[lace] Lace website
Dear Arachnes, I don't think I've see this site posted - I stumbled across it while searching for something else. It has a wonderful set of good quality images of a wide range of lace. I particularly like the most recent Bedfordshire collars (nos 667 and 670) I don't know who is behind it - it is a lovely idea. http://www.laceforstudy.org.uk Welcome to Lace For Study. This is an amateur offering, to share with lace enthusiasts some lace items of varying qualities, from some being very poor, to some from the highest achievements of lace makers. It is offered in homage to the countless numbers of our lace-making predecessors, especially to those who spent their lives making endless lengths of only one pattern. Items are NOT for sale. [lace] re:- Pillow Stands
I have a couple of pillow stands which were turned in exotic woods by Geoff Mudge in England. Because these are beautifully turned they are not cheap but are like a piece of furniture and don't look out of place in my lounge when in use. These were bought as present for me, at different times, by my DH. Geoff Mudge does not have a website, he has a small catalogue of the items he makes which he sends on request. His e.mail is geoffmudgel...@aol.com For working on my lap I made a small rectangular cushion out of an old pillow case I had handy which I cut to size, making it shorter but keeping it's width. I filled the pillow case with the polystyrene pieces that are used as packing in parcels of fragile items, I found I was collecting a lot of these pieces from parcels I received so found a use for them. These poly pieces come in different shapes but you could buy polystyrene beads in craft shops to use as well. It does not need to be filled too full just about half or 2 thirds full, you have to leave plenty of space for the beads to move about inside. I stitched the opening closed and then made a removable cover for it in a pretty fabric. This cushion goes on my lap and when I put the lace pillow on top I shuffle it about on my knees until I get a good angle to work on, the polystyrene shapes or beads move about to form a sloping base. Before you stitch the pillow case opening closed it is a good idea to pin the opening closed and test with your lace pillow on top to see if there are too many or too Few pieces. Make any necessary adjustments to the filling before you finish off the cushion. I can take this cushion in the back of my pillow carrying bag if necessary, it weighs virtually nothing. Biggins Bobbins sell a pillow with a bean bag already attached to it, and also a table stand that folds up. http://www.bigginslace.co.uk/ Regards Jenny DeAngelis Katelyn asked:- I am wondering what everyone is using as a pillow stand for a cookie pillow. Do you have a freestanding prop only used for your pillow, or do you make all your lace with the pillow propped up on the kitchen table? If you have a prop for use on a table, did you make it or buy it? At my apartment we were really wanting for space, so my pillow rested on my lap when in use, and I would roll up a t-shirt under the pillow to give it a little slant. Now that we are in a house I suddenly have much more space, and could set up on a small table or get a full stand. What do you reccomend? - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Pillow Stand
I don't know if they are still available, but I love my pillow stand made by Simon Toustous of Canada. Not only are the wood and workmanship beautiful, but you can adjust it to any height, not just predetermined increments, and also any angle. So if you are working around in different directions, you can be making incremental changes in the angle so that the bobbins are hanging optimally. Also, the variable height aspect makes it possible to change height during long lacemaking marathons. This is so important since at a certain point, a single vertebra will start to scream with pain, and then you can vary the height just enough to move the stress to the next vertebra, rather than having to desist from lacemaking. With careful attention to changing the height at regular intervals you can work for 10 hours or so, until every vertebra in your back is screaming with pain. Believe it or not, this is an advantage :-) Devon - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Re: Pillow Stand
I have always wanted some of these fancy pillow stands that some of the vendors make and that all of you are talking about. Ken van Dieren's work being one of them ;) Just isn't in my budget to do so. I do have the tools and know how to make my own. I am a woodworker among other hobbies. But just haven't made the time to make my own. So being the thrifty person I am and we go garage sale(tag sale) hunting, I have found a couple of items to repurpose into pillow stands. One is a cute spindle style plant stand. I had to sit at a chair to test out the height before I bought it. But I noticed it right away as a solution to make into a pillow stand. I use it for my Honiton pillow. My other garage sale find was an under the bed table stand. The kind where the feet slide under the bed and the table top slides over your legs so you have a work space while sitting up in bed. Again, I tested for height. This under-the-bed table is the one I like most. I face the end of the table toward me and rest my feet on its flat feet to stabilize. You can prop the back of the table area to tilt the pillow. But I mostly work my roller pillow on it or my cookie pillows are slightly domed so I don't have to do that. Keep your eyes out for items to repurpose as pillow stands. It is a fun challenge. :) -- Mark, aka Tatman website: http://www.tat-man.net blog: http://tat-man.net/blog Magic Thread Shop: http://www.tat-man.net/tatterville/tatshop/tatshop.html Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/TatmanBobbin - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Pillow Stand
Thanks for providing the Toustou catalogue _http://stoustou.jalbum.net/catalogue/index.html_ (http://stoustou.jalbum.net/catalogue/index.html) The table I like is the final one, the portable one. It does have a way that you can collapse it to make it portable. The bottom part comes off and can be repositioned, leaving a spade like handle to carry it with. I take it to classes because it is so easy to work with, but it is also an attractive piece of furniture. The one flaw is that it is a little on the heavy and bulky side, so I tend not to take it to conventions that I have to fly to. But I definitely take it anywhere I can drive to. [lace] Re; Lace pillow stand
Hi Arachnids, The stand I use was made by Brian Goodwin. http://www.briangoodwin.co.uk/ He also makes other lace accessories as well as bits for dollsâ houses. It is completely height and angle adjustable and one can get different sizes tops to go on the same stand. The top comes off and flat packs while the legs unscrew to leave the central column as the largest item. I made a bag for it which is about 15 cms round with two pockets for bits. This can hang on a strap from the shoulder. My pillow bag and folding chair (canvas and aluminium) go in one hand my walking stick in the other. As I cannot carry much weight âbad back- everything has to be light weight. I also have a Spanish stand which is completely height adjustable and has a tilt-able and adjustable for pillow size top. This can be replaced by a top for a bolster type pillow which also flat-packs. I cannot remember the name of the firm I bought it from, but they were at the Christmas Lace Fair in Birmingham in either 2004 and/or 2005. A useful, sturdy pillow stand, but not as well finished as Brian Goodwinâs and really too heavy to cart around. No affiliation to either firm, just a happy customer. Happy lace making, Joepie. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Convention in Aug in St Paul?
Hello Cearbhael, The official convention website is located here: http://www.minnlacesociety.org/IOLI/index.html You can download a full copy of the registration information that was published in the winter IOLI bulletin as well as the registration form. We hope you will be able to attend the full convention, but if that isn't going to work out for you, there are several small classes being offered. For a small fee, we are also offering 2 public days (Wednesday or Saturday) with full access to the sales room. We will have a great collection of lace vendors. If you come on Wednesday, you have the added benefit of access to the display room and 3 lace-related presentations. If you are going to register for classes, please double check the class page on the website before you send it in as we have marked the classes that we know are full at this point. There are others that are very close, so make sure to put your 2nd and 3rd choices on the form. Please let me know if you have any questions, and we hope to see you in August! [lace] pillow stands
Most of what has been described have been tables. I have several of those mentioned in the correspondence. But the stand I prefer, especially for travel, is not a table but a stand. It was given to me by Jeannette Van Ord in the Netherlands and is the kind that is used in Bruges and many other places in that part of the world. It is basically an adjustable column: the inner length slides up and down inside a case and is held in place by a nail thrust through holes. There is a simple cross piece at the top of the inner column, and it has a flat base attached to the outer case on which to rest the feet and hold the whole thing steady. The base is the right size to fit into my carry-on suitcase. The pillow rests between the cross piece at the top of the column and my knees. It fits any chair, high or low. It works best with a flat block pillow and continental bobbins. I have given the pattern for this to several friends with handy husbands and they have been pleased with the results. It is really hard to describe in words. If someone is really interested, I can take a picture and email it to her. [lace] spring too early
On that subject I have to report that I heard geese flying overhead at 1:00 am this morning. And the silly robin was singing at 2:00am. (Daylight doesn't arrive until after 6 am). Late this afternoon I heard our first sea gull of the season. And that robin was singing his heart out at dusk this evening. I went grocery shopping today wearing clothes I usually reserve for July. It has been a very mild winter, and spring is way ahead of itself. The plants and the birds are confused. It scares me a little to think about what the real July will be like. [lace] Progress... Betty Ann
I've just got off the phone with Clive Rice... Betty Ann's husband. When he last saw her she was grey and totally out of it, but in good shape, according to her doctors. This afternoon when he visited, she was sitting up in a chair, eating Jello, and looking for all the world like she was at Tea!! He is elated with how fast she has rebounded, and says her doctors are equally pleased. She will remain in ICU for another day, and may be sent home by the end of the weekend. Her daughter is coming up to help take care of them, and so it all looks really good at this point. Clive sends his sincere thanks to all of you who have written (through Arachne...). I sent him an email telling him all who had written, and Betty Ann was thrilled to hear from all of you. She's a tough bird (her own words), and we haven't heard the last from her yet!!! Clive is looking forward to a contented night's sleep (well earned!) tonight. Clay - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here.
