I believe I have seen antique Women's shoes/boots with the MOP and/or Glass
buttons. These would be on 'dressy' shoes and the leather ones on 'everyday'
women's and childrens shoes.Did men's shoes of the same period have buttons
also? I don't recall having seen any. Lorri F

Hello All! Thank you for the explanation! I didn't realize that boot
buttons were leather. The glass MOP ones I own were purchased as shoe
buttons, so perhaps there is a difference?! But you've given me a spring
project--to check two pairs of vintage childrens boots (over the ankle) to see
what sort of buttons are attached. Details, details. Sincerely, Susan

[lace] Buttons

2009-09-30 Thread Alex Stillwell
Dear Sue

I think the buttons you are referring to were used on overalls and other
protective work clothes. They were secured by a type of mini hair grip and
could be removed for laundering so that the garment could be pressed by a
press rather than ironing, then the buttons could be replaced. I had the
plastic version of the buttons with these fasteners them down my lab coat in
the 1960s and the holes the metal shanks of the buttons passed through were
about 1/10 inch wide and neatened like buttonholes.

Happy lacemaking

[lace] Buttons on Lace pillows

2007-07-03 Thread Jenny De Angelis
According to Christine Springett's book Success to the Lace Pillow which is
about old bobbins there are two reasons why you might find a Button included
in the spangle of an antique bobbin.

One reason is because when a spinster, or Old Maid, lace maker who everyone
thought would never marry suddenly found herself a husband then her
lacemaking friends would take a man's trouser button and put it in amongst
the beads on one the spinsters bobbins.

The other reason is that when a young couple got engaged to be married the
boy, being a poorly paid agricultural worker and the girl a poorly paid
lacemaker, no one could afford an engagement ring so he would give his
sweetheart a button from his waistcoat instead and she would include that
button in one of her spangles.

[lace] Lace Buttons - Birds eye buttons

2007-03-22 Thread Jean Nathan

Last Saturday, at Poole Bobbin Lace Circle meeting, Thelma Johns, an expert
on Dorset buttons gave us a talk on their history and a demonstration of
their construction. We also had a chance to have a go at making one.

She didn't mention Bird's eye buttons, but searching for more information on
Dorset buttons, I came on the following site, which has books and kits for
sale for these buttons. The 'Fact File' is described as A5 size booklet
with 16 pages. Containing detailed instructions for making:-Crosswheels,
Crosswheel variations, Beaded crosswheels, High tops and Dorset Knobs,
Bird's eyes - two methods, Singletons, Sea-urchin buttons.

Two pages of colour photographs.

Cost GBP6.00 inc postage within the UK GBP7.00 inc postage outside the UK.

She takes Paypal.

I know nothing more than that, but I'm going to order a copy and the

Hello Jean,

I've just got in from our lace class at Broadstone and am catching up with
the e-mails. I've got both these books, Jean. Very good they are too. The
author is Marion Howitt, who was taught by Thelma Johns. Birds Eye buttons
are very easy to make. I wonder if the Dorset ones are the same as the
original enquiry. If you look at the Fact File page you will see Birds Eyes
in the middle column, second and third down, and second down on the right
hand column. They are soft buttons not having a horn disc or metal ring
inside, so were often used on baby clothes.

PS Just got the Apr/May edition of 'Stitch' which has an article about
Dorset Feather Stitchery, developed from the embroidery on agricultural
labourers' smocks. One Photo clearly shows Cartwheel buttons.

Dear Jean and Others who love books,

This is interesting. I used to write reviews for books related to lace that
were not likely to be covered in our various lace bulletins issued by lace
guilds - to fill what I considered a gap in lace-related information..

However, I have tapered way off, because of little response, sometimes none,
from the list. A review is a gift - of time, sometimes of money.

If you do not know about these books, you learn about them when they are out
of print and have become very very expensive. This is an example.

2007-02-10 Thread Adele Shaak

Hi Everybody:

The prices Jean got from amazon.co.uk for the 50 Heirloom Buttons to
Make book show how you need to shop around when you're on the Internet.

I popped the title into http://www.abebooks.com and got three results,
one here in Canada for $32.95 (about 15 British pounds) and one in the
US for $35.95 US (about 18 British pounds ?) and another in the US for
$60 US. (what's that, 35 pounds?)

Once any seller pays for their web presence, it doesn't really cost
them much more to advertise a book, so there are a few people who will
put a book on the web with a ridiculous price, hoping somebody will buy
it.

I always try abebooks.com because there are a lot of international
retailers on it and I have a reasonable chance of finding somebody in
Canada (hurray! no customs! No delay!). Also, since the ABE (Advanced
Book Exchange) is a linkage of many many small bookshops all around the
world, I'm usually dealing with smaller businesses and not giant ones.

Dorset buttons, as used on the traditional smocks worn by agricultural

Wow! Those are wonderful (and I don't see anything wrong with the

Wood-something, in Gettysburg, PA), though I wouldn't want to be making
even those for 60 cents a button... :)

I've often been envious of people who can (and even like to, much to my
amazement) make NL, because of the rich, 3-D texture that NL has. Could
be why I fell so hopelessly in love with Rosalibre, which imitates the
same feats with plain, old, bobbins.

Recently I spoke to a gentleman about an matter unrelated to Lace ( actually

As a follow up, the Lady collector send me the following information ;

The button collecting Club began in 1960 and is a very friendly group of
ladies in the 50 plus age range right up to 91. Buttons are art in miniature,
signposts to the evolution of fashion and society and I really enjoy learning
of their history, and those who manufactured them. It's a great hobby.

Yes, Hendrika, there are lace buttons. Subject was discussed on Arachne
12/20/99. Two very nice books:

50 Heirloom Buttons to Make
By Nancy Nehring
Taunton Press (Which publishes the magazine Threads
List price $20 in U.S.
ISBN 1-56158-146-1
1996, 113 pages, paper cover, many color photos

Buttons made using following techniques or materials: Braid (based on
needlelace designs and sailor's knots using braid), cord, crochet, darned net
(on
tulle), Dorset (a needlelace technique), fabric, frog closures, knotted, Leek
(thread wrapped and needle-woven on button form), needlelace, ribbon,
shirtwaist
(a needlelace), Teneriffe (lace made, then mounted on button mold), Victorian
woven, and others.

Interesting comment in text: During the Middle Ages, after the
establishment of artisan guilds..button makers belonged to the same guild
as
lacemakers, and naturally, lacemaking techniques were incorporated into
buttons.

The Button Craft Book
By Dawn Cusick
Sterling/Lark
List price $25 in U.S., $35 in Canada
ISBN 0-8069-3197-3
1995, 128 pages, hard cover, many color photos

Instructions for how to make buttons, and clothes/crafted items made with the
buttons.
-
There are instructions in a variety of other books. However, I think these
two will give you a good start on the history and how the buttons are made and
used. These should be easy to borrow from a library or purchase in Canada.
