Kurt,
  Are your entry into building the configuration and workflows, you make some 
assumptions.

I used a MODEL for then I had to update all my file names to my ZOS31 names and 
volumes.

Then we get to the catalog screen, by default it seems you expect/want (maybe) 
everything cataloged, because that was the default of YES.

The jobs that then get generated and IDCAMS ALTERs from SYS1.*.# names to 
SYS1.* names which cause a conflict with my running system names.

The way I got around this was to specify DO NOT CATALOG, this then generated, 
every job I needed to IEHPROGM RENAMES and cleanup OLD .# NAMES.

But now because I don’t want to re-run all the load jobs again, I am locked out 
of the workflows, because NOW I get duplicate datasets issues.

If a data set with that name is already cataloged, then z/OSMF should have 
displayed an error and not generated that deployment JCL.  Off hand I don't 
know why your situation causes this, but please either open a case with IBM 
support, or reach out to me directly, to get to the bottom of it.

If a data set with that name is already cataloged, then z/OSMF should have

Yeah I am going back to my initial impression.  Z/OSMF for software installs is 
garbage.

I had to go back and say DO NOT CATALOG my new ZOS31 datasets.

This then generated all my IEHPROGM jobs to rename every file allocated.

It also generated all the cleanup jobs.

But unless I rerun everything again I cant get to the WORKFLOWS, so I guess I 
will find issues on the fly.

IBM needs a way to read the CPAC.ZOS31.WORKFLOWS dataset and generate a usable 
readable workflow.

The only thing IBM seems to be missing is what are the NEW files in z/OS 3.1 
that don’t exist in z/OS 2.5, they must assume you will always generate a NEW 
Master catalog.

I have not had to do that in over 15 years, still have all my jobs, but useless 
work when upgrading software

to force z/OS installs with it.  I have now installed my 22nd z/OS install with 
z/OSMF, (hundreds with Serverpak) and I can tell you that It has gone 
increasingly downhill over especially the past year or so.  The ability to 
change values (dataset sizes and other attributes) has gone from limited, to 
okay back to limited again.

It's not a "bad" way to install, but it's not as flexible as serverpak and it 
doesn't seem to get any better over time, every new install seems to take a 
small step backwards.  Sending in problem reports about the issues seems to be 
totally ignored.  Especially if you tell IBM about the problem and then also 
give them a work-around.  The attitude seems to be, "well, if you got around 
it, then why is it a problem?"

Okay so riddle me this with IBM's new approach to software installs.

So to load the software they allocate everything with a .# on the end of the 
names, So SYS1.LINKLIB.#, etc...

All the jobs to load all files have completed and ZFS's are now loaded.

I now want my end names to be SYS1.xx

In job IZUD04RN, they try to alter the name which is failing for me because the 
end name is already cataloged.

The old serverpac use to do IEHPROGM, then do the idcams Define for indirect 
cataloging, etc.

So how is this supposed to work now?

Ok, so I will speak out to my positive experiences….

I’m personally not in favor of a GUI for the sake of a GUI without bringing 
advantages to the table.   But I have become a ZOSMF fan more recently.

Serverpac – On the ISPF panels, old process, I could have the entire process 
laid down, and complete in less than a day, that is massaging the new config by 
merging the prior, and then doing the customizations.  Did zOS 3.1 Serverpac on 
z/OSMF and that process even got more simple.   Yea, took a bit of time to get 
used to the workflows, but it really was good.  Still took about half a day, 
mostly because the jobs to load the datasets just takes a long time, but it was 
easy.   Did I have to adapt?  Sure, but I’m not that stuck in my ways to not 
adapt to a new process.

ZCX management – provisioning, upgrading, etc – Once you put your local values 
in, you click go, and it’s done in like 10 minutes.   There is no way I’d want 
to do what that workflow does manually.  We are running a Rocket Terminal 
Emulator – Web in a 6 node cluster to get our feet wet.I am playing with 
Omegamon TEPS in ZCX cluster.   When IBM releases a docker version of Omegamon 
TEMS, then we’ll move both the TEMS and TEPS off of the AIX box its running on 
today.

Network Configuration assistant for Policy agent – very nice cannot live 
without.

What I *wish* IBM would adopt?   All of these other IBM products that make you 
install/maintain an entirely separate product to provide their GUI interfaces 
should be building ZOSMF plug-in’s.   Im talking about TWS dynamic workload 
console, GDPS Gui interface, Omegamon TEPS, IBM Storage insights, etc

Especially frustrating (at least in our shop) is when a mainframe based tool 
needs a Windows or Linux server instance to complete the installation.   The 
amount of red-tape to get something provisioned is extremely heavy.   This is 
part of the reason I personally have been getting educated in ZCX and docker 
containers.   If I can put up a container on my machine, and maintain it as 
part of our infrastructure, its way less headaches.

Anyway my opinion, FWIW.

Actually I don't mind z/OSMF now, but just like the infancy of serverpac, like 
originally not allowing dataset name changes on what were deemed IPL datasets 
and other changes I needed for my shop, IBM cant assume everything works as 
their test environment does or that space is unlimited.

If they decide not be flexible, so be it, I can edit the JCL and have my work 
around like before.

zOSMF - Installing z/OS 3.1 Observations

So this is my first real time using zOSMF for a software installation.  So I 
have a few complaints.

First No SSA is being used, IBM decided to tack on a .# to every dataset, HATE 
this and I modified it.

I have SMS rules already defined for SYS1SSA, so I changed my configuration 
layout to my SYS1 datasets are now SYS1SSA.SYS1.

This allowed my already setup SMS rules to function.

NEXT they don’t allow an already added defined ZFS for workdir to be used, they 
wanted to allocate at 14451 cylinder dataset. Not going to happen.

I already have 2 full MOD-27 defined for SMPNTS and UNZIP space.

So I edited the BUILT JCL and deleted every place they tried to define and use 
/tmp and pointed to my already defined work space!

And my jobs are happily running now..

Thank you.
Your VIPA conversion is correct. I just tested on my Test LPAR.

According to IBM IUTSAMEH can stay were it in the TCPIP parms definition
and it will not be required by V3.1 TCP/ip to be converted. And yes, it
apparently do get defined by VTAM automagically by specifying IPCONFIG
DYNAMICXCF. I am going to leave it right where it is for now.

Finally, yes we do have the OSA defined also. I converted that to:
INTERFACE OSAL8000

  DEFINE IPAQENET

  IPADDR 10.64.14.68/24

  PORTNAME OSA8000

  NONROUTER

  DEFINE VIRTUAL
  IPADDR 10.64.14.106

That is basically all we have.  I don't think VIPA's have port names.  I 
thought portnames were used to map to TRLE definition in VTAM.

For IUTSAMEH, I thought this was automatically created by VTAM.  I know we 
don't have a INTERFACE definition for it and from old copies of our 
pre-INTERFACE definitions we never defined IUTSAMEH at all.

For the issue with OSA8100, are you sure you have that defined in VTAM?

The manual mentions how to convert VIPA as well. One minor "gotcha" is that we 
had AUTORESTART on our DEVICE statement and that isn't supported in the 
INTERFACE statement so we had to strip it.

We're currently going thru the same migration.  IP configuration guide has a 
section on converting DEVICE/LINK to INTERFACE statements.  It is actually a 
pretty good cookbook for it.  

We don't use VIPA but IIRC there's a sub section in the book about how to 
convert VIPA links.

We're currently going thru the same migration.  IP configuration guide has a 
section on converting DEVICE/LINK to INTERFACE statements.  It is actually a 
pretty good cookbook for it.  

We don't use VIPA but IIRC there's a sub section in the book about how to 
convert VIPA links.

I haven’t used it but from reading the brief docs EzNoSQL is a z/OS 
implementation of a key/value JSON document store that uses VSAM KSDS as the 
store. It’s similar to MongoDB or SAP HANA in functionality which are both 
hugely popular on distributed systems. The marketing materials mention using 
Sysplex for consistency and performance. MongoDB, Aerospike, SAP HANA etc all 
have huge in-memory caches for scalability. EzNoSQL uses Sysplex services to 
implement a straight-through cache and persistent storage that can scale 
horizontally. IBM makes a point of stating that there are no programming 
requirements to handle eventual consistency which can be an issue with 
distributed systems that adhere to the CAP theorem.

I think the better question is why does EzNoSQL require RLS? Probably makes it 
easier because they don't have to handle different sharing issues, but it seems 
possible that some might be interested in using the EzNoSQL API from a single 
task without sharing implications. Of course I don't know how interested people 
are in general in EzNoSQL.

Yes, I was thinking along the same lines.  It seems a shame to force such a 
significant cost associated with ICFs on users who only want to "move with the 
times".

Also, given it's just SMF data being used here, surely there's a way for z/OS 
to process that without VSAM RLS and EzNoSQL (?).  Perhaps they are using 
"ported" code, i.e. not native to z/OS, for the AI inferencing part and hence 
must have EzNoSQL and thus VSAM RLS.

Agreed, this is the stumbling block that many smaller clients face, apart from 
the cost of the capacity required, be it ICF or CP.  It is an onerous task for 
many, but perhaps there is now an impetus to do it where there wasn't 
previously.

AI System Services on z/OS 3.1 - is a CF really mandatory?

Hi everyone,

it seems from the manual linked to below that you must have a CF to run EzNoSQL 
in order to use the new AI Framework feature of z/OS 3.1, for example to have 
AI-powered WLM batch initiators which is the first use case given.  Most of my 
customers would baulk at spending for ICFs, so this is a real blow if it's 
actually the case.

Is it really true that you must have a CF for AI on z/OS 3.1?  Say it ain't so, 
IBM, please!

Most likely security. Hard symlinks use inode bypassing the original file/path 
auth. Additionally, deleting the original file leaves the file available thru 
the hardlink potentially referencing outdated data. Softlink redirects the file 
to another location with authorization that is not always apparent. As for 
silly restriction, you'll need to decide for yourself.

If this is the sort of link that lets someone define a sort of shortcut with
one name that points to a file with a completely different name, but
doesn't clearly indicate that (in File Explorer for example) ... then it's
surely something that malware would be likely to do to disguise its
elements.

Bear in mind that Windows already defaults to not showing file 
extensions in File Explorer - lunacy in my view.

So it's probably to protect naive users.

That would have been very helpful - there should also be a reference to z/os 
3.1 rather than just the 2.5 PTFs . A mention in the PSP bucket for z/os 3.1 
would have been more helpful - my first thought of course when my first IPL 
failed was ‘what have I done wrong’ and part of the investigation was to make 
sure that I had not missed anything that I should have read and eventually I 
started searching on IBM Support.

use to build the nucleus.  The changed channel program is used regardless of 
whether you are doing
a validated boot or not.  z/VM minidisk caching screws up while emulating the 
channel program.   Last
I talked to the z/VM developers, they still had not figured out what the bug 
is.  As long as minidisk caching (MDC)
is turned off for at least the z/OS IPL device minidisk, the channel program 
will be executed by the I/O subsystem, 
which executes it correctly.  The problem only occurs when you are IPLing z/OS 
from a minidisk to which you
have LINKed (or is in your VM directory), with MDC enabled for that minidisk.  
If you instead ATTACH the device to
the VM user, the problem will also not occur, since it is not being treated as 
a minidisk in that case.

In the past I've used a small utility named SilentCMD which suppresses
those briefly-opening cmd.exe terminal windows.

I found it especially useful for commands run from the Windows task
scheduler & commands run before & after profiles run by a backup
utility where the annoying flash of a briefly opened window would 
happen at unpredictable moments.

Despite the comments which suggest it's just for running .bat or .cmd
files I often used it for running ooRexx execs ie my first argument was
often "rexx.exe".

My old notes suggest that rexxhide.exe (meant to run an exec without
a console window) didn't work properly (though I don't remember 
precisely how, nor which version of ooRexx that was with) when the
exec was started by the task scheduler, but that using SilentCMD.exe
solved that.

There's also a forked version that apparently supports use with 
Powershell or Python scripts, & makes changes to logging & use of

then change the shortcut to run minimized.

Have you thought about generating a word document with hyperlinks to each of 
the manuals without path. Save the word document as a PDF in the same directory 
as the manuals.

I'm not interested in messing with somebody's environment variables. 
That would scare people too I think.


Yes there's a reason not to rename:  The manuals have internal links to 
each other which reference the original IBM filename.

make things better or probably worse?

At some point Windows invented "symbolic links" ("mklink command", which
inexplicably requires admin privilege!?) and are yet different from POSIX
symbolic links.  go figger.

I've had no problem with symbolic links on my desktop systems.

POSIX rules!

Maybe, but it doesn't work for me on Win 10:

Currently my VBS script creates links like this depending on what 
directory you are in when you run the script (pwd):

Are the metadata extensible?  In one 3.1 publication I see:

It turns out that the setting is locked to download. Given that, I'll look at 
constructing shortcuts. Can windows shortcuts use relative paths?

I wish that IBM would include not only the exact title in PDF metadata but also 
the forms code.

Otherwise, in the 3.1 PDF metadata I see such as:
Title:   z/OS: z/OS Using REXX and z/OS UNIX System Services
Title:   z/OS: z/OS C Curses
Title:   z/OS: z/OS C/C++ Runtime Library Reference
...
Too many "z/OS: z/OS" for convenient searches.  If IBM were to argue that
PDF metadata aren't a user interface, I'd counter by saying they supply them
to users.  Titles in the metadata should match those on document covers.

TARGET=_blank will open open a new tab MS Edge. Since a download is occurring, 
the new tab serves no purpose and should either close or not be opened.

W11 will come with MS Edge. This is the replacement for MS IE. Using the open 
source Chromium eliminates a lot of work for MS. From experience, Chrome 
provides extra security that is not included in Chromium.

My guess is that MS Edge setting "Always download PDF files" has been turned 
on.   SETTINGS -> Cookies and site permissions -> PDF documents

MS Edge and Chrome are the same basic browsers. In fact, most browser use the 
same base browser code and tailor it to look unique. The base code is called 
Chromium located at chromium.org which was written by Google.

I figured out my problem with getting Tom's process to work.  My folders are 
all set as ReadOnly because OneDrive was running.  I ended Onedrive and while 
all the folders still show as readonly, they aren't really any more and the 
process ran fine, after which I turned OneDrive on again.

I finally remembered that I had to do this last time as well.  This time I made 
a note so that I don't have to look dumb (again).

Won't that be up to your employer?

In the TOC.htm file I see:
1.Open your file explorer to the subdirectory where you extracted this 
collection.

2.Look for a file with the ".pdx" extension. If your subdirectory is 
sorted alphabetically by name, the ".pdx" file is near the bottom of the list 
of files.

3.Right mouse click on the file with the ".pdx" extension and you 
should receive a prompt to "Open with". Select "Adobe Acrobat Reader DC".

Line 2 should be made an anchor to the .pdx.

I use Chrome as my browser on Windows but thought I'd try Edge (something I
haven't tried for months).

I opened the index html (read me 1st) and clicked on a link for a pub and it
did 'download' the pub even though is it local.

Seems like an issue with Edge but not sure how to fix it - just confirming.

Well, I said "today" but it's now 8 minutes after midnight so I missed 
it by that much.  The IBM index file was changed again so my old code 
needed to be pretty-much redone.  It seems to work ok for me, creating 
directories and shortcuts.  It also creates a new file index.html which 
is a simpler version of the ibm browser index, with links on the titles 
so you don't have to tediously move the mouse over to the right to 
select something.

There are several oversights here:

o I suspect the move the .pdf files from a rendering platform
  to another repository without preserving timestamps.

o The zip utility marks content with time of zip, not file timestamp.

o Windows has historically foolishly preferred local times
  rather than Universal.

I wrote a script that uses the "pdfinfo" freeware to extract pdf
timestamps and touch file times accordingly.

by 2.5: the anchors are inconveniently far away to the right.  Better would

I concur, they have updated the contents of the 1Gb+ zip file to include the 
missing TOC file(s) without changing the external file name, but all the files 
inside are now dated 2023-10-09 instead of 2023-09-29, including the new TOC 
files.

I DL’d that same file on Friday 10/2 and it did NOT have the TOC files present.

I guess they actually listened!

That zip archive contains no .htm[l] file.  Where should I look for the .htm[l]?

A similar zip archive for 2.5 contains an index.html which works splendidly
against local files at the 2.5 release.

Using an older .html against the current release is shortsighted because
it won't track new documents.

I have a WiP script that contains nicely named symlinks (no shelves).

This is what I did to get a working html and posted here

Since the 3.1 collection does not have the html file like the 2.5 collections 
(and prior) did there is a workable solution:

1. Download the 3.1 collection
2. copy from your 2.5 collection directory the 1.read_me... file and 
subdirectory into the 3.1 directory
3. Rename them from v2r5 o v3r1
4. Edit the htm file and change 2.5 to 3.1 and v2r5 to v3r1
5. save it and your good to go

Caveats - any new products/pubs that are new to 3.1 won't be there (e.g. AI, 
DSFS wasn't there, and probably more).

This process does not change the order number for the pubs but will fix the url 
for the related pdf.

Ymmv but probably not by much

And I'm not just looking for manual titles.  I'm also looking for the 
product grouping that used to be in the html file.

I downloaded it to /downloads/zos 3.1 docs, then extracted it into the same 
folder.
You can put it wherever it makes sense to you. Having downloaded it, open 
zOS310-GA-Indexed-PDF-package-(2023-09-29).pdx with Adobe reader. It is the 
only .pdx file in the collection.

I downloaded it to /downloads/zos 3.1 docs, then extracted it into the same 
folder. 
You can put it wherever it makes sense to you. Having downloaded it, open 
zOS310-GA-Indexed-PDF-package-(2023-09-29).pdx with Adobe reader. It is the 
only .pdx file in the collection.

that years ago.
