Re: [lace] this is a comunication over the KANTCENTRUM

hope you don't mind but I ran the text through a translator, parts are

hers Fans of lace, For a few months, the Center of the Lace of Bruges
(Kantcentrum) has been managed by a new Office of direction. This new
direction could conclude an agreement with the municipal council from
the town of Bruges and the owners of the buildings (the family De
Limburg Stirum). A few months ago still, that was announced very badly
for the ASBL. But a group of Brugean decided that Kantcentrum was not
to disappear. They were quickly joined by a broad group of support.
The professors, the trainees, the personnel (where a reorganization
was to take place, the fixed telephones passed from 4 to 2) are
delighted by a new wind in poop. The new Office of direction (with the
new delegate president and business man Wim Decraemer, the president
and journalist with the VRT, the radio/Flemish television, Nico
Blontrock and member of the Office, the Brugean bookseller Koen De
Meester) started again bonds which found their place, of the relations
lost in the past and which were joined again. Review KANT soon will
benefit from a new page layout. The courses of summer will again be
organized as well as new a three years formation for the lace
professors. In addition, the occupation of the historical buildings of
XVème century expires. However, the owner invested a half-million euro
in the restoration and the enlarging of the old lace school, a little
further in Balstraat. A new lace Museum (with laces of the municipal
collection) will open there too. Relations with our “concucollègues”,
in other words the other tradesmen Brugean dentelliers, will be also
restored. Soon, of the projects will be carried out in collaboration
with those. The center of Tourism of Bruges strongly will promote all
that relates to lace like cultural events, in Belgium like abroad.
Kantcentrum lives again. It abounds with activities, it considers many
projects, the future offers a quantity of opportunities to us.

Re: [lace] Preference of book format

2007-10-25 Thread Barron
I'm doing an informal survey and would value your opinions. Would you purchase
a pattern book on CD if the CD insert showed thumbnail photos of the finished
lace? If you had the choice of a printed pattern book--let's assume that it is
not a hardbound volume--or a CD, which would you purchase? If you opted for
the CD, how would you use it--to print out the entire publication, or only
those patterns that were of specific interest to you. What would you consider
a fair price for a pattern book on CD?

Hi, it's a book for me too, I'd be
worried about obsolescence, though a CD to print prickings out from would be
handy - one of my bugbears with books is prickings printed too close to the
spine.

Re: [lace] metallic thread aid on bobbin

2007-05-18 Thread Barron
I think when this was discussed on the list last time someone came up with the
idea of using the tiny little hair clips to hold metallic thread in place. I
tried it and it worked a treat. These clips close to about a pencil thickness
and sort of mesh each side of the bobbin but I can't remember what they are
called, not so popular now but I'm sure still available
jenny barron

Hi everyone
This from Beth's message:

.. the slightly thicker necks on the bayeux is better on the thread.
Still, the half hitches either get tight and kink, or work their way loose.
I'm constantly readjusting
the thread at the bobbin. You also have to be careful in adjusting your
stitches - tightening the thread. The Rajmahal is a metal wrapped core, so
the veneer (sp?)
 can flake off). ...

reminded me of the 'bobbin cuffs' a clever lace friend of mine made to mind
metallic thread on her continental bobbins --

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he
put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: Free to good home you
want it, you take it.

For three days the fridge sat there without even one person looking twice at
it. He eventually decided that people were too un-trusting of this deal. It
looked to good to be true, so he changed the sign to read: Fridge for sale
$50. The next day someone stole it.

Caution.. They Walk Among Us

While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which
direction was north because, he explained, he didn't want the sun waking him up

[lace-chat] Funeral Procession

2007-04-25 Thread Barron
as the list is quiet I thought I'd forward this joke, might have seen it before

jenny barron
NE Scotland

FUNERAL PROCESSION:

A woman was leaving a convenience store with her morning coffee when she
noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery.

A long black hearse was followed by a second long black hearse about 50 feet
behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary woman walking
a pit bull on a leash. Behind her a short distance back, were about 200 women
walking single file.

The woman couldn't stand her curiosity. She respectfully approached the woman
walking the dog and said, I am so sorry for your loss, I know now is a bad
time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is
it?

My husband's.

What happened to him?

The woman replied, My dog attacked and killed him.

She inquired further, Well, who is in the second hearse?

The woman answered, My mother-in-law. She was trying to help my husband when
the dog turned on her.

A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two women.

Can I borrow the dog?

Get in line.

Margaret and Bert, an elderly couple, live in California. Bert has always
wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so, seeing some on sale, he buys them
and wears them home,
walking proudly.
He walks into the house and says to his wife; Notice anything different about
me?
Margaret looks him over and says Nope.
Frustrated, Bert storms off into the bedroom, undresses, and walks back into
the room, completely naked except for the boots.
Again he asks, a little louder this time, Notice anything different NOW!
Margaret looks up and says; Bert, what's different? It's hanging down today,
it was hanging down yesterday, and it'll be hanging down again tomorrow.
Furious, Bert yells; AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S Hanging DOWN MARGARET?
Nope she replies.
IT'S HANGING DOWN BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!
Margaret replies, Shoulda bought a hat Bert, you shoulda bought a hat!

[lace] 24 hearts in bobbinlace

Hi I've just bought 24 hearts in bobbin lace by Lene Bjorn and they are so
lovely I want to start tonight. The thread called for is 28/2, can't find any
mention of a maker. I'm assuming linen and the only one I can find in my
edition of 'Brenda'(bought 5 years ago so a wee bit out of date - must treat
myself to the new edition) is Juul's 28/2 at 19 wraps. Don't have any of that
to hand but I do have a variegated Altin Basak 50 which is 20 wraps. Any ideas
if I'm in the right area or way out?

Re: [lace] Threads and pins

2006-11-14 Thread Barron
Barbara Joyce said about using a roller with a looped pricking...

Here's my
question: I've been cautioned that with this method there is a
risk that the
pricking might not stay exactly vertical but might
eventually work its way
slightly diagonal.

Is this really a problem/risk? If so, how can I avoid it?
I've not had that problem - only done a few inches so far on my garter but
I've had the problen of the pricking rising up from the surface of the roller.
I don't press the pins down as I'm going to be pulling them out as the roller
turns. Is it inevitable or am I just angling my pins wrongly?

Nobody can believe that any baby can weigh in at 25 pounds, but the

my

Congratulations showered him from all around and many exclamations of
STREWTH were heard. One woman even fainted due to sympathy pains.

Two weeks later the Queenslander returns to the bar. The bartender says
You're the father of that typical Queensland baby that weighed 25 pounds

were going to call you. So, how much does he weigh?

The proud father answers, ³17 pounds The bartender is puzzled and

What happened? He weighed 25 pounds the day he was born.

Just discovered a new lace tool today. I bought a needle tugger meant for
pulling needles through thick fabric and spotted the potential for pulling pins
out of the pillow - I'd use tweezers but it puts my teeth on edge - it's
basically a thin plastic tube you put over the pin and pinch and then pull out.
I suffer from nails that peel and shred when I pull out any quantity of pins so

prick out. The thing is the pricking looks out of sync to me. Are there any
computer programmes - lace design or some sort of graphic package - that will
allow me to scan the pricking and true up the dots?I'm not being fanatical
about this - if I have to redraft it with pen and paper I'll live with itg.

Hi Jenny

Imagine a cross like the Red Cross cross - nice big and fat with thick arms
and a thick bit in the centre of the cross. The centre square bit bit is
the square that you put your pillow on and then the arms of the cross fold
over. 2 of them will just cover the pillow to keep it clean and the other 2
arms of the cross have a handle in them at the far outside edges of the
arms. They meet and form the handles when you fold then in towards the
centre. The handles are usually just a bit of dowel or even a posh bit of
timber which is fed into the entire edge of the outside of the last 2 arms
and they have a D shaped cut out of the fabric so you can grasp the
handle.

Hope that helps.

I fancy making a new pillow bag for myself out of some patchwork I am about to
quilt - new hobby, must make use of practice pieces - and I thought instead of
the normal bag that puts the pillow on it's side when being carried I'd like
the kind that leaves the pillow flat.

But - now I come to the actual planning of such a bag I realise I've no real
idea of how to make one. Do you start with a square of fabric big enough to
place the pillow in the middle and fold the corners over the pillow with a bit
to spare? Anyone ever made one who could point me in the right direction?

Last Saturday night; a young chap was walking home from a club.

It was a cold, wet, windy evening, and he was tired and freezing.
Most of the streetlights in the area were broken, and the silence was
only broken by the occasional sound of a stray cat sifting through a
dustbin.
Then suddenly he heard a strange noise...

BUMP

BUMP

BUMP

Startled by this, he turned, and to his amazement, through the driving
rain, he saw the faint outline of a large box turning into his road.

BUMP

BUMP

BUMP

He froze to the spot, he couldn't believe his eyes, as the box
approached from the shadows, he was able to make out its shape more
clearlyIt was a coffin.

Not wanting anything to do with this, he put his head down and started
walking briskly home.

BUMP

BUMP

BUMP

He could feel the coffin gaining on him, he started walking
faster.

BUMPBUMP..

BUMPBUMP.

BUMPBUMP..

The coffin was closing with his every step, he started to jog, but he
heard the coffin speed up after him..

BUMPBUMP..BUMP..

BUMPBUMP..BUMP..

BUMPBUMP..BUMP..

He started to sprint, but so did the coffin .

BUMP...BUMP...BUMP...BUMP.

BUMP...BUMP...BUMP...BUMP.

BUMP...BUMP...BUMP...BUMP.

Eventually he made it to his front door, but he knew the coffin was Only
seconds behind. Fumbling around in his pocket, he pulled out his keys,
His hand trembling, he managed to open the lock, he dived inside
slamming The front door behind him. He shot into his front room, and
lumped into his comfy chair.

Suddenly there was a loud crash, as the coffin smashed its way through
the front door. The force of the impact broke the lock off the coffin
allowing the lid to swing freely on its rusty hinges as it continued Its
chase.

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

BUMP...SCREECH...BUMP...SCREECH...

In horror the young lad fled again, as fast as his shaking legs could
take him he bolted upstairs to the bathroom and locked the door

BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...

BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...

BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...BUMP...SCREECH...HOP...

The coffin again gave chase up the stairs, across the landing and
launched itself at the bathroom door. With an almighty smash, the
Bathroom door flew off its hinges

The coffin stood in the doorway, then started to approach the

With petrol prices predicted to go above GBP1.00 a litre next week,

just read in my morning local paper that fuel prices are already £1/litre in
Inverness(north east of Scotland) - just 50 miles up the road from me - of
course our fuel prices were already more expensive so we had a head start on
the south coast of England - our local businesses are always complaining about
the price of fuel up here. Most of the price is tax of course - has anyone ever
heard of a tax going down vbg

He addressed the man, Can you name your wife's favorite flower?
Tom leaned over, touched his wife's arm gently and whispered, It's

 Pillsbury, isn't it?

dominique from Paris, France ..

Hi Dominique, I think Pillsbury is a brand of baking flour not the type you
