Googling has failed me. I'm trying to add the \OE ligature to a footnote
using an ERT. This produces an error message an "undefined control
sequence" error message.
Could someone confirm that this should work? Might the (otherwise not so
helpful) error message have to do with the "oe"

well, i can have footnotes in the title paragraph and in the author
paragraph with no problems. however, i cant change to arabics for the
footnotes. i try inserting
\renewcommand{\thefootnote}{\arabic{footnote}}
in ERT before the title -> doesnt do the trick ?

Here's a way to set up standard, book-like footnotes in LyX--in other words,
notes that look like this:
1. Here's the first note.

OK, It is probably more complicated than this, but I suspect that
killing a footnotes by hand is not the right solution. After all,
these are still notes, the only difference is the way they are presented.

You have to make it in two steps: first \footnotemark in the
place in table, where you want the mark, and than after the end
of table \footnotetext.
