Importing a spreadsheet is something I very often do in LyX but I use quite a different way! Usually my finished product is a pdf file, harder to edit and respecting exactly the formatting I want. Here is what I do in a few words: printing the spreadsheet table in a Postscript file, convert it in encapsulated Postscript (eps or epsi) and insert it as an image in LyX. When exported in pdf, the fonts are embedded, the table is exactly as it was in the spreadsheet and, as it is vectorial, il can fit any space I want in the page. So here is what I do: 1. print the spreadsheet table in a file, be sure to avoid header or footer unless you really need them; 2. convert the printed ps file in eps format in a terminal: ps2epsi the_printed_file.ps 3. the table is cropped precisely in the epsi file with ps2epsi, if you leave a header then the header will be part of the cropped table, don't forget it! 4. In LyX, simply insert the eps file as an image. Don't forget to keep the ratio while giving the wanted width or height of the table. 5. Export the resulting LyX file in pdf and voilà ! Try to be uniform while creating the table, respect the look and feel of the document you want to insert the table into, especially use the same font. This way of doing things can be done also directly by inserting a pdf file in the LyX document (using ERT), but I prefer the eps way as it gives me more control easyly. I compiled LyX 1.5.3 for my Linux distro Ubuntu 7.10. I'm a long time user of LyX. But since QT4 version of LyX, it is impossible for me to select anything using my mouse in LyX. Even selecting with the cursor, holding shift, etc, has erratic behavior. The mouse select something, shade in blue, then diseapers without selecting anything. I checked in KDE 3.5.x and there is no problem. So this behavior is Gnome specific. Someone else has this problem? Raymond p.s. LyX 1.5.0 beta1 and UTF-8 copy/paste

I wanted to try it especially for UTF-8 as Ubuntu 6.10 is UTF-8 based by default (like all modern linux distros). A copy/paste from another application (Gedit, Firefox, etc) to LyX gives me garbage for every diacritic sign (accented letters, ç, etc). I thought that a copy from UTF-8 to UTF-8 application would be easier :-( There are other annoyances in LyX 1.5.0 beta1 (QT4): - using the mouse to select a word, a few words or even a paragraph often fails, the beginning of the mouse selection or the ending selection are often forgotten with Gnome 2.16 (and the behavior is worst if you use Beryl); - I can import any other LyX files but I can't export to any previous version of LyX, I'm having this message: «Une erreur s'est produite lors de l'exécution de python -tt '/usr/share/lyx-1.5.0beta1/lyx2lyx/lyx2.» Indicating that an error occured while executing python; - Previewing a file in the dvi viewer sometimes doesn't work, I'm having such a message: «Fichier inexistant : /tmp/lyx_tmpdir12244R5TMCz/lyx_tmpbuf1/blabla.dvi» or Inexistant File: /tmp...blabla.dvi as if LyX looses the dvi temporary file I know this is a beta. It was with Mandrake 10.0 Official and KDE's own Mandrake RPM. Some apps had the problem, other not. For example, no dead keys accent with LyX, Scribus and Kwriter but no problem with OpenOffice.org, Kspread or Kate. I went back to KDE 3.2 on Mandrake. But I tried the move to KDE 3.3 on Slackware 10 (tgz packages) and everything went fine, the dead keys are doing their job on my ca_enhanced keyboard (French Canadian). So? Package geometry doesn't seem to work at all, margins are not respected and if I use legal paper then the text overlap towards the bottom or start too far down on the page. What am I doing wrong ? Qt version is really pleasing to use and the viisual comfort with aa fonts is great.
I do have 2 small concerns.
1. There are some not translated options in the different combo boxes (I use it in
french) -- if I note the different missing sentences, who must be advised? This
problem occurs in both version (Qt and XForm).
2. Only in Qt version: you can't do a vertical space fill for a paragraph, it doesn't
work. Selecting « ressort vertical » (vertical fill I guess in the english text) does
nothing. The other options work. I had to use \vspace{\fill} in ERT to get my
paragraph pushed at the bottom of the page.

Inserting an URL: not anyone?

No images preview in LyX 1.1.6-8mdk and pdf 1.3 instead of 1.2
I'm using LyX since 15 months, what a great tool! I have two questions. 1- I recently upgraded to Mandrake Linux 8.1 which includes LyX 1.1.6fix3 (July 24th). Almost everything is fine and Ghostscript 6.51 works OK too. DVI, PDF, XDVI, everything work except that LyX can't preview any images whether they are black and white, level of grey or color. I can preview any images in the DVI or Postscript preview but not directly inside LyX as before. I tried to replace LyX 1.1.6-8mdk with lyx.org's 1.1.6fix3 (even if it is suposed to be the same version) but the behavior stays the same. Am I alone with this problem? 2- How can I produced 1.3 pdf instead pf the default 1.2 from whithin LyX? Thank's for your time, I really appreciate this list that I read everyday. This question was probably asked but I didn't find it in the mail archives. Is it possible to install both cvs 1.2 and LyX 1.1.6fix3 on the same box? I downloaded yesterday cvs 1.2 and I want to give it a try but I want to be sure that files created with cvs 1.2 can be opened by 1.1.6fix3. 2 columns document with columns of different width
I would like to know if it is possible to create a document wich has 2 columns of different width, for exemple a wide column at the right side of the page, approx 13 cm wide, and a smaller one of 4 cm at the left side. The main text would be in the main column, and the left column would be used only for section or subsections titles, tables titles, or figures titles. I tried with a reverse margin note but I lost the result if I change the basic font of the document from time to helvetica for instance. I'm responsible for Education Bulletins where I work and I would like to give a try to LyX for documents such as this one: http://www.meq.gouv.qc.ca/STAT/Bulletin/bulletin_15.pdf (225 ko in french) or http://www.meq.gouv.qc.ca/STAT/Bulletin/bulletin_15an.pdf (177 ko translated in english). helvetica fonts (Format--Document--Font properties) nothing happens.

itself on the right side. Am I doing something wrong?

2 columns document with columns of different width
I would like to know if it is possible to create a document wich has 2 columns of different width, for exemple a wide column at the right side of the page, approx 13 cm wide, and a smaller one of 4 cm at the left side. The main text would be in the main column, and the left column would be used only for section or subsections titles, tables titles, or figures titles. I tried with a reverse margin note but I lost the result if I change the basic font of the document from time to helvetica for instance. I'm responsible for Education Bulletins where I work and I would like to give a try to LyX for documents such as this one: http://www.meq.gouv.qc.ca/STAT/Bulletin/bulletin_15.pdf (225 ko in french) or http://www.meq.gouv.qc.ca/STAT/Bulletin/bulletin_15an.pdf (177 ko translated in english). I enclosed with this email a test lyx file with the reverse margin note.
It works with times fonts, but if I try to change the entire document to
helvetica fonts (Format-->Document-->Font properties) nothing happens.
I then select all the text and I do Format-->Caracters-->Font Family
changing it to SanSerif then I loose the reverse margin note that places
itself on the right side. Am I doing something wrong?
