These search the national motor vehicle title database.

Has anyone used these yet? I'm curious how thorough the history is on

In particular the first one does not seem to suffer from the pre-1981

If you just want to check if a vehicle has been reported stolen or

However, I think one major problem with starting came from having very
little to no oil in the crankcase. I don't know if the leak was faster than
I thought, or if there wasn't much oil in there when I bought the car, but
there was not enough in there on Saturday to wet the dipstick. Added a

Black oil is normal, it'll look like that about 10 minutes after an oil
change.

Black fuel isn't normal. Get some biocide at a marine good store (West
Marine) and get several sets of filters from Rusty (two or three big
filters, four or six inline filters). Carry the tools to change both in
the car, as well as some filters.

Reminds me that I need to check my inline filter, I just changed it and
treated the fuel because the filter was filling up with brown sludgy
stuff.

If the transmission is shifting fine, and the fluid doesn't smell
burned, I think that you won't find anything too bad when you finally do
it. Be warned that the screws holding the pan to the tranny are very
low torque (7 or 8 ft lbs) and exceeding that will warp the pan and
cause leaks.

[MBZ] Outside Lower Door Panels W124

2010-04-15 Thread LarryT

Howdy -
Our '91 300D (W124) has plastic (?) exterior door panels which do an amazing
job at fending off rust and dents/dings.

I have a small spot of rust just above one of the panels (the panel on the L
rear door) and don't want to break anything removing the panel. I need to
take the panel off to make sure I get all the rust.

The WSM doesn't do a good job describing the removal of the panels. There
are screws at the front and rear of the door and I *think* the center part
of the panel snaps onto plastic things on the door. I'd like to buy some
new plastic keepers in case I break one or more of them.

Anyone know how to remove those panels? Is it likely I'll break the
holders? I'm off to look at the parts diagram will hopefully find pn's.

Thanks!

By fending off, do you mean encouraging?

I've never had a (post-'91?) 124 with the plastic door cladding, but

I have a small spot of rust just above one of the panels (the panel on
the L rear door) and don't want to break anything removing the panel.
I need to take the panel off to make sure I get all the rust.

The WSM doesn't do a good job describing the removal of the panels.
There are screws at the front and rear of the door and I *think* the
center part of the panel snaps onto plastic things on the door. I'd
like to buy some new plastic keepers in case I break one or more of them.

Anyone know how to remove those panels? Is it likely I'll break the
holders? I'm off to look at the parts diagram will hopefully find
pn's.

Thanks!

You might want to take off the inner door panel and look to see how it is

2010-04-15 Thread Rich Thomas
I took off the rear door panels on the 300SD to fix the window slider,
and noticed the attachment thingies there for the cladding/trim, they
look like they are those plastic rivet kind of things that sorta pop out
when you push/pull on them, and lock into place. I had this vague
fleeting thought that if I ever had to take that stuff off it might be
easier to pop them out from the inside, but I did not look at them in
detail.

[MBZ] Back to vacuum lines!

2010-04-15 Thread Chris N John
Hello helpers! You responded some time ago with diagrams and information
about what vac lines (colors) were for and we tried changing the loose
hanging ones coming out of the firewall in the engine compartment to see
if it would fix some of our problems: The climate control only works on
defrost. The cruise controls doesn't work. Anyway, the fix didn't help
and the car would not turn off with the key. (Had to use the red stop
lever under the hood) So we put it back where it was again. Does anyone
have a 1980 300 sd they could take some pics of so we can compare? Ours
has been changed so much, prior to our ownership that we are really
confused!! Don't even know if the check valves are turned the right way.
And again the unconnected green and yellow lines need proper
connections. Just don't know where! I think if we can get it right, we
can then test and find out if some other repairs need to be done. There
is some kind of a ?cutout switch? mounted close by on the firewall that
seems to be a safety for the turbo or transmission or something. It
appears not to work as it should. Also the tac doesn't work, only once
in awhile when it goes crazy and flops around like its possessed. Lots
of issues, but we love our car!! Thanks again for help and suggestions.
Would really appreciate some photos! Chris

I did have a leaky fuel line between the tank and first filter that needed
replaced. That was done a week ago or so.

However, I think one major problem with starting came from having very
little to no oil in the crankcase. I don't know if the leak was faster than
I thought, or if there wasn't much oil in there when I bought the car, but
there was not enough in there on Saturday to wet the dipstick. Added a
little over a gallon of Rotella and now there is *black* oil on the
dipstick. She's been starting a little better ever since.

[MBZ] Fwd: Multi-State Record Reports

2010-04-15 Thread Tim C
Result from add123 on my '77 300D.

Those are probably correct title transfers, based on the oral history of the
car: 1997 for the fellow's estate to his daughter, and then 2009 for me.
Don't know if the original registration didn't make it or was in a
non-reporting state.

Unknown must correspond to 'Odometer reading incorrect' on the title. The
original odo was replaced at some point so I still don't know the actual
mileage even +/- 100k, I was kind of hoping this would give me a clue.

2010-04-15 Thread Dieselhead
But if you have not changed the oil, that should be a priority.
Fortunately, it is something you can do yourself, either by draining,
or by using a Wilton special oil sucker. When you send in a parts
order to Rusty, add an oil filter. If you are in a bind, and have to
get one locally, find a Wix. Don't buy the Mcparts regulars: fram,
autolite, STP etc. Best is to always have spare fuel and oil filters
from Rusty on hand.

Re: [MBZ] Back to vacuum lines!

2010-04-15 Thread Dieselhead
There is a problem. The 1980 300SD, I believe is a 116, not a 126
chassis. Chuck Landenberger used to have a 116 SD. Maybe someone on
the list does.

The vacuum diagrams should be somewhat similar to a 126, but may be
different, especially under the dash. A 1980 Sd would have the
Crypsler ACC servo. I am not sure if it has the vacuum valve/switch
array for the flaps as a 126 does.

I could get some pics of the 84 SD tonight, I presume things should be
fairly similar. Do you have the 126 repair CDs? That has some

The WSM doesn't do a good job describing the removal of the panels.
There are screws at the front and rear of the door and I *think* the

Anyone know how to remove those panels? Is it likely I'll break the

[MBZ] Won One: 107 visor tab

2010-04-15 Thread Dieselhead
I was able to repair the visor tab on the 107. I glued the three
pieces together with shoo goo. When it was half dry, I wrapped the
whole thing with a strip of Aluminum from a pop can bedded in shoo
goo. After the whole mess dried, I got some micro drills at HF and
iced a 0.5 mm drill to make 6 small holes that I used to wrap copper
wire around portions to hold the whole thing together.

While most US drill chucks won't hold a drill under 1/16 inch
(0.0625) I found the HF cordless drill would hold the 0.5 mm (0.02)
drill. I was impressed as the drill and flashlight cost only $19! I
took a chunk of # 12 TTHN wire , then pulled a strand out of it and
threaded it though the holes, and pulled it and tied the wire off.

The result is not pretty, but it works. I attached a picture taken
with a webcam. Not the quality of hursty's watch pictures, but I
don't have his equipment either.

Reminds me that I need to check my inline filter, I just changed it and
treated the fuel because the filter was filling up with brown sludgy
stuff.

Rarely, unless you have bad fuel or a bug infection. In the latter
case,

I think three or four of each is conservative.

Well, if I'm seeing what I'm supposed to be seeing, the fuel looks
almost as black as the oil. So . that's most likely extremely bad.

I'd seek the list wisdom on this sequencing. Seems like maladjusted
valves could cause more damage than bad motor mounts? And similarly
transmission fluid/filter, unless you are sure this thing was
well-maintained up to parking. Turn signal I would do last, of
course, if the lamp is still there, not least because one might turn
up on ebay for cheap.

You should also do bearings I believe, if you don't have maintenance
history. I haven't done mine yet but I think they are due every 15k.
Similarly rear differential but they may do that with your

transmission.

Actually, I'm pretty sure well maintained has never entered the same
sentence as Ol' Frau. She's been driven pretty hard from what I can see.
I'm not an expert, yet, but I just have a feeling that this is the case.
I did read in the owner's manual that the transmission needs serviced
and a new filter *every 30,000* and the odometer, which is exempted
because it's already so high, is at 319,000 and change. I'm very, very
afraid to see what the transmission filter looks like.

Car was very hard to start again this morning. Fearing for this

winter.

Valves, glow plugs, fuel leakdown, poor fuel flow, or something more
serious. Since you may be dealing with poor flow already (critters,
air leak, or tuning) I'd say deal with that and worry about the slow
start later, worst case you're cutting a little off the lifetime of
the battery if it turns out you have a shorted glow plug or something.

You've got a long time until winter. :)

The glow plugs are brand new. Just had them put in a couple of weeks
ago.
The oil is Rolls Royce Sapphire Black, the fuel not far from it. The
engine is pretty black too, from the leak. So I'm not even sure if the
valve cover is the only leak.

They are expensive at first, aren't they? I always forget that part.

Enjoy,
-Tim

They are expensive if the PO didn't care about them, as it seems is my
case.
But I still feel I got a good deal, so I'm still working it from that
angle.

For the newly-initiated-into-diesels, the oil turns pitch black almost

Re: [MBZ] Won One: 107 visor tab

2010-04-15 Thread Dieselhead
nope. too small and it is plastic. To be real the aluminum should
have come from a beer can, not a pop can. Since they don't put good
beer in cans, I don't have any beer cans. Actually, it was not a pop
can, but a club soda can. No HFCS in that!

What, no old microwave sheet metal welded in there somewhere?

I was able to repair the visor tab on the 107. I glued the three
pieces together with shoo goo. When it was half dry, I wrapped the
whole thing with a strip of Aluminum from a pop can bedded in shoo
goo. After the whole mess dried, I got some micro drills at HF and
iced a 0.5 mm drill to make 6 small holes that I used to wrap
copper wire around portions to hold the whole thing together.

While most US drill chucks won't hold a drill under 1/16 inch
(0.0625) I found the HF cordless drill would hold the 0.5 mm (0.02)
drill. I was impressed as the drill and flashlight cost only $19!
I took a chunk of # 12 TTHN wire , then pulled a strand out of it
and threaded it though the holes, and pulled it and tied the wire
off.

The result is not pretty, but it works. I attached a picture taken
with a webcam. Not the quality of hursty's watch pictures, but I
don't have his equipment either.

one piece of wire is crossways in the middle to pull the aluminum
down and make the cross section thinner there. That does not show in

2010-04-15 Thread LarryT

Thanks Kaleb --
Exactly what I needed to know - I'll remove the 2 screws and use a nylon pry
to pop it off.

BTW - did you ever find a drivers seat belt for my 91 300D? Ours works, but
the handle that plugs into the receiver next to the seat is partly broken.

Thanks again -

Howdy -
Our '91 300D (W124) has plastic (?) exterior door panels which do an
amazing job at fending off rust and dents/dings.

I have a small spot of rust just above one of the panels (the panel on
the L rear door) and don't want to break anything removing the panel. I
need to take the panel off to make sure I get all the rust.

The WSM doesn't do a good job describing the removal of the panels.
There are screws at the front and rear of the door and I *think* the
center part of the panel snaps onto plastic things on the door. I'd like
to buy some new plastic keepers in case I break one or more of them.

Anyone know how to remove those panels? Is it likely I'll break the
holders? I'm off to look at the parts diagram will hopefully find
pn's.

Thanks!

[MBZ] Vac lines w-116

We have the service manual CD for the W-116. It is some help except it
seems there are some variables. Can't decide which way ours should go
from the pictures and diagrams.

Thought real pics of the same car might be better

Re: [MBZ] Vac lines w-116

2010-04-15 Thread Jim Cathey

I suspect that a same-vintage 107 or 114/123 would work just
about as well. It's not rocket science, the check valves go
in only one way, and the yellow lines should end up together
on one side of one valve, such that the reservoir is coupled
to the door lock system. Everything else coupled upstream
of that. Not sure where the second valve goes, nor whether
or not the cruise actuator needs access to the vacuum reservoir
too.
