Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do List Error?

2020-04-23 Thread Brian Kelly
The person it is showing is the one to which your selected ToDo applies
when you switch to showing Individual ToDo's

Select a different ToDo from the All Todos list and it will show the
ToDo's for the person to whom that Todo applies.

I do not think there is any way to show, on screen, all the ToDo's which
are Individual.

If you click the Print button you can choose to print ToDo's for all
Individuals, this may be the only way to see all Individual ToDo's.

No, I'm not talking about selecting To-Do from an Individual's screen.
I'm talking about selecting To-Do List from the main menu, and then
selecting to view Individual To-Do's.  It always shows the same one
person if I select Individual To-Do's, regardless of who I have selected
at the time.

When I view my To-Do List with All To-Do's selected, it shows that there
are 122 items in the list. If I select to view General To-Do's it show
that there are 33 items. If I select Individual To-Do's it shows ONE!

I haven't checked, but 33 General is probably about right as I nearly
always attach To-Dos to Individuals. It should, then, be showing 84
Individual ones.

Does anyone know if this is
a known bug in Legacy 9?

ALT+ESC will also toggle through open windows. ALT+TAB cycles through
"primary" windows, ALT+ESC cycles through ALL windows - including child
windows (pop-up type windows).

On a side note - if a PRIMARY window is off the screen, you can
SHIFT+RIGHT CLICK on the item in the task bar. If RESTORE is available,
click that ( you want it in a window. You do not want it full-screen
nor do you want it minimized to the task bar). Once you've picked
RESTORE, SHIFT+Right click on it in the task bar item again and select
MOVE. Then use your arrow keys to move it from off-screen back to your
screen. If you are not sure which arrow key to use (if you are not sure
if it is off screen to the left or right or up or down), try
SHIFT+MAXIMIZE and SHIFT+MINIMIZE repeatedly - you can usually see a
quick graphic of it expanding/shrinking to figure out where it is. Once
you know where it is, then do the SHIFT+RIGHT CLICK to restore and
SHIFT+RIGHT CLICK and move. Unfortunately I don't think this works for a
"child-window".

Thank you very much for your help and ideas. I really do appreciate it.
Unfortunately that didn't work.
Cathy Pinner (on Facebook Legacy Group) suggested that I could "try
deleting theToDo.usr and ToDoRpt.usr files from Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\usr\ when Legacy is closed and see if that helps. These are
recreated with defaults when you re-start Legacy" and this worked
perfectly. When I re-opened Legacy on my Surface the To-Do List opened
just fine.

Thanks again everyone,

No! I meant exactly what I said. Hitting Alt by itself will sometimes
pop the currently active window to the front.

Since Legacy's internal screens are not separate programs only the Main
Legacy screen will appear in the Alt+Tab display of active programs.

This, too, has been my hard-learned experience when it seems
that Legacy is locked up.
Brian is correct that an open Legacy screen is buried
somewhere. You just have to find a way to expose it, to bring it to
the surface. He spent some time figuring out how to do it. Thank you.

At 05:15 AM 2/29/2016, you wrote:

Here are two tricks to make the window visible. It requires a
keyboard and I do not have a Surface Pro3 so I cannot test this with
any onscreen keyboard or add-on keyboard.

If you tap the Alt key that will frequently bring the current active
window to the foreground and make it visible.

Another trick, in case the hidden window is not in the visible area
of your display, is to use hold down Alt and tap the spacebar. That
key combination brings up a windows menu for the active window. If
the window is not visible the menu will appear off to the edge of
the display closest to the window.
Choose move from the menu then you can use the cursor keys to move
the menu location towards the centre of the display (if the menu
was on the top edge use the down arrow for example). When you have
the window positioned on screen hit enter to exit the move option.

Re: [LegacyUG] To Do List Images

2014-02-05 Thread Rick Bowden
All the media/picture galleries work in the same way , there is no specific
Repository media.
That applies to galleries for Individuals , Events , Sources , Repositories
or Locations. When you attach media you can chose to have Legacy handle the
file by adding it as a Picture. But there are restrictions , a 'Picture'
can only be a graphic image file and even then , not a .gif and I think
there restrictions on some forms of .tif images , and always a
reccomendation that the file is not very large. The size matters because
Legacy opens the file and reads it into temporary storage in order to
create a thumbnail for the icon which it puts in the media frame. It does
this dynamically each time you enter the media gallery and many large
images create an enormous processing overhead.
For other files , .txt , .doc , .pdf , .url , .mpg , .wav , .mp3 and any
others you can think of, Legacy will not handle , but you can attach them
as Sound , Video or Document files as Legacy simply passes the control to
Windows and , in turn , Windows passes control to the default application
which you have set for the particular file extension. The only real
difference among Sound , Video and Document is that a different static icon
is assigned to the media gallery frame , symbolising a microphone , film
reel or document page but essentially Legacy doesn't care. Before , I think
it was version 6 , there was no Document category and I used to attach PDF
files as Sounds files, it still invoke Adobe Acrobat reader to display the
file.
You can also attach those large .bmp , .jpg , .tif , .gif files as a
Document and have your default image display application display them
rather than Legacy.
With version 8 of Legacy there is now an option to add a website address
which means I no longer have to create .url files in order to have web
addresses in my media galleries.
I make extensive use of the ToDo list system and the associated
repositories to organise my research files as it allows me to keep all the
files in a single folder but have them accessible from the individuals in
my Legacy database in just a couple of clicks. It also works for general
information files , like keeping a reference table of the dates on which a
census was taken in different decades. Making use of ToDo list categories ,
such as Information , or creating your own such as Research notes allows
you to Apply the Filter option and get appropriate lists of the items.
I think it would be worth your while persevering with the ToDo list and
repository use because it is very flexible giving you a lot of options for
organising your external files while keeping track of them using Legacy.

The To Do itself does not have a place to link Media.

The only two options would be to use the Source Icon to add the image as
a source and link the image to that source or to link the image to the
repository (after you have selected a repository for that image).

Personally I think I would use the source option. The image linked to
the repository would show up when you are viewing all the sources from
that repository. The source for the To Do will be unique to that To Do.

Ultimately it would be nice to plan a trip to include all the cemeteries

Re: [LegacyUG] To Do list for a certain cemetery

2013-07-19 Thread Jay 1FamilyTree
Gary,

I would just add an event called tombstone to each person
Put the cemetery name in the location field
Put Missing in the description field

Then just do a search for that event name and location and create a printed
report.
(Remember to add the spouses name as one of the items in your report so
that you can see that when you print your list because cemetery stones
rarely have maiden names. )

After you have taken the photos, you can attach the pic to that event and
remove the Missing text from the description field and
you have saved keystrokes for both adding the photo and removing the 'to-do

But I am sure you will get several suggestions, one hopefully will work
best for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] to-do list question

2013-02-07 Thread Cathy-0
Michele,

When you open the To Do List window for a person, look over to the right and
under the “Help” button where you should see three icons. Roll your mouse over
each to see what each icon does. You can copy a complete To Do item to the
Clipboard and then merely paste it onto the To Do Lists for your remaining two
people.

If you had more than 2 people, you could instead add just one General To Do
item.

It’s your choice.

Re: [LegacyUG] To-do list - when searching for a surname

2013-01-14 Thread Brian/Support
Legacy has General To Do items that do not have to be linked to any
particular person. This would probably be the best type for a To Do that
is for a surname.

The easiest way to add a General To Do is to View To Do List, the Add
button there will ask if you want a General To Do or one linked to the
current person. Clicking Add when viewing a person's To Do list
automatically adds a To Do linked to that person. You can change the
display on the individual's To Do list to General (the box in the upper
right) and then the Add will ask which you want.

Re: [LegacyUG] To Do List - How do I sort by category?

2012-10-17 Thread unique64 Riley
You can reach the To Do List window 3 different ways.

1. Click on the word View at the top of the screen and choose, View To Do
List. This will give you all the To Do's.

2. Click on the To Do picture icon in the Toolbar at the top of the screen.
This will also give you all the To Do's.

3. Click on the To Do icon under either the husband or wife in the center of
the screen. This will show you that person's To-Do items, if any. But you can
also use the drop down arrow at the top right to re-categorize the list to All
To Do's.

Sorting by category is achieved by using the different options at the bottom of
the screen. After you have selected which filters you want, be sure to click
the button, Apply Filter on the bottom right.

Hope this helps.

[LegacyUG] To-Do List, research logs, and research questions

2011-08-17 Thread Jean Suplick
For To-Do List users...

All the recent discussion about To-Do Lists spurred me into looking more
seriously into this feature. Although I had dabbled with it previously, I
hadn't thought deeply about how to organize myself around exploiting it.

I see two ways to use To-Do lists: for managing a classic style research log
(source based) and for managing research questions. For me, there is a
distinction between the two.

Research logs are source-based. There is one entry per source consulted, and
you note when and where you consulted it, what you searched for (e.g.
surname), what the results were, and enough details about the source to
create a citation. So for John Doe, I might have a list of associated To-Do
items each related to searching a different source. In this model, I could
create a report out of Legacy that would be my research log. Using Legacy to
do this seems cumbersome to me. And going through an intermediate step of
generating printing a report to take on a research trip seems like too
many steps to me.

I find myself using To-Do's differently, though. When working in the Family
view and editing details or notes about an Individual, I add a To-Do item
based on a research task (Locate death record) or question (Where is he in
the 1880 census?) rather than source. Then in the Description field I note
all the likely sources to check and any thoughts I have that might aid in
the search. Then on a research trip, I can use the Results field to note
which sources I consulted and the results of searching those sources. But
it's all lumped together with a single To-Do item. I know I can create
sources and link them to the item, although I'm not sure I want to use that
feature for To-Do's.

In this style of working, I prefer to take my laptop on the research trip,
and work interactively in Legacy to type in my results and sources. (There
are a handful of features that would make this usage model easier, and I've
submitted a handful of enhancement requests on the Legacy website!) My
concern is that if I ever need to create research log for some reason in the
future, I'm not sure I could construct one easily if I use To-Do Lists this
way. Could I?

How do you organize yourself around using To-Do lists?

Jean

Re: [LegacyUG] To-Do List, research logs, and research questions

2011-08-17 Thread Connie Sheets
Jean,

I think the To Do feature can serve both purposes you outline.  The To Do
reporting capabilities are incredibly flexible if you make use of features like
adding categories, filtering, etc. I have categories for things like Court,
Probate, Manuscripts, etc., but I don't necessarily limit a To Do item to one
specific source. You could have a category called Research Questions if you
wanted to set it up that way. It took a lot of practice and playing around with
the features to figure it out, but once I did, I don't find printing out a
Research Plan to take with me on a trip or printing a Research Log afterward
cumbersome at all.  Your research log won't look like a traditional research
log, but it can easily contain all the necessary elements.

I do create sources, but I cut and paste them into the Description field of the
To Do item.  I got in the habit of doing that when there was a bug that didn't
print the sources with a To Do report.  I like being able to see the source
right there, before the results, and not attached as endnotes.  If I'm able to
create source citations from a card catalog before the trip, so much the
better:  then all I have to do is type in the Results when I'm at the
repository (or make handwritten notes on a printout if for some reason I
want/need to).

This is difficult to explain in writing, so I'll take the liberty of sending
you some sample reports offline so you can get an idea of how I use the
feature.  I've written about it before on this list at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/msg10091.html

Hope this helps a bit!

Connie

Re: [LegacyUG] TO DO List

2011-05-23 Thread Robert E. Carneal
I do that, but I used eight colors.  What I do is save the list in
text, and import it to Excel, and color the cells to indicate which
one is related to which of my great-grandparents. I can't supply a
graphic example here, but I will try a text example. My list might
look like this:
RED ORANGE 1995-07-20 Photo James's headstone
BLUE BLUE 1994-09-20 Kathy's War presentation, Nashville, TN
GREEN BLACK 2009-07-22 Search for cemetery of the sister of
Joshua. Wear snake protection!!

And so on. The first box tells me which great-grandparent the person
is related to, and the second box is my code of how 'urgent' this
is. Takes some getting used to, but works well for me. During a family
reunion, the color will tell me right away the questions I want to
explore.

Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] to-do list

2010-03-18 Thread Connie Sheets
To print a To-Do list of General To-Do items (these instructions assume you did
not assign a category or locality when you created the item):

From the Reports Menu:

All ReportsTo Do Items

On the Record Selection Tab: General Tasks Not Tied to An Individual

What To Include Tab: Ensure at least some items under Report Body are checked
(for test purposes, I would check them all).

Filter Option Tab: This Category (make sure it is blank)

Filter Option Tab: This Locality (make sure it is blank)

Status: Leave all checked except Has a Reminder Date

Click Preview.

If you get a blank page, back out of the report completely, then try again. If
for some reason, it still doesn't work, then you may have assigned a category
or locality when you created the to-do item. In that case:

From the Reports Menu:

All ReportsTo Do Items

On the Record Selection Tab: General Tasks Not Tied to An Individual

What To Include Tab: Ensure at least some items under Report Body are checked
(for test purposes, I would check them all).

Filter Option Tab: All Categories

Filter Option Tab: All Localities

Status: Leave all checked except Has a Reminder Date

Click Preview.

If that doesn't work, then I cannot replicate the problem. [I can replicate it
only if I ask for Open items when all have been Closed (or vice versa), or a
specific locality when the items are tied to no locality or a different
locality, etc.].

The To-Dos are one of the best features of Legacy, IMO, so I hope those who are
having difficulty will figure it out. As I mentioned before, I do have a
frequent problem with blank pages, but it is because I forget to change the
Record Selection, What to Include, and/or Filter Options tabs appropriate to
the type of report I want, not because of a problem with Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] to-do list

2010-03-17 Thread James Cook
Sounds to me there are two different things being talked about here.
1) A custom General ToDo category. This could be attached to an
individual however. Then there are the todo's that have been added
via the Tools menu (I think) that are not attached to any individual.

Given that, if one were to attach a General todo to an individual,
then tell the report options to only show todo's that are
unaffiliated, you would get an empty list.

I don't ordinarily use General To-Dos, but in light of this thread, I gave it a
try. For some reason, when I first tried to print a report, I got a blank
(even though I had the correct filters set). When I tried it a 2nd, 3rd, etc.
time it worked fine and I have been unable to duplicate the problem. (I am
using the most recent Legacy build: 7.4.0.21).

Try backing out of reports or print, then setting your filters again and
re-preview.

BTW, in all modes (whether Individual or General), the print feature for To Do
has a bad habit of counter-intuitively resetting itself to default localities
and categories that will often yield blank pages. You have to check the filter
options each and every time you want to print.
