Gabriele, Kindle is a brandmark and is connected with amazon. And this is in my opinion a problem, you can bye e.books only from them. There excist several other e-readers like mine from Sony. Than you are free to bye where you want. The e.reader from Thalia are also connected with Thalia. And if you have a i-Pad or a i-Pad Mini your are bound on Apple. But if you want to buy one take one who has e-ink system you can't see color than but the script is perfect. Newer models have an integrated light, Sony offers a little lamp you can pin on the reader. Hope this helps. Re: [lace] Re: [lace] books vs kindle
I have an iPad and iBooks tend to be pdf in format for this reader. However, I was able to download a free kindle app from the AppStore to allow me to access kindle books. I think that amazon have realised that they need to make their ebooks available to other platforms so they opened up access. However, if you have bought a ebook reader (such as kindle) rather than a tablet (such as an iPad) it is unlikely that you will be able to add software to read other formats. This has been one of the reasons people looked at buying tablets. However, WH Smiths in the UK have their own ebook reader kobo which you can buy for 1/10 of the cost of a tablet such as an iPad. It is that cheap that it the cost of 4or 5 hardback books which makes people think that it is worth buying. But I also use my iPad to access e-ink version of my print magazines such as good food, gardener's world and knitting and crochet magazines which are not always available on other platforms (or ebook readers) L Kind Regards Liz Baker On 20 May 2013, at 12:31, Ilske Thomsen ilske.l.thom...@t-online.de wrote: Kindle is a brandmark and is connected with amazon. Re: [lace] early lace pillows
Dear Bev et al, I agree with what you say, but point out that cotton drill was either nonexistent or too expensive for a poor lacemaker to use on a pillow, and therefore vote for a similar twill fabric, but linen. Might be hard to find, or expensive. I highly doubt that there would be much change from a Tudor pillow and a Midlands bolster. If it works, why change. And the Midlands bolster is a basic no frills pillow. I made one once from drill cotton, and it was a heavy immoveable object but worked well for lace. There are several centuries between the Tudors and this Midlands bolster, but apply the same principle to the standard width of fabric readily accessible at the time - check into weaving history for that (plain weave or twill?), and for the stuffing, whatever there was lots of, also readily accessible. Possibly chaff from flax processing? The origins for the useful object would be based on what was around thinking in terms of recycling, as one would do. What could the pillow have been stuffed with? Would it have been straw, rags or maybe sawdust? Also, what type of fabric would have made sense to make the pillow out of? Maybe a linen or wool? I would like to make something like this for recreation purposes at some point, but so far I haven't found resources for the average Tudor era bed pillow. I've seen fancier pillow cases, but have not found much info yet for the pillow itself. Still need to do more digging on this. Thanks! [lace] kindle lace books?
There are some who described doing things to get lace prickings and such on their kindle. For those who have that or a similar device, do you, or would you use your device when you make lace? Would you read your lace books on such a device if available? How difficult is it to take the paper copy of the pricking or diagram and put it on the kindle/device? Or vice versa, kindle/device to paper pricking. Would something like a kindle or other device fit comfortably on a pillow? In other words, this technology as it is now comprised, does it have a place for lacemakers? Or do we need to wait for that. Is this another way to ensure lace books do not go out of print, but that the royalties go to the authors of such books, and not astronomical prices when the book is out of the authors hands and very rare but in high demand? Obviously I do not have such a device, but I sure would like to know if we need to send a message to our lace book authors. And, how difficult would it be to turn a popular but out of print lacebook into a kindle/device edition? Could you get a pricking from such a version? Re: [lace] early lace pillows
To clarify, I used drill cotton (present-day fabric) for my version of a Midlands bolster, and I referred to twill (the weave technique) for the period fabric of whatever fibre content, wool, linen, silk, horsehair even (and stuffed with that, too, as someone mentioned). Probably not cotton as that was still an import item. I can't tell by looking at the jpg, the financial status of the figures, but they appear to be comfortable! Re: [lace] kindle lace books?
Lyn, I have scanned pages from two Romanian Point lace books that I own. I scanned the pages with various fillings so that I will always have them with me. That way I can take just my project with me and pick my fillings on the fly or use the scanned pages as a reference. I can zoom in closely and I have an easel stand for my Nook Color that allows the device to stand on the table in front or beside me. So far it has worked well for me. I've also scanned some of the tatting patterns that I use on a regular basis so that they are always available as a reference. I don't know how it would work for bobbin lace. Maybe scanning the working diagram would be useful, but I cannot print from my Nook, so a full bobbin lace ebook with the prickings in it wouldn't be functional, at least at this time. [lace] lace-related uses for tablets and other digital devices
One additional use I have found valuable is the capability of my tablet to photograph instructor-drawn lace diagrams from a lace class done on a blackboard or dry erase board. I am terrible at redrawing these useful diagrams of specific techniques and have in the past used a digital camera or smartphone with camera function to photograph diagrams rather than trying to copy them by hand. Think of it as a portable xerox/photocopy machine. With my tablet (mine is a Microsoft Surface with USB port), I can photograph the instructor's drawings and see them clearly on my tablet screen, or choose to print or copy them to another computer. (The tablet screen is considerably larger than the phone or digital camera screen so I can see it clearly without needing to transfer it for useful purposes, plus it can be enlarged by placing my fingers on the photo and sliding them apart.) I think we are just beginning to learn how these new devices can be useful to lacemaking. As an aside, my tablet also has a Kindle app, so I can download books from that source, but also from many other sources which have been mentioned. Also, if I have a photo (either taken by me or downloaded from another source) of lace, I can enlarge the photo detail to a virtual microscopic degree to study the lace and its thread paths, provided the resolution is high enough.
