[MBZ] Dual pulley alternator belts

2024-03-26 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Could anyone help or direct me to a source for the correct alternator belts for
my 1982 240D. It has a donor engine that may have come from a 1984 300D and it
has dual belts that run from crank pulley to alternator.

One of the belts was destroyed and I pulled the other one off to measure it.
There are no numbers or manufacturers name on the belt.
It measures 40.25” when measuring out side of the belt from mark to mark. Width
of belt is 3/16”

The sales person at autozone measured it using a belt measuring tool fixture
and told it me it was 390 x 9. He looped it around the two ends of the tool
and then stretched it out. He did not have any belts that were close to the
correct size.

Is there a correct way measure so I can order the correct belt?
Is there a site that lists their belts by size?
Or if anyone could point me to a part number I would like to order a couple of
them.

Thanks for any help,

Mike

New gas stoves are no better than electric. They need power to function. I
love the old ones and wish I still had one.
Going way back, Gramma Dorothy used to cook everything in/on the wood stove
while Grampa Otto fed the pop belly stove in the living room. It was always so
damn hot in there by the time dinner was served. There was always 20 to 30 of
us packed in the old farm house. Loved it!

My daughter is hosting again this year. There will be 18 of us. We celebrate
on Friday. So much easier for everyone.

Program 2 keys - $270
Labor - $1224
Involves removing entire steering column.

[MBZ] Help - WDDGF8AB2DR288607 2013 Mercedes C300

2023-09-23 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Fairly new to us 2013 Mercedes C300. Son purchased a couple of months ago.
About 150,000 miles on it.
Not sure why but it will not turn over. He parked it at the mall and when he
came out it would not fire up. Steering wheel is in lock position and turned
to the far right and does not unlock when key is turned. Is the steering lock
supposed to release with key or when the car starts? The key turns all the way
in the ignition but there is zero response, no clicks or sounds. The battery
seems to be working as the radio works normally.
Any thoughts about what we might check or trouble shoot before we call the tow
truck?
Thanks, Mike

[MBZ] Car for Sonny boy.

2023-06-29 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Thanks for everyone’s help and input.
Ended up buying a Silver 2013 Mercedes C300 149,000 miles for $10,000. We split
the cost and he will pay insurance going forward.

He looked at and drove an 2013 Audi A4 before driving this one. He was kinda
set on getting an Audi and I was not. After driving both of them he quickly
changed his mind an we bought the Mercedes. Car is in excellent shape and has
been dealer serviced since new.

[MBZ] Looking for car for sonny boy.

2023-06-27 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes

My son, Andrew is beginning search for used vehicle. He is a 25 year old
student who will hopefully be starting Med school in the next 6 months or so.
He has been driving our 1991 Civic for several years but it has been sold due
to some rust and high mileage. Actually got $2000 for it!
He is pushing for a Subaru Impreza or something similar. I am discouraging
this and looking more toward a Mercedes all wheel drive in the $8-10,000 range
and would like to get something that is from the south that is relatively rust
free. (My daughter lives in Austin).
I have 2 300D’s and he is driving one of them now but I don’t want him using it
in the winter due to the salt and rust issues.
Any thoughts about what we should be looking for would be welcome. Or even
better does anyone have anything we might interested in? We live in Michigan.
Thanks in advance,

In high school our tennis team bus was a stretch checker cab. 4 doors on
either side.M and bench seats throughout. I remember my buddy and I installing
an 8 track tape player in it and listening to Elton John and Bob Seeger. I’m
not sure what year the cab was or even if it had seat belts. Maybe just lap
belts. I have fond memories. Can you imagine having something like this in
todays world? I sure miss the simplicity of it all.

Food prices are crazy high.

I’ll bet it will be close to $8.50 a pound next time. My supplier said his

I would have happily picked it up locally if they had offered to discount what

Been busy with my wife, she slipped in June in the bathroom and compressed a
vertebrae. 9 days in hospital, home and then back in hospital with blood borne
bacteria that nearly killed her. Still not sure where it came from or how it
entered her system. Bacteria attacked all weak areas. 46 days in hospital, 10
days on a ventilator, brain surgery, lost site on the left side, damaged a
heart valve, and then the surgery in her back. Not a great summer however, she
is recovering and we feel lucky to still have her with us.

Re: [MBZ] Shop air

2021-10-25 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
https://blog.exair.com/2019/05/01/is-pvc-pipe-alright-to-use-with-compressed-air/

Good info on this site with contact info at the to discuss your project.

Is PVC Pipe Alright to Use with Compressed Air?
PUBLISHED ON May 1, 2019 by Brian Farno
A question arises every now and then on whether or not PVC pipe, yes the stuff
from your local hardware store that says it is rated for 200 psi, is safe to
use as compressed air supply line. The answer is always the same, NO! OSHA
agrees – see their statement here.

Schedule 40 PVC pipe is not designed nor rated for use with compressed air or
other gases. PVC pipe will explode under pressure, it is impacted
significantly by temperature and can be difficult to get airtight.

PVC pipe was originally designed and tested for conveyance of liquids or
products that cannot be compressed, rather they can be pressurized. The
largest concern is the failure method of the piping itself. When being used
with a liquid that cannot be compressed, if there is a failure (crack or hole)
then the piping will spring a leak and not shatter. When introducing a
compressed gas, such as compressed air, if there is a failure the method ends
up being shrapnel. This YouTube video does a good job of illustrating how the
pipe shatters.

While it may seem that it takes a good amount of pressure to cause a failure in
the pipe, that is often not the case. I have chatted with some local shop
owners who decided to run PVC as a quick and cheap alternative to get their
machines up and running.

They each experienced the same failures at different points in time as well.
The worst one was a section of PVC pipe installed over a workbench failed where
an operator would normally be standing. Luckily the failure happened at night
when no one was there. Even though no one got injured this still caused a
considerable expense to the company because the compressor ran overnight trying
to pressurize a ruptured line.

Temperature will impact the PVC as well. Schedule 40 PVC is generally rated for
use between 70°F and 140°F (21°-60°C). Pipes that are installed outside or in
non temperature controlled buildings can freeze the pipes and make them brittle.

If you haven’t worked with PVC before or do not let the sealant set, it can be
hard to get a good seal, leading to leaks and a weak spot in the system.

The point of this is the cheapest, quick, and easy solutions are more often ,
the ones that will cost the most in the long run.

If you would like to discuss proper compressed air piping and how to save
compressed air on your systems, please contact us.

Also, if it has two carbs it has been modified. The 77 originally cam with a
single Stromberg carburetor. If it is rust free and running correctly it
should bring 4
$4000 easily. What color is it?
Mine Is a 78, Carmine Red. I rebuilt the engine about 15 years ago. Bored out
cylinders .40 and upgraded the head with larger valves and added a mild cam.
Along with the dual carbs and removal of all unnecessary emissions stuff it’s
fun to drive. I’m 5’10” and I fit in it very nicely. That’s mine son Andy and

In most cities/towns there are already zoning laws in place that cover number
of vehicles, unlicensed vehicles, vehicles on blocks and/or abandoned vehicles.
The difficulty is assigning manpower to follow up and enforce the existing
laws. Instead of wasting time writing new laws they need to figure a way to
enforce the existing ones!

2020-07-18 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Tested negative to COVID last week after checking into emergency at local
hospital due to chills, severe headache, weakness, muscle and joint pain.
Diagnosis was pneumonia and injested or inhaled infection that got into the
blood stream. 5 days and $20,000 later I’m back on my feet and taking
antibiotic for 2 weeks.
The hospital COVID test was a 15 minute turnaround for preliminary result and
60 mins for verification.

Re: [MBZ] w123 2.88 diff anyone?

2020-07-04 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I just put the drivetrain (engine, transmission and rear end) from a 84 300D
into my 83 240D. The rear end I used was a 3.07. It is working out very well.
Plenty of pull in the lower gears and high end cruise at 70 to 80 is pretty
comfortable. Huge difference from the 3.69 rear end I had in the 240. Improved
my 0-60 mph from 23 seconds to 14.

Also, had the AC converted to cross flow condenser and Sanderson compressor.
It is working great and stays nice cool even when idling at the stoplights.
Temps in western Michigan have been in the low to mid 90’s this week. Thanks
again to Dan for connection to Klima Kits.

My hope is I will enjoy this car for many years.

Re: [MBZ] Here's a Car to Lust Over

2020-06-20 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I just bought a 1991 Honda Civic DX 1.5L 5 speed manual, 4 door. Wind up
windows however, I can reach all of them from the driver’s seat!Picture
attached. 216,000 miles. One small spot of surface rust on rear quarter.
Starts and runs like new Picked it up for $800.
AC needs to be sorted out, and I replaced the front passenger side cv axle. (It
took me 30 minutes) and I’ve never done it before. I love the simplicity,
remove two bolts, couple taps of a hammer to drop ball joint and back together.
Not sure if I want keep it or resell it. It’s fun to drive around town but not
real comfy for long distance.
Note: 1983 240D with new/used 1984 300D drivetrain is up and running. New
Sanden air compressor and cross flow condenser will be hooked up soon. Thanks
Dan for the help getting me hooked up with www.Klimakit.com.

[MBZ] Fwd: 6/2/2020 Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-06-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
The engine and transmission swap is complete! I am happy with the upgrade. I
replaced the 240D drive train with a used engine, transmission and rear end out
of an 84 300D. I have been driving it the last few days and I am happy with
added power and higher speed drivability.

I still have to figure out the cruise control connections.

Question -Does any one know where the sensor is located on the 84 300D and how
to hook into the 83 240D chassis. It appears there are two sensors on the 300D,
one near the back of the engine and another on the front behind the fan. Which
one do I use?

[MBZ] Update - Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-06-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes

Phase one is complete. I have removed the donor engine from the 84 300D with
a bad transmission. I am in the process of replacing the the front seal and
checking other components and replacing as needed.
Next phase is removing transmission from 2nd donor car. (83 300D). I’ve been
told by several that the 240D transmission won’t hold up to the additional
torque of the turbo engine.
I will need a new/used exhaust system. Does anyone have any information on a
used stainless system that is for sale. Rick was able to provide one for my
last project (85 300D) that is currently in Texas and being used as a daily
driver by my daughter.
Mike

I have a rust free 1983 240D with a worn out engine and a rusted out 84 300D
with a strong engine. Looking for a write up or link to any information on
moving the engine from 1984 300D turbo chassis to 1983 240D chassis
Both are automatics The 300D transmission is trash, will the 240D transmission
matchup to 300D without modifications or performance issues?
The 240 has manual HVAC that I want keep.

I’ve already moved the differential from the 300D to the 240D and like the
better highway performance however the 240 engine is pretty worn out and
showing its age.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

[MBZ] Hirschmann

2020-06-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Would any one have the black part that surrounds the brass post in the attached
picture. I believe it is damaged as I can get the antenna to run the aerial up
and down but it appears the part is missing some teeth and doesn’t work /
engage correctly.
I called Hirschmann and they will not sell me a used part or send me a diagram
or picture of the part to help me determine what piece is broken off. They did
offer to refurbish my antenna for $200.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: [MBZ] YAAAAAYYYYYYY MEEEEEE!!!!!! ITTTTT'SSSS ALLIIIIVVE!!!!!

2020-04-30 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
For What it’s worth.
I recently sold my 2005 Dodge Caravan and the buyer came back to me after
trying to buy plates for it. She said the licensing bureau claimed there was a
lien on the title.
I bought the vehicle new from the dealership and it has been paid off for over
10 years. We bought it new had financed around $5000 to qualify for discounts.
I could not locate the lien release from the loan company so I went back the
dealership and the woman I spoke with said the loan company was out of business
and referred me to a service that charges $30 to clear a title. She also
discreetly suggested I just sign a fictitious name and date on the stamped form
the state licensing bureau had placed on the title. So that’s what I did. That
was over 2 weeks ago. Hoping for the best.

Manual HVAC, roof and windows are electric. Best thing so far is the

[MBZ] Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-03-21 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes

Thanks
Mike

Well said. My son was just told to go home from his Michigan state college
until further notice. All classes will be online.
My take is they are trying to slow the process down so the hospitals are not

[MBZ] 82/85 300TD rear suspension

2019-09-11 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
82 300TD

Hi folks
I’m beginning work (again) on my 82 wagon and am planning on driving it to
Austin, TX from Michigan this winter to visit my daughter. My son-in-law
worked on the rear suspension several years ago and at that time it seemed to
be working well. Now the rear end of the car drops down after sitting a couple
of days. When I drive, it will slowly recover and work pretty well.
I know there have been prior discussions about what causes this but I have not
been able to find those emails. Is there a basic troubleshooting guide/tutorial
for the rear suspension on the web or could someone school me on what the fix
might be.

Thanks,
Mike

Agreed. Although I have been entertained and sometimes disappointed when
reading posts of all who participated in making light of the arrogance,
ignorance and lack of experience of some members of the W123 group as well some
the members of this group.
I try to remember that when pointing the finger at others there are three other
fingers pointing back at you. I am guilty of this as well.
