Re: Strange Pacer Question

2023-12-29 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
John,

Have a look at https://writer2latex.sourceforge.net/index.html

I have used Writer2LaTeX a few years ago and found it very
helpful when using what was then called the "Ultraclean"
Option, which I don't see on this much more current version
on cursory look.

Install both writer2latex.oxt and writer2latex-config.oxt.
Then play with the Configuration in Tools -> Options (which
on my Mac only appear of an ODT is open).

You would need to save as ODT first, then export to LaTeX,
from which you would be able to use tex2lyx (the -m option
canbehelpful), and then you could pull into LyX.

If the Word format you are getting is always the same (per
lawyer) which is likely, because they would use some sort of
"template" much of this could be automated :-)-O

The PDF5 might look like

File -> Export -> Export [PDF (LuaTeX)]

which I have tied to Command-R on my Mac(s).

Re: Strange Pacer Question

2023-12-28 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
John,

did you ever try to export using PDF5 (LuaLaTeX)?

Recent PSTricks should load
https://github.com/zauguin/luapstricks when using LuaLaTeX. If
that works for the "normal" way try and upload into Pacer and
see what happens. If Pacer accepts that see what happens when
you import a Word document and generate the PDF with LuaLaTeX.

How do you "import" Word documents?

And, LyX (or rather LateX) doesn't use (multiple) blank lines.

Re: SOLVED > Re: how to tell LyX that there is a 2023 texlive

2023-05-05 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
On the Mac I use Homebrew's basictex with a small script to save the
installed packages so it can pull the additional ones after the upgrade
via tlmgr. LyX works out of the box because Homebrew and tlmgr run
texhash and the binary directories are symlinked by Homebrew.

I can then usually just remove the older version.

Re: My book isn't compiling, having something to do with refstyle

2023-05-05 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
Sounds like you updated your TeX installation, so it is not a LyX issue
and more help can be obtained on TeX related lists. But it's about to
be fixed anyway.

I use MacTeX (TeXLive) (2023) and update almost daily with tlmgr. When
regressions are introduced I usually try to downgrade the corresponding
package with tlmgr which I have configured to keep at least two previous
versions of packages when updating.

ok, than we'll move to the deep stuff :-)-O

I don't have Debian, but on my Mac there is a ~/.lyx directory where
there is a file called lyxrc which has, in my case,

\screen_font_roman "Noto Serif"
\screen_font_sans "Noto Sans"
\screen_font_typewriter "Noto Sans Mono"

so you want end LyX, then locate the file and change that to read
something like

\screen_font_roman "DejaVu Serif"
\screen_font_sans "DejaVu Sans"
\screen_font_typewriter "Hack"

and then start LyX again and see what that does.

csv2lyx.py throwing an error

2023-03-23 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
Hi,

I have tried to File -> Import -> Table (CSV) a small CSV file
into a LyX document and receive an error, which I can reproduce
from the command line for Python 3.9 3.10 and 3.11.2 (my default)
like so:

python -tt /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/scripts/csv2lyx.py
i.csv i.lyx

always yielding this error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/scripts/csv2lyx.py",
line 171, in
input_file = "".join(open(infile,'rU').readlines())
 ^
ValueError: invalid mode: 'rU'

This is on my spanking new M2 Airbook MacOs 13.2.1 and the MacTeX
2023 as well as on my Intel iMac.

Does anyone have an idea what to do about this?

greetings, el

if LyX is running you can save all open buffers to disk and then quit by
way of something like (multiple levels of double quotes are required
(on the Mac due to the space in ~/Library/Application Support/Lyx-2.3))

pushd "$(dirname "$(find ~/Library -name .lyxpipe.in -type p)")"
echo "LYXCMD:test:buffer-write-all" > .lyxpipe.in
echo "LYXCMD:test:lyx-quit" > .lyxpipe.in

and then (on the Mac)

/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/Resources/configure.py
osascript -e 'tell application id "org.lyx.lyx" to activate'

or (on Linux, but since I use the Mac it's not tested)

configure.py
lyx &

Re: Ventura graphics Mac

2023-01-26 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
Please don't argue unnecessary points, on the ARM Intel can not be
virtualized only emulated as you rightly say.

Finding an ARM Linux is an issue for itself, as is installing it,
finding a recent version of LaTeX for it and keep this all current.

Makes even less sense for this small issue, for which there is s simple
workaround and which I am confident will be fixed soon.

I have been using Virtual Box on an Intel iMac (for many years) as my
practice software runs on (Intel) Windows only. They have an early beta
for ARM, but for if and when I have to replace the iMac (with an ARM
iMini or Studio) I rather have gotten me a small form factor Intel box,
which I will install RSN and then run headless with RustDesk or VNC even
while I still have the Intel box so I get experience.

But, make no mistake, nothing else will be installed on that thingy, I
will not use Microsoft products if there is any way around it and would
not dream of even trying LyX on Windows.

Re: Lyx & Tectonic

2023-01-21 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
I think the point was that tectonic can be embedded. Which would be
really cool for LyX.

I kind of like if it could pull all packages required (only) if and when
needed, but that means you could only use it with an Internet
connection running. That's not always guaranteed.

But I have of course no clue how that would work with existing
Lua(La)TeX documents using LUA, and how this would keep the packages
from TexLive updated.

Re: Ventura graphics Mac

2023-01-21 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
On 2.3.7 and Intel 13.1, I can also not use the File Browser to insert
graphics. But then I haven't inserted graphics for a while. On the
2.3.7 on an intel 12.6.2 I don't see that behavior.

The alternative proposed here makes not sense whatsoever to me,
especially on an M1. The (speed) limiting factor is LaTeX (in
particular LuLaTeX).

Universal binary in any case means that on the M1 the M1 binary runs and
on the Intel the Intel binary. However, even running the Intel binary
on the M1 under Rosetta makes no real difference, other than that it
loads slower. But since LyX is set up to open at login I would not even
care.

remind me during my (almost) daily upgrade if the XCode Command Line

After an unsuccessful launch open Systems Preferences -> Privacy &

You can also issue

sudo spctl --master-disable

it will ask you for your password and you must be an admin for this.

If you try again it should go through.

And try to symlink python3 to a directory in your PATH

ln -s /usr/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python

or if that squeals

sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python3 /usr/local/bin/python

If you run

find /Applications/LyX.app -type f -exec grep python {} ';'

you'll see that a number of files want python (and not python3).

As an aside:

I use homebrew's python3.10.8 which symlinks to
/usr/local/bin/python3 and if I am not mistaken to
/usr/local/bin/python (but I may have done this manually) so
python is always found and always equates to the (latest)
python (3.10.*) installed by homebrew.

Added complication for homebrew is of course that on the
M1 /usr/local is replaced by /opt/homebrew in the above,
but as that's in my PATH it doesn't matter.

As my two Desktop machines do not support Ventura I'll have to
software update them after the (long) weekend (at the coast
:-)-O) to 12.6.2 and see what that does. 12.6.1 has
/usr/bin/pythin3 as well but that's 3.9.6

There is a reason for this (homebrew) madness. Namely I need
to run some Python modules (installed with PIP) and I need the
same version on all of my machines, obviously :-)-O

Re: Syncing skim with LyX

2022-07-19 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse

Ehud,

First of all why compile to tex and then to pdf, instead of doing this
directly?

There are however (at least) two ways of doing this:

First look in the

Document

pulldown for

View [PDF (LuaTeX)]

can be also

[PDF (pdflatex)]

which is tied (in my case) to CMD-R

Then in

Perferences -> File Handling -> File Formats -> Format:

look for

[PDF (LuaTeX)]

and set

Viewer: [Custom] [open -a Skim.app $$i]

click

Apply

and perhaps do same for

[PDF (pdflatex)]

You can also select an PDF in the finder and then enter

CMD-I

which will open a window with lots of information and you usually would
find

Open With: ...

showing

Preview.

You can change that in the Pulldown to Skim for this (single) file or
for all files, so that double clicking on a PDF will open it with skim,
and the default method of opening PDFs in Skim would also change to
skim.

I do the latter, as I use skim for almost every PDF.

greetings, el

Well, I see two things :-)-O

You didn't include it as graphic but as external file, so it does not
preview in the lyX file. Cosmetic, but I wonder why one would do that.

And indeed the stock fig2pdftex.py lacks a shebang on my Mac which I

Re: What Am I Doing Wrong … bibliography entries not being included

2022-04-19 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse

What is also not helpful is to have a hardcoded bibliography in a
directory that does not exist on my computer and starting the name of
the bibliography with a space ' '.

The (Tufte (not LyX)) issue is amenable to Google.

This link

https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/587605/tufte-book-biblatex-error-biblatex-incompatible-with-natbib

basically says that nobib turns off natbib and if you don't have natbib
you need a replacement such as biblatex.

The correct LyX way of doing what you want is described in

https://lyx-users.lyx.narkive.com/V1WM48zp/correct-usage-of-nobibliography-in-lyx

which works in your example (after I loaded the required packages
manually, which I am now tossing again).

Re: Preamble header issues

2021-10-09 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse

Rich,

"Only a year" means a lot in computer terms, and not only coma script
has been updated significantly in the meantime.

Secondly, that was actually not a minimal working example.

An MWE reduces ALL additional choices to the defaults, empties out the
preamble, one line by one and removes all additional commands until the
only remaining text and commands (re)produce the error.

Often that makes one see the problem before even asking for help.

However, it appears that you totally unnecessarily (in my not so humble
view) add several lines to the preamble.

The fonts can be chosen in LyX, as can the Clear Page command (where you
had a typo (\cleardoublepddpage)) and the default page style which when
chosen from the pull down translates, as Herbert pointed out absolutely
correctly, to 'plain'.

I hate ERT but haven't figured out yet how to (re)move the page
numbering changes (into the preamble).

Please find enclosed.

I myself like the NoTo fonts, but if I was using something like
Palatino I would use the (free) TexGyre fonts (I think Pagella is the
one).

you need to figure out a way of updating KOMA Script to the latest
version (the versions coming with the linux distributions are years
behind).

And if that doesn't work you need to post a MWE here, and I mean MINIMAL

Was the LCO in the same directory? And did you install the lipsum package?

Try the following:

1. In the preamble add the following line:
\usepackage{wallpaper}

2. In the document add TeX following code (LyX > Insert > TeX Code):
\thispagestyle{empty}
\ThisCenterWallPaper{1}{path_to_wallpaper}

Chris

Replied thus:

Thanks Chris,

That has done it. Great.

I always use \thispagestyle{empty} in the first page.

I attempted to use \ThisCenterWallPaper{.43}{path_to_wallpaper}

However, I must have done something wrong, because it didn't work. I
tried so many things, in the end. I might have put that in the preamble
instead of ERT. I don't know?

Thank you, it works a treat. You are the man.

That is a not that uncommon LaTeX issue.

Upgrade to the latest LyX and TeX, update the latter to current and run
everything again.

Then I would suggest you make a Minimal Working Example (MWE), ie remove
EVERYTHING which does not produce contribute to the error (including in
the preamble, settings and the like).

That often already allows one to find and correct the issue.

If not export it to TeX and und PDFLaTeX or LUALaTeX on it and see where
in the MWE that error is triggered. Reduce that even further until you
have a bare bones TeX file which reproduces the issue.

Or post the MWE (LyX file) and the image here so one can have a look if
it it sows same behavior on different systems.

Actually, I usually do the same thing (because I forget about the paste
LaTeX option). Sometimes, though, what plops into the ERT box is a mess
of the sort Mario described, and I end up inserting newlines to make it
readable. I'm not sure if the paste special approach avoids that -- I
don't have an example handy at the moment -- but one can hope.

Re: 3D graphics for LYX

There are 375482 tools around to produce professional 3D graphics.

This is the wrong question. The question must be what data you got, and
what you want to show.

R and knitR are very well suited to produce very good graphics from
within LyX.

To whomever this may concern,

I have recently started using LyX to write scientific papers for my

wanting to change the way the figures are labelled. I have managed to
change the figure labelling from “Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3…” to
labelling per section “Figure 1.1, Figure 1.2, Figure 2.1…” However, I
was wondering if there was a way to change it to say “Fig. 1.1”, instead
of “Figure 1.1”

I’ve also changed the size of the font inside the caption to be
smallest. This works great, no issues. However, the figure label itself
does not change in size. It simply shows “Figure 1.1: Blah Blah Blah,
this is only an example…”. Is there a way to make the size of the label
match that of the caption.

Thank in advance to anyone who can help me.
