Paul,

I didn't find anything useful in the manual, either.

Have you been able to insert short titles in KS Report titles in the past?

Haven't tried.

I'll not use the document title in the headers, then; I'll use the chapter
titles instead (and they're all short anyway).

I had the cursor at the head of the title; the Users Guide said to put it at
the end of the title. Neither position showed it in the Insert menu.

Alt-a moves the cursor to the head of the line; 1 inserts a 1 there.

Short Titles in book (Koma-script)

2010-09-19 Thread Doris Spori
Hi

I wrote my thesis in Lyx. Some of my chapter titles are quite long,
so I'd like to use short titles to appear in the page headers.
If I add the optional short title to a chapter and then only compile the
chapter, it works fine. Also the latex code looks how it should:
\chapter[Roughness]{Beyond the Lotus Effect: Roughness Influences on Wetting
over a Wide Surface-Energy Range\label{cha:6_BeyondLotusEffect}}

However, when I want to compile the book as a pdf, the following error message
appears:
Use of \...@chapter doesn't match its definition.
Use of \...@chapter doesn't match its definition.
Missing \endcsname inserted.
Extra \endcsname.
Use of \...@chapter doesn't match its definition.

The error message Use of \...@chapter doesn't match its definition. is
described
as:
 ...nergy Range\label{cha:6_BeyondLotusEffect}}

If you say, e.g., `\def\a1{...}', then you must always
put `1' after `\a', since control sequence names are
made up of letters only. The macro here has not been
followed by the required stuff, so I'm ignoring it.

So, I assume it thinks the label is the problem. However, I can remove the short
title again and the book is well compiled, also with the label.

Does anyone have an idea what could be the problem? I'm grateful for any help on
this.

I'm working on Windows Seven with Lyx version 1.6.7. The document class is book
(KOMA-Script). The language of the user interface in German (which I would
prefer to be in English, but I couldn't figure out how to change it. Doesn't
work under Tools/Settings (Werkzeue/Einstellungen)).

With best regards,
Doris

Hello! Thank you very much for your answer. The trick worked for me too,
and is remarkably hassle-free.

My solution:

\markright{short}
\section{looong title}
\markright{short}

The only thing is that the section number does not appear in the header
that way. So, assuming it was section A, I had to put in the following:

\markright{A. SHORT TITLE}
\section{looong title}
\sectionmark{short title}

The long title will appear in the TOC.

It does, no problem there.

But i think that this will cause
problems when the section starts on a new page...

I have not noticed that.

I haven't tried it with chapters; maybe there is a problem that the
short title appears on the page before the new chapter (because this
always uses a new page)!?

Actually, the same problem cannot happen with chapters, since the first
page of the chapter has no header. Then, from the second page onward, all
is fine, it follows whatever \chaptermark you decided to give it.

Cheers,
Catherine

Oh, thank you, i haven't noticed that yet. There is just another dirty trick
from my side (maybe Jean Marc's memoir-class is better advised... ;):

to include the section name you could write:
\markright{\thesection\ short}  [same with \thechapter]
But before defining the new section the counter for the new section is on the
old value, it is one to low. So you could add artificially 1 and subtract it
afterwards:

\addtocounter{section}{1} \markright{\thesection\ SHORT}
\addtocounter{section}{-1}
\section{LOOONG}
\markright{\thesection\ SHORT}

Short titles in fancyheader: delayed reaction

2006-08-19 Thread Catherine Heyrendt

When I use the ERT \chaptermark{my shorter title} in order to have a
shorter chapter title in the header, there is a delayed reaction. It
works well for all pages, but not for the first page, the one with the
actual chapter title. Instead, I get the full title inelegantly cut in the
header. Any ideas how to get the chapter title page to work too?

The problem was mentioned almost 3 years ago (see below) but I couldn't
find any answers.

Many thanks,
Catherine

Hello LyX-List,

In a document I use fancy pagestyle and I want the chapters and
sectiontitles to be printed in short form in the header, so some of the
older E-mails tell that the command needed is:

\sectionmark{abc}

and it works for all the pages where no new section is started. But on
this page the short chapter-title but the long (original) section-title
is displayed in the header; so another E-mail tells that the pagestyle
ist set to plain at the beginning of new chapters - is it the same with
beginnings of new sections, and: is this the problem? - can I change
this?

Try to use instead InsertShort Title to specify the shorter version
of the chapter title.

Actually, I spoke too soon. This solution does sort my header problem, but
it creates another one. In the toc, I then get the short title, but I
would like the full title to appear.

Google fancyplain. This is an alternative page style (also defined in
fancyhdr.sty IIRC) that allows you to specify headers/footers separately
for ordinary pages (which fancy style does) and for title pages
(including first page of a chapter), which fancy style skips. I'm not

Hello LyX-List,

In a document I use fancy pagestyle and I want the chapters and
sectiontitles to be printed in short form in the header, so some of the
older E-mails tell that the command needed is:

\sectionmark{abc}

and it works for all the pages where no new section is started. But on
this page the short chapter-title but the long (original) section-title
is displayed in the header; so another E-mail tells that the pagestyle
ist set to plain at the beginning of new chapters - is it the same with
beginnings of new sections, and: is this the problem? - can I change
this?

high quality and customizable class, I suggest to look up memoir. It
has a great manual that first explains how to typeset a book and
second how to use memoir commands.

Bruce Would the purchase of the TeXbook be the next step? Or should I

If you want to read about LaTeX, the TeXbook is definitely not the

6.3 Specifying Short Titles with Optional Arguments

2005-06-01 Thread Bruce Ernest Weller
The captioned reference, from the User Guide, appears clear enough and
works well in the Section environment but the option is, as far as I
can see, not available in the Section* environment.

Not sure of the rationale for this decision. My problem is typesetting
an old-fashioned book where, for the their pains, the authors-
translators have chosen to head each separate article along the lines of
Article XXIV - The old system of wars of position and the modern system
of marches and the Roman numerals run sequentially (regardless of
chapter) through the book.

Can I force the opt box into the Section* environment or should I
try to work out how to number (Roman) the Section* environments
independently of the Chapters? I have been unable to locate any obvious
reference to either approach (or to think of another).

I would be grateful for any hints for this little glitch ---I am
reluctant to lose the slightly antique flavour of the book by tampering
too much with the style adopted.

In the definition of the Title style, add
OptionalArgs  1

Then you will be able to use InsertShort title to insert your shorrt

You can set
  InTitle 0
or remove any 'InTitle 1' in the title layouts.

Can you tell me how titles work in hermes?

Ok, thank you.

The article title is generated by \maketitlepage and not by \maketitle. I
could redefine the \maketitle command but since I have to send the LaTeX file,
I prefer to insert \maketitlepage as ERT.

If you can wait until 1.3.1, you will be able to specify
  TitleLatexName maketitlepage
in your layout file.

PS: if you come up with what you think is a good hermes style, feel
free to submit it for LyX :)

Thank you for your help,
