seem to be able to find the complete headlight assembly availables? TIA.

Guys,
Forgive the memory lapse, as having MB-Tex in both my diesels I've had no

What is the name of that super leather treatment stuff and where is it

[MBZ] another oddball experience with W123 heat - update

2015-03-12 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
Guys,
I changed the new mono valve insert, which I had obtained from the PartsGeek,
back to the one I had in there previously where one could not regulate the
temperature via the PBU thumbwheel . . . it would be max heat at the MAX
position or almost no heat at any other temp setting. The old mono valve now
back in place now, get this, I've got regulateable heat via the PBU thumbwheel
now where the new mono valve insert didn't provide any heat at any PBU setting
. . . go figure; I'm thankful for miracles no matter in what form they appear.
I'm gonna' try sending back the new mono valve inserts to the PartsGeek. I'll
bet they're Chinese junk as there are no markings and the diameter of the mono
valve (silver) shaft is rather large which causes quite a tight fit.
Also, in reference to the multi-purpose (turn signal) stalk which I was having
trouble with in my '84 300D and replaced with one obtained on Ebay where the
seller indicated that it was a working stalk, I just got done measuring
continuities of the 14 pin connector in all stalk positions of my original
stalk and, since I cannot get the lo-beam headlight position to lose continuity
when gently wiggling the stalk as it had been doing when it was in the car
previously (Note: I've since done a quite a thorough cleaning , etc. of the
original stalk while out of the car using acetone and DeOxit . . . maybe that's
the reason it seems to be working OK? I'll reinstall it in the car to see what
happens and try to return the Ebay obtained stalk to the seller, though he has
not responded yet but I'll follow the Ebay rules and wait 3 days before
contacting Ebay.

[MBZ] another oddball experience with W123 heat

2015-03-11 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
Since both my '84 300D & '85 300TD have trouble maintaining heat as chosen via
the thumbwheel on the left of the PBU and I've been through (including
resoldering) the troubleshooting guide numerous times for both units and not
found a definitive problem. To explain about the problem of not maintaining
heat, what actually happens for example when a temperature is chosen via the
thumbwheel on the PBU say just below the MAX (note: click stop setting), the
heat will gradually disappear within a couple minutes and I have to keep
switching to MAX, etc. Since I've inspected the neoprene seals of the mono
valve inserts in both cars using a 10X loop and haven't been able to locate any
very small holes, I recently purchased new mono valve inserts and installed a
new one in the 300D and drove it this evening and had no heat no matter what .
. . go figure. Like I believe many others on this list, I wish these cars had
the old mechanical heating/cooling control system and not the dreaded elec
 tronic fancilessness.

Re: [MBZ] '85TD interior fan odd behavior update

2015-03-10 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
For anyone keeping track, I changed out the PBU with a spare I have and the
same thing occurs where the interior fan does not come on when the Hi-speed fan
and middle (lower) PBU button are depressed after the car is started but the
fan will start when the defrost button is depressed, so it looks like I've
gotta' look into the connection(s) to the fan itself.

Re: [MBZ] '85TD interior fan odd behavior update

2015-03-09 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
The odd behavior which I described previously does not occur when the fan is on
and hitting any sort of bump, the fan does not come on after restarting the car
(e.g., when running errands) when it's ptreviously been running but seems to
come back on after 2 or 3 restarts. And, yes the #8 fuse was replaced with a
new one to no effect. I noticed a little while ago while running some errands
that the fan will come on when the defrost button of the PBU is depressed but
the other buttons don't seem to work when the high speed fan button is also
depressed. And, yes I've pushed the high speed vs. the low speed fan settings
to try to get the fan to run, but only turning off the car and restarting seems
to help. Since my PBU has been stripped/resoldered, I don't believe the
problem is there but I'll replace it with the spare I've got to see.

[MBZ] '85TD interior fan odd behavior

2015-03-08 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
Guys,

Just thought I'd touch base to see if any of you have experienced the same fan
oddity and found the cause, etc. While driving around the other day on some
errands and stopping/starting the car occasionally, the interior fan would not
turn on after a restart unless I turned the car off again (sometimes it would
require 2X restarts for the fan to start). Anyone got any suggestions as to
where/what to look for? And, no it's not the fuse (8). TIA.

[MBZ] '84 300D multi-purpose stalk

2015-01-28 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
I've been having a somewhat intermittent problem with my low beam headlights
turning off seemingly on their own. It seem to occur when either hitting a

flasher so it must be in the multi-purpose stalk. I've sprayed DeOxit D5 in
the switch and exercised it in all directions but the problem persists. My

Re: [MBZ] W123 Fuel Sending Unit

2015-01-05 Thread G. M. Brown via Mercedes
I may have missed the original post on this subject as I was away and deleted
most of the stuff from the list.
I have a repaired (cleaned and 0.202mm Nichrome wire replaced 5/13) '85 300TD
fuel sending unit which I'd let go for considerably less if that's what one of
you is interested in.
Note: the fuel gauge in my TD was behaving oddly (bouncing around, etc.) so I
obtained a replacement fuel sending unit from the local PNP, managed to break
the Nichrome wire in both the original fuel sending unit as well as the one
obtained from the PNP. I ordered the 0.202mm Nichrome wire and repaired both
units.

Jaime,
As per my previous note, the glow plug lite in the dash lites up OK when the
key is turned to the ON/Start position but, when the condition occurs when it
doesn't start, there's only a slight click and a signal from the starter as if
the battery was almost dead . . . not enough power to turn the starter enough
to start the car. Note, a new glow plug fuse was installed in March. What I
don't understand is that the car wouldn't start yesterday, but started OK today
prior to my doing anything to it.
Thanx.

Hi Glenn,
This is why information from the internet isn't always so reliable ;-)
Funny... I have the same issue with my 79 300SD. I take apart the relay once a
year to clean it up with deoxit and some paper towels. One of these days I'll
break down and buy a new one, but until then...
One thing you should be weary of is the fuse. It might look good, but not be
able to support the 50+amps when the plugs are glowing. I've seen them when
they look ok, then break in two when you remove them a fiddle with them a bit.
What exactly is the problem when it doesn't work? No light and no glow? Or no
light with glow? If I remember correctly it is a failure mode for the light to
not come on, but still provide power to the plugs if there is one or more thats
failed.
Good luck,Jaime

Jaime,
Prior to going out to the garage to see what else I could do about this, I
found the following from a guy on the PeachParts site:
Yes, you can pull it apart and clean the board/resolder the components.

If it's stuck on just pull the "bucket" off, removing a screw in each of
the four corners. Check the solenoid (the thing that moves) and it's
contacts. Sometimes water will seep in and corrode on the contacts. They
should be smooth. If they're not use a piece of sandpaper or a really
fine file to remove any built up corrosion.

If that doesn't work, just get another one. Unless you want to spend the time
testing and resoldering each component.

Today's episode:
1. The car started OK prior to doing anything.
2. The glow plug lite in the dash lites up OK when the key is turned to the
ON/Start position.
3. There's continuity between the two sides of the glow plug fuse.
4. There's power to each side of the glow plug fuse when the key is turned to
the ON/Start position.
5. For grins, I DeOxit'd the female pin plugs to the glow plug relay box.
6. The car started OK after messin' around as well.

If the bloody thing misbehaves on my attempt to go to church tomorrow, I'm not
sure what else I can do.

I think the problem is that you sanded the contacts. Its like ignition points,
if you sand off the surface coating then the likelyhood that they corrode and
fail again are much higher.

Since my '84 300D may very well be my last car and I didn't want to take a
chance on used fenders from a junkyard, I obtained a couple fenders from the
Classic Center in CA. As I recall, the price wasn't too exorbitant and the
fellow ( jon.sigg...@mbusa.com ) I dealt with was very helpful. Good luck.
