Good point. The DoD facilities I saw like that also had SCBAs for the
personnel. I got to see a drill one time, pretty scary stuff.

The control room operators get two minutes to don SCBAs after the predump timer
started alarm comes in.
The design is for (roughly) two minutes to don SCBAs, then two minutes to
secure the unit before evacuating the control room to the remote shutdown
panels. Most operating crews can do that
I have seen some DoD facilities like that.

There are a few places where the chance of dead employees is more acceptable

When I was young I rented a townhose with laundry hookups in an upstairs closet
(machines not included).
I bought a used washer and dryer (surprisingly cheap in those days) and hauled
them up the stairs with an appliance dolly. Not fun, but not too bad. The
washer was the worst, it was an old

Truly, the convenience of not having to lug clothes up and down stairs is a

Old houses used to have a laundry chute to get laundry from the bedroom areas
to the basement. I never see these anymore, guessing maybe they are a fire code
issue now.

The previous owners of our house moved the laundry room from the basement

Halon is a chlorocarbon or fluorocarbon or bromocarbon gas, one of the Freon
family. It’s heavy, so it displaces oxygen, but the main effect is to suppress
ionization which prevents combustion. Same reason we make a high bromine Lexan
where I work, it’s fire resistant.
