Re: MI miles or kilometers
Eric, Yes, the kilometer is the measurement unit usedfor the roads system here. Primary and secondary state roads (usually two- or four-lanes) connecting the towns have hectometer markers; that's why you might find rural addresses given as "Carr. xyz, km. xy.z". If you see "interior" or "int.", it means the address is found off the main, on a branching road. By the way, gasoline is sold by the liter. Re: MI Updating an integer and/or character column
Seems like your column is declared as "logical" only allowing for 0 or 1 and True (T) and False (F) values; hence the F you get... Max Michael Goldberg wrote: Dear List, I'm having trouble updating an integer column in one of my MapInfo tables. I want to add a number 2 to a column titled LandUse. I go to Table Update Column, select the appropriate table and column. Then in the value section I put LandUse = 2. I don't get any results or error messages. The LandUse column appears just as before with a 0 in every field. I then converted the LandUse column to a character and tried to update the column that way. This time in Table Update Column in the value section I put LandUse = "2". This time MI updates the column with an "F". No matter what character I try to update the column with I get an F. A pair of special glasses makes you see each image with one eye only and there you go. MI ORACLE 8I spatial licensing
We have 8I spatial up and running. The software is great, but two projects have just bogged down on ORACLE licensing. These customers have large numbers of concurrent multi-server ORACLE licences. We need to add the spatial option for a small number of named users (operating in their own ORACLE instance) without impacting on other corporate arrangement. That appears to be very difficult. Triggering a whole of corporation licence re negotiation is a pretty big hurdle for a small project trying to get some runs on the board. I am not sure whether our current hick-ups are because spatial is a bit new for the Australian ORACLE office, or if we have fallen in a hole in the new licensing policy.. I would love to hear from MapInfo operators in other geographys (especially North America) who have worked through adding the spatial option to existing ORACLE licenses. MI Get the state of Mapinfo buttons From VB/C++
We are using MI from VB and VC++ (integrated mapping). We have created ToolBars in VC++ to implement most of the Mapinfo standard ButtonPads. We are now facing the following problem: how can we synchronise the state of our buttons (greyed , checkec/uncheched) with the state of Mapinfo buttons ? To illustrate our problems, one of the most difficult scenario we are facing is the following: the user must draw/modify objects in a layer he selects an object (with the 'Select' tool) , then push the 'Reshape' button. Mapinfo sets the 'Add node' button as selectable (it was greyed out before). The user then pushes the 'Add node' button to add extra node to the object. If he (by mistake) clicks outside the object with this 'Add node' tool, Mapinfo de-selects the edited object, set the tool as 'Select', then unchecked the 'Add node' and 'Reshape' buttons, and set them as not selectable. How VC++ can know that this happened ?? We have not found a way to query all the Mapinfo buttons to get their state, as it is possible for menus items. We would very much appreciate any idea on the subject Frédéric DENTRAYGUES -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

RE: MI miles and kilometres
An interesting addendum to the original question about whether miles or kilometers are used in Puerto Rico...the correct answer is...BOTH. Distances are always expressed in kilometers but speed limits are expressed in MPH. This was done after painful experience determined that many PR drivers were interpreting an 85 KMH (50 MPH) speed limit by the big numbers on their speedometers. RE: MI Simple 3D Map
Michael, From what you wrote I assume you are trying to create a 3D chloropleth map where each state is vertically displaced depending upon a value. If this is what you are looking for read on. 1. Because you are dealing with such a large area I would make sure you map is in a projection that will be easy to work in (not longitude/Latitude). I would recommend Universal Transverse Mercator (NAD 83) Zone 14 or 15. 2. If you wish to have Alaska and Hawaii in your 3D scene, physically move them closer. I know this will not be geographically correct but it will limit the size of the resulting grid. If they are not within the bounds of your analysis, delete them. 3. Next, choose Vertical Mapper Create Grid Region to Grid to convert the region file to a grid. Choose the column from which cells will obtain their value, in your case it will be the ordinal field. Choose a relatively small cell size like 5000 metres and choose OK. For better results use a smaller cells size. 4. Use GridView to render it in 3D. For better results create a drape file. MI - MI Best GIS for dollar - Mappoint?
Further to the discussion a few weeks ago regarding 'the best value for money GIS', I was wondering whether anyone had experience with Microsoft Mappoint? I know that this new software is probalby not going to do the levels of analysis that most 'hard core' GIS specialists require, but for a large company which is looking to give more users greater access to simple GIS mapping techniques, it may do the job. Improved links to other Office software has to be a plus, as does the cost. Also, does anyone know how this will/has affected Microsoft's aggreement with Mapinfo? MI Cities Revealed Images
We've recently purchased a pair of disks containing Cities Revealed images for our city. These are high-resolution, georeferenced, tiled aerial photographs. The viewer provided allows these to be exported as jpgs with the creation of a TAB file. However, the resulting jpg files are either of lower quality than the original or considerably larger. Is there any way to load the original images directly into MapInfo? MI RE: image registration
Thanks to all who responded to my problem in importing a .gif into MI. I've got the output required!! -Original Message- From: Waardenburg, Dennis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Tuesday, May 23, 2000 1:58 PM To: Swayze, Natalie: WPG Subject: image registration Natalie, Is your goal to display the GIF as a background under some other files, or do you want to digitize relevant features from the GIF into a new layer? If you want to show the image in the background of a map, just register it (using the instructions below) and open the other layers into the same map window. If you want to digitize features from it, register it, display it in its own map window, then create a new table in the same map window and trace the features you want onto the new layer. From the MI help files: What Does It Mean To Register A Raster Image? When you register a raster map image, you enter map coordinates (e.g. longitude/latitude degrees), and you indicate which locations on the raster image correspond to those coordinates. You must register each raster image before displaying the image in MapInfo, so that MapInfo can perform geographic calculations, such as distance and area calculations, when displaying the raster map. The first time you open a raster image file within MapInfo, MapInfo displays the Register Raster Image dialog. By completing this dialog, you tell MapInfo how to register the raster image. MapInfo stores the raster image's registration information in a table file for future re-use. The next time you run MapInfo, you can re-open the raster table without repeating the registration process. Thus, you only need to register each raster image once. If you have not yet displayed your raster image in MapInfo, perform the following steps to register the image: 1. Choose File Open Table. the Open Table dialog displays. 2. Choose Raster Images from the File Format drop-down list. MapInfo displays a list of raster image files. 3. Choose the raster image file you want to open, and choose Open. MapInfo displays the Image Registration dialog. A preview of the raster image appears in the lower half of the dialog. 4. Specify the image's map projection by choosing the Projection button and completing the Choose Projection dialog. If you created the raster image by scanning a paper map, the paper map may contain information about the map projection used. If you cannot determine the map's projection, use the default map projection (longitude/latitude). Choose OK. 5. Move the mouse cursor over the image preview in the lower half of the dialog, to a spot where you know the map coordinates (e.g. longitude/latitude), and click the mouse button. MapInfo displays the Add Control Point dialog. 6. Complete the Add Control Point dialog by entering the map coordinates that correspond to the location where you clicked on the map image. Choose OK. Remember that any location west of the Prime Meridian has a negative longitude, and any location south of the Equator has a negative latitude. Thus, 73 degrees West corresponds to the X value -73. If you are entering coordinates in degrees, you must enter decimal degrees as opposed to degrees/minutes/seconds. 7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until you have entered at least three control points. To ensure accurate results, enter five or six control points. Each control point that you add helps MapInfo associate earth coordinates with locations on the raster image. Ideally, you should have at least one control point at or near each corner of the image. The number of control points needed depends on the nature of your raster image. If you are not able to determine your map's projection, or if you are working with an image that does not have an actual map projection, such as an aerial photograph, you may want to enter twenty or more control points. 8. Choose OK when you are done adding control points. MapInfo displays the raster image in a Map window. When you complete the Image Registration dialog, MapInfo saves the registration information in a table (.tab) file. In later MapInfo sessions, you can re-open the table by choosing File Open Table, without repeating the registration process, and without having to choose Raster Images as the File Type in the Open Table dialog. Smoots and Boston geography (was: MI miles and kilometres)
It's well known that Boston has the weirdest geography (South Boston lies to the east, etc.), and that goes double for the lack of signs or signs deliberately worded to fool any but the beantown natives... there used to be a sign off the Southeast Distressway for the exit that takes you to the North End; it said: "No End". Right. Add that to the maniacal drivers who count coup (notice how many cars are dented in Boston)whizzing past you on a network of twisty, high speed roads rooted in 17th century cow paths, and it's pretty easy to find yourself on your way over the Mystic River bridge heading to Maine instead of the North End with signs like that. But scrod is pretty good; much better than it sounds. Much better than the Rocky Mountain oysters we serve up here. - Bill Tim Rood wrote: I haven't seen it, but my father, an MIT alum, said on the Beantown side of the bridge there's a sign (or was in the 40s) that says "___ to Hell." MI Capturing Customised Auto labels into a layer
Hi Listers, I have a series of maps which have customised labels built via MapInfo's Auto Label facillity. Some of these labels have been manually positioned - involving some effort! The underlying tables are very active and I need to pack them - which would destroy my labels. I need to create a label layer to replace the Auto Labels. Does anybody know of a way to capture the existing labels in bulk and paste them in to a new/existing layer? I will summarise. SUM MI Rotating a vector 90 degrees
I have had some responses that have directed me to the rotate and rotary mbx's but it seems that these are only really good for rotating single items. What I am trying to accomplish is rotating all of the regions around a point so that they look the same but in a landscape as opposed to portrait view, if you like. The co-ordinate system is non earth metres so there should not be any distortion of the vectors when this happens. I may be missing something with respect to rotary.mbx, as this one has more functionality and can rotate regions around a point, but I do not think it can do it for all of the region objects at once.
