So far, we do not appear to be dealing with defective optimizations
with OPT(2), I browsed the program object and was able to
find BUBBA which leads me to believe that the optimizer is no longer removing
code that cannot be executed. (At least in this case.)
Is that a bug? I'll ask IBM and report back.

Hmm, remove the code but not the literal? That seems more trouble than it's
worth and to what end?
I could probably look at the pseudo assembler listing, but that's not my strong
suit.
What does it hurt? Well, if I wrote a COBOL program and the compiler reported
that a huge chunk of it

What are the conditions you set that the part will never be executed

To be clear, though, about the examples I posted - they were all program
objects (whether compiled COBOL 4 or 5) and stored in the same PDSE.

be executed is not being discarded as it was in
COBOL 4.2. So, there's no message about it because the compiler is no longer
doing what it used to do. We intend to open a PMR in the morning and see what
response that yields.

Has anyone already opened a PMR for this issue? (I searched but didn't find
one)

They've been predicting that for close to 20 years now, I think.

I'm confused by your references to the manual paper feed and tray 2. You said
there are three paper sources, so if tray 3 and tray 4 are two of them, the
third one is either the manual feed or tray 2 - or are they one and the same?
