You would hear that from a Benz mechanic as well.. most of them will tell you
the more complex and expensive a car is, the better chance of something going
wrong. Besides if you pay attention to the car requirements?for maintainence
(and each vehicle is different) it shouldn't break.

Anyone have an opinion on how long a differential in an '83 300D will
last
after it starts singing like an old Chevrolet differential?

Depends upon whether they bought to car to have a very good car or to
show how much money they can spend. The latter tend to be obnoxious,
