians who 'invented the Sound of Bollywood.' As recounted by cultural historian Naresh Fernandes, many of the songs that have come to define modern Indian culture were written and arranged by Goans, then performed by largely Goan orchestras and combos, with the 'playback singing' very often also provided by Goans like the sisters, Asha Bhonsle and Lata Mangeshkar. All of this adds up to a considerable case. In short, many of us believe the evidence shows that Goa was the first crucible in India which exhibited the climate for modernism to emerge in the subcontinent. We see an early modernist impulse steadily come to fruition in the explosion of native Latinate art and aesthetics that occurred all through the second half of the 19th century. Then, with the rise of Bombay - significantly shaped and influenced by Goan migrants - we see unmistakable, unquestionable modernism itself, more often than not shaped by Goans like Trindade and Fonseca. What is more, this Goa-Bombay modernism has a global significance which is still very far from being properly understood or recognized. As the prevailing global narratives on the subject are being entirely rewritten by a new generation of art historians, we have an opportunity and also the responsibility to ensure that Goan art finds its rightful place once and for all. [Goanet-News] Goan art renaissance
Goan art renaissance TNN | Mar 18, 2012, 04.43AM IST All through the 20th century, Goa produced many of the most important and influential artists of the subcontinent, but every single one was forced to leave to seek opportunities elsewhere. We know the Goa government has always ignored its own best cultural talent. But potential art patrons - the economic elites of Goa - have also never displayed the sophistication required to recognize the art geniuses of their time. Generation after generation, our best artists such as Trindade, Fonseca, Chimulkar, Pai, Souza and Gaitonde have all been forced to seek their fortunes abroad. The case of the latter pair of Goans - lifelong friends and arguably the two most important modernists in Indian art history - is particularly stark when seen from their homeland. They both struggled to make a living right to the end. And both felt abandoned and neglected by their own people. It is an inconvenient truth that just ten years ago, any one of our richer citizens could have bought up scores of masterworks from either Souza or Gaitonde for the same price as just one imported car. But none of them ever did. We're still not much better in 2012, as we see history repeat itself at two impressive group exhibitions underway in Panjim. Together, they demonstrate a new generation of artists in Goa is steadily becoming a formidable cultural force, despite being overlooked by society. Those looking for the next Souza or Gaitonde could find him in the ongoing group exhibitions at Gallery Gitanjali (Fontainhas) and Ruchika's Gallery (Miramar). Ruchika's Gallery is the most impressive modern art space in Goa. While programming remains intermittent through the year, its management hosts large annual exhibitions that have quickly become the best way to see works by a large number of Goa-based artists. Over time, the quality has improved. 'Carnival of Colours 2012' is unexpectedly, consistently outstanding. While young artists have contributed some of their best work - notably Sachin Naik's immense woodcuts - it is the senior artists who really impress. Theodore Mariano Mesquita's 'Tempus Fugit' is the work of an image-maker of the highest capability. Similarly, Hanuman Kambli's untitled contribution showcases the senior artist at his very best. Francis D'Souza's abstract landscapes were a revelation. I rate them alongside the best Indian abstract painters work: Antonio e Costa, even the all-time-great Ram Kumar. But the gold medal surely goes to Sadguru Chendvankar, for the clear-eyed, rigorous 'The Beginning Foot'. It, and many other paintings in this exhibition, should be secured by the state for the benefit for future generations of artists. These very future generations dominate the exuberant curatorial debut by Miriam Koshy Sukhijia at Gitanjali Gallery. 'WYSIWYG' is an irresistible, obviously sincere collective effort by many of the participating artists to experiment, to take risks and push personal artistic boundaries. The ethic extends to the great Vamona Navelcar. Known for his elegant line, for epitomizing gentility, the seniormost contributor has rendered a grotesque skull-bedecked 'Ogre', a painting that immediately recalls Angelo da Fonseca's 'Apocalypse' (a likewise searing vision painted after a lifetime of making serene images). Praveen Naik's 'Whatever You Desire May it Be Fulfilled' is a highly memorable mythological future deity sculpted from papier-mache, thermocol, plastic and wood. It's also impossible not to like Norman Tagore's cheeky Thanda Matlab...(After Wei-Wei), a traditional mud water vessel with the Coca-Cola logo stenciled on the side. Andy Warhol would have smiled at this Ganvti Pop Art. Sitting discreetly on a table at the Gitanjali gallery is the best single work across both exhibitions. 'Ways of Seeing' is an exquisite, intimately personal artwork by Rajeshree Thakker. A little box shaped like a cupboard, it keeps unfolding to reveal hidden wonders. It is an apt metaphor for art in Goa in 2012. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/goa/Goan-art-renaissance/articleshow/12311858.cms Goanet A-C-E! [Goanet] WYSIWYG - What You See is What You Get (Gallery Gitanjali)
Gallery Gitanjali invites you to WYSIWYG - What You See is What You Get, a multimedia exhibtion with paintings, drawings, assemblages, sculptures, combines and installations curated by Miriam Koshy-Sukhija. Explore the Art of Seeing with artists from Goa. Opening on March 10, 2012 at 7 pm, the works will remain on display until March 20, 2012. Gallery Gitanjali E-212,31st January Road, Fontainhas, Panjim, Goa www.gallerygitanjali.com WYSIWYG What You See Is What You Get The artist perceives what is yet unseen while looking into the world. She sees that which is possible embedded in what is real ,bridging with memory and imagination the yawning gap between seen and unseen realms.* She speaks to our capacity for delight and wonder, to the sense of mystery surrounding our lives: To our sense of pity and beauty, delight and pain. With this act of creation she imbues the mundane and commonplace with new meaning and adds resonance to the sterile thus transforming them into the vital. The cornerstone of any work of art is the artist's perspective, her ability to see beyond surface realities, to look with the mind’s eye with the deepest voice of the soul. It is what she sees and interprets in a situation, in a moment, in a state of being, in an object, in her house, city, state, nation, world or even in herself. WYSIWYG aims to peel away the blinkers of conformity and cliché with which the everyday is perceived by sharing the artist’s unique perspective with you. Her ability to capture the fleeting moments where the subject and its significance come together in a striking or dynamic way to create works that are shocking, provocative, witty, poetic, ironic, dark, conceptual, realistic, representational, relational in a variety of media which include the conceptual and the traditional. * Paraphrased from LAURA SEWALL The question is not what you look at but what you see. [Goanet] BOOK RELEASE: Just Matata: Sins, Saints And Settlers (Braz Menezes)
Goa Chitra request the honour of your presence for the release of the book Just Matata: Sins, Saints And Settlers, a Novel Set In Goa And Kenya; penned by Braz Menezes. The book will be released by Consul-General of Portugal in Goa, Dr. Antonio Sabido Costa. DATE: February 26, 2012 TIME: 5:00 pm VENUE: Goa Chitra, House No. 498, Pulwaddo Benaulim Goa Goa and Kenya are tied not just by numbers of migrants of the former to the latter, but by Goans who made a difference to the African country. There are persons who helped build the economy, excelled in sports and others who gave its politics direction. Pio Gama Pinto is perhaps the best known face. The book release will be followed with the author Braz Menezes in conversation on the Goa- Kenya connection with renowned psychiatrist and writer Dr. Belinda Viegas Muller and Alexandre Moniz Barbosa, writer and current Assistant Resident Editor, The Times of India, Goa Edition. About the book: This is a truth-based but slightly fictionalized account of a Goan family told about sixty years later, with sensitivity, acuity and humour. Told through the senses of eleven year-old Lando, the freshness and detail of his descriptions throughout the book captures the keen observations of the sea voyages between Mombasa, Kenya and Mormugao and the dynamics of racial segregation, caste and religion. The book is co published by Goa, 1556 and Broadway Publishing House. About the author: Braz Menezes, Kenya-born with family origins in Raia and Loutolim, Goa, now lives in Toronto. His work has appeared in various anthologies, including Canadian Voices, Vols. 12, Goa Masala, Indian Voices and Canadian Imprints. He is an architect and urban planner. Synopsis: The author Braz Menezes, born in Nairobi, has his origins in Goa, a small but beautiful bump off the western coast of India. Situated on the Arabian Sea, Goa has beautiful ocean beaches and is now an international tourist destination. But for much of 450 years, starting with the explorer and conqueror Vasco da Gama, and ending with an Indian Army invasion in 1961, it was a prized Portuguese possession but a backwater, no less. Goans, traditionally simple, hospitable, educated and Catholic, became a diaspora people like the Jews of old, not out of persecution but economic necessity. In the early and mid twentieth century, the colonial service in East Africa where they served Britain faithfully and well, became their passport to a better future. Kenya, where half of the narration takes place, was a fairly recent British conquest and in the period of the book they had sufficiently established themselves as the governing power and were consolidating their administration and infrastructure. This is a truth-based but slightly fictionalized account of a Goan family told about sixty years later, with sensitivity, acuity and humour. It is sufficiently contemporary to hold general interest, but even if it were not so, Menezes’ easy style would sustain the reader throughout. He has great appreciation of the Kenyan lands, flora and fauna, and his descriptions of nature in Africa bespeak of an ecological passion. He is a storyteller in the genre of Rohinton Mistry and Michael Ondaatje, first-generation award-winning immigrant writers in Canada. Told through the senses of eleven year-old Lando, the freshness and detail of his descriptions throughout the book shine like embedded stones in the already bright necklace of its chapters. The sea voyages between Mombasa, Kenya and Mormugao, Goa, are occasions of keen observation of the foibles of the travelling circus around him. So also are the dynamics of racial segregation, caste and religion, that drove Goan families to do things that were not always in harmony with the wishes of its members. Though sadness is rare in the book and when present is not heavy or burdensome, yet the young Lando’s troubles stalking him at every turn, make the reader pause and reflect on one’s own passages of life. The book can best be described as quiet excitement and is worth every minute the reader spends reading it. Although complete in itself, this first book will without a doubt cause one to look forward to the next in its trilogy and hope it is as good. No mean feat to overcome. Goanet A-C-E! Alex Raphael Fernandes (popularly known as ‘Alexyz’) is one of the most prolific cartoonists of India with a number of popular newspapers and magazines regularly featuring his works. Former Goanz president Corvin Carvalho is organising the exhibition comprising 40 cartoons at the Carmelite Chapel (636 Mt Albert Road) in Hillsborough on February 5 from 1030 am to 1 pm. Entry to the exhibition and lecture is free and open to all. Mr Carvalho said Alexyz is known for his outspokenness and readiness to support any cause that fostered public interest and community welfare. “He is one of the most socially concerned cartoonists of Goa. His interests range from politics and current affairs to environment and sports,” he said. Among them are Readers’ Digest, Indian Express, Illustrated Weekly (now ceased), Midday, Sportsweek, The Daily, Goa Today, (Goa) Herald, Navhind Times and Gomatak Times. Mr Carvalho said that like most cartoonists, Alexyz is funny, irritating and even exasperating. “For the past several years, he has given a fillip to fun-loving Goans. He is one the best-known and best-loved cartoonists of our State,” he said. In his debut in Carnegie Hall with the American Composers Orchestra in April 2008, he “proved there’s still plenty of life in old-fashioned virtuosity with “Bantammer Swing,” a playful, athletic concerto for his unwieldy contrabass flute, according to Steve Smith of the New York Times. His music is available on many CD recordings and has been performed throughout Europe, North America and Asia. Ensembles and festivals that have commissioned McGowan include the American Composers Orchestra, Dutch Radio Chamber Orchestra, Zephyr String Quartet, Calefax reed quintet, the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, the Netherlands Flute Orchestra and the Grachten and MATA festivals. As co-founder of the Amsterdam based Karnatic Lab Foundation, he curates a record label and a monthly concert series dedicated to new music. [Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: Voices of Goans through my thoughts (Nisser Dias) reviewed by Julian D'Cruz
Voices of Goans through my thoughts Julian D'Cruz JULIAN D’CRUZ One more feather has been added to the laurels of literature with the release of ‘ Voices of Goans through My Thoughts’. The speciality of this book is that its self published by one of Goa’s daring sons of the soil whom all will agree, has through this publication, checkmated what Goa is getting famous for: its “ corruption overdrive”. The 230- paged book is a compilation of what the author and South Goa based journo, Nisser Dias, has penned vociferously in Goa’s local daily The Gomantak Times over the last two years. He has selected 44 of those articles to publish his first book for all who love Goa and hate to see it reeling under politicos who only pretend to love Goa. Whether social issues, environment, sports to more complex issues of legislation, law and order, education, the author has brought out how politicians can be petty or manipulative to serve their own interests when in reality they have been elected to serve you and me. It is even more infuriating, rather, amusing, to know from Dias’ book how many of our politicians have even tried to sabotage issues or steal the limelight when the spotlight is not even focused on them. There are several other chapters in this book which takes a dig at almost all the present day politicians and a must read is what Dias has entitled ‘ Birds of a feather, flock together’. ‘ Voices of Goans through My Thoughts’ does not spare the State’s police force and the book has a section on Goa’s policing. These will send chills down one’s spine on reading all about how the law enforcers in Goa are themselves unlawful in their behaviour. Any reader will feel anxious for the safety of his mother, wife, daughter and the womenfolk when they find out how women are treated by cops in and out of police stations subjecting them to acts of violence, sexual assaults and much more. What is even more shocking is to note how police personnel whether PSIs or PIs involved in horrendous offences have been promoted instead of being suspended or sacked. Worse still, Dias’ section on Goa policing will send your head spinning over the fact that the men in uniform are drug peddlers and also involved in money laundering and circulating counterfeit currency. Despite being caught on camera, they still continue to hold office. Dias has raised hardened queries to the political captains on all such issues even slamming the chief minister for only protecting his ‘ kodel’ and allowing mass scale destruction of Goa on all fronts. The author firmly states that the present cabinet has no right to celebrate Goa’s golden jubilee. ‘Voices of Goans through My Thoughts’ has however hailed social activists and many others who are the rays of hope to save Goa of dying from the malignancy of corruption. It has saluted brave heart Goans for attempting to march on the streets and to prove that we are no longer going to be ‘ susegado’ under any government which refuses to serve us in letter and spirit. Dias has expressed in his book and through his articles the frustrations, anxieties that we feel and queries that we generally raise but have no platform to give vent to or voice only because we are just ‘ aam aadmi’. Call it ‘ write in time’, ‘ Voices of Goans through My Thoughts’ is out on the eve of assembly polls in Goa and all candidates will have to be cautious while campaigning. The book carries the bitter truth about Goa’s political history and no politician dare to hoodwink the Goan electorate on any issue. Priced at Rs 299, the book is a prized copy any true hearted Goan must want to possess and add to his collection of good literature and reference material. The book will serve as a testimony for future generations who will look back one day and wonder what went wrong for Goa and Goans even after they drove the Portuguese away! [Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: Moda Goa: History and Style by Wendell Rodricks - reviewed by Swati Daftuar (The Hindu)
Showcase: Spotlight on Goa SWATI DAFTUAR He has a number of achievements to his name: one of India's top 10 designers, an accomplished chef, a mentor, a revivalist. And now, Wendell Rodricks will also be an author. His book, Moda Goa: History and Style, is all set to release at the Jaipur Literature Festival on Monday. Rodricks weaves a rich tapestry of history, clothing and passionate prose, while documenting the rich history of Goan costumes. The collection is full of photographs and illustrations that bring the subject to life. He charts the earliest form of clothing, making note of the Buddhist drapes that carried forward the elaborate style of later Hindu costume, the fine brocade coats of the Muslim Tughlaq rulers and the Portuguese invaders who had to improvise and alter their traditional Renaissance style to suit the hot Konkan climate. Rodricks also studies the western style dresses of the newly converted Goan Catholics. The book explores an archive that has never been researched before, and the history of Goan costume charts out not only its own history, but that of the state as well. Rodricks is the first person to place this history in the spotlight. Through illustrations by European travellers, a wealth of photographs by Mark Sequeira and India's finest fashion photographers, and access to the fine clothing and jewellery of Goans, Rodricks transports the readers to the beauty and backwaters of India's golden state. Eleven years of research on Goan costumes have resulted in Moda Goa, a book that brings to a head everything Rodricks has worked towards, his talent as a designer, his passion for clothes and style, and his love for Goa and its heritage. Bottomline: A rich tapestry of history, clothing and passionate prose. http://www.thehindu.com/arts/magazine/article2813805.ece Goanet A-C-E! [Goanet] 'Tiatr will be 120 years old this April' - Tomazinho Cardozo
'Tiatr will be 120 years old this April' DOLCY D’CRUZ As every institution, the Tiatr Academy of Goa ( TAG) has its share of decision making and has successfully worked out schemes that help the younger and older generation of tiatrists. Giving a brief history of the academy, Tomazinho Cardozo, President of TAG says, “ This demand to form an academy was put forward by followers of Konkani in Roman script. When demanding for Konkani as the official language, there was equal status for Konkani in Roman script and Devnagiri script. Now since Konkani is mostly written in Devnagiri script, we put forward 13 demands which included changing the name of the indoor auditorium in Ravindra Bhavan as Joao Agostinho Hall which has been done. A cultural policy was implemented whose Chairman was Dr Nandakumar Kamat. He asked me to give inputs about tiatr for the cultural policy. The Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat showed great interest as he felt that tiatr was the most dramatic art form of Goa and yet it was not given due respect. Though I am not beneficial to the CM in his political life in any way, he selected me as the President of the academy and formed the Tiatr Academy of Goa.” Tiatrs have been performed at different levels in Goa. What brought about an academy after all these years? Tomazinho answers, “ Tiatr will be 120 years old on April 17, 2012 and so far tiatrs were being organised by dramatic troupes with no financial support by the government. It was done completely on their cost and the commercial success where there is no chance for experimentation with the form but just giving people what they want to watch. Through the institution, we bring up the standard of tiatr so that the tiatrists can experiment with the form and take it to the next level. The government has given TAG one crore, eight lakhs rupees to start the academy and a separate amount to start a library. A ten member committee was selected which in turn elected a ten member General Council who unitedly elected the Vice President. An eight member executive board was formed to bring functional structure. Once the entire committee was formed, 36 schemes were decided upon for each section of tiatr and music.” Each schemes plays an important role towards preserving tiatr and since the academy was formed more efforts were made to get information for aging tiatrists. “There was no oral documentation of tiatrs as once the tiatr was performed the script would be misplaced. Through the scheme ‘ oral documentation of history of tiatr’ we meet and interview aging tiatrists on video. They have a lot of information which would be lost if not documented. There is a scheme of ‘ documentation of tiatr through research work’ through which three books have been released. One book ‘ Konkani Gramophone Records’, brings out the importance behind the recording of Konkani songs on vinyl records right from the first song. ‘Mirmirancho Mog’ sang by Joao Agostinho in 1910 to the last song recorded in 1983.” Tiatr is a unique form of drama enjoyed by a huge population in Goa. TAG is trying to preserve the true form of tiatr. “ Our aim is to preserve the form of tiatr as it has music but it is not a musical, it has prose but it is not like most English or Marathi plays. The popular form of tiatr has 6- 7 acts where each act has four small songs, comedy linked with the story, songs in the form of solos, duets, trios and quartets which together brings out the uniqueness of tiatr. Tiatr is majority enjoyed by the Catholic community, however over the years, many non- catholics have also joined tiatrs to perform onstage or to handle the technical aspects backstage. ‘Mahanand’, a tiatr brought in a huge number of non- Catholics to watch the tiatr and there are people to witness tiatrs on a regular basis. There is a charm in watching a live performance and I don’t think, tiatr will be affected by CD and VCD productions.” TAG has a lot more goals to achieve. “ Although tiatr is popular, it has to have a standard and has to go on par with plays in other languages on a national level. TAG is working on a model tiatr and it is making efforts to involve children as they are the future of tiatr,” he concludes. http://www.epaperoheraldo.in/Details.aspx?id=3349boxid=153334437uid=dat=1%2f18%2f2012 Goanet A-C-E! [Goanet] Tiatrists 'raid' shops in old Goa, marcela
Tiatrists 'raid' shops in old Goa, marcela Pirated CDs handed over to police TEAM HERALD OLD GOA: It was a drama of a different kind, as a group of tiatr artistes raided two shops at Old Goa and Marcela on Wednesday and found 250 pirated CDs. A day after Mapusa Police seized 4,000 pirated CDs from a shop in Mapusa, the group of tiatrists, led by Francis de Tuem, found 100 pirated CDs in a shop at Old Goa and 150 pirated CDs in a shop at Marcela. The CDs picked up from the Old Goa shop were later handed over to the Old Goa police, while Anil Pednekar filed a police complaint against the shop owner. The group of tiatrists involved in the raid consisted of Neville Pereira, Luis Bachan, Willy Silveira, Mathew Araujo, Comedian Bryan, Socorro de St Cruz and Anseet. Police has booked a case under Copyright Act. We are barely able to break even when we launch our CDS. To make matters worse, pirated CDs lead to a further loss of our revenue, Francis de Tuem told Herald. Neville Pereira said: We come out with Konkani CDs because of our love for our mother tongue. But if pirated CDs are allowed to be distributed, it would destroy our interest in producing CDs. http://74.127.61.178/herald/Details.aspx?id=3084boxid=52644592uid=dat=12%2f23%2f2011 Goanet A-C-E! [Goanet] BOOKS: All for the love of His 'Mai Bhas'
All for the love of His 'Mai Bhas' It is indeed rare to find a person so patriotic and passionate, that he would sacrifice so much for his mother tongue. Brazinho Soares has an enviable collection (rather a treasure trove) of printed material in the Konkani language and has done much for this language in Romi script, especially as a writer and researcher. By Elvis Sequeira (Herald) If one comes across the short stature, thin built Brazinho Soares from St Cruz Tiswadi at the Shravani General Stores, in St Cruz market where he comes to buy his copy of the Herald every morning, one would not even give him a second look. But, deep within his unimposing physical frame and simple and unassuming nature is a great lover and collector of Konkani books, a tiatrist and a prolific writer of Konkani in the Romi script. Right from his childhood Brazinho spent a lot of time reading Konkani magazines, periodicals and novels called “ Romansi’ published in Romi script from Mumbai but were available in Goa. After reading the books, Brazinho would not sell them as ‘ raddi’ or throw them away, but would preserve each one of them with great care as something precious. What started initially as hobby, turned into a consuming passion and it soon overtook all his other likings when one of his poems was published in the weekly ‘ Aitarachem Vachop’ on February 9, 1958, by its Editor Fr Caitano Lobo who was the driving force behind Brazinho and encouraged him to write in Konkani. Since then he has collected more than 1300 Konkani books in Romi script, besides newspaper copies, Konkani novels, magazines and periodicals. Recalling an incident which took place way back in 1962, Brazinho reveals, “ I visited Mumbai in the year 1962. Initially it was planned as a two day trip, but turned out to be a month long stay as I spent all my money plus Rs 150 which I had borrowed from my relatives in Mumbai to buy every Konkani book that I could lay my hands on. In the end, I had no money to pay for the steamer ticket to return to Goa which at that time cost Rs 15, so I had to extend my stay in Mumbai till I could collect money to pay my return fare.” ‘ Gorvassi voiz’ a book on medicine for lay people and ‘ Bail’ published in 1917 are some of the oldest books in his collection. When asked which book he considers his prized possession, he names ‘ Historia de Goa’ and ‘ Gomantak’ written by Jose Manuel Pinto and published in 1915. The initial price of the book was Re1, but Brazinho had to shell out Rs 50 to add it to his collection. Brazinho not only collected books and periodicals, he also collected and preserved handbills of tiatrs printed on ordinary paper which in olden days were strewn from a moving car fitted with a loudspeaker to announce a tiatr. Today, he has a collection of over 1000 such handbills which provides us with an insight into tiatrs staged from the time it came into existence. When asked if he would ever sell or donate his collection to any Institution he says, “ I am very possessive about my books and as long as I am alive, I will not give them to anybody. Let my children decide what to do with them after I am gone.” Besides being a passionate book collector, Brazinho has contributed news reports, stories, poems and other articles to various Konkani publications besides publishing books on his own. He has won several awards and felicitations for his writings from various institutions including the government of Goa which conferred on him the State Award for Literature in the year 2006, his name also features in the book “ Who’s Who Of Indian Writers” of Sahitya Academy New Delhi as one of the best Konkani poets. Brazinho’s role as a tiatrist has not been widely acknowledged as he has mostly worked behind the scenes to ensure that a tiatr runs smoothly. He has written, directed and staged three tiatrs namely ‘ Mogacho xevott Ximeterint’ ‘ Konn To Khunni’ and ‘ Butanchem Ghor’. He has also acted in many tiatrs staged in the late 1960s. Brazinho concludes, “ Tiatr has improved a lot, in terms of stage setting, acting and other aspects, but still lacks in variety. As far as songs are concerned, tiatrists of today also need to have a proper dress code as many times they ( especially ladies) wear hi- fi dresses whilst enacting the house scenes, this looks out of place.” http://74.127.61.178/herald/Details.aspx?id=2789boxid=32949718uid=dat=12%2f16%2f2011 --- Protect Goa's natural beauty Support Goa's first Tiger Reserve Sign the petition at: http://www.goanet.org/petition/petition.php ---

[Goanet] 2nd edition of Goa Arts and Literary Festival
The 2nd Goa Arts and Literary Festival coincides with the 50th anniversary of Goa's liberation after 451 years of colonial rule. It is an opportunity to reflect on the idea of India as reflected through the perspective of cultures, communities and writers on the margins of the grand historical narrative of the country. There will be a particular emphasis on Diaspora, on the Goan and other Indian migrant communities across the world which retain different ideas about what being Indian means, as well as on the North-East of India and its art, music and literature. Music, painting and photography, poetry, journalism and publishing, debates, discussions and book-releases: from 17-21 December, the 2nd Goa Arts and Literary festival promises a truly historic cultural event of the highest standard, with delegates attending from around the world. In collaboration with Sahitya Academy, Goa Writers Group, Goa Konkani Akademi, Gomantak Marathi Akademi, Indian Ateliers, Heritage Jazz, Konkani Rocks, hindustimes.com, Planet Goa, Department of Tourism - Government of Goa and Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the 2nd annual Goa Arts and Literary Festival organised and hosted by The International Centre Goa will celebrate 50 years of democracy after decolonization, Goa's Golden Jubilee. The Festival will be held on 17-21 December, exactly 50 years after the historic days when Indian troops conquered, and annexed Goa. It was another dramatic moment in history for this tiny territory, which has experienced many. Each day of the Festival will recall 1961, featuring historians and witnesses to the sensational events as they occurred, as well as lectures, special book releases, and panel discussions about the Goan experience of the Estado da India, quite different from much of the rest of the subcontinent's experience with the British Raj. The 2011 Goa Arts and Literary Festival will celebrate creative excellence across India, with a special focus on Goa and its Diaspora. As with the inaugural edition, there will be prominent daily showcases for the best contemporary poetry from across India, and for the extraordinary writers and musicians of the North East. Events such as this Festival will be held annually so that the quality of the Festival is enriched and enhanced every year by involving more and more people and their ideas and the image of Goa in people’s mind is of a more vibrant cultural and intellectual destination. [Goanet] BOOK REVIEW: Taj Mahal Foxtrot (Naresh Fernandes) - reviewed by Sanjay Iyer
as harbingers of change. Naresh Fernandes chooses to let his historical narrative end as the rock ‘n’ roll bands take hold of the English-speaking elites in Bombay. ‘Foxtrot Bombay’ straddles an era of hope, madness, faith in free musicality and independence. Frank Fernand is long gone, and Micky Correa passed away in September 2011 at the age of 98. Jazz is no longer an abstraction in our globalised world. Bombay has become Mumbai, and the raucous jazzy sound of the reeds and brass has mostly vanished. Naresh Fernandes worries: “Contemporary Bombay is not only doing its best to choke the spaces in which the quirky and the eccentric can survive, it has also lost its ability to agree on a central melody. Taj Mahal Foxtrot is a gentle plea for a new score.” (ENDS) http://www.caravanmagazine.in/Story.aspx?StoryID=1190Page=1 Goanet A-C-E! The Xavier Centre of Historical Research presents History Hour The Awakening of the Indian Film Theory By Gaston Roberge, SJ DATE: November 30, 2011 TIME: 5:30pm VENUE: Xavier Centre of Historical Research, B B Borkar Road, Alto Porvorim, Goa www.xchr.in In this age of fierce globalization it is high time that we formulate 'The Indian Film Theory', a theory that informs the films that Gaston Roberge calls Indian folk-movies, seen and enjoyed more than once by millions of Indians over a long period of time. Roberge will discuss the reasons why that theory has not been formulated so far, the main reason being the class mentality. He proposes a pedagogy of the media oppressed comprising seven steps of self-education for liberation. Fr. Gaston Roberge SJ is an acclaimed media critic and film scholar. Having pursued an MA in Theatre Art (Film), University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Fr Roberge, in collaboration with Satyajit Ray, founded the Chitrabani — the only independent film library in Kolkata. He has authored several books and contributed with many articles to different publications on cinema. His book Communication Cinema Development: From Morosity to Hope won the National Award (special mention) at the 46th National Film Festival of India in 1999. Fr Gaston Roberge SJ continues to be senior most faculty member at the Department of Mass Communication and Videography at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. He said “His works are still fresh in my mind; it is almost ten years now.” He was speaking at an interactive session with writer, Margaret Mascarenhas during the inaugural photo exhibition on F N Souza by Ida Kar. The exhibition features portrait pictures of F N Souza and is being held at the Sunaparants Goa Centre of Arts, Altinho, Panaji. Recollecting the good old days, he added, “I met him in the year 1961, when I was still in the art college. The group he formed—Progressive Artists’ Group was made for survival.” Das further commented that FN Souza’s writing was like his paintings. “He wrote like a machine gun. He was a stalwart. There were many artists who could not stand him as he was outspoken and challenged people.” Speaking about his style of painting, Das mentioned that F N Souza devoted himself totally to art. “He could paint everyday. He used to spread the canvas on the floor and paint directly from the tube, and not from the palette” Das remembered. He also brought out the fact that now there are hundreds of fake F N Souza paintings, which are being exhibited at galleries. Prior to this interaction, Conor Macklin of Grosvenor Gallery, London, who has brought this travelling exhibition to Goa, spoke about Ida Kar and her works. The event was well attended by artists, writers and art lovers. http://www.navhindtimes.in/iwatch/exhibition-life-great-goan-artist Goanet A-C-E! Arts ~ Culture ~ Entertainment

[Goanet] COLUMN: Coast with the most
Coast with the most By Vivek Menezes Dive right in Ajey Patil’s love affair with the ocean began when he first ventured underseas, back in 1992. An experienced, PADI-certified diving instructor, Patil spent several years in the Andamans before returning to Goa, where he and his sister Amruta – the graphic novelist – grew up. Here the self-described “marine engineer, naturalist, and raconteur” set up his friendly, family-run dive shop and training centre in 2007. Over the years, Patil has distinguished himself as a patient, diligent diving instructor, who is particularly good with first-timers and younger students. People now fly into the state just to train with him. If you’ve already got your licence, we highly recommend Dive Goa’s overnight stay trips to tiny Netrani, or Pigeon Island, about 220km from Goa, off the coast of the pilgrim-site of Murudeshwar in Karnataka. Besides Lakshwadeep and the Andamans, Netrani offers the best underwater visibility on the coastline of India – and its coral reefs teem with barracuda, triggerfish, eels, groupers, wrasses and other gloriously-coloured creatures you usually see on the Discovery Channel. Dive Goa has options to suit all levels of interest, from advanced certification courses to an excellent one-day session called Discover Scuba Diving, which takes newbies (even non-swimmers!) via a thorough briefing to a pool trial, and then straight into the ocean for Rs. 3,000 per head. Dive Goa, O’Pescador Resort, Dona Paula (www.divegoa.com, 93250-30110, 93250-30109). Go-kartography Goa is about life in the slow lane, right? Well, there’s excitement for speed demons at a go-karting track that sprawls over 482 metres of South Goan countryside in Nuvem, near Margao. Racing enthusiasts can’t get enough: the track has hosted national championships for the past five years – even Narain Karthikeyan showed up to take a spin. The Nuvem track is the brainchild of Christopher Moraes, who has loved cars and racing since childhood. He’s turned out a real labour of love, which includes all kinds of professional detailing, such as designated pit lanes and cambered turns. Go-karting may be Formula 1 in miniature – smaller race cars whizzing around smaller tracks – but there’s nothing pint-sized about the thrills. These cars burn rubber, handle really well, and average more than 70kph on the tracks. Moraes has also kept the prices on the low side: the basic ten-lap package costs just Rs.180. He supplies hygiene caps and helmets as well as the vehicles, but you need to bring your own gloves if you want to go the full Schumacher. Go-Kart Racing, Nuvem, behind Tata Motors Showroom, off NH17 (0832- 275-7899). Ten laps Rs. 180. Crocodile hunters Among Goa’s most outstanding features is its sheer biodiversity. From the coastline up innumer-able waterways to the thick jungles that spill over its borders with Maharashtra and Karnataka, the state provides natural habitats for wild birds, animals and plants that have managed to elude the relentless march of mining, tourism and the real estate industry. One of the richest of these habitats is called the Cumbharjua canal, which connects the backwaters of the Zuari and Mandovi rivers along the eastern limits of Tiswadi, the ancient island that is capped by the state capital Panjim at its other end. Even though the waterway is easily accessible, from boats, using the Cortalim jetty just below the Zuari, tourists never seem to venture here. That’s a pity, because the Cumbharjua canal teems with amazing birdlife – you can spot 50 species in an afternoon including the rare Collared Kingfisher – and is also home to a large population of crocodiles, including the Indian Mugger. On a fine afternoon, take a boat up with Pankaj Lad, the bright and energetic young naturalist behind Canopy, an eco-tourism company that also offers other nature-related tours into the Goan hinterland. Canopy (www.canopygoa.com, 97642-61711, 97640-52225). Boat safari Rs. 1,000 per person. Snakes Alive! Since childhood, Rahul Alvares has had a special affinity with snakes. After he graduated from school, the son of environmental activists Norma and Claude Alvares trained at the Madras Crocodile Bank and soon emerged as one of Goa’s leading snake rescuers. Over the years, he’s captured, handled, and safely released hundreds of pythons, cobras, vipers and other snakes that proliferate in the lush countryside and very often cross into human terrain. Alvares is a multi-talented guy. He’s a top personal trainer, has written two books (the second, Call of the Snake, consists of stories about snake-catching), and also leads popular bird-watching trips all over the state. Most unusual, however is his Snake Watch, a herpetology orientation course. Alvares introduces his students to a variety of wild snakes and covers basic snake-handling, first-aid techniques, and a host of other “snake-y
[Goanet] When Art met Life
When Art met Life The festival that made Panjim feel cool about its heritage and its architectural vestige was undoubtedly the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts By Harshvardhan Bhatkuly News arrived that the deal for this year’s International Film Festival of India was inked out in Delhi. Many may assume that the city has begun to sport a spruced up look because of the IFFI. Although one cannot discount the fact that the IFFI did bring about a change in the way Panjim looks, but it surely was not where it all started. The festival that made Panjim feel cool about its heritage and its architectural vestige was undoubtedly the Fontainhas Festival of the Arts. By far the best time Panjim has had in one of its most charming locales. I was lucky to be a passive party to what could have become an important landmark in Goa’s tourism calendar. But fell prey to disinterest and later cynicism from the organizers, sponsors, residents and yes, the State. The first time round when the Fontainhas Festival was planned, it was as if the entire jigsaw was waiting to be pieced together. The organizers – Goa Heritage Action Group – was a group of very enthusiastic mix of professionals and heritage lovers. Goa had a ‘can-do, will-do’ Chief Minister in the form of Manohar Parrikar. The idea was simple – to focus on Panjim’s heritage by using Fontainhas as a backdrop. The draw was art and the medium were the houses of local residents. For the first time, people in Goa, or for that matter India, opened up their homes for other people to walk in. Art was hung and displayed in the living rooms of Fontainhas residents. People would walk in and appreciate the works, talk to artists and I can name at least a handful of artistic careers which have been the direct creation of this festival. That done, there would be music and live performances enacted in the public squares of Fontainhas. A brass band near Mary Immaculate High School, a ‘ divli naach’ near the fountain ( from which Fontainhas derives its name), Remo belting ‘ Maria Pitashe’ near Panjim Inn or Lorna singing ‘ Red Rose’ from the little ground opposite Antonio Sousa’s house. Add to all this, the essence of authentic Goan cuisine in the bylanes of Fontainhas. Mum’s Kitchen, Hotel Mandovi, Raanchikud and others would dish out mouthwatering wonders one after the other. It used to be a week full of art, music and good cheer. Where friends would meet in the evenings for a bite and a bit of music. Where children would get their poratraits in pencil drawn by students of the art college. Where decent deals for buying local art were cut, thus creating a whole new bunch of artistic pool in Goa. Was the festival successful? Hugely. Just go by how people have begun to restore old houses, not to mention the sudden demand for old ‘ Portuguese’ houses from cash- rich Delhiwallahs and their ilk. The objective of the Goa Heritage Action Group to disseminate information about our architectural and cultural heritage seemed to have been achieved. But then it was the job of the Tourism Department to latch on to such a wonderful property that could have ensured quality tourism for years to come. The one area where the organisers could have fared better was to create a bridge with the residents who not only had to open up their houses and literally compromise on their household privacy for a week or more, but who rightly or wrongly felt used by the authorities. What did they receive besides a fresh coat of paint? My gut feeling is that had they been offered centrestage to being trustees of the event, the Fontainhas Festival would have flourished and gone from strength to strength. This festival which was put together by the collective genius of a handful of people. Further testimony to a fact that the universe conspires to get things done when a few people have a larger interest of the society at heart. The Goa Heritage Action Group has always been blessed with people who mean well for Goa’s cultural and architectural heritage. Now the only missing link is the political will. Sure, the IFFI is a bigger event and draws the stars ( paid for, of course), but the Fontainhas Festival brought art and life of Panjim together. Could we have a once more?! [Goanet] Germany: Blend it like Wendell
Blend it like Wendell Jagmeeta Thind Joy Posted online: Wed Sep 14 2011, 00:01 hrs It is one of the world’s most acknowledged platform for players in the international organic movement. And each year, BioFach, held in Nuremberg, Germany, attracts around 2,500 exhibitors and thousands of visitors from 130 countries. While Indian exhibitors have been an intrinsic part of the four-day extravaganza in the past, the 2012 edition is going to be special as India has been chosen as the partner country. The star attraction of the Indian pavilion will be Goa-based designer Wendell Rodricks, whose work with natural fabrics and dyes has landed him an invitation to open the fair with a fashion show. “BioFach is a prestigious event and it’s an honour for me to be a part of it, especially in the India-special edition,” remarked Rodricks, who is currently putting together an all-organic collection for the show. The organic fabric he uses has unique properties — it’s anti-perspirant and provides protection against UV rays. Though organic food and agriculture are the other important aspects of the fair, eco-friendly fashion, points out Wendell, is much looked forward to. With ‘sustainability’ as this year’s theme, Rodricks is an apt choice. He’s arguably one of India’s first designer to go eco-chic, having started work with organic fabrics in the early 1990s. Today, he’s well-known for reviving the long-forgotten Kunbi sari of Goa. The Eco-Goa room in Wendell Rodricks Design Space offers garments made with all-organic elements and natural dyes sourced from the Western Ghats, which Rodricks helped restore along with a group of NGOs in Goa. “I have been asked to not only showcase my work with the weavers using natural fabrics and dyes, but also make a presentation on my Kunbi sari project,” he said. The Kunbi Tribe collection was first showcased at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week in 2010 and highlighted his work in empowering the out-of-work weavers. At BioFach 2012, it will be a perfect example of sustainability for the world to see. http://www.indianexpress.com/story-print/846184

[Goanet] Wendell Rodricks at Lakme Fashion Week 2011
Wendell Rodricks Inspired by and designed to reflect the fluidity and stillness of pure water, Wendell – master-of-resort wear- Rodricks’ collection was presented in four parts, each with a colour and theme. Beginning with white and ecru skirts and layered dresses with sheer organza coats, it proceeded to more fluid satin, in similar silhouettes, rendered sexier by the choice of fabric. Flared pajama-trousers and 1960’s tunics made an appearance as well. Moving on to rippled, textured fabric there was further play of sheer and opaque, with the addition of colours blue and pink. Fluid, dramatic shapes are the designer’s forte and they were present in plenty, though our wardrobe picks would be possibly limited to the basic white, full skirt with organza hem and the shoes: Lace-covered peep-toe booties.
