LyX 2: So far so good, except outlines
Hi all, So I svn'ed LyX 2, built it, and ran it. So far so good except outlines. I ran it against one of my existing books and its associated layout file and seealso.inc, and it worked. One fascinating thing is for the first time in my history with LyX, I got it to recognize a layout file first crack out of the box. All I had to do was put the correctly named .layout in the same directory as the document, and bang, it worked. I know 1.6.x was *advertised* to work that way, but it didn't. Later I'll do some experiments to see if 2.0.x really works that way every time, or whether I just got lucky the first time with 2.0.x. In the past I've found layout recognition to be a hit or miss intermittent. In August I put in a request for a couple improvements to LyX outline mode that would stratospherically launch productivity. See it here: http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-de...@lists.lyx.org/msg154181.html http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/6174 The enhancement described, or even something close, would enable authors to construct from scratch outlines within LyX, enhancing the organization and value of their documents. It would also limit mistakes as the author flips between outline view and document view. I see right now it's owned by "nobody", and it would be wonderful if it could be addressed. If the enhancement as I described it is too difficult to code in time for release, I can work with the developer to simplify the enhancement while still retaining its value. Anyway, my next step will be to observe and document how all the features added since 1.5.x work. 1.6.x had a lot of different inserts. 1.6 has layout modules, which I haven't explored yet. I hear 2.0 allows you to shut off spellcheck in certain styles, which probably means there's LOTS of customization that can be done at the style level. Anyway, thanks for the great software. Re: LyX can't find CLS it has already found.
Thanks Vincent, I'm use Luke Simon's layout as posted on this list: http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-de...@lists.lyx.org/msg75472.html Is it no longer compatible with LyX? After another look at -dbg debug I see: LyX: Could not find input file: obsolete.inc [around line 515 of file /tmp/lyx_tmpdir.TJ5049/convert_layout.XM5049 current token: 'obsolete.inc' context: ''] ../../src/TextClass.cpp(269): Unable to convert /home/bbogart/.lyx/layouts/acm_proc_article-sp.layout to format 11 Error reading `~/.lyx/layouts/acm_proc_article-sp.layout' (Check `acm_proc_article-sp') Check your installation and try Options/Reconfigure... Error: Could not load class The document class acm_proc_article-sp could not be loaded. Error: Error Unable to set document class. On closer inspection its clear the layout expects something called "obsolete.inc" which no longer exists. Everything seems to work fine after removing the offending line from the layout. So the bug is invalid, it was a problem with the layout. Thanks for your time, B. Bogart Vincent van Ravesteijn wrote: B. You could help using fixing this by creating a bug report at http://www.lyx.org/trac/wiki/BugTrackerHome Please attach there an old LyX example file. It would also be very helpful when you can attach the original PDF (created with LyX 1.1) and the current PDF output. If your file contains confidential files, you can alternatively send me the 3 files in a private mail. The "latex protocol" menu entry of LyX just shows two label warnings. How can I find out if something (and what) is missing? Hard to say without a LyX file. The label warnings can be ignored, so the LaTeX-code seems to be OK. When there would be missing LaTeX-packages you would not have been able to compile the file. regards Uwe

raw latex commands on a lyx doc?
Hi list, I'm new to LyX. I need to use a .cls file (larkc.cls attached), and have done all the steps described in the documentation and this wiki post: http://wiki.lyx.org/Layouts/CreatingLayouts I have put the cls file on the standard place on ubuntu and ran texhash. That seems to have worked because I can latex the attached .tex example (D.x.x.tex) and the output is correct. The layout shows up in the layout list. Since larkc.cls is a variation of book, I just input the book layout and changed the name of it to larkc as follows (.lyx/layouts/larkc.layout) #% Do not delete the line below; configure depends on this # \DeclareLaTeXClass[larkc, book]{larkc} Format 11 Input book.layout This seems to work. Now I need to be able to set values for \dueContractual, \status etc (see d.x.x.tex, this is the example that came with the larkc.cls file). Since these are raw tex commands, how do I assign values to them in Lyx? Thanks, Jose PS: I've tried on windows too. -- Best, -Jose Jose Quesada, PhD. I'm not sure whether you need qt4-mac or qt4-mac-devel. I'd guess that only qt4-mac is needed, so install that one first and see if it works. In either case, the correct path to qt4 will be something like /opt/local/. (Inside that directory you should find a "bin" directory that has a program "moc" in it (possibly linked to another directory).) Also note that you'll probably want to use --with-version-suffix=-2.0. (The "1.6" should be changed in the INSTALL.MacOSX file.) > And is »--with-included-gettext « really part of the command string or an > alias where to put some other path or other information? The "--with-included-gettext" should be a part of the configure line. (That tells LyX not to use the gettext version you have installed elsewhere on your Mac, but to use the one that's included with the LyX source.) Try it, and if you have troubles, go ahead and ask on this list. BH

Don't know which of them are LyX's bugs and which are features, so I'll just fire away: 1) I couldn't paste any text in LyX - neither from OpenOffice or from Character map (all this was possible in version 1.6), so the only way to input a sample text in LyX was to import a text file. 2) When I tried to make a pdf out of a Russian text containing obsolete characters, LyX returned the same error that version 2.0 did. 3) However (!), when I ticked the option "use XeTeX", all the Russian text, including obsolete characters, was successfully exported to... 3a) ... to an xhtml file. Dear Guenter, Thank you very much for your suggestions! It seems that XeTeX is indeed a feasible way to print some old-orthography Russian letters. And this is great! However, a more ambitious task, which is similar to enabling Greek polytonic, would be to enable the true Church Slavonic in LyX, which would be amazingly useful. Church Slavonic looks quite different to ordinary Russian (a sample of Church Slavonic can bee seen on Wikipedia, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Csl-luke20.png), and is rich in diacritics, so it requires its own fonts, such as Irmologion or Triodion (can be seen here - http://www.irmologion.ru/fonts.html). I am not sure Church Slavonic characters are included in Unicode. What I know, however, is that attempts have been made to create TeX packages that make it possible to typeset in Church Slavonic - one such package is HipTeX (http://www.sobor.org/hip/); another (and supposedly better one, since it is more recent and avoids certain drawbacks of HipTeX) is CSLTeX (http://sites.google.com/site/csltex/). They can be downloaded by clicking the zip files, but, unfortunately, documentation to both of them is in Russian. Can these developments be somehow incorporated in LyX? Andrey

Re: Mystified by \selectlanguage [modified]
Hi users, I've traced this to the use of the babel package - it seems to be automatically set for use in Tools->Preferences...->Language settings->Language dialog. What I find strange is that LyX seems to be introducing the \selectlanguage and \foreignlanguage commands in what appears to be a random fashion. When I create a new equation-reference, I get something like: \eqref{\selectlanguage{british}eq:myequation\selectlanguage{english}} Does anyone know why these show up? In the language settings dialog I see options for Auto begin and Auto end which are checked in my case. Also, in the "Command start:" line-edit, I see "\selectlanguage{$$language}". I am guessing it it these settings that are responsible for the spurious language switchings inside my \eqref. But if these are defaults for new documents, is there a reason why I may not have seen this before? How does the "british" language enter my document - the default is probably just "English" on my system. Even my \documentclass command (on latex export) shows the british option! Well, yea. So what? It doesn't need to work all the time. If the Lyx compile button doesn't work anymore, but the make script still runs, that's good enough for me. By the way, the lyx importer is great. I imported several docuents which I consider quite complex, and sometimes after a few adaptations, often right away, they compile in lyx. Export is great, too. So what's the problem? :) Niko On Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 1:16 PM, Manveru wrote: > > > 2010/2/22 Jose Quesada >> >> +1, definitely the most important thing for me is good latex integration. >> That use case (cols use plain latex, you use lyx) is very common >> > But LyX was not designed to "reverse engineer" LaTeX documents, so lot of > sophisticated solutions are problematic for LyX import. > > -- > Manveru > jabber: manv...@manveru.pl > gg: 1624001 > http://www.manveru.pl > -- http://scg.unibe.ch/staff/Schwarz twitter.com/nes1983 Tel: +41 076 235 8683

Thanks, Vincent. I understand better now. I was trying to use the Todo-notes module but no custom TODO inset was showing up in the menu. Hence the (more general) question. It turned out that the todonotes.module file was not available in my distribution (2.0.0svn) though it was a listed module so I had to download this file from the LyX wiki. -- Manoj On Thursday 25 February 2010 10:25:33 am Vincent van Ravesteijn - TNW wrote: > > I see the Insert->Custom insets> in LyX but the submenu is always > > empty? > > > Why is this so? On Linux, you're installing into system directories, not user directories, and so you need to install as root; that's not true on Mac, so you don't need the "sudo" part. If you're installing a pre-release version of LyX (as you would be with the devel tree) and are able to send in backtraces with bug reports, then use "make install" instead of "make install-strip". You should also be aware that the devel tree doesn't work as well on Mac as on other platforms. I have not yet used it for production work and wouldn't recommend doing so right now. Mystified by \selectlanguage
Hi users, I find \selectlanguage{british} and \selectlanguage{english} automatically springing up in my exported latex code (I am not able to generate DVI from within lyx for this reason). My document is a simple one with "article" document class. The only module I am using is TODO notes (and that is where the \selectlanguage causes problems - it begins to show up within the text for the todo-note). I haven't messed with any other document setting. Does anyone know how and why this command shows up at all? thanks, Manoj

RE: What are custom insets?
Hi Manoj, In LyX, most of the specialized commands are housed inside of "insets". All of the floats and many of the commands in LyX make use of them. The provide, in essence, a convenient container for LaTeX commands. A custom inset is just an inset that you have defined yourself. As an example, about a month ago this list was talking about ways to create a float environment for longtables. Someone suggested that using the following command might work: \afterpage{\clearpage tablecontent} So, I spent a while testing this out, and it works great. However, I greatly dislike the use of evil red text (ERT) in LyX. The entire reason that I use LaTeX (and by extension LyX) is to get away from "finger painting my documents", and providing pages and pages of personal macro definitions I the *epitome* of finger painting. Thus, I greatly prefer to define personal macros (either in module files or in layouts) and make use of those, instead. For this reason, I transformed \afterpage{clearpage tablecontent} into a new macro: \usepackage{afterpage} \newcommand{\longtablepage}[1]{% \afterpage{\clearpage #1}} And then I placed that macro in its own module. Finally, I created a custom inset that would act as a float for longtables. Here is the float definition: InsetLayout Custom:Longtable LyXType custom Labelstring longtable Decoration classic LabelFont Color collapsable SizeSmall EndFont MultiPartrue LatexName longtablepage LatexType command Requiresafterpage Preamble \usepackage{afterpage} \newcommand{\longtablepage}[1]{% \afterpage{\clearpage #1}} EndPreamble End Here is a brief description of the parameters. The LyXType defines it as a custom float with a lable of "longtable". It uses the "classic" decoration (which happens to be a little red box, similar to the label for "figure" or table"). The float is collapsible and the font-size is small. MultiPar = true allows me to enter multiple paragraphs into the environment. The next few commands define the LaTeX options. LatexName is the name of the command, "longtable" (see the definition above). LatexType tells LyX that this inset is a command (for other types, see the Advanced User Manual). It requires the "afterpage" package. Finally, the preamble command defines what should be placed in the document's preamble for the command to work. Like I said above, this information can be placed in a module, which makes it conveniently available in any document. It also returns LyX to a "What You See is What You Mean" writing environment. Hope that helps. Cheers, Rob Oakes PS, the module for this particular command is attached in case it is of interest to anyone. To use it, just place it in the "layouts" folder of your user directory. longtablepage.module Description: Binary data

text-mode macros?
Hi users, I use math-macros in lyx but I was wondering if there is any way to achieve macros in text-mode. A use-case that I frequently encounter is to use either "Eqn." or "equation" in front of equation-reference numbers when cross-referencing depending on which journal I am submitting my paper to. Right now, I am achieving this with branches for each journal that modify ERT definitions of a new latex command (eg. \newcommand{\eq}{Eqn.}) Is there a text-mode macro feature in LyX, or is there a hack to achieve the same effect? The above use-case can be achieved through the hyperref package but that, at many times, opens another can of worms (spurious errors about extra '}', improper DVI generation etc.) thanks, Manoj

I would like to mention that the server which hosts the LyX svn development trunk is configured in such a way that some places may have problems pulling in the code. For example, from home, I have no problems downloading LyX using svn. From work (a very security-conscious place), the same commands will fail, giving virtually no clues as to why, and yet svn checkouts and updates work from *other servers* when used from my workplace. What I have to do there is ssh into yet another computer on the "outside", svn update from there, and then snag the results to my work computer. Despite the hassle, 2.0 has been worth it. I have no idea why this happens, despite several concerted days of trying different things, emailing both the LyX server maintainer and our security people, etc., who all had good suggestions but no definitive answers. My best guess at this point is that our work firewall/proxy system was somehow hung up on particular configuration flags from the svn server. Remove you personalized lyx directory from your users profile directory -- Manveru jabber: manv...@manveru.pl gg: 1624001 http://www.manveru.pl

Some month ago I already tried to compile the lyx-devel version without success, probably because I made mistakes. So I ask, especially those who have compiled the lyx-devel on MacOSX, will it go with the above commands or not? Which is the right way to get it compiled on MacOSX? hoping, joachim -- MacBook Pro intel OSX 10.4.11 Tiger - Aquamacs Distribution 1.9 GNU Emacs 22.3.1 (i386-apple-darwin9.8.0, Carbon Version 1.6.0) Mac BacicTeX 2009 - LyX 1.6.5
[help] impossible to use Lyx with miktex 2.8?
Hi, It seems impossible to use Lyx 1.6 with miktex 2.8 on my laptop on windows XP. Each time lyx doesn't recognize the document classes, saying that the layout are not available (article, scrbook,...) I 've tried 5 installations / desintallations of all miktex and Lyx. I'am administrator on my laptop I've downloaded all the available latex packages I' ve tried to use the standard lyx installer and the alt one. I've used each time the reconfigure options of lyx.. Some people said it is a known issue in the mailing list archive, OK but what is the solution?, I can't find it. I 'am on this issue for one week, I am becoming a little bit desperate... More than that I have on another windows XP PC (desktop) an old mikex 2.7 with Lyx 1.6 working perfectly well... But miktex 2.7 is now not available. I'am going to test Texlive if it is possible. Hence, you can try: 0x0462 "\\fontencoding{X2}\\selectfont\\char88" "\\DeclareFontEncoding{X2}{}{}" "" # CYRILLIC CAPITAL LETTER YAT 0x0463 "\\fontencoding{X2}\\selectfont\\char120" "\\DeclareFontEncoding{X2}{}{}" "" # CYRILLIC SMALL LETTER YAT > 3.
