I am writing a rather long equation and I'd like to get the = sign
and the RHS on the next line. When I press Ctrl-Enter a line break is
generated alright but the upper line is left aligned while the lower
line is right aligned. this way the equation is still longer tha
the cells that lyx
creates for the LHS, the "=", and the RHS for that line.
Is there a better way than to create a new multiline equation and copy
over all lines except the invalid ones?

What worked even better than "cuted" is \begin{figure*} because "cuted"
follows strange rules when it places the text around two-column equations
and "midfloat" which should do better did not work. I suspect it did not

I'm assuming your document class is derived from "article". I don't
know what else you have in the preamble, but in order for this to
work one needs to make sure that no other package re-defines the
counters after your modifications. So
