Re: [LU] 2-1

2012-04-26 Thread Brendan McWilliams

H, i have to disagree slightly.

FCB and RM are both sides of the same coin: enormous, big histories, huge
support, devour the majority of the tv rights from La Liga making it evermore
uncompetitive and neither are true businesses - at least if we consider the
debt they carry.

I came to Spain as a neutral and in fact went to the Bernabeu 2 days after my
arrival in Madid for a cup match with an entirely open mind and without
prejudicenow several years later, the lesser of the two evils by any
measurement is FCB. RM are tedious beyond belief.

This week apart, this present FCB team and squad are the best I've seen at any
time and i'd like to know of what team has ever played with style in the modern
era. Their squad has been in large part developed from their youth teams and
surely that is the aim of all clubs?

RM on the other hand dominate EVERYTHING in Spain, you'll find more coverage
regarding them on the main news (i.e. equivalent of BBC1) than you'll find on
e.g. Syria, Afghanistan, you name it. Their fans are wildly disloyal and expect
Harlem Globetrotter levels of performance and see conspiracies everywhere when
a team has the temerity to put it up to them and shock horror beat them.

The atmosphere in both grounds is usually pitiful - but that's more due to
their being all seating - and if anything you'll find that in the Bernabeu the
fans will quite often start whistling or booing at half time if they have not
scored.

The common charge that RM were Franco's XI is not strictly true as other
teams won just as much domestically - although di Stefano mysteriously went to
Madrid and not Barcelona... - but it's a charge often levelled due to their
main competition at the time being Athletic Bilbao and FCB - both nationalist
strongholds.

Anyhow, i was disappointed that FCB were knocked out by Chelsea - a club that
is the anithesis of all that football should be about and whilst i wasn't
too disappointed last night when RM got knocked out, it's impossible to say
anything bad about Mou this year (poking his finger in the FCB coach apart):
great powerful football and CR7 is only a whisker behind Messi.

Mario Gomez will charge through Chelsea and Bayern should easily win it, plus
it's in their stadium.

Yeah, but no Leeds supporter can support Barcelona either. Whining sods,
always getting favour from the refs and UEFA. I will never forget how somehow
they managed to get FOUR MINUTES of injury time at Elland Road in a half when
the physios hadn't come on once (not to mention getting Gordon McQueen sent
off in 1975). And I can't stand how so many folks in the news media just fawn
over them, not to mention the way people all over the world who've never been
to Spain, let alone Catalonia, declare themselves Barcelona fans. Good

Re: [LU] New levels of indifference

2012-06-25 Thread Brendan McWilliams

It pains me to say it, but Ireland were definitely the worst team in the whole
tournament, closely followed by England - yes, even worse than Greece.

I can't watch an England match these days without a non-stop pass count in my
head: 1-2-3, ball lost and repeat... It is STAGGERING to see how England cannot
maintain possession. The two good moves they had yesterday were the result of a
string of consecutive passes, but otherwise it was constant losing the ball and
crazy champagne passes. Truly amazing, like they were allergic to it. I used
to take huge enjoyment from England being hopeless, but now it's just
ridiculous. Young, Milner and yes, Gerrard, truly shocking.

For those of you who haven't seen them, check out Liam Brady and Eamon Dunphy's
half and full time analysis from RTE on YouTube. Priceless.

On to my adopted Spain: what IS annoying though is that people say Spain's
games are boring like it was Spain's fault, WTF! Spain are the Barcelona of
world football at present obviously but France did a Chelsea and employed a
blanket defence. Understandable tactic from the french, but if you pick 2 extra
defenders you're gonna get the ball even less. Yes the game was a bit dull but
blaming the spanish is lunacy.

is just awful. He loses the ball almost every time he gets it.

Re: [LU] NON LU: Spain Brazil

2013-07-02 Thread Brendan McWilliams
DISCLAIMER: living in Spain, married to a spaniard, half spanish kids etc, thus
been roused from lurking with this thread. :-

This recent line on Spain being boring and some being glad they lost (not just
Dave Sutton below), criticism of their footballing style - if there was such a
thing as footballing BLASPHEMY or luddite then this is it.

Rather, it's more a case of simply turning on a team that have won too much
lately i.e. there was no criticism of Spain's victories in '08 or '10 when they
were the underdog and shedding their perennial loser bottler tag. We all tire
of the same team winning too much (apart from our beloved LUFC).

Recall that it was Zidane and France who put Spain out of the WC in 2006 BUT
against a Spanish team which had HALF of the players who played on Sunday.
Since then Spain changed their style a little i.e. they have had different
styles and didn't do it, but this latter one has been SO successful. If it's
not broke...?Possesion football works for them but yes they should start
looking at the Bayern Munich way with more power in central midfield - which is
exactly what Brazil did with Paulinho and Dias - which Busquets tries to do but
has faded a lot lately..

Let's not forget also that Spain were KNACKERED from both the long season and
having played ET + penalties just two days before. I still can't understand why
those who go to the Confed don't take more B players and rest the older ones.

But have they been boring? For me, absolutely not. Who remembers the tedium of
France winning in '98 or '00 with Guivarche and Dugarry, with only ZZ to inject
some quality? Or Greece in 2004, which was worse than anything Jack Charlton
had the Rep playing in the 90s. Brazil in '94? Dire dire football.

Would I rather watch Spain mix it up like England and try any number of
unsuccessful champagne passes like Gerrard up in the air to Carroll? Erm, pass
on that one (see what i did there... :-).It's not fair to mention England
here of course, but they are almost a footballing opposite. In recent years i
can't watch England play without constantly counting the number of consecutive
passes they make to each other - it rarely gets above 3 or 4. When England wins
playing like that, is it exciting? For England fans yes, but you'll know it'll
get found out and as a neutral, i think it's a sh1t way to play and no, it's
rarely exciting.

Spain's possession football also suits the fact that a number of their players
in the Spain first XI are actually not quite World Class but still they still
have won: Torres (on the slide since 2008/9), Arbeloa (truly woeful the other
night), Pique (good footballer, poor defender), Casillas (Mou was in large part
right, although great at 1-on-1s), Navas has doesn't score goals and the final
pass hasn't been great of late, then theres Valdés (a David James calamity
every 5th match).

Not to mention the fact that this is actually a VERY small team physically. Is
it boring to see little guys dink their way past clodders in midfield and
keeping the ball off them? It is FOOT ball afterall and anything that is not
lamping a ball up to a beanpole donkey up front for a hopeful knockdown cannot
be bad.

Again, i'm biased, but the FC Barcelona of the last 4 years has been IMHO the
best quality football there has ever been and if you're not excited by Messi or
Villa then fek knows.

Hasta Luego! :-

I see your point, but you are comparing a current day 2nd tier English club
with the World Champions. Well done to Spain and Barcelona for their
 respective triumphs, but
they have created a bland rigid style with no option to change and
presumably no intention of ever trying to. (Whilst Pat Nevin's observations
were interesting, it doesn't change the fact that it's boring.)
This was clearly shown when they were losing 3-0 to Brazil the other night
and a change of tempo / style was needed and they weren't able to. A lot of
managers say that they concentrate on what their own team does and not worry
 so much about the oppo.
I believe this idea to have faults. It's the team that can adapt best to
what the opposition is doing that bosses the game. Spain could not adapt to
what Brazil were throwing at them
and just continued as they were and went on to concede more goals.

I don't consider myself audacious one bit, but the Spanish way which has
worked for them for so long is being replaced by a multi paced / styled
system as shown by the likes of Brazil and Bayern.
And the big point - it's great to watch!

One or two players with 10% of the likes of Iniesta's quality would be
dragged down by the other donkeys in the team. Think big, we need a bunch of
them. I wouldn't sell my soul
 though to

Re: [LU] NON LU: Spain Brazil

2013-07-02 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Again, see previous email and my disclaimer and bias, BUT there have of
course been some boring matches with Spain, largely during Euro 2012 - but one
has to blame the opposition they were up against and the tactics they employed
to negate them.

Two dire games involving Spain were the matches last year against France (Euro
QF) and then the SF against Portugal.

Both France Portugal did nothing whatsoever beyond parking the bus as per
what Mourinho had Inter Milan do against FCB in the CL Semi final of 2010. Both
oppositions had 1 true creative player - Ribery, Ronaldo - with the remainder
not likely to thread a pass like Pirlo.

The surprise of Euro 2012 was how Italy didn't employ anthing remotely like
catenaccio in any match - in particular the first game against Spain which was
an absolute belter. Italy again tried to play and attack in the final, and
Spain took full advantage in a far from boring match.

Iniesta and Xavi are simply not capable of playing boring football - they are
constantly looking for the killer pass and if they can't do that they short
pass it keeping possession.

Anyhow, with new signing Luke Murphy we'll be making the same complaint very
soon!

Btw, any takers yet for Tonge, Brown-eh, Pugh, Pearce, Varney and Norris yet???
Actually, do we want rid of Tonge?

on occasion - mind numbing stuff . Some teams will find them out, most won't!

To deny their absolute class is obtuse, but to deny how boring they are 'at

2013-08-26 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Mourinho is hugely entertaining at the beginning of his 3 year max stay at Club
X, then around the mid way point of the 2nd season he becomes a bit of a pain
with the whole paranoia and victimisation tactics he employs to motivate the
players.

This accelerates into the 3rd season at which point he will have then lost the
players, the press genuinely get fed up with him, he then invents the lack of
backing from the club and/or not selecting a high profile club player - then
he moves on.

As to Chelsea itself, they have long replaced Man U at the top of my least
liked clubs.

44pts now and GD of -2, we'll need to get to 60pts from the remaining 12
games... it's gonna be tight.

If we do go into Admin briefly, what happens during the summer and next season

hi All,

my football club blacklist contains the same clubs, but their positions are
interchangeable, and at present it goes like:

1) Chelsea (by a considerable distance)

2) One of the Old Firm Teams (;-)

3) MUFC

4) Real Madrid

After yet another night of anti-football from a Mourinho XI vs Atlético last
night, how anyone can wish that team well in any competition is beyond me.

Due to 3) i've automatically wanted City to do well and ALSO Liverpool.

Given that Liverpool are playing great football, Suarez is genuinely world
class - like him or not - lots of young players, and let's not forget their
wonderfully named manager 

So on Sunday, come on Liverpool!

Re: [LU] Non lu

2014-06-26 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi,

hmmm, there really is quite an extraordinary amount of hysteria about this
latest episode from the new favourite pantomine villain that is Luis Suarez.

What he has now done at least twice and looking like a third is something my 2
year old is now growing out of in the nursery. All this he's not right is
he, for goodness sake... Clearly it's a reflex that gets the better of him
when the red mist comes swirling down but why is it worse than some legendary
assaults from e.g. Scholes, Shearer or Keane where the recipients have been
booted in the face or had a career ending broken leg? It's hardly cause for
lining up ten clinical psychologists from Harley Street to give an opinion is
it? Is it worse than gouging someone's EYE in rugby?

As to his diving - alas rampant in the game - they're just as bad as any of the
laughable falls of Ashley Young - if only he got taken to task for his.

Quite why this is THE headline news, and why the english media needs a baddie
every tournament is on the whole a bit sad to say the least. This is the same
media who will have his face all over the place for the next SUPER DUPER S*Y
SUNDAY BETTER THAN THE LAST ONE etc etc. Then the muppet journalists hoping for
his execution now like he ate live new born babies will wait a month or two
then trot out the usual redemption articles.

There are two outcomes: he'll get suspended for 1 match for the unseen mild
head butt, or they'll grow a pair and ban him for a significant number of games
for the bite. End of etc, can we please stop with the witch hunt. How about a
witchhunt on something significant like why Cameron managed to create a
scenario whereby the Hacking trial could be declared null and void without a
re-trial.

Anyhow, rant over, it was more about the media than Suarez behaving worse than
my 2 year old i really have become my Dad, shouting at the TV and
everything. :-

If you were English then of course the Scotland match would have been
enjoyable, not to mention the whalloping the Dutch got and the 4-1.

Otherwise my memories of that tournament were low scoring in general and the
knockout stages being absolutely dire.

What a great game, it had everything. I'm knackered just watching it!

This tournament is probably best I've ever seen (at least since Euro 96)
  -
no negative play, only attacking fast footy. I'm loving it!

I think I've finally grown up - I'm not bothered who wins (I don't hate
  anyone anymore)...
Brazil: the support is fantastic plus they sound like a pub side - Joe,
  Bernard, William, Fred and Hulk!
Argies: I just love watching Messi.
Germany: I love their football model so want them to prosper.
(They're the teams we're supposed to dislike)
As for the rest - some great attacking teams. Holland are my tip - after
  they tore Spain apart.

As a nation, we're miles off. I agree with someone else's point - as long
as Sky pump millions into the Premier League we won't see young English
players coming thru as foreign players will come for the money.

I guess I'll come down to reality with a bump come early August when I
travel to Millwall or see our first home game! Here's hoping I'm wrong
  and
Hockawho is the amswer. I'm the eternal optimist where Leeds is concerned

Anyway, roll on Colombia v Suarez-less Uruguay. 3-1 ti Colombia.

Re: [LU] Squad arrived in Italy

2014-07-01 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Well, look on the bright side - almost all the rubbish that we all wanted rid
from last season are now gone with even Cameron Stewart now signing for
Ipswich, and doubts about Paddy Kenny (have you seen the size of him!?).

If it's true that Fulham have offered 10m for McCormack, pff, that has to be
accepted. Obviously the question remains as to what happens with that money,
but 10m is unreal at this level and cannot be rejected.

That said, without a influx of about 10 significant players in the next 2 weeks
it looks very bad indeed.

Astonishing that Zac Thompson still hangs on in there without ever
seriously threatening the first team for getting on 5 years now. He has the
survivial skills of a cockroach in the nuclear war. Whatever drama and cuts

Re: [LU] ...and so it begins

2014-07-03 Thread Brendan McWilliams
At present a growing sense of nervousness but note that:

1) when I/we were doing our lists at the end of last season and who you'd
happily see never play again, they are now almost all gone. Can't fault him
there.

2) Transfers are only permitted from July 1st, the transfer embargo was only
lifted yesterday, and we've not had great success with free transfers in the
past have we?

3) I've no doubt he's lined up a string of Italians from Serie B etc - let's
hope they adapt quickly, which is not usually the case i'm afraid at any level
(Vialli, Zola apart) in the english league system for some reason.

4) Ross was ALWAYS going to go, and frankly anything over 5m (not to mention
the much mentioned 10m from Fulham) cannot be rejected by a Championship club.
Note also he'd a great season last year, but the previous three were not so
dazzling.

5) Paddy Kenny. The #17 story is obviously nonsense, and i too also think that
it's more to do with the fact that he barely played the last 4 months last
season, is getting on and is about twice the width I am.

6) The club was losing 1m a month, and the fair play rules mean that you can't
throw (a lot) of money at it?

7) Buyback of ER is surely a maze of complications due to you know who.

However, there's no getting away from the fact that it's going to end badly
with Hockaday - 4 games max.

But could it be that, maybe just maybe, it works out? Must we always go with
the usual recyling of managers that at this level that brings nothing? OK, here
I'm being wildly optimistic.

Re: [LU] Fixtures

2014-07-29 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi all,

I still think that Cellino has done everything that i would have liked a new
owner to have done apart from two things:

1) the Hock

2) an influx of players not used to the english 2nd tier.

3) get the finances under control

The zillions of mails on The Hock are largely merited but miss one thing - he's
got about 3 or 4 games to make it or he's out. End of. I reckon Zola will be
installed before the end of Sept.

For the new players, i think it was Dave Nattan that pointed out that the
starting XI will still largely be half to two thirds of those from last
season...and in any case, Kebe Stewart were used to the Championship and look
how well that went.

I'm only moderately concerned:

- with the exception of McCormack we've kept the good players and binned out
the dross entirely (except maybe Kenny Warnock and i too hold some belief
that Morison may come good)

 - if we have a bad start it'll be short, Cellino will simply boot him out
after 3 or 4 games.

On a different note, is Twitter killing this list?

As for Warnock, it's too bad that he's not seeing out the rest of the season
but why would you give him a contract after last season?

Can't fault Il Presidente on both counts, there is just that small matter of
being 4th bottom only now...

Betty - can't believe you went back down to Broken Britain ;-

  Refreshing.
Refreshing indeed though the last line saying He is the best coach we could
have at the moment makes me wonder how long that moment will last.
Still, no Becchio is please any way you look at it.

Re: [LU] Hard Division next year

2016-05-12 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi,

the same thing is said every year: the three coming down from above and the
in-form recently promoted teams will be hard to handle etc. but it rarely makes
the division any more difficult.

I have full confidence in our ability to reach mid table mediocrity
irrespective of newcomers.

Of the three who come down from the Prem, typically one goes straight back up
automatically, one might make the Playoffs, one usually self combusts and has
serious problems (e.g. QPR, Wigan). OF those that come up from L1, as likely
as not one or two will go down.

Re: [LU] NonLU: Radiohead

2016-05-12 Thread Brendan McWilliams
I thought "OK Computer" and "The Bends" were not for me upon early listenings,
then slowly but surely it sinks into the point that nearly 20 years later
OK Computer is still for me my favourite album. Then again, I've fallen off the
musical map in recent years so my judgement is way off these days.

Congratulations Rob - writing a book is impressive enough, getting someone to
take a punt on it and publish, that's really impressive.

That must be 3 published authors on the list - Dr Mike, Chris, and now Rob?

Re: [LU] Liverpool 2 Leeds 0

2016-12-01 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Hi all,

from my armchair in foreign climes:

- Silvestri should have came out, and when he does come out take everything
with him as a proper keeper should. The fact is he lacks a pair so hard to say
if he's a better option than Green, Green by a whisker probably.

- Sacko has got worse as the season has gone on,

- sorry, Doukara is still terrible even with renewed desire these days,

- i can't for the life of me understand the abuse Wood gets. I mean, if he got
those goals AND did the rest, he wouldn't still be with us now would he?

- but no matter how limited Wood is, he's light years ahead of Becchio, he got
the odd goal but he was shockingly bad.

- my man Eunan I expect to shine with Bridcutt alongside him, he's been
inconsistent...

The squad loanees are: Hernandez, Bartley, Jannsoon (automatic purchase on 20
appearances), Grimes and Sacko right?

Stating the bleeding obvious but of that lot: Bartley & Jansson obviously,
question mark over Hernandez, and so far a no for Grimes and Sacko.

Regards,

BMW

I said the first time I saw him preseason at Peterborough, Sacko is Carton
Palmer on Red Bull. He has a worse first touch than our old mate Becchio and
I haven't seen him hit the target once yet.
However in his defence he does work exceptionally hard when tracking back to
help his full back.

Re: [LU] Fwd: None LU: Andy Murray World Number one (;-))

2017-06-05 Thread Brendan McWilliams
Not really a fan of Tennis but I always support Andy Murray, precisely because
he's Scottish, and always wanted Henman to win.

Clearly lots of English have taken against Murray for his _possibly_ wanting
Scottish independence.

However I want Federer to win every match as he's been the most stylish and
graceful player I can remember.

PS I reserve my anyone-but-the-english primarily for the soccer and in
particular the rugby.

sport, although it's amazing how many people watch or play sport yet don't
know that.

I did indeed love good old "Come on" Tim. Winning is not everything in
sport, although it's amazing how many people watch or play sport yet don't
know that.

It'll last at most 2 or 3 months. His post match press conferences here in

_IF_ it works out, the players will be be exhausted and spent by March.

Maybe the delay shows that all sides are serious, but want to get things right.
It seems that his renumeration package is not an issue, but more the
contractual terms around what he's in control of.

I'm still not 100% convinced he is the "one". I think his lack of English is
going to be an issue. People point to Pottetchino as an example of successful
non English speakers. Correct but there are loads more examples (Puel a very
recent one) when it may have been a factor in their failure. Plus Bielsa is a
very different kettle of fish, he old at 62 as well. His last 2 jobs have
blown up and that was with better squads in the countries top leagues.

How are many of our players going to learn a new system in a foreign language
in a few weeks? Even if we buy 5 or 6 new first teamers, that's even more
issues of integration.

I've read lots of admiring articles about his tactic's but hey all also mention
a very fiery temperament and I'm not sure that is what's needed.

Is there anyone 100% convinced of this appointment who can calm me down?

Re: [LU] Tippy Tappy

2018-07-02 Thread Brendan McWilliams

Hi all,

provoked into a semi-defence of Spain

Their way of playing - possession football on the ground - remains the best
quality football over the last decade. Both RM & FCB play this way, it's a joy
to watch, has been a joy to watch now for years and you only need to look at
their European trophies these last 10 years.

RM's midfield has the likes of Modric, Isco and Kroos, FCB have Coutinho,
Rakitic and Messi - and none of them know how to tackle because they don't have
to with possession football.

(Note also that RM haven't really spent that much money recently - their last
splurge was 3 years ago, although I suspect that's about to change.)

Spain's abysmal failure is due to:
- their players and style being so good that every single frickin' team that
plays them now has already given up before they start. They park the bus (and
then some) and go for a 0-0 draw. Russia in particular yesterday, Iran before
them. Even Portugal sat back. Saying Spain are boring, yet overlooking the
opposition is plain silly. When Mou's teams do nothing and shut up shop, the
other team are accused of being dull?

- half the team being from a club team that has Ronaldo, the other half a club
team that has Messi. So these guys are all waiting around for a spark of genius
that isn't coming, then it's just giving it to someone else hoping they'll have
that creativity. Xavi was able to do it, Isco is nearly there, but otherwise
they're all passing around hoping for something to happen. You could say the
same for Germany too - all waiting for a killer pass or touch of magic that
never came.

- So, if it's playing against 9 or 10 defenders and you can't dribble through
THAT many or thread a pass through minimal space, then the only options are
crosses from the wings or long balls from deep. Whilst Hierro played Costa up
front, nobody played off him (like what Griezmann does in ATM) and so he's
totally isolated and looks like a lemon but when used right, he's outstanding.
No wingers: yesterday they had Asensio (not a winger really), Isco went into
the middle and Silva is brilliant but not a winger either.

All this BS about tiki-taka being dull etc - what do you do if the other team
doesn't want to play? You give them the ball? They usually don't even want the
ball as they'll just lose it going forward, then get caught. In short, Spain
should have went longer with speed - but they didn't and another tournament
wasted.

As to weather this is a great WC or not - yes it is.

So few teams play by lamping the ball up by default, all are playing on the
ground, the refs have been mostly outstanding, numerous games decided in the
last 10mins and yes, VAR has been a good addition. The lack of "stars" you
have to put down to the fact that there are so few very bad teams any more and
it's a more equal tournament (compared to others). All the stars before shone
because they were basically playing against traffic cones.

Also, who can remember Euro 92, Euro 96 (the other games), about half of Italia
90, quite a lot of WC2010 (Algeria vs England anyone?) they were
absolutely dire. Best WC in recent times for me was WC2006 when a young Germany
came through under Klinsmann playing amazing football.

Firstly, I hadn't heard about Brian Mac - absolutely the right decision,
despite all that has been achieved. The sheer bloody mindedness he's shown
recently, at least publicly, in refusing to accept there were problems was
ludicrous. The Rhinos need a serious overhaul, so should be very interesting!
Re the WC, yep, some of the European teams have been the worst for negativity.
I'd hoped Senegal might qualify as I liked their gung-ho approach, but look
where that got them? Mind you, the sheer amateurism of teams like Tunisia,
Saudi Arabia when defending has been pitiful. God knows how poor the comp will
be by the American one as they're increasing the number to 48!! They might make
loads of money, but some of the games will be pointless!

Definitely not the best ever in terms of quality of football. But in terms of
entertainment? Sure - it took until yesterday's turgid few hours of dullness to
remind me what the World Cup was usually like, especially in the knock-out
stages.

Thankfully, there's only on more all-European tie left in this round, because
that's where the fun usually drains away.

Hiya,

unquestionably Spain were flippin' dire yesterday. Quite how none of them
caught on themselves that they needed to go long, use the wings or run at them
is beyond us all.

However, a comparison with City though can't be made, nor is it fair to tie
fully Spain's way of playing with Guardiola - in fact, Guardiola has moved on,
but Spain hasn't.

In any case, Spain's style precedes Guardiola somewhat. Spain won Euro 2008
with Luis Aragones (Pep became FCB manager in 2008) so they were already
playing possession football - but they had runners: Torres (yes, he did run),
Villa and Pedro. This Spain put on the runners ONLY at the end to complement
Costa with Aspas & Moreno - but by then it was too late.

The Pep comparison is also irrelevant as Man City do not play against teams who
in a nutshell refuse to play. There's not one EPL team that would dare to play
for a 0-0 draw - their own fans would boo them off the pitch and the coach
would be sacked in a question of weeks.

In the WC it's of paramount importance to NOT lose your 1st game, and given
that there's only 3 x group games, shutting-up-shop and playing for a draw is
commonplace against the top seed. Thus Spain (and most #1 seeds) end up
playing against blanket defences resulting in awful tedious games until they
get more equal opposition in the knockout stage and they can play (see France).

I can't remember the last team to take it to Spain properly - probably Holland
4 years ago - but all my excuses above are just that - they got it badly wrong.

Anyhow, enough of my homily - not hard to see I'm a bit biased!!

Much of what you say I agree with. On Spain however, the sheer lack of
willingness to probe was what lead to their elimination. Teams have always
parked the bus, and whilst it can be as boring as hell, it is not their job to
help Spain beat them. Man City employ a variety of the type of football Spain
could have employed - possesion based but with a cutting edge, and hard
pressing to get back any lost ball. They could have played Costa + 1 up front,
but they didn't. And, when push came to shove, they took some really poor
penalties. That is genuinely surprising given their pass accuracy rate, but of
course most of that is along their back line with no pressure. I would just
have liked them to have really had a go - they could have won the thing!

Great World Cup? Well, clearly a personal view. Refs have been good to very
good, VAR usually a positive, stadia look great, no reports of bad stuff going
on (aside from the ticket touting for England's game tomorrow in particular).
But are there teams you can't wait to watch, who you know will provide real
entertainment as well as having footballing ability? Less sure about that.
Uruguay look the real deal - great defending, but committed attacking too
(Suarez was outstanding v Portugal); England might be right up there, but
there's been plenty of play-safe rubbish.

Hi,

I've been prompted out of lurking

The translation by Salim is excellent. Note that Bielsa not only speaks
Argentinian Spanish, it's usually very technical (from a football point of
view) and then Salim has to get the balance right between the local football
speak and what is actually said - in seconds.

I listened to pieces of what MB said - and there's little or nothing I'd have

As far as I know , Lamrani does no translating during the match and sits
with the injured players (Berardi, Dallas, Brownm, etc)
In fact, there are vides of him celebrating with the non-players during the
match (Alioski vs Forest)

During the match Corbaran appears to do all Bielsa's translating.

Hi all,

He might write very well, he might be a Leeds fan, he might be writing
something nice about LUFC - but Henry Winter's articles are to be avoided. He's
a sanctimonious peddler of i-told-you-so guff and he rarely actually reveals or
investigates anything new.

Regardless of club or player, he's there buttering up someone/something when
they're on the way up - almost as if the respective player/club hired him to do
good PR. Then he's the first to knock them down when things take a downward
turn, listing their faults in the past, the same ones he omitted to mention
when he was buttering them up in the first place. See his pre-tournament
England squad coverage.

When the Bielsa adventure ends, he'll be there wanging on about Bielsagate, his
being set in his ways, uncommunicative etc. Speaking of which, when Bielsagate
broke Twitter he let himself in for well deserved stick with his proclamations
about not-the-done-thing-here there etc and being reminded that he freely spied
upon the England national team and printed what he saw the very next day.

Give me David Conn any day of the week.

Also, I'm with Richard - Becchio was a living miracle of a footballer.

a manager so beloved by Leeds fans that two of them are in a recording studio
working on Bucket Man as a musical tribute to his match-day seat of choice. It
needs Bielsa’s intense, imaginative football. It particularly needs the passion
of the Leeds faithful.

There are some great travelling supports in the Premier League, such as
Manchester United and Newcastle United, among others, and Leeds would be a
welcome addition on the road as well as with the atmosphere that they generate
at Elland Road. After Leeds played away to Preston North End on April 9, the
police officer in charge of the away section at Deepdale praised the 5,516
visiting fans for being “as loud as ever and no issues, no arrests”.

Leeds fans would represent an antidote to some of the ills besetting the
Premier League. They are the opposite of the glory-hunters swooning because of
a club’s prominence. Leeds fans might consider a half-and-half scarf if
stitching together Leeds United and the Kaizer Chiefs, Lucas Radebe’s old team.
They are the antithesis of what Roy Keane famously termed the “prawn-sandwich
brigade”. If somebody mentioned opening a tunnel club at Elland Road, the ready
wits on their terraces would suggest that it was probably an escape route after
15 years’ incarceration in the EFL.

Supporting Leeds is a passion passed on from generation to generation. When
they played Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, there were children too young to
remember the Premiership years leaning excitedly over the yellow and blue
railings almost two hours before kick-off at Elland Road, high-fiving Bielsa
and his players as they marched from the bus.

Three hours later, a fan called Matt Richardson celebrated Jack Harrison’s
winner so enthusiastically that he broke his ankle. A friend of his took a
picture of Richardson in his seat afterwards, smiling, his left foot at a
painful angle, continuing to watching Leeds before the medics arrived. As he
was helped into a wheelchair, Richardson kept an eye on the game while doing a
thumbs up to his mates, who took great delight when he was strapped in by
shouting: “Seatbelt on”.

Richardson later tweeted from hospital that “this is what supporting Leeds
United does to me” . . . “but idc [I don’t care] because Leeds won”. Victory
took Leeds to 82 points, four behind the leaders Norwich City and three ahead
of Sheffield United with four games to play in the compelling race for the two
automatic promotion positions.

Leeds know they still have major work to complete. They also know how much they
want it. If Leeds do go up, the city will acquire even more of a buzz, there
will be more students switching there, and there will be smiles among
broadcasters, knowing that noise is guaranteed at Elland Road.

After Leeds were relegated from the Premiership after a 4-1 thumping by Bolton
Wanderers on May 2, 2004, their then caretaker-manager Eddie Gray remarked
defiantly: “It will not be the end of the club.” No chance. Not with thousands
of Leeds fans singing louder and louder in trying to lift vanquished players,
including one of their own, Alan Smith, who was in tears. And this is why Leeds
United survived. The fans. And that is why 13 days later, as

Hi Sean,

I'm halfway through it and with some exceptions it's largely fluffy PR.

But it's fluffy PR on the club WE follow, therefore it's compulsive viewing.

I'm halfway through and the Daniel James fiasco was a bit of an eye-opener.

So I finally finished the documentary this evening. It's very moving and I
would recommend it. A few observations:
- It's clearly not a completely independent production. While there are
controversial episodes covered (Bamford's feigning getting whacked against
Villa, Spygate, etc. etc.) there's very little new information revealed about
these. (For instance, a more "newsy" documentary might have interviewed the
intern/employee who actually did the spying against Derby.) Some important
episodes are completely omitted. (For example, there is absolutely no mention
of Jack Clarke's bizarre collapse on the bench at 'Boro, let alone an
explanation of what caused it, beyond the vague "virus" that the club belatedly
told us about.)
- The series does not go into great detail about most of the squad or the
backroom team. There's no mention of the under-23s winning the national
championship, no real discussion of Carlos Corberan, Jack Clarke, Jamie
Shackleton, etc.
- It's a brilliant portrayal of the human side of the club: players, management
and supporters. You'd need the proverbial heart of stone not to be affected by
the scenes of the players and backroom staff in tears after the last Derby
game. In particular, I came away with new respect for Kalvin Phillips, Liam
Cooper, Marcelo Bielsa, Victor Orta, Angus Kinnear and Andrea Radrizzani. One
can criticize various personnel decisions that Orta made, particularly in his
first season, but watching him crying after the Derby game, one can't question
his commitment. That guy cares.
Also, the scenes with Bob Tappin made it worth the price (okay, it was free
with Amazon Prime) on their own.
Anyway, I came away feeling even more proud to be a Leeds United supporter,
which I didn't think was possible after all these years.
Cheers!
Sean

Hi all,

Had a peruse of Soccerstats this morning - and unless I was looking at it wrong
- comparing this point of the season vs last year we've played a game less (16
vs 17) and have a point more.

W9 D4 L3 so far vs W8 D6 L3 as at Nov 10th.

1pt more and a game less - not bad, not bad at all.

It's all about getting to 89 of course.

What's more, just go back to Bielsa's first match against Stoke. Look who
started and those on the bench, twelve are still there, thirteen if Douglas had
stayed.

I think I might have been that "someone."

I am more than happy.I am ecstatic..to admit that I
underestimated the lad.

To think that we blew away the form team of the division with a makeshift
team, well it is literally incredible!

My only mild regret is that Jackie H made his ONLY misjudgement of the
entire match with the last kick of the game. If he had played that ball
inside to any of the about 99 Leeds players who were forming a socially
distanced queue along the line of the penalty spot whilst the red-faced
Grealish & Barkley & chums were panting their way back towards the box we
would have had another glorious goal to celebrate.

A joy to read Richard, and I was so pleased for Alioski and Bamford. We all
doubted them, but last night they were outstanding.

Costa was very average in the 1st half and although he improved in the 2nd,
it's a question of time before Raphinha starts there.

Will have another Ribera del Duero tonight!
