Re: Lyx error

2024-04-11 Thread Paolo M
Your lyx file raises the same error.
The option 'Use non-TeX fonts' cannot be selected, although the required
fontspec package is installed.
As i try to view the pdf rendering i get:

"The external program

xelatex

finished with an error. It is recommended you fix the cause of the external
program's error (check the logs). "

What is xelatex?
I suspect my texlive installation cannot accept spaces in file names and
directories any more.

thank you

Yes, It works if the cursor is on the right of the math inset. That is

- Open mu tables-test.lyx doc
- Enter the cursor in the table cell containing the math expression a+b,
but keep it outside the math inset
- Open the context menu (right mouse or touchpad button)

- Apply your changes ( i have set default additional space to 'top of row')
- You Will notice that the 'apply' button stays inactive, gray out.

I have put the cursor inside the cell containing the math expression.
I have noticed that putting the cursor in cells not containing the math
expression, editing table properties is allowed.
Is that a feature?

A more effective error correction mechanism

2021-07-29 Thread paolo m.
The editor in gmail underlines in red words that cannot be founf in its
vocabulary, as lyx does, but it differs in correction, carried out without
right clicking: just left clicking on that word pops up the list of 1)
alternatives and 2) possible splitting
Then
- if you click on any item of that list, word is corrected accordingly. Left
clicking on a word not underlined does not trigger any popups, just places
the cursor.
- if you delete the list of the alternatives, that word is included in you
personal dictionary

Please can anyone check this out?
I think it would be convenient to implement that mechanism in lyx.

thank you

Umask does not change and lyx starts. File privileges are changed, as
before.

'su lyx' changes file access privileges

2020-09-27 Thread paolo m.
Sometimes, while in user1 session, I find convenient launching lyx as user2
(same group as user1) to open a lyx file, through 'su'.
As user2 changes and save that file, access privileges are changed as well.
That does not happen when a text file is opened by kwrite, so it should be
something specific to lyx.

Before 'su' switch:
text file x-rw-rw-r--
lyx file xx.lyx-rw-rw-r--

Switching and modifying file x (by kwrite) and xx.lyx (by lyx):
  x -rw-rw-r--
  xx.lyx -rw---

(Same results when launching 'dolphin' file manager as user2 to open a lyx
file, through 'su'').

computer algebra system output

2020-02-27 Thread paolo m.
I would like the output of computer algebra systems (cas) not to replace
input command. Input command could be preserved in math mode, while cas
output would be displayed as graphic preview.
E.g.
Entered text:

Equation [x+1=0] yields [[ solve(x+1=0,x) ]]

with [] to mark math mode and [[]] to mark math mode input to Maxima cas,
would be rendered as

Equation x+1=0 yields x=-1

Any comments?

thank you

While my test file is open, as I change the instant preview size from 1.0 to
1.2 i get :

 Assertion false violated in
file: ../../src/CoordCache.cpp, line: 31
There has been an error with this document.
LyX will attempt to close it safely.
The current document was closed.

Followed by :

SIGSEGV signal caught!
Sorry, you have found a bug in LyX, hope you have not lost any data.
Please read the bug-reporting instructions in 'Help->Introduction' and send
us a bug report, if necessary. Thanks!
Bye.

Then I open another file and perform the above change in preview size,
eveything is ok.
Reopening my test file afterwards, red marks are not shown any more

That is not only true when saving to a new file. Also when saving the
same file, access privileges are restored to -rw-
I have to chmod before syncing, each time, , that is very annoying.

lyx changes the file access privileges

2018-11-24 Thread paolo m.
As i change a lyx file name (say test1.lyx ) with a new name (say
test2.lyx) , by the command 'file -> save as', the new file created has
the usual access mode, but, when saved, its mode change so that is
inaccessible to groups and to the world.
That does not happen when test1.lyx is opened by a text editor, e.g.
kate, then saved with a new name (say test3.lyx)

Here is the result:
% ll *lyx

pol pol test3.lyx 1745 21:54 -rw-rw-r--
pol pol test2.lyx 1746 21:53 -rw---
pol pol test1.lyx 1745 21:52 -rw-rw-r--

background of branches

Both background and text are dark, black in branches in 2.3.1.

Add to this that background of new branches is red.

branch background colour the same as normal text background.
What is wrong?

Sorry for my delay, i am not a 'heavy' news readers user.
I do not know whether that feature would be popular, but it would be
useful for a number of lyx users.
I am not able to 'learn' how not to make typos. Do you?
Is is not a matter of learning, it is our mind functioning that swaps letter
positions or doubles next letters while quickly writing text lines
Restoring the correct letters order for each word quickly would be a
great favour to a number of long paper writers.

margin notes

2000-09-15 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia

Width allowed to margin notes seems to be predefined, independent
on the right border witdh. What latex command to change that value?

thank you

Pol

P.S.
Maybe making that parameter be a function of the border width, could
be a good idea, allowing margin notes automatically fitting available
room.

In vi sesions, when pressing "m" key and then a single ascii character (say "a"),
you simply add a non-visible control character, at the cursor position, within the
vi buffer you are editing. You say that the mark "a" has been defined in your document.

Whenever you press "'" then "a", you are quickly brought to the line that contains
that mark "a".

The character "'" is a command in vi. Another command (as far as i can remember, it
is "`") brings you immediately on the exact cursor position (rather than the start
of the line) you marked before.

All control characters are discarded, when saving the doc.

2000-04-10 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia

I noticed that extended ascii characters cannot be included in labels
to equations.
In the present case, it happens that the character "à" is correctly rendered
within the label, while in the editing session, but it disappears the next
time the file will be opened.
That happens even though latin1 encoding has been set in the document layout.

Could that limitation be easily removed in the netx LyX version?

subscripts alignment

2000-03-28 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia

I noticed that subscripts, in math mode, are not aligned at the same level.
In postscript and dvi translation of the expression (math mode) r_a - r_b
subscripts a and b lay on different lines, b being on the lower one.

how to fix that ugly rendering?

thank you for your help

How to import files in sgml format?

1999-11-24 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia

I would like to import files in sgml format.
Altough sgmltools-2 and docbook have been installed, i can see no 'linuxdoc'
or 'sgml' prompt within inport menu.
Prompt for 'linuxDoc' format within export menu is whown, though, when sgml
(linuxdoc article) class has been selected in my doc layout.

What is missing in lyx setup?

thank you for your help

Changing Language

1999-11-08 Thread Paolo M. Pumilia

Hi,
I have just tried to change language to a lyx doc that i have just
written using default setup.
It is a short text with title, author, abstract and standard headings.
It cannot be converted into dvi, due to errors, both at the title section:

The fisrt one is

  Missing \begin(document)
  1.20 \ProvidesLanguage(i
talian)

Notice the word i-talian is broken.

The second one:

  ! Undefined control sequence.
  I.20 \ProvidesLanguage(italian)

The same happens if i choose 'english' as language:

  Missing \begin(document)
  1.20 \ProvidesLanguage(e
nglish)

Notice the word e-nglish is broken.

Such error does not arise when the default language is set.
How to get over that problem?

Thank you for your suggestions
