LyX Mac Computer Algebra System Path

2015-01-16 Thread Richard Stanton
Hi everyone,

I am trying to use the Computer Algebra System in LyX 2.1.2.2 on a Mac.

I have downloaded Maxima - version 5.30
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/maxima/files/Maxima-MacOS/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/maxima/files/Maxima-MacOS/). Its installed in
the Applications folder.

To configure with LyX I have used the Preference-Paths-PATH prefix field. I
have set many values, using a colon : to separate:
/usr/texbin:...:/Applications/Maxima.app

When I create a simple equation $1+1$, right click and select Maxima, an equals
sign appears but not an answer.

I assume the path value is incorrect.

If Maxima is installed at /Applications/Maxima.app, what should be placed in
the PATH prefix field?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Richard

Stefano,

put the Mac-Basic on a mac that uses this and load all missing packages
with tlmgr until it works.

Then run something like

tlmgr list|grep ^i|awk '{print $2}' mactexmedium.txt

Now you install Mac-Basic on her computer taransfer the file and run
something like

sudo tlmgr install `cat mactexmedium.txt`

which leaves her with a minimal installation that has all missing
packages. I am quite sure once she has started to edit and sees the
output from a compile run, she'll be convinced.

Once she's done and she really doesn't like it you can do

sudo rm -rf /usr/local/texlive/2013basic

to remove the 473MB (which reside on my box) :-)-O

Re: Installing Lyx/Mac w/out MacTeX. Is it possible?

2014-01-31 Thread stefano franchi
Thanks to everyone for the many suggestions.

To clarify the issue and sum up the outcome:

My question was really about the Mac installer, not about the functionality
of LyX without a suitable TeX installation. In other words, I was asking:

Can a minimally computer savvy Mac user install LyX only with no help and
obtain a working LyX-editing only environment?

And the answer, I am happy to report, is yes. Aside from the puzzlement
raised by the Untrusted source dialog, installation (of 2.0.6) went
smoothly and we are happily cooperating.

On the other hand, on the alternative question of How to provide a
minimal yet still fully functioning LyX+TeX installation I particularly
liked Eberhard's solution. It was not viable in my case, since the user is
an ocean away and working on a crappy (and expensive) internet connection,
but I think it should be kept as a LyX recipe for space constrained Mac
users, a category that is growing fast now that traditional hard drives
have gone the way of the dodo on the MacBook Air.

Perhaps it should be put on the wiki? And since it is really not Mac-only
(Mac-Basic is just the Mac-version of TexLive's basic scheme, I guess),
perhaps it could be generalized to other platforms as well.

Cheers,

Stefano

Re: Installing Lyx/Mac w/out MacTeX. Is it possible?

2014-01-31 Thread Dr Eberhard W Lisse
Stefano,

so she can actually edit the files? Cool. I was wondering if the
config run (using luatex) would work.

Now what you also can do to cooperate, is to use SVN (see Additional
Features Section 7.2), which is really, really cool.

I have myself some experience with remoteness, being an Obstetrician
and Gynaecologist in Africa, though in Windhoek connectivity is
starting to become useful.

What I do between my house and the practice (and of course the
laptop) is something like this :-)-O

sudo tlmgr install `ssh USER@HOST.DOMAIN tlmgr list|grep ^i|awk
'{print $2}'|sed s/://g`

That you can easily install into crontab and or whatever scheduler
you like and run this on a number of hosts, so you need to only
update one. If you can not predict where changes are happening one
will have to figure out a more complicated round robin scheme :-)-O

But you can configure the working BasicMacTeX and then tar the
update /usr/local/texlive. Put all on a stick, DHL it over there
and she must install and then untar over /usr/local/texlive to bring
it up to what is required.

Mabye someone writes a shell script for her to take care of the
command line stuff, but that's not a big deal. And, if the
university has serious Mac programming resources, someone can make
an installer for her that does all of this with a click.

greetings, el

Now what you also can do to cooperate, is to use SVN (see Additional

sudo tlmgr install `ssh USER@HOST.DOMAIN tlmgr list|grep ^i|awk

That you can easily install into crontab and or whatever scheduler

update one. If you can not predict where changes are happening one
will have to figure out a more complicated round robin scheme :-)-O

But you can configure the working BasicMacTeX and then tar the

it up to what is required.

an installer for her that does all of this with a click.

Stefano,

put the Mac-Basic on a mac that uses this and load all missing packages
with tlmgr until it works.

Then run something like

tlmgr list|grep ^i|awk '{print $2}' > mactexmedium.txt

Now you install Mac-Basic on her computer taransfer the file and run
something like

sudo tlmgr install `cat mactexmedium.txt`

which leaves her with a minimal installation that has all missing
packages. I am quite sure once she has started to edit and sees the
output from a compile run, she'll be convinced.

Once she's done and she really doesn't like it you can do

sudo rm -rf /usr/local/texlive/2013basic

to remove the 473MB (which reside on my box) :-)-O

Installing Lyx/Mac w/out MacTeX. Is it possible?

2014-01-29 Thread stefano franchi
I am trying to convince a Mac-only colleague to use LyX on a common
project. She resists installing TeX on her system, for a number of reasons.

But she won't need to typeset anything---I'll be in charge of that---and
will only use LyX to edit jointly produced file.

A LyX-only installation would suit her needs perfectly. But I can't figure
out from the lyx.org page if this is possible at all. The page says:

LyX for Mac OS X is available here:
LyX-2.0.7+qt4.dmgftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/2.0.7/LyX-2.0.7+qt4.dmg.
Before you install LyX you need to install a TeX system such as
MacTeXhttp://www.tug.org/mactex/.

Is that requirement enforced? I don't have a Mac at my disposal to try it
out.

Best,

Stefano

FYI, do not use that binary. It has issues. We will be releasing 2.0.7.1
shortly. You can use 2.0.6 for the time being, or wait a day or two.

I don't think so. LyX works fine without LaTeX; it's just that you
cannot compile documents with LaTeX. But you can edit LyX files.

Note that some things won't work as nice - like the "preview" option
available for some ERT or equations which get typeset in place by running
latex in the background. Other than that, it should work as a text editor
just fine.

LyX-Mac-1.6 and MacTeX2010 installation problem

2011-02-22 Thread Kerensa McElroy
Hi,

I'm trying to get LyX up and running on my system (Mac OS X 10.6.2) for the
first time. I've installed MacTeX2010 without a problem. Then when I try and
install Lyx, I get the following problem:

1. Removing obsolete files
... Done removing obsolete files.

2. Testing to see if old LyX user's folder should be moved to new location
... Done moving LyX user's directory to new location.

3. (No preferences file found at ~/Library/'Application Support'/LyX-1.6/.)

4. Installing default LyX templates
... Done installing default LyX templates.

5. Installing LyX's special LaTeX files
• Found TeX installation at .
• Local TeX directory set to ~/Library/texmf.
• Installed LyX's additional LaTeX .cls and .sty files.

*** ERROR: Cannot run texhash command. Please run manually.

... Done.

After, all my classes are 'unavailable'. Also, when i try and run sudo texhash
from terminal, it simply says 'command not found'.

I've trawled the web for a solution to this problem. It looks like a lot of
other people have come across this. However, none of the
suggested solutions are working for me.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Kerensa.

My suspicion is that you really don't have MacTeX installed (at least
not properly); otherwise, you wouldn't have a problem running texhash
from the Terminal. You need to find where your MacTeX binaries are
(default is /usr/texbin) and make sure that path is one of the entries
in LyX Preferences Paths PATH Prefix.

avail originally,
however it jogged me into working out a solution now that I've read it again!

Here is the complete instructions to solving this problem, for anyone who needs
them:

1. change into directory /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/universal-darwin
2. type sudo ./texhash (and enter password)
3. open lyx, go to LyXPreferencesPaths PATH Prefix. Remove whatever else is
there and replace with /usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/universal-darwin. Save.
4. Go to LyX Reconfigure.
5. Close LyX and open it again.

This looks to me like a workaround for a botched MacTeX installation.
Take a look at:

http://www.tug.org/mactex/2010/What_Is_Installed.pdf

You should have a softlink at /usr/texbin that points to
/usr/local/texlive/2010/bin/universal-darwin. If not, then something
went wrong, and I'd wonder whether you might encounter other problems
down the road.

I'd suggest checking to see that everything was installed where that
document says it should be, and then opening System Preferences,
clicking on the TeX Distribution button at the bottom, and ensuring
that TeXLive-2010 is selected. If that creates the /usr/texbin
softlink, then you should use that in LyX -- restoring the original
list for PATH Prefix in LyX's preferences. If not, when you upgrade to
MacTeX-2011, LyX won't know how to find it.

list for PATH Prefix in LyX's preferences. If not, when you upgrade to
MacTeX-2011, LyX won't know how to find it.

hmm. No /usr/texbin softlink. And no tex installations at all listed in system
preferences.

So, I repeated the installation for MacTeX2010, exactly as it says to. Same
problem.

Any suggestions?

I'd try the MacTeX people; their support page is here:

I installed Qt and LyX via MacPorts. '$ port installed | grep qt' says I have

Playing with the zoom provides some relief: the default zoom was 150%, and when
I increased it all the way up to 300% at least the cursor didn't appear in
front of the comma before deleting the 1. However, it still appears in the
middle of the space between the comma and the second 'w', and 300% isn't really
a zoom level I'd like to work with long term.
Changing the default Roman font from 'Times' to 'Times New Roman' makes the
text cursor behave properly. I had to increase the zoom to 200% though, since
TNR is such a small font.

thanks for the ideas.

Spellchecking on LyX/Mac

To my knowledge, the instructions on the wiki for getting cocoAspell
to work with LyX are not out of date, and you can follow them without
using the Terminal at all. It should work. So try it, and report back

Stephen has native spellchecking support for the upcoming LyX-2.0 (for
which the 5th alpha was recently released). You might try that to see
if it works for you (and report back to the list with any positive or
negative experiences), but be aware that this alpha release is not
something I'd recommend using for serious work.

to work with LyX are not out of date, and you can follow them without
using the Terminal at all. It should work. So try it, and report back
any troubles you might have.

Stephen has native spellchecking support for the upcoming LyX-2.0 (for
which the 5th alpha was recently released). You might try that to see
if it works for you (and report back to the list with any positive or
negative experiences), but be aware that this alpha release is not
something I'd recommend using for serious work.

What are System Requirements for LyX Mac OS X?

2009-07-06 Thread Pierfranco Minsenti
Dear all,

I would like to replace my LyX 1.5.4 version on my iBook with MAC OS X
10.3.9 (Panther) with the new 1.6.3 version of LyX but I have two
questions:

1) compatibility between LyX 1.6.3 and my version of the MAC OS X: I am
unable to find on http://wiki.lyx.org/Mac/Mac or at
http://www.lyx.org/Download information about the system requirements for
version 1.6.3. Is this version compatible with MAC OS X 10.3.9 or not?
Apple downloads at
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/unix_open_source/lyx.html says it
requires at least MAC OS X 10.4 (Tiger); VersionTracker at
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/47551 says it is
compatible with MAC OS X 10.3.9; softt32
http://www.soft32.com/download_226661.html says it requires Tiger.
So what is the truth about compatibility with the OS?

2) what is the compatibility with documents written with the old version.
Are there any problem?

Thank you for your cooperation.

Actually, I'm not sure. I know it's compatible with 10.4; 10.3.9 might
work, though I don't have any such machine around to test with. Try it

Short answer is that there is no problem. Every version of LyX can
read file formats of any earlier version. The latest bug fix release
of the 1.x series can also read the 1.(x+1) file format. For example,
1.5.7 can read the 1.6.x file format. (1.5.4 was released before the
file format for 1.6 was finalized.)

pdflatex epstopdf problem on lyx/mac

2008-11-19 Thread Konstantin Milbradt
Hello,

I am running Lyx 1.5.6 on both a windows vista pc and a recently acquired
mac os 10.5 (intel). the windows pc has a full installation of miktex and
the mac of mactex both up to date (as of nov 2008) and lyx reconfigured. (I
tried Lyx 1.6 and it gave the same results)

my paper includes numerous eps graphics.

the lyx file compiles without problems under windows via pdflatex.

the same file does not compile on the mac via pdflatex (although it does via
the dvi detour - but some functionality is lost that way). the erorr code i
get is
An error occurred whilst running epstopdf
--
outfile='0_graphics.eps
(It is cut off at the end)

How do i get the file to compile under pdflatex without the detours of
converting the eps to another file format or via the dvi.
I am aware of
http://www.mail-archive.com/lyx-users@lists.lyx.org/msg55007.html, but it
seems to only relate to windows installers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

lyx/mac and texshop

2008-07-09 Thread Stephen Buonopane

I have just upgraded to LyX/Mac 1.5.5 and TeXShop 2.14 on OS X 10.5.3
I use TeXShop as my pdf viewer since it automatically updates when I
do View-Update in LyX.

Or at least it used to automatically update.

In my prior set-up (Lyx 1.4 and OS X 10.4), View-Update would
automatically show the updated pdf in TexShop and bring the window to
the front if it was hidden.
Now in order to see the updated pdf in TeXShop I have to click on the
pdf window.

I have the viewer preference set as
open -a 'texshop.app'

I do have the Automatic Update preference checked in TexShop.
Note that if I am manually editing a Latex file in TexShop then the
pdf window updates as expected with no extra clicks required.

Just wondering if any other LyX/Mac folks can confirm this behavior.

Skim.app udpates in the background and leaves the LyX window in front,
no clicks of any sort required

So that would seem to be the best choice.
I guess the change must be due to TeXShop? I will report it there.
