You need to be fully aware when sending out notifications in response to detecting email viruses as you cause even more traffic and most if it unwanted and unnecessary. If sending out notifications ensure that it's in response to a virus that doesn't forge the sender otherwise you deserve to get

Has anybody ever tried putting an apache web server in front of IMail as an inbound proxy... I'd bet it would virtually eliminate loads due to attacks and would do a great job caching the graphics... I haven't had a chance to try it yet - but that doesn't mean somebody else hasn't already done so.
