The 58 pages take 1:35 (95 seconds) with Lyx 1.5.5 (for PS) till gsview comes
up with the error message (PIV, 3 GHz, 3 GB RAM, Win XP Prof.)
Lyx 1.4.5 takes 1:25 and succeeds. Both need 6 rounds of Latex.

Problem with Lyx 1.5.5 (Windows, Miktex) when converting to PS

2008-07-23 Thread Michael Logies
Hello,

I have a 5 years old Lyx-file, a bit complicated, 50 pages. Converting with Lyx
1.5.5 (Windows XP Prof., Miktex, AFPL GS 8.54) to PS results in the error
message below. And Lyx is rather slow. I have Lyx 1.4.5 on the same machine and
it converts the Lyx-file (and is faster).
If have another Lyx 1.5.3 in Ubuntu (in a VMWare virtual machine running on the
same PC), which also converts (fast).

Two questions:
1. Any idea, how to solve the problem below? What does it mean?
2. Can I work in Lyx 1.5.5 and continue working on the document in Lyx 1.4.5 or
Lyx 1.5.3? Has the file format remained the same?

Thanks!

Michael

After eliminating spaces and german umlaute from the keywords of the

{hypernat}.
{cite} tolerates Umlaute (but does not work with hyperref), {natbib} does

Herbert,

thanks. When I replace spaces by "_" in my example file, {cite} is working.
I consider this a real bug within Lyx. It should warn when using spaces if
this is not an appropiate syntax for some Latex-macros.
I think it will be a lot of work replacing all spaces with an editor in my
lyx-file.

Interesting is that hyperref for example has no problem with these spaces.
Is there a general rule, that newer macros or packages can handle spaces?

Though {cite} would work now, it is stopped from working by hyperref, as I
see in my example file.
Juergen pointed to http://www.dante.de/faq/de-tex-faq/html/makros3.html#47
Perhaps natbib with hypernat would work better? Has anyone an idea, whether
this will work with spaces in the keywords of my references or not?

Hello Dekel,

I hoped that the option [pagebackref] from hyperref would take care of
this, but hyperref is not working with this option so far (a lot of
question marks instead of references (similiar to {cite}) and the PDF-File
finishes after the first page of the bibliography). Without pagebackref
it`s working fine.

PS: Does changing \usepackage{cite} into \usepackage{citesort} solves your

No, Lyx does not finish dvipdfm then. It generates 46 error message,
looking like this one:

I only want to write a thesis, perhaps one paper based on it. That`s it.
The way Lyx offers its references ("insert"/ "citation reference") is very

What happens if you export you lyx file to tex and then run latex by hand

Can you tell me how to run Latex manually (Miktex)? I was only using Lyx so

Jürgen,

I did not want to struggle with another program. I am using Lyx Qt on
Windows almost out of the box. I have experienced that any add-on might
work or might not work...
I "cut and paste" most of my references from different databases into Lyx,
and numbering of my references is changing automatically within Lyx without
invoking another program. That`s already quite comfortable. I don`t think
that I will have much more than 150 references (and I already have about
120 in Lyx), so bibtex might be overkill.

hyperref should know, that dvipdfm is used (dvipdfm=true). "Final"

I copied this into my preamble. In the text I find, what you see below. But
the result is, that I see nothing in the non-draft-mode (good). In the
draft mode I only see 2 numbers for footnotes after another, but not the
text of the footnote itself (the whole thing is not too important at the
moment - my professor hasn`t critized me so far for my too many and too
long footnotes which I need for documenting to myself what I did and when.)

Herbert,

this big distance between caption and graphic in floats is a bug for me.
How would you call it? An option? How to change this?

And it is still the better
way than dvipdfm. For example: you get no hyphenated
links with dvipdfm
I have hyphenated links in my footnotes and they are all fully shown and
working (I always click "generate hyperlink" when inserting the URL).
Within the text some cross references do not work (ending at the wrong
page), but I had no closer look at this. Hyperlinks to the bibliography do
work, that`s more important for me.

Acrobat will respect the bounding box of your EPS-File, but there are
other PDF-Viewer which will not.
it is a problem of the eps file not of acrobat.
As I wrote, Acrobat (5.1 and 6) shows my EPS-files according to my bounding
boxes.
But the Jaws PDF Editor 1.0 does not:
http://www.jawspdf.com/pdf_editor/index.html

So I think it is a problem with this Editor. Even after using the editor
for taking out single pages of the PDF-File, Acrobat shows them correctly,
but PDF Editor does not.
My EPS-files are simple. I have TIFF-Scans (20 MB), resize them to 1/4
within Irfanview (5 MB), print TIFF into an Apple-driver as postscript,
then use Ghostview for creating the bounding box and converting to EPS. As
written here, it has been impossible for me with Lyx 1.3.2 for Qt-Windows
to use another graphic format.

Hello,

here is described how to use some footnotes only in draft:

If you want to use this option for own commands like notes, than you can use this
option and output some notes only when the draft option is set. The following example
shows this for the arcticle class:
\newcommand{\myNote}[1]{%

My problem is that I don`t understand this code. How do I have to use it?

Herbert,

so far the problem above remains my only one with dvipdfm (some hyperlinks
within the text, generated by hyperref, are wrong, but that´s not too
import. Most hyperlinks are working).
But pdflatex is not only incompatible with hyperref (when counting of
tables has been changed, when endnotes are used together with hyperref),
but it produces really ugly results when used on floats with subfigures. 2
of my 4 subfigures in my float are not showing on the page at all - dvipdfm
places two rows of two in the upper part of the page, and it looks nice).

What are the advantages of pdflatex compared to dvipdfm? Does it make any
sense to try to get pdflatex working, if dvipdfm is working more or less okay?

Hello Andre,

I was thinking about the average user (doctors, biological sciences -
people who usually don`t do programming) who is using MS Word at the moment
but wants a reliable and easy to use software for writing a scientific book
with a lot of footnotes, pictures, cross references, TOC...

I am quite satisfied with Lyx though I`m using it only for 5 weeks now and
have written only about 40 pages (with some floats and tables). And I like,
that it is open source, because some parts of my thesis should be easily be
copied and integrated in other papers (I will put it on my website as a
lyx- and latex-file besides PDF). I had to discuss a bit with my professor
before he accepted PDF instead of Word97 which he wanted to use with its
"correction function" in our cooperation. Now he prints and corrects
manually, then sending me his corrections (we seldom see us personally).

But Lyx (Qt for Windows) is still not there that I can recommend it to a
typical Windows-User.
When I looked around I only found Framemaker (1600 Euro in its german
edition). Here I learnt about Scientific Word (500 to 600 USD):
http://www.mackichan.com/products/whichproduct.html
Scientific Word seems very similar to Lyx. And it is based on Latex, too.
So perhaps this product would be an easier migration path to the
Latex-world than Lyx is at the moment.
One advantage of Scientific Word is, that it has an integrated export to
RTF, connecting Latex to the MS-Word-World. I know, that this can be done
with free software from Latex to RTF, but it is still not integrated within
Lyx and I had no time to test this.
Has anyone first hand experience with Scientific Word? Is it more mature
than Lyx 1.3.2?

If I look into UserGuide.lyx into section 6.2 I find:

Is there anything else than Framemaker (for Windows), which is a real

Herbert,

when I introduce a third column in your example, it will not work anymore.

You write:
http://www.educat.hu-berlin.de/~voss/LaTeX/table/longtable.phtml
if you have a mix of longtable with and without captions, than write after
every longtable without a caption:
\addtocounter{table}{-1}

I was thinking about placing a float-table (only for the capton) directly
in front of and fixed to my longtable. But this does not work, because
\addtocounter{table}{-1} then leads to an error message, which says, that 2
table have the same name in the document now.

Herbert,

because I simply copied your ERT between two Lyx-documents into my table,
the tables are identical is this regard. But mine does not work - perhaps
because it is a long longtable or because I have more columns? Don`t know.
Without this ERT my table is processed.

this is a bad restriction of LyX. Write in the first or
last column in TeX \caption{...blah...}
Herbert,

this does not work. If I insert it without ERT, then only the text is
shown. When I insert it within a ERT, I get error messages. Any idea?

Has someone a better preamble?

this is at first a floating table which can only be

thanks, that solved the problem.

I did a little trick to do this (see attachment). I simply attached a float
in a fixed position to the "long table". Perhaps this will work...

Is there a way to exclude some part of the caption to show off in the the
list of tables?

Thanks again

Problem of inserting floating-graphic

2003-08-31 Thread Michael Logies
(Win XP Prof, Miketex 2.3, Lyx-Qt 1.3.2)

Hello,

I have problems inserting floating graphics into my *.lyx-File. I have one
graphic, that works. So I tried to copy and paste it within Lyx, then
changing the name of the file (to consort-checkliste.eps, 1,1 MB). But when
trying to use pdflatex, I get:

pdfTeX warning (ext4): destination with the same identifier (name{figure.1})
 \caption{Consort-Checkliste}
When doing it like described in the Users guide (Insert float, then insert
graphic there), I get 4 error messages (see below).

Any ideas?

Thanks

Michael

For example, `\def\a#1{...}' and `\a}' would produce

Bibliographic Database for Lyx-Qt for Windows?, was: Re: Papyrus and Lyx?

2003-08-30 Thread Michael Logies
At 20:01 30.08.2003 +0200, Herbert Voß wrote:

> Why do you want to use Papyrus?

Herbert,

because I have used it for about 10 years.
It is especially good in importing from Medline (Paperchase and Pubmed) and
in printing order forms (roter Fernleihschein, but my needle printer is
gone). In the past it worked fine with Word 5.0 (DOS).

At the moment I have started to write the references directly in Lyx. It
seems easy and quick, because I need only an alphabetic order of the
references and numbers in the text.

But I know, that a bibliographic database may offer more. Is there any
which will work together with Lyx-Qt for Windows? Pybliographer seems only
available for Linux.

Thanks

Papyrus and Lyx?

2003-08-30 Thread Michael Logies
Hello,

is anyone using Papyrus (bibliography software)
http://www.researchsoftwaredesign.com/
together with Lyx, which is an easy to use frontend for Latex?
http://www.home.zonnet.nl/rareitsma/lyx/
How might I use Lyx with Papyrus?

So my problem still seems to be that configure.bat is not working.
Okay, I tried to change configure.bat myself (and I know nothing about
batch-programming...):
I replaced the original configure.bat:
@echo off
rem Configure script for Win32
rem calls msys sh.exe
rem written by Ruurd Reitsma
echo %0
SET PATH=%~p0..\..\bin;%PATH%
echo %PATH%
%~p0..\..\bin\sh.exe --login %0

by this one:
echo %PATH%
c:\lyx\bin\sh.exe --login %0
I used the changed configure.bat only as an administrator:
Before using it I changed my path so that it included c:\lyx\bin at the
beginning.
Then I used "reconfigure" from inside Lyx. Then something was happening,
what did not happen before: A shell popped up and some configuration
happened. But "reconfigure" did not close as usual with this "restarting hint".
The result: I now can open the template koma-letter2.lyx. I can see the
*.dvi of it. But I have a side effect, and perhaps there are more:
Help/Latex configuration does not work anymore. A hint pops up, that the
file is not a *.lyx-file. The other help files work and I can open my
thesis I`m just working on as usual.

As an User:
If I switch to another user, nothing has changed: I still cannot use
koma-letter2.lyx, but Help/Latex configuration is still working. I did not
try to use the changed configure.bat here because of the unknown side effects.

scrlettr2 is fairly new, perhaps you had an oudated version of koma.
Hello Juergen,

I just compared
c:\miktex\localtexmf\tex\latex\koma-script (which I installed new for
Koma-script)
and
c:\miktex\texmf\tex\latex\koma-script (part of distribution)

They are identical and the newest. I got all packages only a few days ago
from ftp at Dante.de. I had rebuilt the filename database with the wizard
of Miktex.

I used the recommended dummy script (I called it dummy2.tex) for checking
the working of Koma-script:

\documentclass{scrartcl}
\begin{document}
dummy
\end{document}
I got a log-file (see below) which looks normal for me (as a latex beginner).
But if I replace scrartcl by scrlettr2,
\documentclass{scrlettr2}
\begin{document}
dummy
\end{document}
I get the error message:
