Re: [MBZ] Poll: How much power is too much?
Couple of differences from the Cummins. Top end there is like 2800 rpm and the turbo is optimized for torque. Pretty sure you are rocking 600-plus foot pounds of torque on that motor from 1200rpm or so. So the power and torque is always there, more or less, throughout the rpm range, probably with a vnt, and power does not increase dramatically with rpm. The om606 has a 5500 red line (or so). Often the turbo will not boost until 3k (eg host hx40). So you get great economy off boost, but when you cane it, all hell breaks loose. I plan to engineer around this to some degree, but still. Maybe I will go hx35 instead, or compound. > > Thanks. > > On Jan 4, 2016 10:38 AM, "Curt Raymond via Mercedes" < mercedes@okiebenz.com> wrote: >> >> Sensible upper limit? Re: [MBZ] Shop heaters
That's was a great show. Speaking of sitcoms, does anyone know the name of a sitcom w/o laugh track or live audience that features a Tennessee (or other southern?) nuclear family? In the episode I saw the Dad was whipping up the wife and kids for a competition against a mortal enemy family who won the annual competition (in events such as three legged race) the previous year. I just about split a gut laughing, but forgot the name of the show or the time slot. Re: [MBZ] Poll: How much power is too much?
It all depends on the weight of the vehicle, and the temperament/style of the driver. 100HP is enough for my wife in most anything. 400HP is the minimum for Regina (as I hear it). Actually, the more aggressive or on/off the driver, the less power they should have under their right foot. All that having been said, I fdon';t think there is such a thing as too much power - just use what you need at the time. Re: [MBZ] Poll: How much power is too much?
Depends. With all of the available technology in a modern MB (4matic, ABS, traction control, skid control, etc.) unlimited HP. Realistically, 400 HP, 500 lb.feet would be the upper limit, I would guess, and that in a heavy vehicle with abs and limited slip (ASR?, ASD?) (don't know all the acronyms). That would be a brutally quick car, with the ability to smoke the tires at any reasonable speed by simply mashing the go pedal. Fun to drive, but probably scary for SWMBO. It was still pretty good at passing speeds but a bit slower from starting up from a dead stop. The efficiency of the newer engines (and transmissions) means that the fuel economy on the newer truck is better than the older truck even though the newer one has more power. I am not sure what the fuel economy might be if I used the additional power all the time but since I do not, it is not material. I guess the traction control is a good thing. I can turn it off if I don't want it. It should keep one from getting in trouble in some cases but it also means that one cannot goose the throttle and kick the back end around like we used to do on older vehicles. If I do that, it hesitates and that is a bit of an odd feeling when one is trying to make a quick left with traffic coming. One tries to do it quickly and get out of the way and the truck thinks it is spinning and tries to prevent it. Wierd if one is used to doing it the old way. I used to go out with my old 1968 Chevy 2WD pickup and play in the fresh snow. It was fun to slide the rear around. [MBZ] It fell off
Go fast pedal fell off Froggy, as I mentioned last week. Airmatic pooped out on the W220. Fresh pump went in at the indy, but same errors, so off to the dealer for diagnosis, which came back as failed sensor on passenger side and rear. Stealership will give me 10% MBCA discount and do work Wednesday. Go fast pedal issue on Froggy went to the indy to see if he was able to fix, as I had been warned not to mess with the car by myself, because he was no longer going to defornicate my "repairs". Turned out indy was not able to effectuate repairs due to rusting off of metal tongue that holds the base of the pedal to the floor. I was advised to contact a body shop to have repair to rusty floor area done. I know a good shop, just expensive, and the job is a bit small for them. I got Froggy back home, out of the rain, and took a bigger look at the pedal and floor. I cut some nice steel to make a flange and base L. The go pedal had failed historically, based on the set of screws holding the metal tab in the base of the pedal, instead of there being a plastic plug. This will make installation hard, but I can machine out a spot in the new base. Guess I will need to visit PnP to get a new clip/retainer/plug. I pulled up the carpet and sound proofing to get a better look at the flooring. Some prior work was done. Looks like another person had faked up a pedal base and attached it in place of the original. That bit of metal is what rusted away. There is a sandwich of metal I now need to figure out if I chisel it off and clean up the flooring, or just weld my solution on top. My POR 15 job on the floor is holding up well, with minimal rust coming through. I was pretty sure I had taken that down to metal when I painted the product on. Guess not as much as I had thought. Ice pick will come out to probe the depth of that problem. No rust through from the underside. May be that the undercoating it holding the floor together? At the moment I am baking the metal L base/flange after giving it some rust proof paint, then a good base primer, and a few coats of 040 black to protect the thing from rust. That should do well enough to out survive me. Shoe goo will no doubt hold the whole thing to the floor. Re: [MBZ] Poll: How much power is too much?
Randy is right, my truck is a gasser. I think you'll find that diesel engines get worse fuel economy off boost. My '98 Jetta gets on boost around 1200rpm which makes me think something is wrong with my '05 Golf that rockets off at 2200. If you're not making boost until 3k something is wrong with the turbo or the wastegate. Remember you asked how much power do you NEED not how much you might want. I'm sticking by my answer, especially if the electronic nanny controls are no present. Not having traction control my '96 Dakota 5.2l, 205hp was a real handful in any slippery spots. My 2010 Dodge 1500 has excellent traction control and the 345hp is easy to handle and excellent even in the snow, even in 2wd. I'm in favor of the idea of a graduated drivers licensing system where a higher level of training (and the requisite testing) allows you to have a more powerful vehicle. Most people should probably be limited to sub 100hp levels... -Curt From: Karl Wittnebel via MercedesTo: "mercedes@okiebenz com" Cc: Karl Wittnebel Sent: Monday, January 4, 2016 2:25 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] Poll: How much power is too much? Re: [MBZ] More shop heater
Buy one outright, it will be cheaper in the long run. We bought the tank that was at the house we built down here, and we saved a bundle over time. The lease thing is a screw and also prevents you from buying fuel from another supplier. That was one of the things that helped pay for our tank - I called around and got the best price when it needed to be filled. I just checked a few suppliers online and a 250 gallon above ground tank can be had for between $500 and $800. You can buy smaller tanks yourself - my local Ace has tanks up to 100 lbs., which are around $125.00, I believe. I looked at buying one for our outdoor oven, but I don’t have a way to transport it to be filled. Dan > On Jan 4, 2016, at 7:02 PM, Kaleb C. There are only two suppliers in the Tampa area that I know of, Hillsboro Gas and TECO, our electrical utility. When we moved into this house there was a TECO branded tank on the side of the house that fed the outdoor oven. I called TECO to see what would be involved in getting it filled. They wanted over $200 just to come out and inspect/leak test the tank. I read the certification serial number and date to them over the phone, as it was still good. They wanted nothing of this, they refused to fill the tank unless I paid them to do what I did and nothing more (understand that this has nothing to do with anything but the tank itself, no regulator, no lines, nada.) I hung up on them and went to my local ACE Hardware, who had portable tanks up to 100 pounds. I bought a 40 pound tank, which cost me like $65, and I take it to them to fill it. Costs me $32 the last time I filled it, and it usually lasts anywhere from 7-8 months. I would have gotten a larger tank but I don’t have a way to transport a larger one upright, which is a requirement for transporting them. The tank discharges gas, which means it gets cold from liquid boiling off inside it when the furnace runs. Maybe that’s why it’s abandoned? Raw natural gas, which is mostly methane, I believe, is not the best stuff to be using for heating. It’s really low in BTU content and has a lot of moisture in it, which means it needs to be dried out before use. Dan > On Jan 4, 2016, at 9:20 AM, Kaleb C.
