I take the trouble to post these links. I am not going to bother going to
some 3rd website to get a tiny url. You have to copy the entire string of

I think Diane is right. If the bobbins get too thin, like coat hanger

Jeri thanks for posting that link. I just spent an hour looking through it
all. There are some really spectacular pieces, but also some disappointments.
In many cases I just wish the photographer had gotten closer to the lace.

You will probably hear several quite different points of view on your
question, but here is mine. The first problem is that you nearly always don't
get as far as you want to in a first class. So the major problem is to choose
something that students can actually finish. And the class must b
One thing my local group used to do to deter light fingered visitors was to
cover the entire display table in transparent plastic (either cheap plastic
tablecloths or drop cloths for painters) and then fold the hanging edge of
plastic under and clamp it down. The result is not 100% secure, but rem

with certainty. From the
style I would say early 20th century. I've seen metallic laces from the 1600s
at the Art Institute of Chicago and the style in those was quite different.
It is the gimp paths in particular which lack the flavor of the really old
metallic laces.

There is another reason to be cautious about BIZ. A largish minority of
people have a strong allergic reaction to it. One of my sisters and I both
had severe contact dermatitis as a result of using it. (One inch diameter
fluid filled blisters, really nasty.)

LePompe 1559 is a pattern book, the earliest, and it is easy to see what the
laces must have looked like. Aside from that Santina Levey's LACE is very
good on lace history.

I have some 6 inch bobbins I made from 3/4 inch stock. They make a nice low
pitched "thunk". Then I also have some 5 inches long made from 3/8 inch stock
and each different wood, with different densities, make different pitches.
I've often thought of just hanging them up in a bunch giving t
