Re: [lace] What is the best way to start bobbin lace?
Other parts of Devonâs meassage have already been addresses. This part: âIs this hobby something easy to pack away (so my kids canât get their hands in it) and something I can pick up and leave as my free time permits? I have some experience in crocheting but beginners level.â Honestly, my answer would be ânoâ. Yes, you might be able to pack it up and put it away out of reach of 2 toddlers, but is it as easy as packing up crochet? No. But more importantly, if her free time is so very limited and sporatic then I seriously question that she has the time to devote to the early stages of learning bobbin lace. In my experience a beginner needs to devote a fair amount of âconsistentâ attention to learning lace, and if not you will easily find yourself a few weeks later asking âwhat is a cross?â Maybe after she gets comfortable and familiar with the basics THEN someone might be able to âpick up and leaveâ, but this doesnât happen with most beginners for quite some time. Of course there are always those that pick ut up right away, but then she has only âsome experience in crocheting at a beginner level.â I would suggest that she continue to pursue that hobby as it is more easily picked up and put away. My personal story my first lace class was with Betty Aldeson of Snowgoose at a stitching conference. It was on a Saturday outside Chicago. My husband, 10y daughter and 21mo son came along. While I was in class DH took the kids to the zoo. After I got home, I made one more bookmark. As a working mom, everything got âpacked up and out of the wayâ. It didnât come back down for 3 years when I found a local community college and the Doris Southard Lace guild. Still was a working mom. Didnât devote much more time to lace until I left my job and my son was in school. So the reality is, that just because you want to make beautiful lace NOW, it doesnât mean it wonât happen later. I also do understant the desire to find a fulfilling hobby for your prescious free time! [lace] The whys & wherefores of using temporary pins in Binche
Susan, Count me among those that happily use support pins in Binche! I discovered this trick in one of Ulrike's books and it has been wonderful. I am a tension-er, always tugging and pulling on my threads. I usually use my regular fine pins, not necessarily the really fine insect pins, but it depends on my mood. I think any holes left by pins will be much less unsightly than threads pulled out of place! I also leave those pins in the work as long as the others. Then when the lace is done and all the threads snipped I go around the cloth stitch areas with glass head pin and gently "scratch" the threads next to any holes to close them up. Usually you can't even tell a pin was there! Enjoy your Binche adventure! [lace] computer programmers and lace
Hi Sharon, I first saw and discovered such a thing called bobbin lace in the early 1980âs but I didnât take my first lace class until 1996. However, I was indeed a software engineer (we preferred that term over computer programmer as we also did software design) in 1983-4+. Around this timeframe our company (Rockwell Collins) was an early adapter of the Ada programming language! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ada_(programming_language) I worked with Ada for the rest of my career at the company. My lace work has been mostly after leaving my job in 2000. Again, I donât see any relevance between code and lace. But it was fun learning about Countess Ada Lovelace and her work with Charles Babbage as one of the first females to âprogramâ a computer! I've never > been taught Binche but I've made a few small pieces from working diagrams and > their construction makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. A year ago I may have agreed that Binche was pure art and no logic about it. Then last fall I had the opportunity to learn about Binche design from Kumiko Nakazaki. I expected to be out of my comfort zone due to my lack of artistic skills. But then I was introduced to the logical formula of Binche design and was much more optimistic I could do it. At first I was totally confused but eventually it âclickedâ. Alas, even with knowing the theory it is still rather difficult to execute. [lace] mathematicians, IT engineers and lacemaking
I have heard this mentioned before too that many lacemakers are in these fields. I, myself, have a Mathmatics degree and worked as a software engineer for 20+ years. However, I really don’t think my math skills have anything to do with my ability to make lace. I sorely lack in artistic skills (the other side of the brain) and greatly admire the lacemakers who are also designers. Yes, I can implement their designs (Binche is my favorite) with adequate instruction. I think if you replace “engineer” and “mathematician” with other professions you will also find many lacemakers that fit those categories as well. People also say math folks are good with music not me! Anita Hansen Cedar Rapids, Iowa - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. But never fear, this is Iowa so it will likely be 80+ degrees next week so we get average spring temps for the month! lol It is also a good excuse for not being able to do yardwork today and instead make more progress on my lace fan for the IOLI convention! Re: [lace] Lace Revival of the 1970s
I consulted my notes which consist of a few writeups of Doris over the years. She actually wrote on a 2005 Arachne thread âHow I Started lacemakingâ https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/msg14763.html She was an avid weaver and knitter when she first discovered bobbin lace in 1950âs Womanâs Day magazine article. After teaching herself, she then demonstrated and taught lace classes locally before eventually being asked to do articles and finally a book. I have a few articles on her from past IOLI Bulletins (including Sept 1970, Jan 1978, Spring 2009, summer 2006, and spring 2012) if you would like me to scan and send you a pdf. Lucky you! I too follow both Tricia’s and Mary’s blogs. Alas, I didn’t win anything this year. I have a nice Gingers scissors for my embroidery when I need a sharp point for hardanger. That pair was a gift from my husband many years ago. I have been resisting the temptation to amass a scissors collection. Or at least not invest in expensive ones! I have picked up a few that are nothing noteworthy but still better than nothing to attach my stitched fobs. RE: [lace] Please Share Lace Experiences and Questions
I will confess to mostly lurking over the years with just occasional posts. I usally look daily at Arachne via the bookmark to the archive on my iPad, while getting digests in email. To reply is difficult because of need to get into email and retype the subject and cut/paste any discussion. Not always the easiest on a ipad. Well, just now I noticed a Reply Button at the bottom of the archive post. So I tried it and can now easily reply by replacing the posters email with lace@arachne yay! I will also confess to being on the Facebook page (and fb in general) the past couple of years. I think both groups have value especially the ability to search the Arachne archives! But it is easier to help people (esp new lacemakers) with issues by viewing their photos. There are over 5700 in one group with many people brand new and wanting to learn how to make bobbin lace. They see pics on the internet (pinterest) and then go searching for more information. And I also want to thank Jeri for her invaluable contibutions over the many years. Because of Arachne I was thrilled to put her name to her face when I met her at the 2017 IOLI convention in Bethesda. I will never forget her arachnid hat! Thank you Jeri! [lace] Ghost pillow, voodoo pillow, pins
In my initial Binche class it was suggested to use the sticky arrows. Hated them! It is so much easier to pull a pin out of the foam and quickly move it than it is to get an arrow off of paper and repositioned. Also i use a bunch of pins and there would not be room for all arrows. Since most of the time I am working on my lace at home I don't worry about pins falling out in transport. I think if I were going to travel I would look into getting thicker foam so I could push them all the way in for transport. It is also very unlikely I will make a pattern twice and if I do I can always print another diagram! So pins win hands down for me too! [lace] Re: Colour Coding
LOL! Here I thought I was so very clever a few years ago when I covered a piece of foam with cloth and pinned on an enlarged copy of my Binche working diagram! I had not read or heard of the idea elsewhere. I too place the colored glass headed pins to keep track of completed stitches. As I get more experienced I "prick" fewer spots on the diagram. I also sometimes coordinate the color of a pin (which is placed on the intersection of the completed stitch) with a pin of the same color on my pillow between those two actual pairs. Makes it easier to spot and match up the diagram with the bobbins. Great minds certainly think alike! [lace] IOLI convention musings
This year my husband tagged along with me to the IOLI convention in order to spend a couple of days before the convention in Boston visiting our daughter. I warned him I would be busy with activities throughout the week so he needed to make plans to keep himself amused. He visited Valley Forge park twice, a train museum and Winterthur Museum on Friday. I carved out time Tuesday to go to dinner with him and 3 ladies came along too. (The benefit of having a car!) I also was able to take Wednesday off from the convention and we saw some sights in downtown Philly including the Liberty Bell, Indpendance Hall, the Mint and Ben Franklin wandering the street near his gravesite. This year convention was extra busy for me as it was my first time as the IOLI Supply chair and responsible for making sure our IOLI table in the vending room was staffed and had the money pouch. Molly Heller, the Membership Chair, and I have some ideas about improving things for next year. Alas, I only passed by the exhibit room twice and never made it inside to see the beautiful items. Luckily the contest items were on display at the banquet. This Saturday I will have a leisurely look at the People's Choice winning piece as it was done by our guild's own Sally Olsen. This year my morning class was Milanese with Louise Colgan and thoroughly enjoyed working on an adorable hedgehog design. I hope to finish it up yet this week. My afternoons were spent reacquainting myself with Chantilly in Ulrike Voehlker's class. Since I will likely be flying to San Antonio next year I will stick with one technique for the week and not two! But which? It was nice to once again have delightful table favors at each meal! I need to dig through my bag to see what all we got! Sunday we received handmade lace earring which I wore to the Monday dinner. I believe the "pearls" were in our nice blue registration totes, both gifts from the host group. At the banquet we each received a beautiful wooden pin box. It took some of us a little more time than others to figure out how to open it! lol My thanks to the Media gals who provided daily photo updates on the Facebook page. And thanks to fellow Arachnids for their reports here! Thanks also go to Arlene for organizing our lunch! What a great turnout! [lace] Support pin in Binche cloth areas
I saw Jo's post on her Binche sampler and comment about tension problems in cloth areas because of no support pins. I left a reply for her about how I use them. I decided I might as well "come out" here publicly and declare it as well. I use support pins in my cloth areas. And I DON'T care what the lace police think of it! Years ago when I was first exploring how to work this lovely lace I found that tip in just one book. I won't reveal the author, but if it's good enough for her it's good enough for me! It may not be "traditional" but neither is my use of the computer to copy and size my prickings, or my Dazor magnifier lamp to see what I'm doing. Using support pins in those triangular areas of the working diagram where a worker drops down and becomes a passive makes it possible for me to ENJOY making Binche lace! Adding temporary plaits are too much trouble and a waste of time. Besides I like to tug and pull my threads so a support pin is a must. When my lace is finished and off the pillows I use another pin to gently nudge closed any holes left by the pins. You can't tell they were there. [lace] Mounting lace
I mounted my lace medallions on a velvet-like material by first placing the fabric in a large wooden embroidery hoop. I made sure that the hoop was larger than the size of the frame (which was only a 5"x7" frame so maybe a 10" hoop?) I used a smaller size Egyptian cotton thread to "sew" around the edge of the lace. Since the lace had a nice sewing edge I was able to make nice even stitches which are not even visible. Then I just stretched the fabric over the mat/mounting board just like one might do for an embroidery project. One could either lace the fabric or place pins around the edge, but since this was just regular fabric and not an embroidery I threw caution to the wind and likely used tape on the back! (Gasp!) So far it's not sagging and if it ever does I can always add more tape! lol This was how I mounted the Binche pieces I displayed at the IOLI convention this summer. P.S. I also agree that glass should not touch your lace. In fact, I don't even use glass! But that is different debate! For a couple of years she was even one of the volunteers that helped plan the event. She went to college at the Univ of Iowa in neighboring Iowa City. Her array of costumes are still here at our house. Her sewing skills at that age were AMAZING! She also made some spiky bright orange wigs that were so popular people ordered them from her and she made about 6 one summer alone. The Anime folks like to dress up, role play, have costume contests and photo shoots. Lace related content: One year she asked Mom do you have any lace? I'd like to put some on the cuffs. My dear fellow Arachnids! The 2015 IOLI convention is nearly here!!! I am so looking forward to welcoming you to my home state of Iowa! The weather has been warm and humid, typical for late July! But it could be worse! There will be an Arachne lunch gathering on TUESDAY in the Coral ballroom salon B. Due to the fact that the Arachne lunch was abruptly pulled from a previous convention, we are not allowed to advertize it on the IOLI website or in the convention program. It will be announced at the opening dinner and included on the hotel signage. This is not a sit down plated lunch. The hotel is offering grab and go cash concessions in the Coral A salon. Pick up what you like, or bring your own brown bag, and meet in Salon B where it will be more private for our group. (Anyone is welcome to purchase concessions and there are tables in Salon A for eating as well.) The extra salon will only be open for the Arachne (Tuesday) and OIDFA lunches (Friday). And again, I will warn everyone that there is a very interesting convention the preceding weekend. The hotel will be booked SOLID on Saturday night. Check out is noon Sunday. These people are at the hotel just like we are for activities at the hotel, so it is very unlikely that many will be checking out early. Their convention also offers late check out for an extra fee and it sounds like it is popular. Their closing ceremonies are around 5-6pm (I believe). Do not expect to get a room early! Your patience is appreciated! Sit back and people watch! re: [lace] 2015 IOLI convention room block
A few rooms have been added to our convention rate block. Please book asap if you still need a room. She didn't mention how long the deadline would be extended. I will try to keep an eye on it to see if we run out again. The link is found on the 2015 IOLI Convention webpage under Hotel and then following another link to the hotel reservation site. Or by calling the phone number listed. http://www.internationalorganizationoflace.org/Conventions/2015Convention/ind ex.html Thanks! [lace] 2015 IOLI Convention Room Block
Okay, let me try this again by typing instead of using copy/paste. It appears our room block is full for Wednesday! Have no fear! I have gotten a message through to the gal at the hotel (even though it is Saturday and a major holiday!) She has assured me she will add more rooms to our block on Monday when she returns to the office. She is also happy to extend the booking deadline. I imagine it will only be a couple extra days and I will post the date when I know for sure. Thanks everyone for your patience and understanding! Have a Happy 4th of July! See you soon! Re: [lace] booking teachers
Indeed, as Sue M. wrote, it is very much due to venue availability! Especially the dates for our 2015 convention. If you recall only 2 years ago in Salt Lake City there was NO group planning for 2015. We initially thought to hold the convention at a newly opened facility with a wide open schedule for 2015, but that venue didn't work out and we found the Marriott in Coralville, which I hope everyone will love. But with only 1.5 years away we were lucky to get ANY week in the summer! Our only alternative was NEXT WEEK, which in the US immediately follows a MAJOR holiday. We didn't think that would be acceptable and apparently would have completely overlapped your lace days. Subject: Re: [lace] Wish list of teachers
This may sound odd, but I wish I had been around in the days when Doris Southard was teaching at the IOLI conventions! By the time I met Doris in 2002(2) she was 80+ years old and no longer teaching. I do have a photo of her working on her pillow but didn't have an opportunity to spend much time watching her make lace. I think it would have been wonderful to have taken a Tonder class from her! I imagine there are still some lucky people out there that did have that pleasure! Speaking of Miss Channer I think it is a safe bet that one of our member's will be displaying her completed mat in the exhibit room at the IOLI convention this year! See you soon!!! Re: [lace] Bobbin storage
I am wondering how you store your bobbins when they are not in use? Liz, I use those plastic pencil boxes that kids use for school! One year I picked up a couple dozen on clearance for 25cents each and passed them out to our guild during retreat. They stack nicely! I just need to add some labels. In addition to the new blue ones I bought, now I also have a few that my kids actually used in elementary school. I also use one as a tool box in my lace tote bag. Maybe you'll see it at convention! It's purple! I also have a few rectangular tins that I use too. Anita Hansen who spend the day working on bobbin rolls for the Arachne lunch which will be on Tuesday during the convention. Re: [lace] IOLI Convention Arachne lunch
Hey Janice! We will be spending a lot of time together at convention as I am in the same classes! Yes, we are excited to be able to provide an affordable option for the Arachne lunch. (and similarily for OIDFA on Friday). You will be able to select your concessions and take them to section of the ballroom. [Like at many hotels a large ballroom can be subdivided into smaller sections and this is what we will do to accomodate our large gathering vs smaller group.] You didn't hear it from me, but I also see no reason why you couldn't bring in your own brown bag lunch. I plan to contribute some prizes, assuming I can find my sewing machine! Looking forward to welcoming everyone to Iowa in just a couple of months! [lace] Re: Bolster pillows
Rereading your original post I should probably add that I haven't actually done it, nor have I used a bolster pillow. So I can't speak to whether not the weight of the pillow would be an issue. I have thought about someday using it as a large roller for a scarf. Noelene, thanks so much for the tip about the Book Catalogue app! I have been trying to organize my lace and embroidery books after our move to a new house. [lace] Binche Peacock
Hi Sherry! I think I have made the peacock that was discussed, but I'm not sure. My patterns and lace books are still packed away after our move so I can't check the pattern to see if was from OIDFA. I have uploaded a photo of my lace to the arachne2003 flicker account. My Binche lace skills are primarily self taught. If you can follow a color-coded Belgium diagram you are well on your way to doing Binche! Oh, and being able manage a zillion bobbins helps! LOL! If you can't find a Binche workshop, one in Flanders or Paris is the next best thing. The most difficult part of working Binche lace (aside from the zillion bobbins) is that it will keep you on your toes. You will need to constantly refer to the diagram. This isn't Torchon where you look at the lace and automatically know what to do and easily get into a repeatable rhythm. So you will either like that or you won't. I don't even bother taking my Binche project to a lace demonstration because I need to concentrate. I also put my working diagram on a styrofoam board (covered with fabric) so I can use pins to keep my place. I will suggest that it helped me to practice Flanders ground, Paris ground and snowflake ground before I just jumped into one of Kumiko Nakazaki's design which was similar in size to this peacock. Kumiko Nakazaki will be teaching a class on Binche lace at the upcoming 2015 IOLI convention. I am delighted to say it is being co-hosted by the Doris Southard Lace Guild right here in eastern Iowa, namely Coralville. You can find information on the IOLI website. And you will (hopefully) find me in her class too! Anita Hansen Cedar Rapids, Iowa - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Re: Arachne at IOLI 2015 convention
Janice is correct, we are working on having pay as you go concessions available for a quick lunch at the hotel. We are meeting with the hotel tomorrow about this very topic, so I will have more information soon. I'm not sure if complete box lunches will be available, or ala cart items. Which would you prefer? The concessions would be open to all attendees, but the Arachne folks would gather in a designated portion of the ballroom. A similar setup would be available for the OIDFA gathering as well. We will also be discussing options for breakfast. Regarding classes, spread the word to your embroidery friends that one of the new owners of the Nordic Needle, Debi Feyh, will be teaching Hardanger embroidery throughout the week. It's unfortunate that Decorah's Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum is a 2.5 hour drive north and too far to include in our scheduled tours. But if you are traveling from that direction I highly encourage a brief stop! They have all sorts of lace techniques on display and even a bobbin lace pillow! [lace] 2015 IOLI convention class list
Good news everyone! The classes for the 2015 IOLI convention are now posted on the IOLI website http://www.internationalorganizationoflace.org/ . The full information for the convention will be coming later. But it is fun to have an early idea for what classes are available. I know what will be going on my registration form! I think we have a wonderful range of techniques from which to choose! Please keep in mind that our schedule will be shifted one day from tthe traditional Sunday-Friday. Registration and the opening banquet will be on MONDAY July 27. Classes will be on Tues, Wed, Friday Saturday. Mid-week tours and public day will on Thursday. The closing banquet will be Saturday August 1. Please be sure to make your travel arrangements accordingly! The members of the Doris Southard Lace Guild are looking forward to welcoming you all to Lace on the Prairie in Coralville, Iowa. Harvest time is well under way now and soon the fields will be blanked in snow. But next summer the corn will be once again green and tall in fields that were once long ago covered with tall prairie grass. And if you look carefully, you may also spot some Queen Anne's lace growing along the roadsides. [lace] Re: 2015/Iowa/Czech-Slovak Museum
Sorry everyone! There appears to be some glitch between my hitting Send and the message arriving in Arachne. So I'll retype it here instead of using paste. The website for the National Czech Slovak Museum Library is at http://www.ncsml.org . If you look at the Museum History part of the website you will see some pictures of the kroje (costumes). Faces of Freedom is their large permanent exhibit. In that new exhibit area there is a turntable with about 10 or 12 kroje on display on manikins with mirrors on the walls. You can stand and watch and see all sides of all of the costumes. The first thing you notice about the costumes is the use of color which varies by region. There as you look closer you see the various kinds of embellishment including embroidery and lace. There is a lot of variety in the lace and interesting use of colors in some of the lace. Some IOLI members attended the kroje symposium the museum had pirior to the flood in 2008. Since the flood, the museum building was lifted, moved north along the river bank, rotated and then set on top of a new foundation with additional gallery and office space. There is street level parking inside the new foundation which is wonderful during the winter. Watch the monumental Move video to see how the building was moved and explanded. Hope the above comes through! Anita - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. For help, write to arachne.modera...@gmail.com. [lace] Re: 2015/Iowa/Czech-Slovak Museum
Yes, I believe they have some contemporary pieces in their collection. Last year they had a temporary exhibit Bobbins, Bows Beads that was small but heavenly! Several pieces of lace and embroidery were on display. I was given permission to take photos. I put some snippets together for our newsletter. I have figured out how to upload it to Flicker. I'm not sure if this is a direct link or not https://www.flickr.com/photos/lacemaker/11969017156/in/set-72157639807500354/ lightbox/ The second photo from the left on the top row shows a portion of an apron made with fish scales! It also had some lovely point ground lace on it too. I have found it very interesting the Czech Slovak people used both tape laces and point ground laces in their costumes!
