Re: [MBZ] OT: Curt will need all his snow machines

2022-01-28 Thread Clay via Mercedes
In GWN the kids are too pampered to bother with shoveling. Could be due to
parents having power tools. SWMBA got a 300cc, 30inch two stage monster Troy
Bilt for the property when she moved up. Many of the neighbors are now
sporting puny battery powered 21inch machines. Quiet, but not that good for
accumulations. I will run the big thing down the sidewalks and clear the mass
mailbox station. Also hit a few of the driveways of the older gals who have
not contracted with plow operators.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Curt will need all his snow machines

2022-01-29 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I found chickens were a great solution. I used a push mower on the tiny patch
of grass and found it exceedingly swift job done. The chickens roamed the yard
and kept weeds and bugs in check in my fevered mind. Had the push mower out
once a month at most. Then, I went a season without hens. I was out there all
spring and autumn and much of summer until the grass went to sleep. I got the
first few sets of chicks the next spring and reduced lawn care and weeding to a
few hours a month. Better than a herd of goats

[MBZ] Learn something each day

2020-10-10 Thread Clay via Mercedes
TIL NYC has the most native americans (111k) in the nation. OKC (36.5k) has
more natives than ANC(35.9k). NYC is some 309 square miles, while ANC is 1944
miles. I am going to posit there are more classic mercedes at okie acres than
in all of ANC.

Another tidbit, because the work at home scheme does not provide ready access
to business mail, so it shows up in bulk drops days or weeks after postal
delivery, a native corporation just became the largest booze vendor in the
state. This increased their retail revenue 600%, from $2mm to $12mm annually.
No roads in the dry villages, so more likely to hit a moose or sled dog with a
snow machine than crash a benz on a bender.

Also the Bar Rag reports that divorce, bankruptcy, domestic violence, estate
planning and torts are up. Day drinking has increased, but the lack of
operational economy has resulted in fewer people trying to go eat or purchase
things, so DUI is down. Aggressively unmasked walkers, moms and kids, are
intimidating the few AARP card holders brave enough to be seen in public.
Normally these oldsters only venture out wearing a face covering in their
sealed vehicles. I have not witnessed any masking in Mercedes cars.

I did not. No alerts in town, but I think it was more scary and tidal waves

Re: [MBZ] OT: Geothermal energy to the rescue

2020-10-24 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Interesting.

Article claims AK has large geothermal. Not really. Only viable current use
is for a supplemental veggie grow operation connected to a hot spring resort.
The bulk of the resource is too cool for more than hot house use unless the
drilling can get beyond 4km. Maps of explored sources show mostly shallow and
cool which then peters out past 1200m. The other problem relates to everything
being out in the boonies, beyond fiscally viable recovery and delivery to
market. Except if you are living on an Aleutian island with a resident volcano
to tap.

This is what SWMBA deems reliable transport. Given the more recent quality
issues DBAG has suffered and the few years MB has been in the AK market, there
was no reasonable option of having a Benz here. Dealer is clueless about
anything made prior to the current century with shallow tech talent. I found
but one indy shop in the state.

There are only third or fourth tier dealerships in the state. There are
constant ads for tech employees to man service centers no matter what brand.
May as well bit the bullet until I can escape back to the real world and snag a
Landy II or FJ 45 out of Mexico

[MBZ] Mac laptop

2020-10-25 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I am needing a desktop replacement, maybe, for life in GWN. Being in a small
house, locked away due to WRD, portable would be better, as there is no
chamber/room to actually set up my Mac Pro.

Currently I depend upon a 2009 macbook that is getting long in the tooth.
Hardware in SEA, yet to arrive here is the MP 3,1 loaded out with 4-2GB drives,
32GB ram, dual Xeon 3.2. This is the homebase unit with all data
(photo/video/audio) and pairing of devices. There is a time machine hdd as
well as some external drives (firewire). Other unit is a mid 2010 mac mini
fully outfitted and time machine unit as well, that hooked to the old 52” TV.

Should I really be looking at the current crop of hardware, be it Mac Pro or
MBP 16? Cost and lack of optical drive/upgrade path deter going for either.
Retina models were a quality quagmire, which leaves the mid 2012 MBP. Not sure
the soda can MP solves anything.

Chime in please

2020-10-25 Thread Clay via Mercedes
The rest of the family uses winder 10. There are multiple crisis each week
with winders or the hardware going AWOL. I quit using winblows with XP when it
kacked itself somehow and refused to allow a re-install with the factory disk.
At that point I moved to Linux for that hardware, going pure MacOS. Some of
the HP laptops, both factory and costco aged out quickly with the boys using
them at school. Not sure why, but two years in (even with the cutting edge i7)
they “needed” to build towers to meet the computing needs.

I think I will look at the refurbs/renew until the reliability of the newest
apple hardware proves out. Trash can MP seemed a tangle of cords and
peripherals when it came out. The portable need is related to lack of access
to desk in the current house. I have to schlep from surface/seat with all the
“home schooling/lockdown” panic. Makes me think home offices will become a
major design theme for the next decades in new construction. No more granite
and brushed SS or box beam ceilings

Re: [MBZ] Mac laptop

2020-11-06 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Close the loop on this post.

I went with MBP 9,2, as it has the optical drive. The HDD is good enough for
now, at 500GB. Upgrading ram to 16GB, battery has fair life left. I had
intended to upgrade to 2TB hybrid drive, max ram and fresh battery, but got
bogged down with trying to migrate data.

Short of yanking the drive from my current macbook and hooking it as external,
what other option? I should have done the migrations right off, but the MBP
came with a factory reset to 10.8.5 and required physical connection. I spent
a day dragging the OS all the way to Catalina, thinking it would then allow me
to migrate, which with El Crapitan it balked (MB is high sierra) saying the MBP
was too retarded to access the MB drive. Now it says the MB is too retarded to
be read by the MBP over wifi.

I suspect it will be much quicker to pull the MB drive and suck data onto the
MBP. What holds me back is I am doing all my work from the Macbook, and it now
knows it is being replaces and has become recalcitrant about responsiveness and
trackpad/KB input. Then, I will need to gather all the data from the MacPro,
once I return to SEA. Another mess I suspect, as that holds terabytes of photo
and music.

They only share RJ-45 and USB. After scouring interwebz, looks like removal
from MB and sticking it to USB 2 cable/sata cord for hooking to MBP to cherry
pick files.

Yes

Just trying to find the Appstore crap that I purchased is a trial. Yesterday
(not catalina) I could see all the things I ever had. Today, the interface is
opaque and convoluted and shows nothing I have elsewhere. I search while
looking at the applications folder, and find most of it GONE. Like Firefox and
the anti virus/spyware stuff. Productivity, games, lots of things remain alive
on the MB, but will not find fertile ground in the MBP.

Itunes? Now I am locked out, so must find a way to import the old libraries.
And it will not show my store credits. Says I am flat broke. Must be because
I refused to give them banking data for apple pay.

The Mac Pro is/has legacy support. One of the drives is partitioned with
obsolete examples of OSX, such that I support the original iPad, iPod touches
and Classic iPods, as well as stuff as current as 2016. Everything is paired
to that computer, which leaves the old and working iTunes able stuff orphan
when I upgrade to Apple silicon.

SWMBA got mad at me for snagging the MBP 9,2. She planned on dumping the MBP
16” fully loaded as the holiday gift. I explained that it was last of the
intel line and I am a rusting, not bleeding edge adopter. Maybe in a few years
she can source the ARM based Mac Pro, if they turn out reliable.

Talking with realtors to off load the SEA home. This place has lost its mind.
I am being told that inventory is so tight I should expect bidding wars and
escalations of $200-300K over asking. I just got home last week and already
two agents want to tour and give me market analysis. I did not contact them, I
think my phone is listening when I was talking to a neighbor

There is a very soft “offer” floated this week of $1.1M prior to listing. Once
it gets out into the MLS wilderness, then the circus begins and the six figure
bumps kick in. Up to SWMBA to decide if she wants three rings or a quiet sale

Too small for SWMBA to cover. Her deals are for mines and oil field real
property deals. Selling a house bewilders her. As for effort, I can spruce up
the place a bit. Doing “business” is outside my bailiwick. Tend to be a bit
acerbic and terse when dealing with standard humans. Best that a glad handler
provide smooth interactions. Recent adverse event is pointing to early onset
mental decline. Simpler for long distance deal having intermediary once the
place is cleared out and minor fixes applied

[MBZ] Probably more appropriate ...

2021-03-18 Thread Clay via Mercedes
for Banned

Could it be bad gas?

The 450SL had a full tank of no ethanol and sat alone since 2019. I am back
home and took her out for a spin. Cold running is perfect, but once we get up
to temp, she gets the vapors and seems to have massive flattus when the go fast
pedal is applied.

I ran her down a few gallons and tossed in some Marvel Mystery, as well as
Lucas juice in hopes of better results. Then took her for more vigorous trips
until I had half a tank of space to put fresh fuel. Still runs like crap once
at temp.

This is ’73 M117 D-jet (fully sorted with new injectors) that ran like a charm
on no alcohol fuels prior to being stuck by WRD. Cold fuel is all good, vapor
issues when warm that were normal only for hot starts but did not persist with
good fuel. Now it hates me. Should I just run the tank close to dry and put
fresh ethanol free fill up or worry there is more to the story? I probably
have maybe two tanks of fuel that will pass through before she sells. WRD is
putting a cramp on social gathering where I would take the SL.

Re: [MBZ] Why would anybody want to live in CA?

2021-03-20 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Racist and elitist agenda against the working class people who are living
paycheck to paycheck or just slowing going deeper into debt. The bottom rung
of the populace struggles to survive and the racist elites erect blocks against
their survival at every turn.

A person should be able to effect repairs upon their property and effects
without undue hinderance by the ruling class and Karens. IF you plan on
curtailing the lower class from seeking continued survival, just go out and
kill them outright and be open about the repression. Being poor does not look
pretty, but there are more people groveling at the bottom of the pile than
those who can afford to visit the dealership or pay for a repair that could and
should be able to be done at home.

My home may have been unsightly when I was basking in multiple bottom feeder
Benz that were glad to be roadworthy by my own wrenching. Had I been required
to/mandated they be professionally service, there is no way I could have kept
any of them driving or available for another owner to love and service them.

A pox upon California, may it be swallowed by the sea and its populace of
elitist be consumed by plague.

Seattle has become a backwashed P trap of California. Same lack of laws and
mindless sheeple trudging toward the slaughter. The elite take no care of the
“mandates” though they dutifully muzzle while seen in public. Today, while
power washing the vast estate, I saw at least 40 high end cars and must have
been 100 people of all ages from toddlers to nonagenarians congregate at a
neighbors home. The idiot Goobernator and his minions declaim that only 10
blood relatives in their genetic bubble are allowed to gather. Not being a
Karen, I just kept on with my task and sniggered at the hypocrisy.

Selling the old homestead this Spring. I am marveling at the obsolete tech
hooked up to the outside wall. Landlines that no longer serve with attendant
box. Cable TV multiple incursions that are no longer pertinent, Fiber from
the pole that has not been active for three years, and the Direct TV dishes on
the roof. The advent of 5G is just around the corner, but that is all some
magical wireless box o’ wifi for all I can tell. Still have far too many cable
and wires terminating at the house that serve no purpose.

BTW, the cell Service at my home is garbage. I have to use the cell hotspot
for interwebz. I did a speed test and came back with 0.06 down stream.
Upstream was almost 0.20 with the 4G vzw. Ping in the 54 range.

Re: [MBZ] Blood Tests

2021-04-01 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Life is short. I was getting marginal test results and carried some excess
mass that the Medico would give me stink eye about, but no preaching, just
shared my numbers so I could ignore or maybe take my own form of action.

A few years ago I figured out that a vintage/older/classic chassis may no
longer require the alimentary supplementation of a younger and
growing/developing critter, so cut back to a single daily meal. Slightly well
rounded on a weekly metabolic nutrient basis (multi vitamin and ignore the five
of this, six of that, daily calorie/vitamin/fruit/veggie/meat/starch food
pyramid scheme). Drink plenty of fluids and eat what you like within the one
meal every 24 hours. Still have a breaking of fasting and tiny “treat” or
small snack each day, but there is real hunger and not just boredom and rote
three meals. Eating only when truly hungry and fasting, since old folks
require less sustenances.

Last few annual physicals have had significant reductions of “troubling” (MD’s
assessment) test results. BP is lower, cholesterols are much lower (to the
point the doc stopped trying to push statin), blood sugar is way down, and just
more “fit” at least on paper.

I still indulge with bacon, fats, ice cream, and the other supposed “bad” food.
Same old Garbage In, Garbage Out, but with less of it, the results on tests
show I am super more healthful. It did result in a loss of 20 kilo of
un-required mass. My meals are satiating and rich enough to please. I think
it boils down to moderation as one ages. Grab that donut, eat the bacon, eggs,
sausage and gravy, whatever makes your soul happy, but not at all hours of the
day every darn day. Nobody performs the labors that a rural agrarian diet
required anymore. We sit on our duff consuming netflix with a quart of rocky
road and a package of Oreo after Zoom calls while our butts go numb.

YMMV, just take the time to figure out what your specific lifestyle requires
and amend your consumption and activity to satisfy the need. Eat a Twinkie if
it makes you happy, just not the whole damn box in one sitting.

Re: [MBZ] OT Home and auto insurance

2021-04-13 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Liberty is in the class of company (Family) I will avoid like plague. Mostly
because their drivers have impacted my cars, causing expensive damage and their
adjusters and whole method is to screw over the aggrieved party by holding out
for as long as possible, creating all manner of inconveniences, such that after
five weeks of getting nowhere, you just cave and have your own policy cover the
damage. You end up out your deductible, have the car off the road for months,
and feel poorly about the whole mess. Whichever umbrella company liberty falls
under, their insureds have taken out the w124, caused mass damage to the w220,
and caused the w126 SD to be totaled, tried to have it hauled away after hours
from the body shop, and I ended up footing the bill out of pocket to get them
to back off, contacted personal injury lawyer to get after them, and ratted
them out to state insurance commissioner, who penalized them over multiple
illegal actions. I had to use my own coverage for the extensive medial claims,
and their adjusters hounded me to close out the claim, even though there is a
three year window for addressing the bodily harm.

If you do not mind having criminals insuring your belongings, get liberty. I
am sticking with USAA

[MBZ] MMO = OK

2021-04-17 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I did an oil level check on the R107 (sat for 15 months during Caramba plague)
before heading out for Thai with my mother who lives 30 miles away. The car
has been sitting in the garage since Xmas 2019, and I did pull it out for the
neighbor real estate guy to get a look at it while he was pitching me on hiring
him to peddle the homestead. Anyway, only vehicle in the stable and I had yet
to get it out long enough to warm the oil for changing. Found it was just a
tad low, about a pint would fix it enough for the drive. I checked the stock
of M1 and found I had just enough to effectuate a change, not enough to top off
as well. I did have a bottle of Marvel Mystery Oil, so I tossed that in with a
plan to do the change when I got home.

On checking, the oil looked to be a nice amber on the dipstick, and the red MMO
did not change that color when making sure there was enough lube to keep the
engine happy. Had a fine meal and visit with nonagenarian matriarch and drove
home. As I took the off ramp, the engine displayed that overly heated
underhood D-jet vapor sputters. It was a warm day and traffic had been heavy,
but engine temps had remained below 180. Pulled into the garage and popped the
hood to allow access for the topsider to do its job. Got it sucking and out
comes this pitch black goo. The M1 15-50 was akin to oil extracted from my
diesels, not a vergasser. The filter was saturated with black, as if it had
been overwhelmed trapping the schmutz. The MMO seems to have scrubbed passages
and places carbon crud had been hiding.

I cleaned out the filter body, installed the fresh Mahle, and poured in 8
quarts of fresh M1. Gave her a little time to allow it to flow all the way
into the pan, then lit her off to get the new fluid throughout. Checking the
dipstick, and almost right on the mark for full, clean as a whistle, and when I
took her to get fresh no alcohol fuel, she ran like a Singer sewing machine.

Re: [MBZ] MMO = OK

2021-04-18 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I have not done much at all other than getting fresh fuel and the oil. My
tools are packed and heading out of state, so I am limited in what I can do.
Battery was on a tender for those 15 months. I checked ATF and PS fluids and
added as needed. Brakes will want a flush, but that will be for the next
owner.

There are five trugs of parts and replacements that accompany the SL. Full set
of pad and rotors, valve covers, spare headers, gaskets and seals, headlight
surrounds and tail lights, fluids, filters, and all manner of things that I had
ready on hand in case I needed them or had yet to get around to changing out,
like the AC compressor. Spare fuel pump, seat pad for passenger, just a bunch
of things that when my indy still had a shop I was forbidden to work, as I
would end up dragging my screw up to him for proper repairs.

With the great weather hitting PNW this week, I am going to give her a wash and
wax/sealant beauty treatment, since her outing in December ’19 did not allow
for proper detailing.

I am pretty sure SEA is supposed to have a gestapo to handle metal trades.
Before the Current Plague, the copper theft was really hot here. To the point
the idiots were taking live high tension wires and any other under secured
copper.

Scrap cars were getting around $35/ton and the yards were no longer sending
wreckers out to collect, as it cost them too much to bother. Now, most of the
yards are closed down, even though PnP remains open, as it is an Essential

Re: [MBZ] OT: truck prices

2021-04-18 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I have been looking at bottom feeder box truck for hauling #1 boy’s possessions
from house we are selling to him in ND. Pickem up and enclosed truck/van
prices are still up there. I do notice a number of commuter cars around the
neighborhood that have not been moved for at least a year. Everybody is camped
at home with face diapers and not at work. White privileged Tesla area, not
“essential” workers around here.

SWMBA is in the market for a new car and is having a hard time not wanting to
be stuck with generic red/white/black/grey. She was told by one dealer that
she could special order, but with the caramba virus and the chip shortage, the
car in the color she wants would arrive around 2025.

Re: [MBZ] Pressure washer funs

2021-04-18 Thread Clay via Mercedes
I have taken a pressure washer to a house for paint prep. Best to do it a week
before you are expecting much warmer weather, so it can dry out. Use a very
wide pattern so you are not eating into the wood. Take your time and slowly
pass over the walls. Aim downward and start from the top. I learned from the
mistakes I made. You still will need to scrape, as the washer lifts big stuff
off. A surfactant solution is a good idea for helping dirt let go. Lots of
drop cloth to catch the gunk that comes off to keep it from collecting in the
plantings.

Re: [MBZ] DFW

2021-04-19 Thread Clay via Mercedes
The SEA home is now in the flight path of a bunch of planes. When built in
1926, the place might have been impacted by the Navy base over the hill with
their flights, many that ended up in the lake instead of runway. Base left
about 50 years ago, so that did not impact. There are float planes that go
over from their base to downtown every morning and evening, not that
bothersome. The adjusting of the flight path to SeaTac did cause an increase
of noise. But the engineering of engines has decreased it. The folks who used
to live right alongside the airport raised a fuss and that caused the paths to
be changed so lots more folks got the enjoy jet noise.

ANC house is a few blocks from the runway and there is one that has the cargo
747 go by right outside the window. I hear the darn things spooling up at 0300
(but they make noise all through the night. There are a number of speedy homes
that share my joy. Not to mention the waterfront homes on the lake with their
float planes buzzing like flies all summer and sometimes even swapping out skis
so they can operate in winter as well.

I am not a flight aficionado, but thems are the breaks. As more people want
homes, more places that are not conducive to living beside them will be built
up.

2021-04-27 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Just signed a listing for my humble dojo. Realtor thinks seven figures, easy.
Older Tudor style, so you either love classic, or you are going to knock it
down and build to within inches of the lot line.

Around me, the homes are predominantly post war suburb 50s/60s architecture on
largish lots, smaller home. Big enough lots are being divided and getting a
pair of homes, or accessory units. There is lots of growth potential in that
part of the market. Other owners are building out their existing homes to
fullest size for the lots. That will cover them for maybe the next pair of
decades until they have to retire. No idea who will be able to afford these
multi-million boxes at that time.

Mom has made 20x on her investment in a basic box home since 1967. I have
realized 5x return in the past quarter century. I have a hard time seeing this
house offered for $5mm in 2040. Nobody could afford to purchase, though the
neighborhood a kilometer away this house would be selling for twice my ask.
Maybe by then inflation will be like Zimbabwe.

Re: [MBZ] New Okie Acres

2021-04-27 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Left coast is hemorrhaging people. It is so bad the poor people of Uhaul have
no trailers to rent. At all. People fled the pacific coast and went inland.
Closest trailer we could find (to move #1 boy’s things out of the house) is
about 200 miles away from him. So, he would need to round trip from ND and
load up. I had expected to drive out in the SWMBA Toyota donated to him SUV
with a trailer and swap for the new to SWMBA Honda that #1 boy would pick up in
SD.

The national U-Haul estimate of maybe getting trucks and trailers coming back
to the coast is when midwest college kids head to Kollyfornia skoolz, if they
are allowing in person learning. The fee to head east with a truck is over
$2k, trailer would be almost $900. To drag a trailer out of MT to SEA is
running $200.

Fuel costs are closing in on $4/gal reg. AK prices for fuel are in the low
$3.2x range. The oil gets shipped to WA, refined, barged back north and loaded
into tank trucks for distribution. Lucky for me, I am not driving at all here.
Will be homeless in two weeks, rolling in cash by July 4.

They need to get rid of Murkowski. Probably nothing of any impact will come of
things, as AK is a complete mess of politics, where they keep erasing the
actions of the last legislative session, and only fund things one year out.
Big booms and busts, but now they have lost all gains made in the past decade
economically. If you want a VERY stable real estate market with minimal
appreciation, buy in AK. You will be pretty close to underwater most of the
time, until there is a boom, then you can cash out with just enough to break
even.

Same goes with politicians. The residents will undoubtedly vote against their
own interests most of the time. Always getting ballot measures that will
constrict the main source of revenue (oil) coming up on a three year cycle.
Doing it for the “environment”. Like voting to institute a plague and roving
murder gangs so the population will be reduced, allowing for more
disenfranchised to apply for the vacated jobs.

Re: [MBZ] New Okie Acres

2021-04-28 Thread Clay via Mercedes
A sad reality. #1 boy is hoping to acquire a plop of land in ND with his cadre
of buds. They are thinking farmable parcel and compound for under half mil.
Four or five investors, as long as they remain on good terms, could pencil out.
Too hard to foresee the future to my myopic eyes on that point.

Thirty years ago, Dad and uncle cashed out my grandads five acres. Did not
make a mint, but that developed into a suburban ‘hood with, I think, a dozen
homes. Probably not what you want next door.

2021-04-28 Thread Clay via Mercedes
SEA is allowing/mandating that there be up to three housing units permitted on
lots within the city. So, you can build bigger (since they also mandated you
could not build residence larger than 2k sqft) if you include a rentable suite
in the main home, and then you can toss another residential unit for renting
out as “affordable” housing.

My neighborhood you can get a 400 sqft basement apt for around $1k/mo, the
garden shack another $500 or so.

The chinese are swooping in and leveling homes on lots over 0.25 acre. Then
they toss up these slim townhomes that are no wider than a garage. Zoning
allows for mass density. Maybe the investor got the property for a million,
bulldozes and puts up seven units that sell for $1mm each. One two block area
close to the children’s hospital he snagged five lots that had 70 year old
duplexes (formerly nurses and intern housing) and populated them with the
townhomes. I counted over 20 units.

My boy is the electrician, so that works for them. He knows some plumbing.
They also have the heavy diesel mechanic (to keep the generator going) and a
pair of IT workers. One of whose wife is going to be in charge of “farming”.
They boys want their own range on the property, and to have some hunting fun.
Nobody swings hammers. If they could source a mason, that could give them a
sturdy fortified keep.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Tile Work

2021-05-01 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Those are really large. I am not sure they could be cut on a standard tile
saw. I had a devil of a time with 12x12 on my saw. If you rented a large
commercial rig, maybe there would be enough space to hold them flat.

Cutting into the ends, as you outlined, it an elegant solution. I am thinking
you would still need a 4” diamond blade to excise the inner end of the
rectangles. Using the 4” would also allow for putting the hole in one tile.
The way to keep the tile from fracturing is to use lots of water/lube, tape the
outline of the opening, cut very slowly with minimal pressure, and keep the
tile as immobile and flat as possible. Not a 100% outcome, as there were
always a few tiles that had weird stress/structural flaws and shattered. Much
like glass, there seemed to be points of impact that resulted in breakage if
impinged upon.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Steel prices have tripled

2021-05-06 Thread Clay via Mercedes
There is more wood that came over the border in PNW than is harvested locally.
Most of the mills in WA closed down ages ago, and the lumber companies have
been pulling back from harvests. At least that was the case in 2019. Not
being in residence the past year, I have not been witness to current mills.
The processor near my mother’s home was bare of completed/dried/cut lumber and
the yard was minus the normal inventory of logs for this time of year.

The scrap market in this neck of the woods is a monopoly of Schnitzer which
sells crushed cars to the CCP. I am not seeing the standard traffic of trucks
headed out with dead/squished cars that I used to. Not been hitting the PnP,
as I have nothing I need to get there. Also, they have clamped down on how
many people are allowed in the yards. May not be both getting or processing as
many cars as prior to the current plague.

2021-05-06 Thread Clay via Mercedes
built 12/1973, so no CAT. California car. I am third owner. Records from
1987 on, when second owner purchased. I got it in 2012 from the son of the
decease owner. It had 203k on the clock then, it has 215k-ish now. Serviced
by local indy who sorted out D-jet issues and installed fresh injectors in
2017. He had done the fuel pump a few years before. I collected all the
things that I thought it may need or did want fixed, like pass seat cushions,
replacement for AC compressor, … amounting to a pick up load of
extra/spare/replacement for the car. Updates were limited by cash flow, so
that is why I have stuff in boxes. Currently sporting Euro lights. I have the
DOT lamps in a box. Replacement lenses for the rear lights in case originals
get hurt. Around six or seven large Rubbermaid tubs of R107 things.

Silber Grun body, Dunkel Grun top and hubcaps. Green leather seats (soft
without cracks) and interior. The center console was replaced because prior
owner had butchered it to install Sony radio and in car Cell. Brown soft top
that works but is getting old, driver side small window has a tear in plastic.
Got minimal usage in 2019, as I was out half the year. No usage in 2020 (on
battery tender). Got some miles on the clock in 2021, but sitting has made it
need a tune up to put it back into full service. Did get oil and filter change
around 100 miles ago. Been using non alcohol fuel since 2015 because it is
less volatile and reduces known hot engine start issues. Trigger points
replaced with rebuilt, MAP is good, Djet brain was replaced. There is a spare
in the boxes. Transmission was last serviced 2017 and only 2500 miles since.
Cooling system rebuilt.

Been garage kept most of its life. No accidents while I owned it. Some
evidence of prior panel replacement. Tires are good, alignment done in 2017 at
211k miles. Brakes are good, and I have replacement rotors and pads for when
the current things age out. This is NOT BaT car, but a reliable rolling
Preservation Class award car (2x). It does need the cross over pipe section of
exhaust replaced, from there back is new since 2015. Headers and seals
replaced around that time.

Does 85mph for extended (200 miles) periods with ease. Does not blow cold air,
at all. Does have not original Becker Mexico that pulls in stations when it
wants. Power antenna does work, but does not pull in signal well, so has been
unpowered. I collected all manner of original dealer literature (sales, paint
brochure, and on and on) Even have matchbox example 107 in green paint in the
glove box.

At the moment it will be included in the estate sale of household goods over
Memorial Day weekend.

Digital leads to fewer workers and more vulnerability.

Analog will give you much greater employment and the flesh and blood can make
things happen when lights go out. Mechanical systems may rust up, but you have
to kill the operator to make it go down.

That would resolve a host of issues for the cruise ship industry. AK is going
to have a massive bust if the boats full of tourist fail to show up for yet
another year. Thing were just starting to look up after six years of
recession, and then the current plague sucked a massive number of jobs in
tourism out with the tides. Canada does not allow boats to transit or dock, so
anybody getting on a boat in Seattle, with Jones act dead, would be most
welcome in GWN. Not sure how much more transport of goods northbound would
make for better living there as well.

Then again, the boats heading south are pretty much deadheading garbage/trash
and recycling. Not much of commercial value otherwise.

Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical

Boeing, flying windows into the ground.

Oil out of AK is still sitting just under $70. Maybe the price will creep up
now that there is less fuel making its way to the Mid-Atlantic. Probably not.
Bakken remains reasonable. West TX the same. Could see a replay of the oil
mess of last May. Fuel prices rise, while crude backs up into tanks

Sure you can! Contact all manner of eco friendly municipalities or property
owners and haul the kids on over. SEA loves to contract for goat removal of
offending herbaceous matter. The bus arrives, the area is fenced off and for
the next few days goat poop is produced. Then the kids get back on the bus and
head off to greener pastures. Maybe the things could be used to clear homeless
encampments. Eat the greens and some trash, ship some hogs in to take care of
the really nasty stuff… like campers

Welcome back John.

Could be bushings, but hard to say. I locked up a manny trying to install
fresh bushings. Should have been more careful about not letting the
transmission end arms move. With wiggly play in the rods, sometimes two gears
can become engaged. I had to secure a fresh working trans to swap in. Never
did get the locked up one torn down and rebuilt.

I was noting that the trailer looks a bit cobbled together with the original
rounded Scamp body having grown a baby bulb that would be the sleeping spot.
Really putting a bunch of downward thrust on the hitch. Maybe it was meant for
a taller clearance truck?

Looks interesting and cool.

Re: [MBZ] Price Of Fuel

2021-05-11 Thread Clay via Mercedes
New adventure in the Clay departs SEA saga.

Yesterday I had a taxi take me to the Port of Tacoma to pick up the car SWMBA
had sent down from ANC to replace the krap Yeep of #1 boy in ND. He spent the
past weekend picking up her new CRV in Sioux Falls. We are to swap cars on the
plains of MT this weekend. The honda heads to GWN on Monday.

Short story long, the Yota was supposed to be serviced in ANC, but time ran
out, so I schedule it for a shop near me. Since sending things on a boat out
of the arctic is a dynamic adventure, it could have been 7-10 days the car
shows up. Got lucky and it came early and instead of trying to get it serviced
5/16 as scheduled (service manager said it could take 2 days to get the work
done) I begged for dropping it off this morning and maybe they could shoe horn
it in if they got some slack time. Big surprise to me, they actually were able
to do a full service by the end of the day.

Car was sent with less than quarter tank of fuel and I was pretty sure I could
get it home and to the shop on the fumes in the tank. When I picked the car up
a few hours ago, I went to fuel up for the long drive ahead. Pulled up to the
pump and 87 octane is now $4.28/gal. Crazy. There are two refineries in the
state and the oil they process comes out of AK. Must be sympathy pains for
rising fuel prices on the other coast.
