The difficulty is apparently in lining up the balancer, as discussed in the
following thread over on the peachparts forum:

On the M103 and OM603 the hub is separate from the balancer -- I
don't think, upon reflection, that this is true of the OM61x
engines. Don't remember what we did on the 75 300D when we found out
we had omitted the "space" the front seal rides on -- it was missing
from the engine when we go

Another thought is a high wattage (50 or so), but low color temp(4100K) HID
kit.
Properly installed, they can match the color and beam pattern of a regular
lamp and not make you look like a honda civic from some ricer movie.

We welded a bar to the old balancer. Run it around so that it hits
the floor and crank away. Works in either direction with some
jiggling, although better on the 603 and M103 engines.
Volvo has a tool that counterholds the crank, we made one from scrap.

few years back when their 245 wagon hit 275,000 miles. Had it less
than a year and got rid of it, it was in the shop almost as much as
they drove it.
I beg to differ on the I5 which has been in the volvo 850 from the begining
- and is a magnificient and efficient engine, and of course carried over to
the S&V70s.
Talk about an easy engine to work on - and it is BULLET PROOF.

Laserdisc was still using analog for video; apparently one place it really
shows is the part of 2001 where he goes into the monolith (at the end); DVD
simply cannot replicate it.
