Re: [JAWS-Users] Using JAWS OCR

Very much appreciated, Rebecca. I’m glad this is possible. I had actually
looked at the FS site about their Openbook program, although I’ve been a K1000
user for a very, very very long time. But it looks like OB doesn’t run
under win-10 based on what I saw, which would be a show stopper for sure for me.

There have been several questions about OCR and saving the scanned results.
This is what I did. This is a bit detailed, so delete as you please.
Smile.

I'm using Windows 10 1709 Creator update, Jaws 2018 and Word 2010.

I have several image files saved so was able to test using these formats"
PDF and JPG.

Rather than first opening the PDF file, waiting for the

"alert, empty document,"

message, and then scanning with the layered keystrokes, insert-spacebar, o,
then d,

with the PDF file selected in a folder in Documents, I used the context menu
key, also known as the application key, and arrowed down to

Recognize with JAWS.

I pressed enter and after a second or two, JAWS said

Started.

The scanned information was there to read. I was able to select and copy it
with the usual Windows commands, either shift-down arrow to select, or
control a, to select all, and control c to copy.

I then pasted the results into Word, and there it was, to be saved as usual.
I did not try to save in Notepad, assuming that if all worked in Word,
notepad would be no different.

As to the second format, a print letter with an embedded picture, scanned
in Kurzweil and saved as a JPG image, it worked a bit different.

All went the same until I pasted the copied information into Word. Again, I
used the context menu key on the file name to arrow to

Recognize with JAWS.

I was told that the image was right-side up, and there was the text waiting
to be read. But when I copied and pasted it into Word, Word was not happy,
smile, and kept giving me information about

non-uniform tables, row and column information. Rather than playing with my
table settings in the JAWS quick settings menu, I figured notepad might be a
better option in this case.

When I pasted the same copied results into notepad, the file read as it had
when scanned by JAWS.

At this point, just because I prefer saving in Word, I reselected the
information in notepad, copied it, and pasted it into Word. Word was no
longer cross, muttering about tables, so all was well.

For those who have made it to the end, HTH. Smile.

Thanks, Rick. The choice, if you don’t want the basic client, seems to be
between Outlook and T-bird. Having used neither, I was frankly hoping the basic
Win ten email would do it for me, but might have to look into these other
possibilities.

Hi Rick,
I might have solved my problem by taking sent mail out of my favorites. When
jaws told me I was in the Messages list, I thought I was in my inbox,

list with some sort of combined deal where sent mail was showing up along

I was hoping that it would also turn off the space marker even though it did
not say it. So here is something else you can try. Use the Microsoft Word
command Control+Shift+* (NOTE - the * is the 8 on the number row. Because
you are using the Shift, they are referring to it as *). This command
toggles the Formatting marks on and off. When I was in a MS-Word doc, I
turned on the JAWS Keyboard Help and tested out Control+Shift+*. Much to my
surprise JAWS regocnizes it as the command for Non-Printing Characters On &
Off. JAWS says 8 instead of *. Apparently, this command is not available

sense.

If you are hearing things like paragraph and space marker being announced,
it is an editing feature that you have to turn off. Trying doing the
following:

1. Open JAWS Quick Menu with Insert+v

Hi Rick, I don’t have my scanner connected to this new PC yet, nor do I have

thinking about it. Anyway, I always like to sort of know what I’m getting into.
That’s why I read the help, and since it didn’t say anything at all in the help
about saving text, I was wondering if it was possible. I haven’t seen the

Hi Mary,
I don't have the Mail app for Windows 10, so I can't say for sure,
but, perhaps there is a setting in the app like the IOS mail app that is set
to carbon copy you on every sent message.
From past experience, I know that the Windows 10 app doesn't sport the same
flexibility in options as other e-mail clients.

I hope this is not off topic. I’m using the above named program with Jaws
2018. On my old Windows xp machine with its equally old email client, this
account was set to pop3. That’s all the old email program supported. There
was a setting in that email client that allowed me to delete messages from
the server once they had been downloaded. I know that with gmail on my
phone, I have the option of archiving deleted messages or permanently
deleting them after, I think it is 30 days. I can’t find anything like that
in the windows 10 mail app, which, I guess, means that deleted messages are
going to stay on the server forever, which is not at all what I want. If
there is a setting like what I have described in this app, where is it and
how do I get to it?

Also, I am seeing all of the emails I sent showing up in my messages list in
the inbox in the mail app. That never happened on my xp machine, and it does
not happen in any mail account I have on my phone, and it is not something I
want. I don’t mind a separate sent mail folder, but I sure don’t want to see
what I send in my inbox. How can I make this stop? Thanks in advance for any
help.

Mary

process if a pdf file was the source of the original images or if you have
scanned a number of pages using a scanner or the pearl camera. The help
section did say you lose the text that was acquired from an onscreen image
from things like controls or a set up screen for an app once you move to a
different screen. But I was hoping that in other cases, it might be possible
to save the ocred text for later reading or repeated reading rather than
having to ocr it all over again.

I understand that this feature isn’t an Open Book replacement. But it
somehow seems like it should be possible to just save out what you just
spent time ocring.

Steve,

This is useful information, but I believe you need to correct it in two
ways.

In step 2, here you're selecting, not copying, text. It's important because
you can do other things with selected text besides copying.

In step 4, I believe the "append to clipboard" command, a JAWS function, is
JAWS key+Windows key+c. As you know, control-v is MS's paste command.

1. Go to the top (or bottom) of the text you want to copy, and set a temp

2. Go to the end of the text you want to copy and press the dual-layer
keystroke insert-space then the letter M to copy between the placemarker and
the marked point where your virtual cursor is located.

3. Press Control-C to copy to the clipboard.

4. If you want to append additional stuff to the clipboard, do the same
thing as above, except instead of copying the marked selection to the
clipboard control-C, use control-V instead.

question. I wonder if it is possible to save text that has undergone the ocr
process if a pdf file was the source of the original images or if you have
scanned a number of pages using a scanner or the pearl camera. The help section
did say you lose the text that was acquired from an onscreen image from things
like controls or a set up screen for an app once you move to a different
screen. But I was hoping that in other cases, it might be possible to save the
ocred text for later reading or repeated reading rather than having to ocr it

I understand that this feature isn’t an Open Book replacement. But it somehow
seems like it should be possible to just save out what you just spent time

Re: [JAWS-Users] clipboard and Google Chrome

2017-11-18 Thread Adrian Spratt
Try this. Go to the JAWS quick settings dialog with JAWS key+v. In the search
box, type "virtual," without the quotation marks. Down arrow from here. Among
the results will be something like "virtual cursor options." Press enter and
down arrow through the options. One will be "select and copy." Press spacebar
here to select the "virtual" option and tab to okay.

I've confirmed that this option appears in the quick settings dialog for Google
Chrome, but I haven't confirmed it actually works. However, it is only with
this setting in IE that you can reliably copy what you select. I hope the same
is true in Chrome. Of course, I wish it weren't necessary in the first place,
but so be it.

Kevin, no horse hockey here. I suspect you just need to delete the Word
document text before you paste the Notepad text back. Steps:

Select all in Word
Ctrl C copy
Del to clean it out.
Open Notepad
Ctrl V to paste
Esc to remove highlight
Ctrl A to select again
Ctrl C to copy
Go back to the empty Word document
Ctrl V to paste.

I am intrigued by those other suggestions of Alt + H + E and alt, ctrl,
shift, S with F6.
Have to try them some time.

[JAWS-Users] windows 10 mail questions

2017-11-18 Thread mary otten
I hope this is not off topic. I’m using the above named program with Jaws 2018.
On my old Windows xp machine with its equally old email client, this account
was set to pop3. That’s all the old email program supported. There was a
setting in that email client that allowed me to delete messages from the server
once they had been downloaded. I know that with gmail on my phone, I have the
option of archiving deleted messages or permanently deleting them after, I
think it is 30 days. I can’t find anything like that in the windows 10 mail
app, which, I guess, means that deleted messages are going to stay on the
server forever, which is not at all what I want. If there is a setting like
what I have described in this app, where is it and how do I get to it?

Also, I am seeing all of the emails I sent showing up in my messages list in
the inbox in the mail app. That never happened on my xp machine, and it does
not happen in any mail account I have on my phone, and it is not something I
want. I don’t mind a separate sent mail folder, but I sure don’t want to see
what I send in my inbox. How can I make this stop? Thanks in advance for any
help.

I believe in word after highlighted entire doc, pres shift+control+n. I
believe this removes formatting. I just tried it in Word2013. I typed a
line and then underlined then use shift+control+n and underline removed.

Kevin, no horse hockey here. I suspect you just need to delete the Word
document text before you paste the Notepad text back. Steps:

Select all in Word
Ctrl C copy
Del to clean it out.
Open Notepad
Ctrl V to paste
Esc to remove highlight
Ctrl A to select again
Ctrl C to copy
Go back to the empty Word document
Ctrl V to paste.

I am intrigued by those other suggestions of Alt + H + E and alt, ctrl,
shift, S with F6.
Have to try them some time.

Re: [JAWS-Users] clipboard and Google Chrome

2017-11-18 Thread LeDon
This method of copping text from a website doesn't work for me. Try this, go
to the Bard site pick out a book and then try to copy the description of the
book. It doesn't seem to copy, instead what you will have copied is the
number of books that are listed on the page or something like that. In any
event you will not have copied the description of the book you were trying
to copy. You cannot copy the description using ctrl shift right arrow to
select it one word at a time and then ctrl C to copy the selected text.
Neither can you place a marker at the title which is the first of the
description you want to copy and then placing an m at the end of the
description to complete the block to be copied and then pressing ctrl C to
copy it. Try it it doesn't work.

Doesn't setting a temporary placemarker method work for you, Terry?

1. Go to the top (or bottom) of the text you want to copy, and set a temp
placemarker with windows-control-k.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Subscript?

2017-11-18 Thread Adrian Spratt
Arianna, a threshold question: Do you want JAWS to stop verbalizing "subscript"
completely, or are you finding that text you don't want to be subscript is
somehow turning up that way? For myself, I like to know that text is in
subscript form, but there are times I accidentally set up text as subscript and
need to remove that format.

Re: [JAWS-Users] remove formatting

2017-11-18 Thread Adrian Spratt
Perhaps paste the text from Notepad into a completely new Word document.
Sometimes deleting the entire text doesn't delete all formatting. Another
possibility is that your default document settings are causing you to retain
some formatting. For example, I have word defaults set to double spacing,
indented paragraphs, page numbering and suppress page 1 page numbering. I'm not
sure how paragraph marks would be saved in a default format, but I've never
tried and don't plan to.

There are a couple of ways. I have an older version of MS Word but I go
into the menus where you choose fon characteristics and tab until I get to
"clear formatting" and with the text I want to remove I simply press that
button and its gone. Another method is to select everything I want to clear
the formatting on and then use Control-c to copy it and then I paste it into
a Notepad blank document and that does it. I re-copy the text in the
Notepad doc and paste it back into MS Word. HTH
