Back in June I wrote about the smelly lace book I had got in the mail. I
tried a number of suggestions made on Arachne.
As I have non-clumping cat litter on hand I put about a cup full into a plastic
bag along with the book, sealed it and put it in my outdoor screened porch.
After a month
The name of Bounty has been changed in the UK to Plenty.
I had success in deodorising a book by placing it vertically in a box with
the pages fanned out so there was space between them, and putting it outside
during the day on warm days, making sure it wasn't in direct sunlight. Took

I read a lot of books from the library -- and yes, some of them really
stink from tobacco. I spray the book with a room deodorizer and
disinfectant while fanning the pages. This may not be the best way to
treat a book, but these aren't heirlooms and it works.

I received smelly books a couple times. I didn't want the smell in my house.
Once I put it on the front porch, fanned open, and left it for several weeks.
Another, during bad weather, I put in the attic, opened, and left for a long
time. I didn't bring either into the main house until the
I think, in both cases, it was smoke smell rather than musty.
In the replies to this problem there seem to be people who've had
success and people who haven't, and I am wondering if it isn't the

Dear Janice and Others with smelly books.
This is not an unusual problem.
Just a month ago I received a list of 22 things you can do with a sheet of

Janice,
I can tell you what won't work. I tried putting a book in the freezer (in a
plastic bag) for about 3 months. About 10 minutes after I took it out it
smelled just as bad as when I put it in. Then I tried the dryer sheets
(Bounce). No luck there.
Now I am trying a bag of unused
I can also tell you that putting it in a bag with baking soda didn't work :(
I can't remember who recommended that but it had no effect on the cigarette
smoke smell on a book I bought. (In the end I threw the book away)
