I saw this vid a few weeks back, maybe someone posted it here, or it was
on FB or something -- anyway, about 200 Amish guys get inside this
smallish house maybe 700-800sqft, I guess the flooring had been pulled
up, but they picked the whole thing up, rotated it, and walked it over
40 or 50ft to a new foundation and dropped it down.  There were a coupla
guys outside yelling instructions. It was crazy.

[MBZ] Compensating Spring Paint Marks

Here a guy says the head gaskets leak after the dealer fixes them, so it's up
to the driver to tear it apart, have the heads resurfaced, and put it back
together right.
The problem seems to be that four bolts aren't enough to secure a head on a 2L
turbo diesel cylinder, at least not one that you expect to stay together for
500,000 miles.

In case anybody is thinking of buying one, this is the prevailing line of

It was a bad engine. I don't think you can even get one any more in a truck.

It might have, I haven’t determined this.

However, the only compensators available are rebuilt ones for more than half
the cost of the car, and you have to provide the core for rebuilding.

Not an option I’m interested in pursuing.

Re: [MBZ] Something Kaleb needs ...

2019-01-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Once the trees get big like that if its densely forested you really don't have
to trim under them. Mine are getting to the point that the branches near the
ground just touch on trees 9 feet apart. Eventually some of them will be
trimmed up to 18', once the touching branches get above 6 feet I won't have to
mow anymore since there really won't be much light for anything to grow
underneath.I don't intend to trim them all but trees that are trimmed bring a
premium because you can get long, knot free, boards. We'll see how I feel, last
fall I trimmed a couple so I could keep lanes open, the deer have heavily
tracked where I trimmed so I guess thats a good thing.
9' is the common spacing for lumber trees, for pulpwood its 6' and you don't
have to trim.

I got an answer from one of my finnie forum buddies.

Seems that yellow paint was used on the production lines as an inspection mark,
so it can be ignored.

That means I have a red paint mark.

According to the service manual table for spring spacers, I need a 6mm for the
left (driver’s) side and a 3mm for the right.

There are only two spacers available for the compensating spring, 3mm and 6mm.

Problem solved!

Its pretty easy to do, buy a bottle jack, and 4x4.We bought tiles to replace

Her parents were very evasive about us doing it so one Sunday Angie took her
mom to church and I said "Hey Larry, I happen to have a jack in the truck, lets
level this floor.
Turns out the floor had been leveled with:1. A 4" ash tree that had splitandB.
A 2x4 that was bowed 4"
I replaced them with 3 steel leveling posts.
A guy gave me a 12 ton jack a few years ago, it made short work of the job. A 4
ton will work but the extra capacity means you don't have to work so hard...

Having seen the photos of the differential setup on the car, that was
sort of my thought as well. They are likely compensating for the offset
on the differential.
Another simpler answer might be that they thought the car might most
often be driven with only the driver on board and were compensating for
the additional weight on the driver's side.

While I understand that the MB book claims the marks are white, not yellow,
take a look at the underbody shot of this 1966 200D for sale in SF.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1966-mercedes-benz-200d-3/

It clearly has a YELLOW mark on the compensator spring. Might be worth calling
Tom Hanson, as the book clearly doesn't match reality in these two cases.

Or is it possible that the book is referring to the regular coil springs, NOT
the compensator spring?

They are probably mostly crap but the MB part is $273 off Amazon (but

quality issues.

The car has an aftermarket radio in it (very nice Alpine with Bluetooth)

Much agreed. Car parts are better than hang overs, STD, and a sore throat.

The parts collecting had an honest beginning. I would find good parts to
replace ugly, which became better, then trying to get best parts. Add low
grade cars in need of betterment, and the drive to upgrade …. grows until it
overcomes space available.

Maybe I should have invested in finding the best single malts instead.

[MBZ] Alternator opinion welcomed 350sdl

2019-01-15 Thread Patrick Atuonah via Mercedes
I have a 1991 350SDL chasis. OM 603.961 engone was transplanted.
No issues whatsoever.. until I got problem with battery.
Shop says alternator.. I got new battery and a week later battery died.
Took car to shop and a Reman OEM realternator installed at the dealer.
Alternator is not charging the battery so battery is dead all the time and
have to be jumped to start the car.

The Dealer diagnosed the issue to be ignition switch at a $700 cost of
replacement. I'm stuck with this bill.

How does an ignition switch affect the charging of the battery if
alternator goes bad?

The alternator was probably good if replacing it didn't fix anything.
The only thing worse than paying somebody who can't diagnose anything to
replace a good alternator would be to pay them to replace a good alternator and
a good ignition switch and still have a car that won't charge. I'm not saying
that's what will happen, but I don't have any confidence it won't.

If the glow plug relay is stuck on, that might use all the alternator has to
give.

Nope. they never were worth much.   A 110/111 with AC is not worth $1500
more air conditioned than without, so maybe I should sell my Kuhlmeister
AC as a complete system.  I think I paid $15 for the last compressor
bracket I bought.

How much is a new universal fitzall AC in the box?

Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote on 1/15/19 7:32 PM:

Curley hasn’t priced used FrigiKing or Behr AC systems for these cars lately, I
can tell. To gather all the parts that are in working order will set you back
$1500 or more. Then you have to get the system working.

Re: [MBZ] Alternator opinion welcomed 350sdl

2019-01-15 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Mitch may be onto the real reason.  Start the car, then unplug the
harness to the glowplugs at the relay.  Check charging voltage before
and after you unplug.   If the relay is bad, you will have probably 1
volt or more higher reading without the glow plug harness plugged in.
If the differential is 0.0 to 0.2 V then the relay is probably ok, or at
least it is not stuck at the moment.

The switch could be possible, but usually, the start contact goes out
first.   I have not studied the idiot light circuit in the SDL, but I do
believe it goes through the key switch.

The alternator has to get current to the field windings to make juice.
In most Bosch systems, this current is completed by the idiot light circuit.

Does the idiot light come on with switch on and engine off?

Does the idiot light go off when the engine is running? (key on)

I have looked online, as has my mechanic, and each site that seems to
indicate the parts are available, so far, have responded that they are
not available.  I checked with the Classic Center and was told they
are unavailable worldwide (in the MB family).  I have one e-mail out
waiting for a response, but I am not holding out hope.

Does anyone know of a source for these items?

Thanks in advance for any leads you might give me.

Curley hasn’t priced used FrigiKing or Behr AC systems for these cars lately, I
can tell. To gather all the parts that are in working order will set you back
$1500 or more. Then you have to get the system working.

Much agreed. Car parts are better than hang overs, STD, and a sore throat.

The parts collecting had an honest beginning. I would find good parts to

overcomes space available.

Maybe I should have invested in finding the best single malts instead.

I really am not sure and I have never ran into that issue. Testing the
alternator is pretty easy. Put a meter on it as see if it’s putting out about
13.3 or more volts at idle.

2019-01-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
The ignition switch (or a relay downstream) has to provide field current to
make the alternator charge. It seems unlikely to me that the switch would be
the problem though, seems like other stuff wouldn't work if the switch was bad,
stuff like the lights and radio...

I am guessing if the lawyer lady has clients in AK, she is probably
in/near anchorage.  Or maybe Juneau.   There oughta be some wimmins in

considerable abundance of call girls he could chase.

[MBZ] Buying a battery for a diesel

2019-01-15 Thread Craig via Mercedes
The battery in the 1993 E300D I just bought is definitely bad and needs to
be replaced.

I have looked around and the lowest price I see is about $120 for a Group
49/H8.

I thought of getting a comparably-rated Group 31 heavy truck battery from
our local Kenworth dealer for $79.99 and then changing the screw
terminals to posts with adapters like the attached picture shows. Yes, I
have checked to see if it would fit! And, yes, I have asked if they would
take a Group 49 as a core.

What do you all think about this approach?

Go for it. There's nothing magic about batteries, as long as you get the
correct voltage and enough cranking amps. You can make a new box to hold it
if you need to.
