Ahh. Right.

But it would sure be easy to put a turbo motor in there since it
is already a OM617. Motor mounts, flywheel, driveshaft are all
correct.

If it were a _S_123 I don't think I should get another
W123. Especially since I just spent a chunk getting a sturdy
transmission for one of my diesel Suburbans.

Internal to the PBU, I have nestled a red and a blue LED behind two of the
switches. The red LED is behind the DEF button, and is wired so that it
turns on when the monovalve is activated. The blue LED is behind the NORM
button, and is wires so that it turns on when the Klima is actuated. I did
this in particular so that I could tell if it was the monovalve or the PBU
at fault when I wasn't getting heat. The blue LED will show the AC
compressor cycling.

And the trunk badges are gone.
IIRC, Marshall used to say that MBZ never made a manual transmission 617.95x,
because it would lose boost at every shift. A guy who converted a 300SD to
manual told me that it's slow off the line until it starts making boost, but
running through the gears is no problem.

Re: [MBZ] And the blaming begins

2017-10-30 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I’m not taking sides or defending either party here, but from personal
experience….

I believe that car is equipped with parametric steering. If the solenoid in
the steering gear sticks, and when it does it’s typically at low speeds, the
steering returns to its normal (less assist) mode. My experience with this in
the W140 caused the steering to “judder” as it jumped from one mode to the
other. It was a great enough concern for me that I spent about 30 minutes
talking to the guys who are the absolute masters at rebuilding MB steering
gears out in Vegas. They confirmed what was going on and told me to just
disconnect the solenoid.

The story is the steering stuck and she was correcting and as she did the truck
passed her and the right front caught the truck. That story does not seem to
make any sense. She must have been in the left lane getting passed on the
right. But the impact to me looks like that consistent with plowing into a
vehicle that slowed down or stopped. If she supposedly turned into the vehicle
that was passing seems the damage would have been quite different. Maybe I am
understanding it wrong.

Re: [MBZ] OT: CPAP nasal pillows

2017-10-30 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I have been trying one out for a couple of nights. It makes me sore. I like
that it is compact (for travel) but I think it's going back in favor of a full
mask.

Subject: [MBZ] OT: CPAP nasal pillows

So I got a Fisher and Paykel Brevida last Friday after the talk here about
nasal pillows when Kleb got his CPAP. Told my DME rep that I wanted something
small in hopes it wouldn't dislodge as easily in the night, and that's what she
gave me.
The display mask fit great, I wore it for about 5-10 minutes while we talked
and she got a new one for me. Unfortunately, she fitted the display mask to me,
not the one she sent home with me, so I had to read the instructions and try to
get it to fit. The instructions said to wear it loosely, but the headgear has
two straps about an inch apart and it's not very secure, especially when loose.

Finally used it last night, tightened the headgear one notch at a time until it
quit leaking, but still woke up a couple of times with it leaking and had to
reposition it.
Nostrils were slightly sore when I woke up but the feeling went away within and
hour. I'm sure I didn't have it too tight, but it might have been too loose.

Should I give my nostrils a rest tonight, or wear the pillows mask again?

Mitch.

Yeah come get this diesel, you can deal with the glow plugs or whatever
is throwing the codes.  Put that valance on it and it will be a nice
looking car, should run OK after you deal with those code issues.

I bought it for $500, bought a few bits for it, new wheel/tire, rear
light, coupla other things, need to get that rear window regulator
replaced, but I'd let it go for $600 or a bit more if I have to buy a
regulator.  Or if you want me to fool with the code issues we can sort
that out.  It's gonna need a set of tires, not sure I would drive from
here to Okieland on the ones on there, but maybe they would be OK,. they
are just worn.

Re: [MBZ] I give up, just shoot me now please

2017-10-30 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
Yet, it’s always my fault some how. The last car I had her in was the 140 which
caught on fire. I had to put her in this car when that happened, otherwise I
would be driving this car. It’s the one you rode in when you were here. I got
the 140 going again pretty easily but it’s got a strange issue with the
ignition switch now. At first I thought it was related to the fire but now I
don’t think so. It started getting to when you turned the key on none of the
dash lights would light up. If you moved the key back slightly it would kick
on, so it seems like a contact issue in the switch. I did not want to put that
car back into service until o addresses that but looks like o have no choice.
It’s either that or she can drive the SDL, which I don’t really want to see
torn up.

The kids blown up e430 is still out there and beat all to hell. Maybe i should
slap another radiator it it and let her drive that.

2017-10-30 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Hard to tell from the pics, but I don't see bumper distortion, which leads
me to surmise the uni body frame structure might likely be intact and
unbent.
A careful inspection and a trip across a frame machine would tell that
story properly. otherwise, looks to be sheet metal, ie fender panel and
perhaps hood.

Paint replacements to match.. unbolt, rebolt... fit... done... maybe...

Air bags deploy? [considerable expense there].

Gee, I don't think that the air in my tires weighs very much. Toyota

Are you using the master key and not the valet key? The master key I gave
you had no key head but was just a bare piece of metal.

I THINK you can turn a valet key into a master key by using a Dremel
grinder to enlarge the middle slot on both sides of the key.

I do recall 240D motor mounts in the bunch of stuff I gave you.

[MBZ] Airless tires!

2017-10-30 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
ELECTRIC VEHICLESHow to make cars lighter? Toyota explores airless
tiresPublished:
Monday, October 30, 2017

Toyota Motor Corp. is looking to develop airless tires to reduce the weight
of its electric and fuel-cell vehicles.

The company last week unveiled its Fine-Comfort Ride, a hydrogen-powered
concept car, at the Tokyo Motor Show. The vehicle features individual
motors for each wheel and airless tires, which are essentially a ring of
rubber surrounding a wheel hub made from plastic and aluminium.

Right now, the futuristic rubber products weigh about the same as
conventional tires. But Toyota chief engineer Takao Sato hopes continuing
development will cut 11 pounds off each tire by 2025 or so, helping to make
electric cars easier to power.

"For automakers, the attraction of airless tires is for electrified
vehicles," Sato said.

Still, the technology is years away from coming to the commercial market.
Though airless tires are already manufactured for small vehicles like golf
carts and lawn mowers, they are unproven for larger passenger cars.

Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd., which supplied the tires for the Toyota
concept, is hoping to have an airless product available for small electric
cars by 2020 (Kevin Buckland, Bloomberg
,
Oct. 29). *— NS*

Re: [MBZ] Hello

2017-10-30 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
My manual s/r is also tricky. I must coordinate my legs gripping the seat
for leverage so I don't throw my rotator cuff when opening and closing it
(1983 300TD).

That's a very common blue, same as my first 300TD. Tief blau?

2017-10-30 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Any success?

Read that, looks like that is only for synchronizing the sunroof controls.
I wonder it that will solve an issue I've got with The White Whale, where
the sunroof will stop for no apparent reason when trying to open it and it
reaches about 2 inches open. The pop-up function works great, but when it
stops during the opening function, I have to manually crank it closed a
little bit before the motor will work again and it can be closed with the
switch. I've assumed the motor is going bad and has a bad spot on the
commutator, but perhaps that is not the case?

I still need to RTFOM.

Re: [MBZ] 123 fuel mileage - was: Two Questions

2017-10-30 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My favorite thing about my Jetta is the 12 gallon fuel tank and 50mpg, I love
hearing the pump stop.
I was at the gas station one time, big diesel pickup across from me when I
pulled up. When I put the nozzle back he cried out "Ain't you gonna put any
in?" I said "Well I would but this will hold me for 500 miles..." We shared a
laugh.

It is to be the boy's first car.  Stickshift.  Not particularly valuable
but reasonably safe.  And we already own it.  He just turned 16.  He's
reasonably interested in its fuel economy, as we've had him filling the
other cars at the gas station as practice.  He was pretty shocked to
'discover' that it's pretty much $50 a pop these days, and they happen
fairly often---especially on the wife's X5, which is now on its second
engine, the first one apparently having been worn out due to IMHO the
excessive driving.  He's becoming aware of how long it takes to earn $50
down at his stratum.
