I received smelly books a couple times. I didn't want the smell in my house. Once I put it on the front porch, fanned open, and left it for several weeks. Another, during bad weather, I put in the attic, opened, and left for a long time. I didn't bring either into the main house until the smell had dissipated. I think, in both cases, it was smoke smell rather than musty.
If the smell didn't go away, the book was useless to me. I'm willing to take more drastic action if the smell continues since the smell makes the book worth very little. If it can't go away, the book will be discarded.
