[MBZ] Steak Price

2022-05-06 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Meijer’s, our local big box store is selling their New York strip steak for
$13.69 lb.
Food prices are crazy high.
I bought 1/2 a cow about 6 months ago for $5.50 a pound packaged and
delivered.
I’ll bet it will be close to $8.50 a pound next time. My supplier said his
feed cost had doubled since the first of the year.
This economy sucks!

I’m still here. Still have 85 300D, 83 240D and 81/85 300TD.
Been busy with my wife, she slipped in June in the bathroom and compressed a
vertebrae. 9 days in hospital, home and then back in hospital with blood borne
bacteria that nearly killed her. Still not sure where it came from or how it
entered her system. Bacteria attacked all weak areas. 46 days in hospital, 10
days on a ventilator, brain surgery, lost site on the left side, damaged a
heart valve, and then the surgery in her back. Not a great summer however, she
is recovering and we feel lucky to still have her with us.

Re: [MBZ] Shop air

2021-10-25 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
https://blog.exair.com/2019/05/01/is-pvc-pipe-alright-to-use-with-compressed-air/

Good info on this site with contact info at the to discuss your project.

Is PVC Pipe Alright to Use with Compressed Air?
PUBLISHED ON May 1, 2019 by Brian Farno
A question arises every now and then on whether or not PVC pipe, yes the stuff
from your local hardware store that says it is rated for 200 psi, is safe to
use as compressed air supply line. The answer is always the same, NO! OSHA
agrees – see their statement here.

Schedule 40 PVC pipe is not designed nor rated for use with compressed air or
other gases. PVC pipe will explode under pressure, it is impacted
significantly by temperature and can be difficult to get airtight.

PVC pipe was originally designed and tested for conveyance of liquids or
products that cannot be compressed, rather they can be pressurized. The
largest concern is the failure method of the piping itself. When being used
with a liquid that cannot be compressed, if there is a failure (crack or hole)
then the piping will spring a leak and not shatter. When introducing a
compressed gas, such as compressed air, if there is a failure the method ends
up being shrapnel. This YouTube video does a good job of illustrating how the
pipe shatters.

While it may seem that it takes a good amount of pressure to cause a failure in
the pipe, that is often not the case. I have chatted with some local shop
owners who decided to run PVC as a quick and cheap alternative to get their
machines up and running.

They each experienced the same failures at different points in time as well.
The worst one was a section of PVC pipe installed over a workbench failed where
an operator would normally be standing. Luckily the failure happened at night
when no one was there. Even though no one got injured this still caused a
considerable expense to the company because the compressor ran overnight trying
to pressurize a ruptured line.

Temperature will impact the PVC as well. Schedule 40 PVC is generally rated for
use between 70°F and 140°F (21°-60°C). Pipes that are installed outside or in
non temperature controlled buildings can freeze the pipes and make them brittle.

If you haven’t worked with PVC before or do not let the sealant set, it can be
hard to get a good seal, leading to leaks and a weak spot in the system.

The point of this is the cheapest, quick, and easy solutions are more often ,
the ones that will cost the most in the long run.

If you would like to discuss proper compressed air piping and how to save
compressed air on your systems, please contact us.

Also, if it has two carbs it has been modified. The 77 originally cam with a
single Stromberg carburetor. If it is rust free and running correctly it
should bring 4
$4000 easily. What color is it?
Mine Is a 78, Carmine Red. I rebuilt the engine about 15 years ago. Bored out
cylinders .40 and upgraded the head with larger valves and added a mild cam.
Along with the dual carbs and removal of all unnecessary emissions stuff it’s
fun to drive. I’m 5’10” and I fit in it very nicely. That’s mine son Andy and

Re: [MBZ] Why would anybody want to live in CA?

2021-03-20 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
In most cities/towns there are already zoning laws in place that cover number
of vehicles, unlicensed vehicles, vehicles on blocks and/or abandoned vehicles.
The difficulty is assigning manpower to follow up and enforce the existing
laws. Instead of wasting time writing new laws they need to figure a way to
enforce the existing ones!

hospital due to chills, severe headache, weakness, muscle and joint pain.
Diagnosis was pneumonia and injested or inhaled infection that got into the

antibiotic for 2 weeks.
The hospital COVID test was a 15 minute turnaround for preliminary result and

Re: [MBZ] w123 2.88 diff anyone?

2020-07-04 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I just put the drivetrain (engine, transmission and rear end) from a 84 300D
into my 83 240D. The rear end I used was a 3.07. It is working out very well.
Plenty of pull in the lower gears and high end cruise at 70 to 80 is pretty
comfortable. Huge difference from the 3.69 rear end I had in the 240. Improved
my 0-60 mph from 23 seconds to 14.

Also, had the AC converted to cross flow condenser and Sanderson compressor.
It is working great and stays nice cool even when idling at the stoplights.
Temps in western Michigan have been in the low to mid 90’s this week. Thanks
again to Dan for connection to Klima Kits.

My hope is I will enjoy this car for many years.

I bought one for the 83 240d from Autozone for about $95. It’s been running
about a year with no issues.
I bought front one for 91 Honda Civic from NAPA last month for $64.

Where did get your last one?

Re: [MBZ] Here's a Car to Lust Over

2020-06-20 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I just bought a 1991 Honda Civic DX 1.5L 5 speed manual, 4 door. Wind up
windows however, I can reach all of them from the driver’s seat!Picture
attached. 216,000 miles. One small spot of surface rust on rear quarter.
Starts and runs like new Picked it up for $800.
AC needs to be sorted out, and I replaced the front passenger side cv axle. (It
took me 30 minutes) and I’ve never done it before. I love the simplicity,
remove two bolts, couple taps of a hammer to drop ball joint and back together.
Not sure if I want keep it or resell it. It’s fun to drive around town but not
real comfy for long distance.
Note: 1983 240D with new/used 1984 300D drivetrain is up and running. New
Sanden air compressor and cross flow condenser will be hooked up soon. Thanks
Dan for the help getting me hooked up with www.Klimakit.com.

[MBZ] Fwd: 6/2/2020 Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-06-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
The engine and transmission swap is complete! I am happy with the upgrade. I
replaced the 240D drive train with a used engine, transmission and rear end out
of an 84 300D. I have been driving it the last few days and I am happy with
added power and higher speed drivability.

I still have to figure out the cruise control connections.

Question -Does any one know where the sensor is located on the 84 300D and how
to hook into the 83 240D chassis. It appears there are two sensors on the 300D,
one near the back of the engine and another on the front behind the fan. Which
one do I use?

[MBZ] Update - Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-06-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes

Phase one is complete. I have removed the donor engine from the 84 300D with
a bad transmission. I am in the process of replacing the the front seal and
checking other components and replacing as needed.
Next phase is removing transmission from 2nd donor car. (83 300D). I’ve been
told by several that the 240D transmission won’t hold up to the additional
torque of the turbo engine.
I will need a new/used exhaust system. Does anyone have any information on a
used stainless system that is for sale. Rick was able to provide one for my
last project (85 300D) that is currently in Texas and being used as a daily
driver by my daughter.
Mike

I have a rust free 1983 240D with a worn out engine and a rusted out 84 300D
with a strong engine. Looking for a write up or link to any information on
moving the engine from 1984 300D turbo chassis to 1983 240D chassis
Both are automatics The 300D transmission is trash, will the 240D transmission
matchup to 300D without modifications or performance issues?
The 240 has manual HVAC that I want keep.

I’ve already moved the differential from the 300D to the 240D and like the
better highway performance however the 240 engine is pretty worn out and
showing its age.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

[MBZ] Hirschmann

2020-06-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Would any one have the black part that surrounds the brass post in the attached
picture. I believe it is damaged as I can get the antenna to run the aerial up
and down but it appears the part is missing some teeth and doesn’t work /
engage correctly.
I called Hirschmann and they will not sell me a used part or send me a diagram
or picture of the part to help me determine what piece is broken off. They did
offer to refurbish my antenna for $200.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [MBZ] YAAAAAYYYYYYY MEEEEEE!!!!!! ITTTTT'SSSS ALLIIIIVVE!!!!!

2020-04-30 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
For What it’s worth.
I recently sold my 2005 Dodge Caravan and the buyer came back to me after
trying to buy plates for it. She said the licensing bureau claimed there was a
lien on the title.
I bought the vehicle new from the dealership and it has been paid off for over
10 years. We bought it new had financed around $5000 to qualify for discounts.
I could not locate the lien release from the loan company so I went back the
dealership and the woman I spoke with said the loan company was out of business
and referred me to a service that charges $30 to clear a title. She also
discreetly suggested I just sign a fictitious name and date on the stamped form
the state licensing bureau had placed on the title. So that’s what I did. That
was over 2 weeks ago. Hoping for the best.

Re: [MBZ] 300D Engine transfer to 240D

2020-04-11 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Manual HVAC, roof and windows are electric. Best thing so far is the
differential change. From a 3.69 to 3.07. About a 10 to 12 mile per hour
difference at cruising speed.

[MBZ] 300D Engine transfer to 240D

2020-04-11 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes

[MBZ] Engine swap 1984 300D to 1983 240D

2020-03-21 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes

Thanks
Mike

My take is they are trying to slow the process down so the hospitals are not

[MBZ] The Good Kids: Was OT: Banned in Britain

2020-02-06 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes

a white male, was a scout from age 6 through 16. Although he wanted to quit
several times through the years he stuck it out ended up as an Eagle Scout. We
are very proud if him.
There are many success stories involving the “youngsters” of this generation
though we most often hear of losers and trouble makers that are a part of every
generation.
It is important to share the good stories as well

[MBZ] 82/85 300TD rear suspension

2019-09-11 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
82 300TD

Hi folks
I’m beginning work (again) on my 82 wagon and am planning on driving it to
Austin, TX from Michigan this winter to visit my daughter. My son-in-law
worked on the rear suspension several years ago and at that time it seemed to
be working well. Now the rear end of the car drops down after sitting a couple
of days. When I drive, it will slowly recover and work pretty well.
I know there have been prior discussions about what causes this but I have not
been able to find those emails. Is there a basic troubleshooting guide/tutorial
for the rear suspension on the web or could someone school me on what the fix
might be.

Thanks,
Mike

Agreed. Although I have been entertained and sometimes disappointed when
reading posts of all who participated in making light of the arrogance,
ignorance and lack of experience of some members of the W123 group as well some
the members of this group.
I try to remember that when pointing the finger at others there are three other
fingers pointing back at you. I am guilty of this as well.

[MBZ] 1983 300D - transmission

2019-05-02 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
After getting the engine running in the vehicle that had the fuel pump issue I
tried to back this car out of the garage and the transmission would not engage
in reverse or any forward gear. Putting the selector in park did prevent it
from being pushed out of the garage, so I think that eliminates the drive shaft
or rear end as being the fault. The fluid was pinkish red and did have a burnt
smell to it.
Are there any procedures or components I could try or test that might get it
working again? Just getting it working enough to move around the yard would be
helpful.
Thanks,
Mike

2019-04-28 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Yes. Both 300 D’s. The engine sounds fantastic with almost no blow by at the
oil cap. Basically rust free, interior is rough.
The 2nd one with the glow plug issue is not so good. There are very nasty metal
to metal banging sounds from the engine. This is definitely going to be a
parts car.
The interior is pretty good and may be moved to the one with the good engine.

Re: [MBZ] squeal on right turn

2019-04-27 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
My intermittent squeal ended up being the alternator. I changed belts thinking
that might be the issue. It wasn’t. The squeal goes away after about 15
seconds of driving. It is getting worse but goes away for a while if I spray
the pulley are with some lube.
Time for a rebuild I think.

[MBZ] New 1984 300D?

2019-04-27 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I’m picked another W123 last weekend. I’m up to 5 now! 2 of them not running.
Still working on the on fuel lift pump issue on the 1983 300D.

The most recent acquisition (84 300D) has an glow plug relay problem. I have
replaced faulty plugs, tested wires for continuity, and replaced the relay with
two different known good relays from operating vehicles. I cannot get the
relay to kick in. I’m getting 12 volt power to the relay and to both sides of
the fuse. The odd thing is, when I test the glow plug posts on the relay with
my analog tester it shows they each have voltage when grounding to the engine.
This voltage is present at all times. The weird part is that when I run a test
wire from the glow plug relay posts to engine ground I get no reaction! No
juice is flowing.
Could there be a problem with the wire(s) that connect to the ignition circuit?

Looking for answers.

I am a novice when trying to fix electrical issues.

[MBZ] 1984 300D fuel pressure

2019-04-21 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
New project, new problems.
I picked up a 1984 300D project/parts car on Friday and I am having trouble
getting it fired up. I pulled all the glow plugs only had to replace one of
them. The relay is working correctly. I then tried to bleed fuel lines. I
loosened the hard line fittings at the injection pump, held the throttle wide
open and cranked it over for several minutes and did not get any fuel to leak
out. I then changed both filters refilled the canister filter and tried again,
still no fuel out of the hard lines. Thinking I might have some plugged lines
or an air leak I eliminated the fuel tank and ran the supply and return line to
a small tub of fresh diesel. (Like diesel purge set up.) After cranking for a
bit with this setup I was getting some fuel coming out of return line but it
was barely coming out and when I plugged the return line with my finger I felt
no pressure build up. Even after cranking for over a minute. The old style
manual hand pump leaks like a sieve when I pump with that and is useless,
however, it does not appear to leak or suck air when I tighten it and crank the
engine. Not sure what to try next. Looking for some help.
1. Would a bad lift pump cause this problem.
2. Does anyone know how much pressure or volume I should see at the return
line?
3. Could the leaking hand pump this problem.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: [MBZ] Front ball joints

2019-04-17 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I bought and and installed Lemforder ball joints in my 1983 240D a couple of
weeks ago. I took the arms off the car, clamped them in my big vice and used
the generic press from local Advance Auto. I used 1/2 breaker bar and 3’ pipe.
It was strenuous but they both went in straight and true.

[MBZ] New Parts 83 240D

2019-03-14 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I installed the new engine mounts today. The old ones looked like they were in
good shape except they were giving almost no vertical support. The new mounts
were almost an inch higher than the old ones and compressed down about 1/2 as
much as the old ones when installed.
The new ones are supposed to be Lemforder. They were not in a box, have what
looks like an S and about 6 or 7 numbers scattered around on one side of the
rubber. It also looks like a someone wire brushed off a spot about the size of
a nickel on each one.

[MBZ] 1983 240D Lower Ball Joint

2019-03-09 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Any thoughts on a recommended brand for lower ball joints on my 240D? There is
a large amount of play and nasty noises coming from both of them. Has anyone
replaced them using the “loaner press” from the local auto parts store? I’m
going to try and do the repair myself. I’ve watched all videos on YouTube and
it looks like a pretty straight forward job. I have a torch, a big hammer and a
local garage that will help me if needed.

Everything else on front suspension feels tight and looks like it has been
replaced. It has 210,000 miles on it.
Thanks,

Re: [MBZ] OT - TV

2019-01-30 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
When I was about 10 years old (1967) my parents bought an old farmhouse on 5
acres for $3500.00
There was hole in the wall between the living room and dining room that had a
turntable installed so you could spin the tv around to watch it in either room.
A steering wheel was was mounted in the corner of dining room and connected to
a pulley system that allowed one to turn the television antenna from inside the
house.
Life was good.

Re: [MBZ] Monark nozzles

2019-01-17 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Thanks for all the input. Kent gave in and sold them to me without his kit.
The price ended up being better than the eBay prices with the New Years
discount.
He said they are pretty much out of stock again.

[MBZ] Battery tray W23

2018-12-18 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Anyone have a halfway decent battery tray for a W123 for sale?
Mercedesource might have one but he is not cheap.
The only rust on my newly acquired 83 240D is the battery tray and a good size
hole behind it. Floor board and seat supports are still solid but I am going
to have to cut the rear front seat support bolts to get the seat out and see
how bad it is.
I ordered some miracle paint yesterday. I’m attaching a couple of photos.

Speedo Gear Drive

Looking for a used speedo gear drive for my 240D.
Does anyone have one they would part with?

The link shows the schematic.
