Re: Apple kills my little mini with Sierra

2016-09-28 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
For one thing, braille support works fantastically. So much so, let me tell
you something.

I've got here an Alva Satalite 584 Pro. Tell me a screen reader in Windows
may I add, a modern screen reader, that works with it straight out of the
box, just by plugging it in via USB, not even plugging in the power cord,
and just letting it run bus powered. I guarantee you, you won't find one,
as it's too obsolete. Now, on the mac side with the most up to date version
of OSX, regardless the type of mac, ok, fine, newer systems, you'll need a
USB to USB C adapter, but big freakin' deal, they're like, what, 10, maybe
15 bucks on Amazon, if even that, and that's not even for just prime
membership pricing? Anyway, you plug it in, and boom! No need even to
start Voiceover back up to refresh things. It just works. Might I add,
seeing that OSX is based off of Darwin, which is based off Unix, oh, and
might I add, Linux is also based off of Unix, and being I know Linux uses
the BRLTTY interface, odds are, so does OSX. I don't know that for a fact,
so don't put proverbial words in my mouth that I never fully clamed, but if
I had to guess, I'd say it's incredibly likely that it's using that same
engine.

I find foreign language support to be freaking steller on the mac with
braille, etc. Look at all the new voices that came out with OSX once
Mavericks was released. Then, with El Capitan, we got even more, like Ava,
Alison, etc.

On a final note, you say that the Linux terminal doesn't really give you
good support for social media. This depends on what you're defining as
social media. If you're talking about Twitter, for example, then why not
use something like ttytter. And before anyone makes a real smarky smart
butt joke about that which would be totally disgusting, look at how that is
spelled, as I didn't say, t i t t e r. I said, t t y! t t e r.

My point is, I feel you have every right to your opinion, and though I
totally disagree with you, I'll stand for you to be able to speak your right
of opinion until the end. I don't think the mac's really degraded that much
though like you say you fear. Are there issues that need to be fixed, which
have been over and over reported? Yes. Is it totally irritating that Apple
hasn't fixed them? Yes. Absolutely it is! But, I don't know I'd go so
far as to say the mac is totally degrading. That's a bit overkill in my
probably by most observed, not, so humble opinion.

Well, using Linux in the console, if you can get used to it, is very
accessible, but not moddern enough to be very productive in today's social
media stuff. Yes, the Mac accessibility is usable, but for how much longer?
How much more will it degrade? That's what I worry about.

At the end of the day, the initial high cost is just that. Also unlike

Guys,

Could this be a disk permissions thing? Is there a way in Disk Utility that
we can check/repair? I know since El Capitan, they removed that option from

I am not sure that its practical to look into the future and wonder
"how much longer". I think its self defeating. Without a doubt, more can
be done especially with braille support. I prefer to keep plugging away
at what I use now and do MY best to make it work for me.

I do not think I have been using a Mac long enough to agree or
disagree that accessibility is degrading. I hear the frustration. I keep
mine to myself. (smiles) I contend however, that the mainstream market
as a whole is evolving so rapidly that more issues crop up and we as
blind consumers are not the only ones affected.

So let's choose a volunteer here who excels in braille and ship
him/her off to Apple.

At the end of the day, the initial high cost is just that. Also unlike the big
boys and third party developers, there is no need of SMAs or added costs to
keep up.

No, it is the apple gravy train at work with built in obsolescence as a
marketing approach.

Pushing bloatware out each year is no excuse and no favor for the end

Hello tim:
when I'm in the disk utility, here is what I have exactly.
outside the table, it says, selected disks row 2 or 3, disk 0 selected.
when I interact with the table, I can see the disk 0 and mac os bass
system, but the 1st item I can not access it, it says, space, and when
I close the table, I can access the number 2 and 3 in the list.
so, does the 1st item in the table is my NTFS SSD? and if so, how can
I access it?
the mac refuse to make me eraise or particion it.
Thanks

Rubbish, it is Samsung which has the reputation for seldom upgrading existing
OS on mobile phones which are already in the market. Apple supports upgrades
for several years, and does not charge for the upgrades. If you do not want the
latest software, do not install it. And yes, the latest software, on any
system, is built to access and run on the latest hardware.

Well, using Linux in the console, if you can get used to it, is very
accessible, but not moddern enough to be very productive in today's social
media stuff. Yes, the Mac accessibility is usable, but for how much longer? How
much more will it degrade? That's what I worry about.

Re: Apple kills my little mini with Sierra

2016-09-28 Thread Devin Prater
And unlike the big boys, you cannot improve Voiceover yourself. If something
doesn't work, sorry. Beg the developer to fix it, or find some other program
that works but may not work as well, such as Parallels, we must use VMWare.
Also, if you need better braille support, you have to fiddle around and try and
get BRLTTY to work, and even then it's just for the terminal. All in all,
openness has pretty big advantages.

It's like iPhones. When the 4 and 4s were getting upgrades, you'd hear the

get the latest OS, and how terrible is it that Apple is abandoning their

Apple gave old phones an upgrade the next year, people would complain
about the stuttering animations, the missing features, the slow response

about money-grubbing and not being responsible for their customers, or
they can support old machines and get hammered about poor performance and
 not supporting new features.

Re: Installing SSD on my mac mini, the os can not read it

2016-09-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

If it was installed properly, you should only see a few items in the "Select a
Disk" table. Try formatting the first item in that list. Make sure that you
format it as MacOS Extended (Journaled). If that doesn't appear to work, you
may need to use the Partition tab instead. In the Partition tab, choose that
you wish to create one partition, MacOS Extended (Journaled) and that should
get rid of the NTFS stuff.

Re: Changed VO behaviour under Sierra with ReadKit

I was optimistic that I would get this solved. However, it is not happening as

Hi everyone, the RSS reader ReadKit is one of my favourite MacOS apps.
Since upgrading to Sierra, VO has changed the way it speaks in the list of

of the article first, which is more verbiage to have to listen to before
getting to the headline.
Have had a pretty good play with both ReadKit and VO settings but can't find a
way to change it back.
Has anyone else seen this and found a way around it?

Re: Mc Os 10.12 questions.

2016-09-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey guys. I got a reply back from Apple Accessibility. So they say that if
Voiceover crashes while using Alex, they want you to do something called a
SysDiagnose command by pressing Control+Option+Command+Shift+Period and send
them the logs as attachments. I'll do that when I feel like crashing my
computer which should be fun lol. *:P

says “emergency by pass” If you check it, then when do not disturb is on,

No, it is the apple gravy train at work with built in obsolescence as a
marketing approach.

Pushing bloatware out each year is no excuse and no favor for the end
user.

Yes, they can disable certain parts, like Airdrop on non-BT4.x machines, but
eventually they'd be disabling more than they'd leave.

It's like iPhones. When the 4 and 4s were getting upgrades, you'd hear the same

latest OS, and how terrible is it that Apple is abandoning their customers, and
on and on. (I'm not accusing you of saying that.) Then, if Apple gave old
phones an upgrade the next year, people would complain about the stuttering
animations, the missing features, the slow response times, and so on. Apple can
either cut off old machines and get hammered about money-grubbing and not being
responsible for their customers, or they can support old machines and get
hammered about poor performance and not supporting new features.

Apple's gravy train and spend some cash in their direction. Not a chance Mr

I often hear the argument that Apple only use the very best components in
their devices. Very good, but what is the point if the device has to go on
the scrap heap half a century before the components might even consider
giving up the ghost. Not a lot in my humble opinion. So much for
conservation and getting the best out of limited resources.

Wow! Grumpy indeed. I am always in the notion that Apple never “forces” users
anything down their throats, upgrading to Sierra being one of them. It’s not
even in Software Update; you have to grab it from the Mac App Store yourself.
It isn’t just thrown at you like the other boys tried, at their very best I
must say, when they pushed users running Windows 7 or 8.1 to 10. Of course,
that isn’t happening now the free offer has expired, but you get the idea. Just
my £0.02 worth and will get out of my soapbox before I say anything I will
later regret.

Well, here is a strange one for you, I switched to Tom, after
downloading the voice and it started for like 2 to 4 seconds and then it
went back to alex what in the world?

What is strange is that alex works fine ifif i am using the mac but it is
after i leave for a bit that it does not work, so that is strange to boot.

Are you using Alex by any chance? If you recall my last message about this

the 2010's do and I really hope Apple fixes this right away. In the meantime,
use one of the Nuance voices if you have them. They never crash Voiceover and
if you don't have one and need help installing one I can guide you through how
to do it.

Re: Hello Anne

2016-09-28 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Martin,

The release of Sierra has not rendered your Mini obsolete, thus also has not
forced you to throw away a perfectly good machine, nor does it force your hand
into purchasing a new computer. That Mini works very well with El Capitan and
will likely continue working well for quite a while. You mentioned that you
have 4 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HD in your Mini, which is fine, but even if you
have 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB SSD, there are many other factors that come into play
including the processor, Cache speed, memory speed, video memory, the number of
processors etc, which all together determine whether a system can work on any
given machine. In the past, I have forced a new MacOS onto an older machine
and the results were obvious. Yes, it worked, but it was brutal to operate.
So very slow, especially with VO and speech. Almost painful. I totally
disagree with your suggestion of purchasing the lowest end Mac as opposed to
beefing it up a little. As the feature set grows, your system is taxed
further, thus having a few components that are beyond minimum will allow your
experience to be richer, longer.

Just my thoughts.

Have a good one.

Later...

The thing that annoys me is, that Apple have decided to not even give me the
opportunity to try the new operating system for myself. Yes, it might well
have been slower than on the latest and greatest. And, yes I might have had
to go back to El Capitan because of that. Nevertheless, I do not like the
decision taken out of my own hands by others.

As I have said, El Capitan is fine. I am now old enough to have convinced my
ego that contentment is not to be found in the latest offering from the boys
in Silicone Valley. It was my intention to purchase something more portable,
such as the Mac Book Air, in the early part of 2017. However, I shall
instead go down the Ultra Book road running Windows 10. I can buy the said
machine with a good speck of 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD drive for a lot
less than anything on offer from Apple. OK, the components may not be the
best that money can buy, but do they have to be in the throw-away world of
today.

The advice I would offer to anyone buying a Mac is quite simply this,
purchase the lowest, and thus the cheapest, speck that you can get away with
for your needs. Don't even consider extra RAM or more hard disc space in the
hope of prolonging the lifetime of your investment. I understand, but do not
agree with, the market forces that guide a lot of decisions being made by
manufacturers which are not in the best interest of consumers. Having been
given the operating system free of charge might not be such a good idea
after all. But, then I never thought it was because in such offerings there
is always a hidden cost.
Take care Anne.

Hello Anne

2016-09-28 Thread Martin Brown
Yes Anne, I can live quite well with El Capitan. I think the only thing in
Sierra that would have been useful was the removal of the focus bug along
with a few others. Not a show stopper however.

You're not considering the resource needs of the OS itself. New operating
systems have animations, background tasks, throughput needs, and other
requirements that must be met or the OS will run slowly and poorly. Apple has
to decide where those problems become so great that the OS would not be usable.
Yes, they can disable certain parts, like Airdrop on non-BT4.x machines, but
eventually they'd be disabling more than they'd leave.

It's like iPhones. When the 4 and 4s were getting upgrades, you'd hear the
same thing every year. People would scream about how their phone didn't get the
latest OS, and how terrible is it that Apple is abandoning their customers, and

Hi. May the processor can’t handle the latest OS. Unfortunately there seems
to be a cut off point with hardware regardless of the OS in question. It is
the same with phones. You probably wouldn’t be able to run the latest
Android 7 on a 2011 phone like the Samsung Galaxy S2. In my opinion,
Devices now need to be updated every 2 to 3 years and that can be harsh on
someone who may only have a small budget at their disposal.

Downgrading to El Capitan

2016-09-28 Thread Andrew Lamanche
Hi Listers,

Is it at all possible to downgrade from OS Sierra to El Capitan again? If yes,
would it require a clean install of El Capitan and thus loss of all the data?
Although my late 2010 Macbook air is listed by Apple as being capable of
running Sierra, I wonder whether it is too much to ask of it. It may be just
on the border, and If I were not to be able to use Alex on it because of the
crashes, I'd be inconsolable. No other voice seems to come up to scratch. And
other voices seem to be more sluggish as well as interpret things somewhat
differently.

If a clean installation of El Capitan were to be necessary, I have instructions
on how to create a bootable El Capitan usb drive. The only question mark I
have is - as you restart your mac with the option key depressed in order to get
a list of available booting disks - how can I choose the usb drive reliably?
It's a matter of moving the right or left arrow key once to select a different
disk to start from but I can't remember which way I need to move the cursor.
Any ideas?

Andrew

Re: Apple kills my little mini with Sierra

2016-09-28 Thread Saqib Hussain
Hi. May the processor can’t handle the latest OS. Unfortunately there seems to
be a cut off point with hardware regardless of the OS in question. It is the
same with phones. You probably wouldn’t be able to run the latest Android 7 on
a 2011 phone like the Samsung Galaxy S2. In my opinion, Devices now need to be
updated every 2 to 3 years and that can be harsh on someone who may only have a
small budget at their disposal.

When the 4 and 4s were getting upgrades, you'd hear the same
thing every year. People would scream about how their phone didn't get the
latest OS, and how terrible is it that Apple is abandoning their customers, and

I often hear the argument that Apple only use the very best components in
their devices. Very good, but what is the point if the device has to go on
the scrap heap half a century before the components might even consider
giving up the ghost. Not a lot in my humble opinion. So much for
conservation and getting the best out of limited resources.

Hello Martin,

Is there anything in Sierra that you don’t want to live without, or are you
quite happy with El Capitan?
I’m quite sure that my MacBook Air will take Sierra with ease, but for the time
being, I’m not going to bother because I don’t need all the bells and whistles.
I have installed Sierra on our machine we use for teaching as any mew Mac users
we train will have machines running Sierra and we need to be familiar with it.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Apple kills my little mini with Sierra

2016-09-28 Thread Alex Hall
You're not considering the resource needs of the OS itself. New operating
systems have animations, background tasks, throughput needs, and other
requirements that must be met or the OS will run slowly and poorly. Apple has
to decide where those problems become so great that the OS would not be usable.
Yes, they can disable certain parts, like Airdrop on non-BT4.x machines, but
eventually they'd be disabling more than they'd leave.

It's like iPhones. When the 4 and 4s were getting upgrades, you'd hear the same
thing every year. People would scream about how their phone didn't get the
latest OS, and how terrible is it that Apple is abandoning their customers, and

Apple kills my little mini with Sierra

2016-09-28 Thread Martin Brown
I have tried to download Sierra using my 2009 Mac Mini, but was informed
that my device was not compatible. I am somewhat surprised at this because
my Mini has 4GB of ram and a 500GB hard drive.

I say somewhat surprised, but not totally. Perhaps Apple has applied the 7
year rule. Put simply the powers that be feel it is time for me to join
Apple's gravy train and spend some cash in their direction. Not a chance Mr
Cook. I shall run this little baby up to, and beyond, the point where my
smoke alarms start going off.

I often hear the argument that Apple only use the very best components in
their devices. Very good, but what is the point if the device has to go on
the scrap heap half a century before the components might even consider
giving up the ghost. Not a lot in my humble opinion. So much for
conservation and getting the best out of limited resources.
All the best from the last of the Neanderthals somewhere in the UK.

Re: Mc Os 10.12 questions.

2016-09-28 Thread christopher hallsworth
Nothing. Sounds like a serious bug with 2010 macs and agreed that everyone
owning such macs should let Apple Accessibility know right away. Ok, it’s old
hardware, but as you know with Apple, they have a history of supporting old
hardware much longer than the competitors. Look at the iPhone 4s for example.
Ok, it’s a different topic, but it’s only this year they stopped supporting the
4s, yet it’s been around since 2011. But you get the idea. I have a 2011 mac
and have no such problems, so it seems to be exclusive to 2010 macs.

Yeah, but that could be playing the contributing factor. I'm not totally
