Re: [JAWS-Users] skype

2009-07-16 Thread Van Der Walt Riana
Hello David,

You don't have to remove earlier versions and you can even update from
within your presently installed skype's update menu option.

The advantage not to uninstall previous version first, is that all your
present skype settings, or almost all, are transferred as is and you
don't have to re-enter your profile.

However, I still find 3.8 less cumbersome to use than version 4, even
with the scripts and scripts are also out for 4.1, but the last time I
heard, 4.1 was still a beta, although improved on version 4.

On the skype topic, can someone please indicate, using jaws 9 and/or 10,
how to hide call and chat history from showing and also how to enable it
when necessary? I preferably want to do this in version 3.8, but tips
to accomplish it in version 4 would also be welcome.

Thanks and regards

Riana

You probably hit the control/alt key immediately to the right of the space
bar at the same time as the letter I.

ctrl/alt + I toggles between insert and overtype modes so hitting the same
key combination should switch you back. Jaws normally announces this
change, although it might not in some verbosity settings.

Hope that helps all the best,

Hi list,
today I was typing up something in MS word 2003. After having been typing
for a while, I had something odd happen. Instead of any texts I began
typing, being inserted infront of the character I was typing at. It
deleted that character and replaced it with the one I just typed. Years
ago, this used to be referred to as type over mode. I didn't even know it
still existed. I have no idea how I turned it on. But how do I turn it
off, and get it back to inserting the character I type, rather than
typing over any existing text?

I am using XP home, Jaws 10 and Ms word 2003 like I said.

Thanks Jason

2009-07-16 Thread Chris Hallsworth
You can install the upgrade over XP so long as the copy of XP is genuine.
This won't apply for the EU since their copies will have an E at the end,
meaning no internet browser, so the option to upgrade will be disabled in
all cases. In all cases! You'll have to do a clean install since there's no
upgrade path from XP.

Hello John,

For some reason, Microsoft didn't include showing total size of a folder
on the status bar in Vista like it was shown in XP. There are a couple
things you can do. Perhaps the easiest is to select all while in the list
of files and then read the status bar. It is an extra step and you have
to be careful of course when selecting all files, but the status bar does
give total folder size when you select all files, which you can do with
CTRL+A. The other thing that can be done is to turn on the mouse tips in
folder options. You can do this by opening the control panel and typing
in folder options in the search box (without the quotes). Use tab key
until you find the folder options choice and press enter key. Move to
the view page of the dialog by using CTRL+Tab key. Use tab key into the
list of options. use down arrow in the list to the display file size
information in folder tips choice and make sure it is checked. use
spacebar to check it if it isn't checked and then OK out of dialogs.
While in the music folder bring up the JAWS configuration manager by using
JAWS key with 6. Go into settings menu by using Alt+S and arrow down to
verbosity settings. Press enter key to open the verbosity settings. Tab
to the beginner settings and press enter key. In the list of options use
end key to move to the bottom of the list. Use spacebar on the choice for
announcing tool tips. Tab to and use apply or OK button until out of the
dialog box. Use CTRL+S to save changes. When this is done you will hear
the tool tips as you move over subfolders in the music folder. You will
need to use backspace and arrow up or down across the music folder to hear
its size. However, when you open the music folder you should hear folder
size for the subfolders and files as you move up and down the list with
arrow keys. Sometimes after moving on to an item with the arrow keys
there is a slight delay until the tooltip is spoken.

Take care.

A few months ago I switched from XP to Vista, and thought I had imported

in it, when I do an insert3, I hear the number of files in the folder, and
free space remaining on the disc, but not the total sise of the folder,
which I like to know prior to burning this to a cd. If I select one of
the mp3 files , I do get the size of that specific file. I have made
sure the file size in the view tab of the folder options menu is checked
for the folder, as well as the file size in the choose details option in
the view menu.On XP I would get a total size for the folder as well as
each specific file in the status bar. Any idea what I have done wrong?
Thanks in advance.

Totally agree. XP was much easier to use and many more useful features than
vista. Also note if you have some older scanners software etc there may not
be aa driver upgrade. This happened to me with a perfectly good 4 year old
HP scanner, which was not supported for vista by HP. I suspect this may
happen with 7.1 as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista

2009-07-16 Thread Elaine

hi

it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with.

I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed. So was
left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on with it, or
don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than have no
computer. *smiles*

I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a new
machine any way.

yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways, exactly the
same.

you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues.

windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the latter
then you sure can use the former.

I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP.

I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a look at
the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and how to
manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are etc.

so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people when they
say don't upgrade, it's not accessible

load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression.

what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try it out
as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently have. and, you
might like it.

I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention.

I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I am not
pointing any fingers here.

my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions?

why do you want to upgrade?

Thanks

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista

2009-07-16 Thread Stewart A Overbey Jr.
David, and all,

I truly appreciate your comments. I am glad to hear, at least one
person suggest the upgrade. I have used it with JAWS, when trouble
shooting friends computers, and found it accessible if not
cumbersome.. I'm sure It wouldn't be so once I learned to use it, but
I have a great computer, and am not in the market for a new computer.

I was considering, and still am, the upgrade, so that when Windows 7
comes out, I will be able to upgrade more easily.

With Microsoft's track record for releasing operating systems
prematurely, I believe I'll wait for a year after windows 7 is out to
consider upgrading.

Thanks again all!

ah. I have like 2 gigs and it's only using 50% of it normally. That of
course changes if I start virtualBox and load something interesting in
there, then it gets to around 80% or so. Still though, would that be enough
to make it break?

2009-07-16 Thread tim
it has much better security and if you max out the ram. it runs like
a top. you can really tell when its a vista problem and when its a
jaws problem.
Ben running it for a year now and wouldn't go back to xp for
anything. jaws crashed to much and trying to recover was always a
reboot. Not with vista!
Those that don't like it mostly use it with 1 gig of ram, and that
worked fine for xp, but vista is not and I repeat not xp!

Re: [JAWS-Users] folder options in vista

2009-07-16 Thread tim
Turn tool tips on in the jaws verbosity settings and you get that
info as you arrow down through the folders. it also works for files.

At 01:54 AM 7/16/2009, you wrote:

Hello John,

For some reason, Microsoft didn't include showing total size of a
folder on the status bar in Vista like it was shown in XP. There
are a couple things you can do. Perhaps the easiest is to select
all while in the list of files and then read the status bar. It is
an extra step and you have to be careful of course when selecting
all files, but the status bar does give total folder size when you
select all files, which you can do with CTRL+A. The other thing that
can be done is to turn on the mouse tips in folder options. You can
do this by opening the control panel and typing in folder options
in the search box (without the quotes). Use tab key until you find
the folder options choice and press enter key. Move to the view
page of the dialog by using CTRL+Tab key. Use tab key into the list
of options. use down arrow in the list to the display file size
information in folder tips choice and make sure it is checked. use
spacebar to check it if it isn't checked and then OK out of
dialogs. While in the music folder bring up the JAWS configuration
manager by using JAWS key with 6. Go into settings menu by using
Alt+S and arrow down to verbosity settings. Press enter key to open
the verbosity settings. Tab to the beginner settings and press
enter key. In the list of options use end key to move to the bottom
of the list. Use spacebar on the choice for announcing tool
tips. Tab to and use apply or OK button until out of the dialog
box. Use CTRL+S to save changes. When this is done you will hear
the tool tips as you move over subfolders in the music folder. You
will need to use backspace and arrow up or down across the music
folder to hear its size. However, when you open the music folder
you should hear folder size for the subfolders and files as you move
up and down the list with arrow keys. Sometimes after moving on to
an item with the arrow keys there is a slight delay until the
tooltip is spoken.

Take care.

Hello Ann,

I can't b sure, but from what it sounds like, while you were routing PC to
Jaws, you probably accidently hit the right mouse button instead by
pressing
the insert key and the right mouse button, which is located just to the
left
of the minus key which is what you use in conjunction with the insert key
to

switch back and forth between the PC and JAWS cursors. What you probably
heard the computer say, was right button locked; so, all you have to do,
is press the insert key and the right mouse button again and it will say:
Right button unlocked and you're good to go.

Hope this helps.

Can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to Vista from XPPro? What are
advantages, enhanced features, ETC.

Thanks,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Vista

2009-07-16 Thread Sarah anson

Hi, Sarah again!
I think if someone already has a computer with xp they should keep it. I
would have got xp if it didn't cost so much more then vista. If I already
had an xp computer, I wouldn't have upgraded, but since I had to, and didn't
have the extra then obviously I had not much choice because I needed a
computer before windows seven releases. Anyways, Vista doesn't seem as bad
as people make it sound, as I wrote in my last email, but I also think that
I would keep xp if I had it and only upgrade to vista if I was buying a new
machine.

Hi Elaine!! Its like you took the words right out of my mouth!! I just
upgraded the other day to vista and got my new 1545. I was also scared out
of upgrading because some people told me bad things too. I agree, you have
to upgrade and get on with it. Vista isn't so bad. It like you said isn't
much different from xp. It is kinda slower, but you get used to it. Just
have a little patience.

Not trying to offend anyone either!

hi

it depends on why you where thinking of it to begin with.

I had to buy a new pc couple days ago because my xp machine crashed. So
was left with two choices, buy a new computer with vista and get on with
it, or don't have a computer. might as well chop my arms off than have
no computer. *smiles*

I figured might as well get used to vista since I had to purchase a new
machine any way.

yes, I'll agree vista is different to xp, but in a lot of ways, exactly
the same.

you still have a desktop, you still have email, you still have menues.

windows mail was outlook express, but honestly if you could use the
latter then you sure can use the former.

I.E is version 7 so that the same as XP.

I would strongly recommend anyone wishing to go for vista, takes a look
at the daisy files from freedom scientific. it does explain a lot and how
to manage the new layout of the desktop, what the vista gadgets are etc.

so meaning no di respect to anyone, I totally disagree with people when
they say don't upgrade, it's not accessible

load of rubbish and gives a total wrong impression.

what is good for one might not work for another, but I would say try it
out as you might find it is easier to use than what you currently have.
and, you might like it.

I'm sorry if this upset anyone, this was not my intention.

I for one was scared off from upgrading by the so called experts I am
not pointing any fingers here.

my last comments here are, ask yourself your own questions?

why do you want to upgrade?

Thanks

Elaine

2009-07-16 Thread Victor
Hi David,

I'm sorry, but this is rather unfair of you.

You cannot simply say that this is your opinion and not justify it by not
telling us why we shouldn't upgrade, I think it's just plain irresponsible,
but that's just my opinion. Smile.

In any case, seeing as how you're the owner of this list and it's sister
website and accompanying list, Blind Computing, your opinion holds quite a
bit of weight on this and the other list, so I think I, and many of others
on this list would like to know why the owner of the Jaws users list is
vehemently opposing the upgrade to Windows Vista.
